FG moves to ban production of alcohol in sachets

The Federal Government has indicated plans to completely phase out high concentration of alcohol in sachet and small Polyethylene Terephthalate and glass bottles in the country.

The moves are contained in a statement by the Director-General of the National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye on Saturday titled: ‘NAFDAC cautions on alcohol abuse.’

She said, “NAFDAC under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Health, once again, wishes to bring to the attention of the general public, concerns relating to the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in sachets, small volume glass and PET bottles.

“These concerns relate to negative effects of irresponsible alcohol consumption on public health and on the safety and security of the public, alcohol being a toxic and psychoactive substance with dependence producing properties.

“Uncontrolled access and availability of high concentration alcohol in sachet and small volume PET or glass bottles has been put forward as a factor contributing to substance and alcohol abuse in Nigeria with its negative impact on the society.

“The World Health Organisation reports that alcohol consumption contributes to three million deaths each year globally as well as to the disabilities and poor health of millions of people.

“NAFDAC with full support of the Federal Ministry of Health has continued to exercise its regulatory responsibilities by ensuring that all alcoholic beverages and other regulated products approved by the agency meet set standards of quality, safety and wholesomeness.

“The Federal Ministry of Health is concerned about the high incidence of substance and alcohol abuse in the country and NAFDAC, being the competent authority and working with relevant stakeholders, is increasing efforts to stem this.

“With regard to alcohol, major stakeholders have been engaged at the highest level and are already sensitised to the issue. To this end, several interventions jointly agreed upon by major stakeholders are being undertaken and as a first step, no new products in sachet and small volume PET or glass bottles above 30 per cent ABV will be registered by NAFDAC.

“Furthermore, to reduce availability and curb abuse, effective January 31 2020, producers of alcohol in sachets and small volume PET and glass bottles are to reduce production by 50 per cent of capacity prior to January 2020. The overall goal is a complete phase out of high concentration alcohol in sachets and small PET and glass bottles in line with the agreed roadmap or earlier.”    ,,

BBNaija 2020: Reno Omokri attacks Nigerian youths over Sunday night’s eviction show

Reno Omokri, former presidential aide, on Sunday berated Nigerian youths over the attention they pay to the eviction of housemates of the Big Brother Naija show.

Omokri said poverty would reduce in Nigeria if youths invested more in rice venture than paying attention to the eviction of BBNaija housemates.

The former presidential aide stated this in a tweet on Sunday.

“The price of rice has increased by 60% since July when #BBNaija started. Many youths have made millions buying rice from Kebbi and Jigawa and selling it in Lagos and Port Harcourt. But, all you can boast of at that time is being up to date on BBN!

“You are so focused on who gets evicted from the #BBNaija house. If only you were as focused on getting poverty evicted from your life.

“For 2 months, you suspended your life to focus on BBN. Others used that time to suspend poverty from their life,” he tweeted.

His comment is coming at a time Prince and Kiddwaya were evicted from the reality television show after polling the lowest scores.

Dominic Thiem beats Zverev for US Open title, after four hours

Austrian Dominic Thiem came back from two sets down to defeat Alexander Zverev, 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6. and win his first US Open title, his first Grand Slam.

The winner was decided in a tie breaker after four hours on court.

Thiem also made history as the first Austrian to win the title.

He is also the second Austrian to win a Grand Slam title after Thomas Muster’s 1995 French Open title.

The 27-year-old world number three, beaten in his first three Grand Slam finals, started as favourite but appeared to have blown his golden chance as he fell two sets behind.

Thiem, who had dropped only one set en route to the final, looked stifled by nerves early on but gradually broke the shackles to hit back from a break down to take the third.

Zverev faltered on serve at 3-4 in a high-quality fourth set allowing Thiem to take the contest to a decider.

A limping Thiem trailed 5-3 in a high-quality decider but summoned some incredible baseline winners to take it into a nerve-jangling tiebreak.

An astonishing climax saw Thiem squander two match points from 6-4 but when a third opportunity came Zverev fired wide after four hours and two minutes.

“I wish there were two winners today, we both deserved it,” Thiem, said on court after a tearful speech from his crestfallen 23-year-old opponent.

Thiem had lost the last two French Open finals to Rafa Nadal and this year’s Australian Open final to Novak Djokovic.

This time he started as the favourite but needed to become the first player to win a Grand Slam title from two sets down since Gaston Gaudio at the 2004 French Open to end his wait.

Thiem is the first male player born in the 1990s to claim a Grand Slam and the first besides the big three of Nadal, Djokovic and Roger Federer to claim one of the majors since Stan Wawrinka won the 2016 U.S. Open.

One killed, four injured in Delta building collapse

Apprehension, Saturday enveloped Asaba, the Delta State capital, following the collapse of a storey building which left a middle-aged man dead and four others with severe injuries, including the owner of the building.

The building, which is located at Holy Mary Road behind the Nigeria Police Officers Mess, Bonsac in the Asaba metropolis, was being converted from a car park to one-storey when it collapsed.

Vanguard gathered that construction work began at the site about two weeks ago and was already being roofed when it collapsed, adding that the work was being supervised by the owner, 76 years retired Group Captain Sam Akaraiwe.

The structure was being built in a compacted space in the compound with two structures, an uncompleted decking and a bungalow where the owner resides.

The Vanguard gathered neighbours made frantic efforts to rescue those trapped in the rubbles with their bare hands and shovels before the arrival of two excavators.

The owner of the building who sustained severe head injuries was traced with the ring tone of his cellphone under a pile of rubbles and was rescued along with three other workers.

The fifth person whose identity was unknown as at press time died on the spot and had been deposited in a mortuary while the other four persons who are in critical condition are taking treatment at the hospital.

A survivor and carpenter working on the roof, Mr Ike Ifenacho said he was on top of the building doing woodwork when he noticed that the building was caving in, adding that he had to jump off but sustained minor injuries on his jaw and leg.

Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Council, Mr Uche Osadebe who was at the scene, said he made calls to relevant authorities and mobilised after he was called by the Councillor representing the area.

Blaming the collapsed structure on substandard materials and self-supervision by the owner, he said the building does not have approval from relevant government ministries and agencies.

An official of Red Cross and Leader Disaster Management Team, Oshimili South, Mr Sunday Moses and Delta State Emergency Management Agency SEMA, Mr Daniel Okpor, said four persons were rescued alive with injuries while one was brought out dead from the rubbles with the help of the excavator.

A neighbour who witnessed the incident, Mr Friday James said he heard a big bang which made him ran out of his house only to discover that a building had collapsed and quickly mobilised others with a shovel and started digging to rescue those trapped.

He confirmed that four persons, including the owner of the building, were rescued from under the rubble while one was brought out dead.

Lagos community cries for help, begs state govt as flood threaten lives, properties

The residents of Old-Ewu and Ogunyinka Mafoluku communities in Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos State have cried to the state government to save them from the flood in the community.

Both vehicular and pedestrian movements have become difficult in the community when it rains, as residents have to battle to cross the heavy flood.

The most affected streets include Ilare Close, Muse Oyinbo Close and Tijani kashimawo Close off 7/8 bus-stop, facing the First bank along Airport Road.

Other affected places are Dominican school, Saint Jude Catholic Church and Domino shop in Mafoluku Oshodi.

The cause of the flood was traced to the bad drainage system in the community and lack of gutters in some streets, hindering the free flow of water.

Affected residents have taken to wearing rain boots when going in and out of their houses to protect themselves.

Speaking for the residents, the Community Development Association (CDA) chairperson, Mrs. Durotola Akinyemi said they need the help of the government to fix the gutters in the community.

She lamented: “Flood has taken over our community. We move around in rain boots despite the fact that we cleared the drainage last year yet, we are still experiencing flood. We need the intervention of the government to fix our drainages to save us from the flood.

“Just one rainfall, everywhere in the community has turned to a pool and we cannot move in and out of our houses, what will be our fate when the rain continues intensely as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Services (NIMET).”

Apostle Suleman reacts as Freeze apologizes to Oyedepo

The Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has reacted to the apology offered to the founder of Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo by Daddy Freeze, over an old clip.

Freeze took to his social media pages, to upload a video of him saying he was sorry of insulting the cleric and promised to cut out the confrontational way of addressing faith-based issues.

Suleman, in a tweet via his verified handle, warned Freeze that he can criticize but not insult.

According to the cleric, Freeze had insulted him too in the past, but he has forgiven him as instructed by the Bible.

“Just watched the video of Ifedayo Olarinde (Daddy Freeze) apologizing to Papa Oyedepo over the video he did 2 years ago.

“He equally did videos against me. I forgave because the Bible enjoins us to forgive. That’s what is expected of us. You can criticize but don’t insult,” Suleman wrote.

The resurfaced video had caused so much controversy that has led to Pastor Paul Enenche of Dunamis International Gospel Centre and David Ibiyeomie of Salvation Ministries tongue lashing Daddy Freeze.

Kaduna shuts down Bet9ja, Access Bet, King bet, others

The Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) has shut down 13 gaming offices in the state.

Mr Liye Anthony, Head of Gaming in the agency, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Sunday.

Anthony said that the operation, which began on Thursday, had so far shut down five offices of bet9ja and King Bet respectively, two Access Bet offices and one office of Derby Lotto.

He said that there were about 1,500 gaming offices across the state operating illegally without due registration and license.

According to him, the exercise will continue until all the illegal gaming offices are shut down.

“We will continue to go after them until all the operators of the gaming companies regularized their operations and obtain the needed license to operate in the state,” he said.

The Executive Chairman of the agency, Dr Zaid Abubakar, had told newsmen that apart from operating illegally, the gaming companies were mopping about N2.0 billion monthly from the state and were not paying a kobo to the state government as tax.

He also said that the operators of the gaming companies were equally required by law to integrate their operations into the KADIRS Service Software, stressing that the companies failed to do so.
