3 arrested over theft of cars in Adamawa

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested three suspects over the theft of two cars around the State capital, Yola.

The police command said in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, DSP Sulaiman Nguroje, that the command, through its men attached to Karewa Division in Yola arrested a 30-year-old Mustapha Ismail, a resident of Zango ward in Yola North local government area over a particular car.

It said the arrest was effected on September 16, 2020 over alleged theft of a Toyota starlet with Reg. No. MDG 505 AA parked inside Jimeta Ultra modern market.

The Jimeta Ultramodern market, Yola’s most prestigious shopping centre, was once notorious for car thefts before certain measures were put in place.

The statement added that on Saturday, September 19, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARs) responded to a distress call from a resident of Demsawo (a community in Jimeta, Yola North) whose vehicle with Reg. No. SB 509 DBT was stolen in his house.

It said the car was recovered along Ngurore road, in Yola South LGA.

Nguroje said a 20-year-old Zaradden Adamu, a resident of Demsawo and 25-year-old Salihu Mohammed, a resident of Ngurore in Yola South, were arrested for being in possession of the car.

It appears that car stealing is beginning to rise in Adamawa State. The Adamawa Police Command had only last week paraded three suspected car thieves among 33 other suspects.

20-year old polytechnic student killed for rituals in Ikorodu

It’s sunset at dawn for 20-year-old Toluwalase Kembi, a polytechnic student awaiting industrial training.

A visit to her friend in the Ikorodu area sadly led to her death allegedly by boyfriend who claimed he was paid N2m to carry out the act.

The 33-year-old suspect, Owolabi Yusuf, also known as alfa, is now cooling his heels in the custody of the Elere Police Division in the Agege area, where the matter was reported to.

Punch gathered that the victim, who lived with her parents on Orile Road, TabonTabon, Agege, had gone to sleep over in Yusuf’s place in the Ladeja area of Ikorodu, on July 28, when she was allegedly clubbed to death and her body reportedly cut into pieces for ritual purposes.

The family told Punch that the police had yet to recover the corpse.

The police at Elere division were able to arrest Yusuf in the third week of August 2020 upon fleeing to Ilorin, Kwara State, after allegedly carrying out the act.

The suspect reportedly confessed to the police that he allegedly connived with three other fleeing persons, including a herbalist named Owonikoko, to kill the 20-year-old student with a pestle during her visit.

The family said Kembi, who just completed National Diploma, should have proceeded for IT but for the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When she did not return home, we thought she went missing; we didn’t know she had been murdered and her body cut into pieces,” the father, Oluwatoyin Kembi, a government retiree, lamented during an interview.

Meanwhile, Toluwalase’s elder sister, Abimbola, urged the police to ensure that justice was served in the matter.

She noted that the family had yet to see Toluwalase’s corpse while the fleeing suspects including the herbalist named Owonikoko, had yet to be apprehended.

Abimbola said, “On July 28, I, she and my mummy were at home discussing. Minutes later, her phone rang and she picked the call outside. The next thing, she came back, took her bag and said she was going to see her friend in Ikorodu. In the evening, her fiancé named Segun called us and said Tolu called him that she was going to cook for someone in Ikorodu area, and that she said she was going to sleep over in Ikorodu.

“The following morning, he called us again that he called her and she didn’t pick. We also tried her mobile but nobody picked it up. Since then, we had been in this trouble. By the afternoon of that day, her phone was already switched off.

“All those times, she had already been killed by the friend she went to visit. We didn’t know. The police at the Elere division tracked her phone to Ikorodu and arrested the man in possession of the phone. The man then named Yusuf, also known as Alfa,  as the seller. That was how the truth came out.”

Another relative, Michael Akintunde, claimed that the suspect told the police that he “cut Toluwalase’s body into three parts.”

The deceased’s father who hails from Abeokuta, Ogun State, said since three weeks that the police had assured of recovering her corpse, the family had yet to hear any update.

“Yusuf told the police that it is the herbalist who knows where the body is. But it is over three weeks now and we are afraid that the matter could die down. The case is still at the division. We were expecting that it would have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, for more investigation,” the father added.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident, adding that efforts were being intensified to arrest three other fleeing suspects.

Wike warns INEC against declaring Edo poll inconclusive

The National Chairman of the Edo State Campaign Council of the Peoples Democratic Party and Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission against declaring the governorship election inconclusive.

He said INEC must keep to its promise of a transparent process.

Wike, who noted that the collation of results was the most critical stage, urged security personnel to prevent breaches, adding that the people of the state should defend their votes up to the collation centres.

The PDP campaign council chairman gave this warning during an interview in the Edo 2020 Situation Room streamed on Governor Godwin Obaseki’s Youtube Channel.

Wike said, “We have results from about 2,000 polling units from the various wards and from the intelligence we have gathered, I do believe that INEC will keep to that promise of being transparent.

But we are getting a bit worried that INEC said they have 700 unit results which is not correct and that calls for concern. We don’t believe that INEC has only 700. It is more than 2,000 that we have.

“Again, as we speak, they ought to have moved to the ward collation centres before they move to the local government collation centres. But we cannot find the security personnel around the ward collation centres and that gives us concern.

“Why is it that the security personnel are not at the ward collation centres? So, I urge the Inspector-General of Police to move his men to the ward collation centres.

“They must not allow miscreants to disrupt the electoral process. I believe that the commission will continue with what they have done.

“Like we have said, we don’t want this election to be inconclusive. This is the critical stage where you may see disruptions and then it will be declared inconclusive. INEC should fulfil its promise that this election will be transparent. We don’t want to hear inconclusive.”

Also, in the Situation Room, the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, and the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, added that it was surprising that the PDP got polling unit results faster than the electoral commission.

They insisted that the people’s votes must count.

Edo election: PDP's Obaseki in early lead

Governor Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party has recorded more votes from the results of the 13 Local Governments declared so far by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Although 17 political parties have fielded candidates for the election, it is a two-way race between All Progressives Congress and PDP.

Incumbent Governor Obaseki of PDP ran against APC standard-bearer Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Obaseki was elected on APC’s platform in 2016 but defected to the PDP after being denied the ticket owing to intra-party squabbles.

The PDP scored 240,935 while APC had 154, 192 votes from the declared results in the 13 LGAs.

Student found murdered with machete cuts in his room

There was pandemonium in Iree, Osun State penultimate Saturday over the discovery of the mutilated body of a missing student of Osun State Polytechnic, Festus Adedoyin Ewejobi, in his room.

He was said to have been killed by unknown men at his residence on Popoola Street near Eyinade area of the town.

It was said that Ewejobi had disappeared four days earlier without a trace leaving his neighbours and friends worried. The development, sources said, prompted his neighbours to raise the alarm, leading to the constitution of a search party for his whereabouts.

According to sources, it was while the search for Ewejobi was in progress that neighbours perceived a stench from his room, fuelling suspicion that he might have been harmed.

His apartment was immediately forced open only to find his decomposed body riddled with machete cuts.

The matter was reported to a nearby police station while his body was evacuated to a public morgue.

A source said: “We initially thought that the deceased was out of town when he was not seen or sighted in the neighbourhood for about four days.

“But we became worried because he would always leave a clue as to his whereabouts whenever he was going out. Hence, we raised the alarm when his whereabouts were unknown.

“Our worries about his safety heightened when we perceived a stench coming from his room. We forced our way into his room only to find his mutilated body.

“We reported the matter to the police divisional headquarters in the community and men of the station invited local government officials to evacuate the body. Family members of the deceased have also been contacted.

“From the look of things, his assailants probably trailed him to his room and killed him with a machete.’’

Ewejobi was described as an unassuming and happy-go-lucky youth who related well with his neighbours.

Another resident who spoke in confidence urged police to carry out a thorough investigation into his death, which she described as painful to residents.

She said: “Although some of his schoolmates and friends are of the opinion that his body might have been lacerated while he was struggling with sudden ill-health in bed, we believe there is more to his death than meets the eyes.

“It is a sad story. His death should be diligently investigated by the police with a view to bringing the perpetrators to justice.’’

US police intercepts poisonous letter mailed to Donald Trump

US officials have intercepted an envelope addressed to Donald Trump that contained the deadly poison ricin.

The letter was intercepted at a government facility that screens mail addressed to the White House and the president.

A preliminary investigation indicated it tested positive for ricin, a poison found naturally in castor beans which can be extremely lethal if inhaled or injected.

Federal investigators are working to determine where the enveloped originated from and who posted it. It is believed that the letter was sent from Canada, a law enforcement official told the New York Times.

The FBI, the Secret Service and the US Postal Inspection Service are leading the investigation.

In a statement, the FBI confirmed agents were looking into ‘a suspicious letter received at a US government mail facility’ and that there is ‘no known threat to public safety’.

Deadly ricin has previously been used to target American politicians through the mail

A Navy veteran was arrested in 2018 and confessed to sending envelopes to Mr Trump and members of his administration that contained the substance from which ricin is derived.

Authorities said the man, William Clyde Allen III, sent the envelopes with ground castor beans to the president, FBI director Christopher Wray, along with then-defence secretary Jim Mattis, then-CIA director Gina Haspel, Admiral John Richardson, who at the time was the Navy’s top officer,m.

The letters were intercepted and no one was hurt.

In 2014, a Mississippi man was sentenced to 25 years in prison after sending letters dusted with ricin to President Barack Obama and other officials.

68 year-old woman had 'magical' s.e.x with African toyboy before he left - and cost her £18,000

After a working life as a probation officer and social worker, Beth Haining reckoned she was a good judge of character – and certainly not the sort to suffer fools gladly.

So when she read stories of lonely older women falling for toyboys in faraway climes online – blowing their life savings on them and even marrying them – she’d laugh and shake her head in disbelief that they could be so gullible.

But Beth’s not laughing any more.

Because at 68 the mum-of-two is counting the £18,000 cost of doing just that – and now she wants to warn other women her age not to go down the same nightmare road.

I never thought this could happen to me, said Beth, now picking up the pieces of a fateful online encounter with a man in Ghana nearly 30 years younger.

“I was a stupid old woman who fell for the Mills and Boons chat, but he just wanted me for my money. I’ve cried for a year and put on four stone.”

Against all her better judgment she began falling for him on social media – and ended up sending him thousands of pounds when he asked for it.

She even flew out to Africa to meet him and fell straight into bed with him after he picked her up at the airport.

And when he began to bombard her with proposals on that first trip – and arranged a “surprise wedding” for them, Beth astonishingly went through with it – leaving her children stunned.

Then she brought him home – and all her illusions were shattered.

“I should have known better,” she says. “I used to laugh at women falling for good-looking toy boys from abroad and think how gullible and silly they are. Now I’m one of them.”

She was a 63-year-old divorcee when she met musician Rodney online in 2014.

He lived in Accra, Ghana – and Beth ran a charity that helped orphanages there.

“We had a mutual friend and both loved music. Rodney was a producer, working with some big names in Ghanaian music,” Beth said.

“I was a bit lonely as my sister Gaynor had died a couple of years earlier and my mum had been diagnosed with dementia. But Rodney was very friendly and chatty. We got on well.”

Soon the pair were messaging and then talking to each other every day.

Beth said: “I thought we were friends, but he started saying I had nice hair and he couldn’t wait to touch it.

“We’d seen pictures of each other and there was a huge age difference – he told me he was 40 – so I didn’t realise he was flirting at first.”

Before long, the first request for money came – and Beth, who had taken a shine to him, felt obliged to agree.

“I liked him and after a few months he asked if he could borrow some money as he was waiting for a cheque,” she said.

“It was just £200 so I did, and he promised to pay me back. Then he needed some money for some studio equipment and I sent him another £2,000.

“We began talking about meeting up. I’d been to Ghana before as I’d worked as a volunteer at orphanages over there. He asked me to visit him.”

Beth flew out in August 2015. “He picked me up and gave me a full-on kiss in the car which gave me butterflies,” she said.

“I realised then we weren’t just going to be friends and that night we had s.e.x.

"It was a magical time. We spent all our time together, eating out, drinking, meeting his friends.

“He always had his arm around me and was kissing me.”

Rodney asked Beth to marry him four or five times but she refused, saying they didn’t know each other well enough.

Then, a week before she was due to fly home they went to a club – and he stood on the stage and proposed.

“He said he wanted to spend his life with me and had arranged a surprise wedding for five days later, the day before I was to fly home. All his friends were clapping and cheering. I didn’t feel I could say no. I loved him but I thought it was too soon.”

The next day she bought a green wedding dress, the rings and asked a neighbour to send over her divorce papers from her first marriage which ended in the 1970s.

She said her horrified children begged her not to go through with it after she broke the news to them on the phone.

“I knew they’d try to talk me out of it,” said Beth. “They weren’t happy.”

It was during the ceremony she first realised Rodney had lied. “When I saw his date of birth I realised he’d lied about being 40 and really he was in his 30s. I was a bit shocked but it was too late.” Beth flew home the next day and paid a lawyer £3,000 to arrange the spouse visa Rodney needed.

It was granted in February 2017 – and he flew over to live in the three-bedroom home in Redditch, Worcs, left to her by her mum. Then things began to go wrong. “He didn’t stop moaning and nothing I did was good enough,” said Beth.

“He spent more time sleeping on the sofa than he did in my bed.

He would argue about everything – the food, the cold and having to find work in a packing factory.

"He said, ‘How can you be broke when you’re British?’ He thought this was the land of milk and honey.

“My children and friends didn’t like him. I thought it was a culture shock and he’d adapt. Eventually I realised it was all a lie.”

When she finally told him it was over he kept begging for another chance, buying her flowers, before finally agreeing to leave.

She gave him the money to fly home and the taxi fare to the airport.

Beth claims he reported her to police for attacking him.

“He’s over six foot. I’m half his size, twice his age and have never hit anyone,” said Beth who gave a statement with no action ever taken.

She is now waiting for her divorce to be finalised. The application cost her £1,400.

“Now I just want to get on with my life without him,” she said.

“I keep asking myself how could I have been so stupid as to be taken in by him. I thought it could never happen to me, but I fell for it all.”

Daughter stunned by mum's bombshell call

Beth’s daughter says she had reservations about her mum’s toyboy husband – and didn’t like him from the start.

Mum-of-three Sasha Haining, 47, said: “I was shocked when my mum rang me two days before her wedding to say she was getting married.

“I told her, ‘You can’t. He’s a lot younger than you and no one knows anything about him’.

"But she said he was nice. Obviously, he was going to be nice because that’s what you do when you’re trying to woo people.

“I didn’t like him from the moment I met him.

“I thought he was arrogant and rude. The first time we met him he went off and didn’t speak to anyone.

“We thought he was after her money straight away.

“My nan Barbara was really worried about it all. Mum had been giving him money and was always funding his business enterprises.

“I’m relieved that she isn’t with him now and is happy now.

“She is 100 per cent better off without him.”

#EdoDecides2020: Soldiers replace policemen at checkpoints

To reduce the likelihood of security breaches during the Governorship election in Edo State, armed military men have been deployed to man the roads in the State.

Checkpoints that were formerly operated by policemen were dismantled and turned to military checkpoints. The heavily armed soldiers were however friendly to the few road users.

It would be recalled that the Nigeria Police had placed restrictions on human and vehicular movements during the election.

The State Commissioner of Police Mr. Johnson Kokumo had in a statement announced restriction of movement as from 12 midnight Friday to 6pm on Saturday.

The election has thus far progressed peacefully and in near perfect observance of Covid-19 safety protocols.

There have been active presence of policemen and other security personnel in all the polling units of the state.

Voting commenced at 8.30 am and will when the last person on the queue has cast his ballot.
