Cult leader who claims to be Jesus arrested by Russian security forces

A former traffic police officer who claims to be the reincarnation of Jesus has been arrested in a special operation staged by Russian security agents.

Sergei Torop, who is known to his followers as Vissarion, was arrested along with two other leaders of the group, Vadim Redkin and Vladimir Vedernikov.

Russia’s investigative committee said it would charge him with organising an illegal religious organisation, alleging that the cult extorted money from followers and subjected them to emotional abuse.

A spokeswoman for Russia’s Investigations Committee said that the group is suspected of “establishing a religious association whose activities involve violence against individuals and of inflicting grievous bodily harm to two or more people.

“They used the money of [their followers] and also used psychological violence against them,” she is quoted as saying by state media.

The 59-year-old cult leader, who lost his job as a traffic officer in 1989, claimed he experienced an “awakening” as the Soviet regime began to collapse. In 1991 he founded a movement now known as the Church of the Last Testament and has written a ten-volume ‘sequel to the Bible’.

In 2002, told the Guardian UK: “I am not God. And it is a mistake to see Jesus as God. But I am the living word of God the father. Everything that God wants to say, he says through me”.

Several thousand followers live in a series of remote hamlets in the Krasnoyarsk region in Siberia. Converts to the cult have included professionals from across Russia as well as pilgrims from abroad.

In an interview with the BBC three years ago, Torop said: “We have a school of noble maidens here. We’re preparing girls to become future wives, future brides for worthy men.

“She has to understand not to rise above the man, not to be proud of her independence but to be shy, inconspicuous and weak.”

Torop is reported to have two wives with six children. Veganism is enforced and monetary exchange is banned inside the commune. Followers wear austere clothing and count years starting from 1961, the year of Vissarion’s birth, while Christmas has been replaced by a feast day on 14 January, his birthday.

Four policemen detained for killing musician in Rivers

Four police officers from the anti-kidnapping unit of the Rivers State Police Command and one sergeant attached to a supermarket have been detained for shooting a 20-year-old Chibuike Daniel Dominic, aka Sleek, in Elelewo axis of Obi-Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

Sleek, a musician, was allegedly shot dead by police operatives on Saturday, sparking a wave of protests two days after by angry youths, who demanded justice for the slain musician.

Sources narrated that the deceased and his friend, simply identified as Reuben, were waiting outside a hotel for a car to convey them to a destination when policemen confronted them.

The source said: “They were unarmed, there was nothing incriminating about them, but out of sheer fear of being arrested, the duo took to their heels. Following a chase that ensued, a riot policeman at De Topic Supermarket shot the musician.”

Another source told The Guardian that the armed officers, who were on a patrol, sighted the victim and two of his friends walking down the street, beckoned on them to come, but the boys, having seen that the men were with guns, ran away.

“While fleeing, the officers shouted ‘thief oh, thief oh’ and on hearing that, a police sergeant attached to a supermarket within the area, came out, chased and shot Dominic. He died before he could be taken to the hospital.”

Governor Nyesom Wike has condemned the killing and called for the reformation or outright dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Reacting to the sad development, Wike, on his official twitter handle, @NyesomWike, yesterday said the brutal killing by SARS operatives in Port Harcourt is unacceptable.

“We have and will continue to clamour for reformation or outright dissolution of SARS because they have become a menace to the society,” the governor stated.

Spokesman for the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the killing, said the officers had been moved to the state CID for further investigation. He said: “On September 19, about 2:30p.m., the leader of the Anti-Kidnapping unit on patrol along Elelenwo took one Daniel Ikeaguchi with Sgt Isaiah Ben, attached to 35 PMF Jigawa but on guard duty at an estate in Elelenwo, who allegedly shot the deceased, took the boy to the Elelenwo police station.

“On the receipt of the report, the DPO, CSP Chima Nnaji, immediately ordered that the boy, who was bleeding, be taken to the hospital, but he eventually died and was deposited at the UPTH mortuary.

“The DPO, after his preliminary investigation, transferred the sergeant and the four policemen from Anti-Kidnapping to the state CID for further investigation,” he said.

But a sister to the diseased, Mercy Dominic, expressed shock that since the death of Chibuike, the police had not contacted them. She lamented that they were denied access and locked out from the Elelenwo Police Station when they went to inquire about the death of their brother.

She said: “We were blocked and denied access to the police station. We went there to make inquiries after hearing of my brother’s death, but they refused us entrance. While roaming in front of the gate, I saw an officer in a police van where the other two of my late brother’s friends were kept and I asked, where is my brother. The officer heartlessly told me to go to University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital mortuary, saying that was where they dumped his body.”She described the incident as heartbreaking, adding his aged father had seriously been affected following the sad news.

“The way they were parading with his body bleeding all over, instead of taking him to the hospital is inhuman. I want them to face the law. We want justice.” She, therefore, called for thorough investigation into the incident and prosecution of any officer found culpable.

2-year-old boy 'torn apart' by two guard dogs while parents celebrated his birthday

A toddler is in a critical condition after being torn apart by two dogs who left him bleeding to death.

Two-year-old Yegor may need to have his leg amputated as doctors fight to keep him alive following the vicious attack at his home in Selydove, Ukraine.

The little boy was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood outside his house after being mutilated by two guard dogs.

The tot had wandered outside unnoticed as his parents and some guests gathered at his home to celebrate his second birthday.

Yegor was wandering around the courtyard when the dogs broke out of their enclosure and attacked him.

Reports say the boy's father failed to close the German Shepherds enclosure properly, which allowed the dogs to break free.

After realising Yegor was missing they went outside to search for him and found the dogs still attacking him.

Charity volunteer Aleksandra Timoshchenkova, who helped the family to collect money for Yegor's treatment said: ''The boy was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood.

''The dogs were still tearing him apart.''

Yegor was transported by a military helicopter to the city of Dnipro to receive emergency care.

He was admitted to Dnipro Regional Children's Hospital, where four teams of surgeons have started battling to save his life.

.It took medics five hours to restore his damaged blood vessels, bladder and intestines, and remove tissue "that had been chewed by the dogs".

Doctors are trying to save the boy's left leg from amputation.

Natalia Dementyeva, the head of the hospital said: ''The boy suffered extremely severe injuries known as dirty wounds.

''He is receiving powerful antibacterial therapy but we are expecting the development of inflammatory processes that are usual complications in such case

Police have launched a criminal case for failure to fulfil parental duties resulted in severe consequences against Yegor's mum and dad.

Police spokeswoman Aleksandra Gavrilko said: ''The boy's parents are being interrogated. Forensic examinations are underway.''

The parents face up to three years in prison if found guilty.

The investigation continues.

Pensioners protest in Ogun, reject Govt proposed N500 million quarterly defray

Retirees in Ogun State under the aegis of Nigeria Union of pensioners (NUP), on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest to register their grievances against what they described as government insensitivity to their plights.

The protesting pensioners were armed with placards with various inscriptions: “We say a big no to the killers of pension reform”, “Gratuities are not meant for burial expenses,” “33.4% pension increment is statutory, implement it now”, ” N5,000 minimum pension is humiliating, increase our pension”, “Pay our gratuity to provide succour for our jobless children”, “Reserve the obnoxious pension bill now”, N2billion annual releases takes 34 years to offer N68billion debt, so a 60 years pensioner will take gratuity at 94 years. Abomination”

Addressing newsmen, the Chairman of the NUP, Comrade Waheed Olayiwola Oloyede said the union rejected the proposal of Governor Dapo Abiodun to release N500million quarterly to offset outstanding gratuities. suggesting release of N1billion monthly as against the N500million.

Oloyede insisted that with the N500million, it would take the State 34 years to clear the outstanding N68billion arrears.

The State government had on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to earmark N500million for the clearance of gratuities of pensioners in the State.

Oloyede said, “We demand for immediate payment of gratuities for State retirees from 2014 to date and Local Government retirees from September 2011 to date.

“Although the government has agreed to make a quarterly release of N500,000,000, monthly from January, 2021. This proposal is not acceptable to us as it would take 34 years to offset the outstanding N68billion arrears, rather we would suggest N1billion monthly release by the government.”

The pensioners also demanded the immediate implementation of the 33.4 percent increase in pension, lamenting some of them still earn paltry sum of N5,000 as pension.

“We demand for immediate implementation of the provisions of the circular on 33.4% increase in pension that was issued in 2010. We also demand for Conventional Review/Increase in pension in consonance with the provision of section 210 (3) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

“It is unfortunate that salaries and wages had been reviewed severally without pension review.

“It is very disheartening that majority of pensioners are on N5,000 monthly pension in Ogun State, an amount which is not enough to feed the dogs of an elite in one day. This is the reason we have been calling for pension review /increase in the state.

“Having served our dear State diligently and meritoriously to the best of our abilities for 35 years or thereabout, we do not deserve this worst humiliation from the unconcerned politicians who spent only few years, take full pay and disengage with mouthwatering severance allowances.

“We call on Governor Dapo Abiodun to do the needful now and don’t allow himself to be used by psychopants to bring his government to disrepute. It is also pertinent to call on Mr Governor not to indulge in communication gap between the unions and the government.”

Crashed chopper pilot had no valid licence, says AIB

The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) Nigeria, yesterday, released the preliminary report on the recent helicopter crash in Opebi, Lagos, disclosing that the aircraft had no fuel at the time of the incident. It added that the late pilot had no valid licence.

Besides, the investigators said there was no evidence that the pilot applied for exemption in obedience to Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority’s (NCAA) provisions.

Reacting, the operator, Quorum Aviation Limited, faulted the claim, showing evidence sanctioning the pilot to fly.

The Bell 206B five-seater aircraft, marked 5N-BQW, crashed while returning from Port Harcourt on August 28, 2020. It killed all three occupants.

The AIB’s document noted that the jet was fully fuelled in the Rivers State capital, but had no capacity of jettisoning the content mid-air, yet “there was no fuel left in the fuel tank after the crash.”

Signed by the AIB Commissioner, Akin Olateru, the report said the airliner that was filled the preceding day had 10 minutes of engine run and 20 minutes of test flight on it same day in Port Harcourt.

“The helicopter has an endurance of 3:24h. The operational flight plan filed by the pilot indicated an endurance of 3:15h and an estimated flight time of 2:45h. The helicopter engine was started at 09:15h. The helicopter took off at 09:20h.The helicopter crashed at 12:14h.There was no fuel left in the fuel tanks after the crash. The mast and main rotor blades were found intact during the post-crash inspection,” the agency clarified.

It admitted that the plane had a valid airworthiness certificate, as its Aircraft Maintenance Engineers’ License Validity was expiring February 14, 2022 with Aircraft Ratings of Category A&C Agusta/Bell 206, Bell 212, Sikorsky S76, Eurocopter EC 155 helicopters, while the Certificate of Airworthiness of the chopper expires October 29 this year.

The report read in part: “The pilot’s last medical examination was valid till August 6, 2020. There was no evidence to show that an application for the exemption provided by the All Operators’ Letter (AOL) DG020/20 had been submitted to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

“The pilot’s last proficiency check was valid till August 24, 2020. There was no evidence to show that an application for the exemption provided by the AOL DG018/20 had been submitted to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.”

It also indicated several communications between the ill-fated airplane and Lagos tower until response was lost.

The airline’s Managing Director and Accountable Manager, Abiola Lawal, maintained that seven days to the expiration of the pilot’s proficiency licence, the company wrote the NCAA on August 18, 2020, requesting extension and exemption.

He said the correspondence followed a notice from the regulator to operators with reference, NCAA/DOT/GEN012/20/002.

The letter, according to him, stated: “Given the challenges of the COVID-19 (pandemic) in organising additional crew and training, we hereby wish to request for the exemption/extension of our pilot, Captain Chika Prudence Ernest License ATPL (H) 6245, under the above exemption granted by the DG in the above circular.

“His proficiency expires on August 24, 2020 and his comprehensive medical is valid until August 6, 2023. Captain Prudence is an experienced helicopter pilot and PIC on the Bell 206. We (will) kindly appreciate if this application can be promptly approved."

A woman in Benue State, Mary Jeremiah, has been arraigned for robbing a provision store with a locally-made pistol and knife.

She has been remanded in prison on the order of a magistrates’ court in Makurdi.

The police charged Jeremiah, who lives in Ofoke Ojope, Apa Local Government Area of Benue, with criminal conspiracy and robbery.

Magistrate Erdoo Ter, who did not take the plea of Jeremiah for want of jurisdiction, ordered that she be remanded in the Makurdi Correctional Centre.

Ter then adjourned the case until October 22 for further mention. The prosecution, led by Inspector James Ewache, told the court the case was reported at the police station in Ugbokpo by the complainant, James Sunday of Efu-Ugbokpo, Apa LGA on August 30.
