PSG’s Di Maria gets four-match ban

Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria received a four-match ban on Wednesday for spitting during this month’s fiery Marseille game which saw five players red-carded and claims by Neymar of racial abuse.

Di Maria’s suspension meted out by Ligue 1’s disciplinary commission was for spitting at Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez.

It takes effect from September 29, meaning he can play against Reims on Sunday, returning the weekend of November 8.

Neymar’s accusation that Gonzalez racially abused him will be investigated on September 30, the commission announced.

Neymar was sent off for slapping Gonzalez on the back of the head, accusing the Spaniard of calling him a “monkey”. Gonzalez denies the charge.

The world’s most expensive player was served with a two-match ban last week for that incident in the September 13 fixture at the Parc des Princes.

Also last week PSG defender Layvin Kurzawa incurred a six-match ban for kicking out at Marseille left-back Jordan Amavi, who was hit with a suspension of three games after he too was dismissed.

And Leandro Paredes was banned for two games after he was sent off for a clash with fellow Argentine Dario Benedetto, who was also red-carded and suspended.

Marseille won the game 1-0.

The French league’s disicplinary commission is also investigating accusations that Neymar made racist remarks towards Marseille’s Japanese right-back Hiroki Sakai and made a homophobic slur against Gonzalez.

Any player found guilty of racist or discriminatory abuse risks a ban of up to 10 matches.

36 Governors to hold emergency meeting over NLC planned strike

The 36 state governors are to hold an emergency meeting over the threat by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to embark on an industrial action to demand that the Federal Government rescinds its decision on the recent hike in the prices of petroleum products and electricity.

NLC earlier announced that it would proceed with its planned nationwide protest with effect from Sept. 28 over Federal Government refusal to reverse the hikes in electricity tariff and fuel pump price.

The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) disclosed this in a statement issued by its Head, Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo, in Abuja on Wednesday.

Bello-Barkindo said that the emergency meeting scheduled for 6pm on Thursday would seek ways of settling the rift and find a mutual agreement.

He said that all governors were expected to attend the first NGF emergency virtual teleconference to consider the matter which he described as of urgent national importance.

Bello-Barkindo said that the matter needs to be quickly resolved in order not to worsen the already bad situation of Nigerians as caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Edo election: ‘I was moved to tears’ – Oshiomhole breaks silence on Gov Obaseki’s victory

Immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole, has reacted to the Governor Godwin Obaseki’s victory at the just-concluded governorship election.

Recall that Governor Obaseki was re-elected on Sunday after polling 307,955 to defeat his closest rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who garnered 223,619 votes.

Governor Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, won in 15 Local Government Areas of the State while Ize-Iyamu, who was backed by

Oshiomhole won 3 LGAS.

Reacting, Oshiomhole in a viral video released on Wednesday, expressed gratitude to the people of Edo State.

Oshiomhole, who stated that in life you win some and lose some, added that contrary to claims that he is unhappy about the outcome of the election, he remains strong and healthy.

In the one minute video, the APC chieftain said “In life, you work hard and leave God for the outcome. You do your best and trust God to bless your efforts. I feel good, I feel strong, thank God. In life, you win some and you lose some but life goes on”, he philosophised.

He further stated that he was moved to tears and inspired by the determination of the aged and nursing mothers who endured the harsh weather to cast their ballots.

“If septuagenarians were not frustrated because card their card readers are not working, it inspired me that if at their age they don’t give up, why should I give up.”

“And I ask our people to have faith in our country because we are not going to have another one. This is our country and we must make it great. We must strengthen democracy, we must improve on it.

“No matter the outcome of an election, or a particular edition of a process, have faith in God and have faith in our country.”

Pakistani man buys land on moon as wedding gift for wife

"Love you to the moon and back" is not just a saying for a Pakistani man anymore who has bought a one-acre plot of land on the moon as a wedding gift for his wife.

Sohaib Ahmed, a resident of Rawalpindi, bought the lunar land in the region called 'Sea of Vapour'. The land was bought for $45 from the International Lunar Lands Registry.

Ahmed said that he was inspired by late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput to buy the piece of land on the moon.

The land bought by Sushant in 2018 is part of a region called Mare Muscoviense, or the ‘Sea of Muscovy’.

Several celebrities including Tom Cruise and Shah Rukh Khan own land on the moon.

Nigerian doctor Tunji Funsho, Tony Elumelu among Time’s 100 most influential people

Nigerian physician Dr. Tunji Funsho and African investor and philanthropist, Tony O. Elumelu, have made it to TIME Magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People 2020’ list.

The list, now in its seventeenth year, recognizes the activism, innovation and achievement of the world’s most influential individuals.

Dr. Funsho, Mr Elumelu, and Tomi Adeyemi, a bestselling novelist and creative writing coach are three Nigerians among four Africans on the 2020 list.

Dr. Funsho, a former cardiologist based in Lagos and now the chairman of Rotary International’s polio-eradication program in Nigeria is recognized for his essential role in ensuring Africa’s certification as wild polio-free in August 2020. He is the first Rotary member to receive this honour.

“I’m honored to be recognized by TIME for my part in ensuring that no child in Africa will ever again be paralyzed by wild polio, a disease that once disabled 75,000 African children every single year,” said Dr. Funsho.

“Eradicating the wild poliovirus in Africa was a team effort that required the cooperation and dedication of governments, partners, Rotary members, hundreds of thousands of health workers, and countless parents who chose to have their children vaccinated against polio.”

As the leader of Rotary’s Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee, Funsho has worked alongside Rotary members throughout the country to raise awareness about the importance of polio immunization, encouraged governments and public figures to support polio eradication, and served as a vocal leader and advocate for Rotary’s fight to end polio in Africa.

Dr. Funsho works closely with Rotary’s partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI): the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

As a member of Nigeria’s Presidential Task Force on Polio, he has coordinated immunization and advocacy campaigns with the Minister of State for Health and the Inter-Agency Coordination Committee for Polio Eradication. He has also worked closely with the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation, the Dangote Foundation, the Traditional Leaders Council and the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria.

On 25 August, the African region was certified wild polio-free. This historic announcement means that five of the WHO’s six regions, representing more than 90 percent of the world’s population, are now free of the wild poliovirus. The virus is now endemic in just two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

On his part, Mr Elumelu is recognised for his track record of business turnaround and value creation, and economic empowerment of young Africans.

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and the president of Dangote Industries Ltd, in his remark described Elumelu has a leading proponent of “Africapitalism,” a belief that Africa’s private sector can and must play a leading role in the continent’s development through long-term investments, as well as entrepreneurship and regional connectivity.”

Asides being chairman of UBA Group and Transcorp, Elumelu is the founder and chairman of Heirs Holdings, his family-owned investment company, committed to improving lives and transforming Africa, through long-term investments in strategic sectors of the African economy including financial services, hospitality, power, energy and healthcare.

Reputed as a champion of entrepreneurship in Africa, Elumelu in 2010 created The Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) to empower a new generation of African entrepreneurs. Since inception, the foundation has funded just under 10,000 entrepreneurs and created a digital ecosystem of over one million as part of its 10-year $100 million commitment through the TEF Entrepreneurship Programme.

Heirs Holdings, which serves as a corporate role model for African businesses, and the TEF will both celebrate 10 years of impact in November. Their mission continues to be inspired by Elumelu’s economic philosophy of Africapitalism, which positions the private sector, and most importantly entrepreneurs, as the catalyst for the social and economic development of the continent.

Nigerian-British actor, John Boyega in his remarks described Tomi as the god of ideas. “She’s inspiring a lot of young people to write.

“She creates the very world that we as actors get to play in. And the big-screen adaptation will hire a lot of people and bring more representation to our industry—all that comes directly from Tomi’s imagination. She is going to be very powerful when it comes to bringing stories and ideas to the forefront.”

Erica under fire as Laycon’s genotype stirs controversy

Big Brother Naija Lockdown housemate Laycon’s revelation that he is of the SC genotype, has generated a lot of controversy on social media.

The UNILAG graduate, one of the finalists on the reality show, confirmed that he is a sickle cell carrier.

According to Laycon: “My blood group is Sickle Cell, I don’t like to tell people my genotype because I feel they will think I’m sick.”

Most viewers feel he had disclosed it to Erica, who was disqualified after a bust-up with Laycon and she used it against him during the fight.

Others, however, think he might be using it to secure ‘sympathy votes’, although there is also the argument that he was already one of the big favourites to go home with the N85m prize money on Sunday.

Here are some Twitter reactions:

@itsUchman: Funny how you guys keep saying “now Laycon is definitely the winner”. Omo even if he wasn’t disqualified and they didn’t have a fight or we didn’t know his BG, baba had this show on lock from the 1st or 2nd week. Margins might have been different but he was a sure winner.

@DrOlufunmilayo: Laycon said yesterday he is SC genotype. This is why he’s skinny. Seems only Erica knew. Yet she bodyshamed him. She mocked him for not taking his drugs in a week and that he will die before age 50. I’m in tears about this. That girl is the worst thing to ever come on that show.

@drteepie: If you use other people’s problems you have been told in confidence as a fighting weapon during an argument, you are worst than the devil. What Erica said to Laycon re his SC status is the lowest I have seen of anyone.

@ukonu_obinna: People are just insensitive, which one is Laycon is SC “No wonder he looks that way”. I feel that’s just rude to say,. Like this doesn’t sit well with me. Can’t you just empathize, and leave out how he looks? Gosh!

@HARRYbrixx: Laycon just won BBNAIJA. This his SC story will sell out

@PelumiBenson: Is this news about Laycon being SC true… He didn’t disclose this in the house na or Kayode just didn’t show us ni… I love Laycon’s confidence and strength

@mosefavor1: Laycon is SC? Can’t believe this…… Can’t even hold my tears…. Laycon as I always say, you’re a star and child of Grace. You shall achieve all your goals not even any form of afflictions can stop you dear.

@Felix_Onyemaech: It’s sad to know Laycon is SC but guys pls stop dragging Erica into this sad revelation. There was no way she knew his blood group before she got disqualified. And the words she said to him is what anyone can say when angry. Pls keep Erica out of every negative vibe here pls

@tee_atu: I hear say Laycon d form sickle cell patient now to get sympathy vote over Dorothy… See scam😂😂😂😂😂

@Uchaay_Chi: All of you saying Laycon was looking for pity votes, do you now all see that the guy is been genuine. IF he had wanted the pity votes he would have put in our faces since day 1 that he has SC.

Breaking: IPOB declares sit-at-home on October 1

Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared October 1, 2020 as sit-at-home across Biafraland.

The group said the decision followed credible intelligence alleging terrorist groups plan to slaughter people of the region who intend to celebrate the Independence day.

In a statement by the Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB said its members would join its Yoruba bretheren agitating for Oduduwa Republic, in public protests to mark the day.

The pro-Biafran group stressed complete and total lockdown of Biafraland and other terror ravaged areas of the Middle Belt come 1st of October 2020 was sacrosanct, irreversible and non-negotiable.

It enjoined all Biafrans and every conscious Nigerian to boycott every government organised ceremony designed to eulogise Nigeria.

The statement partly reads: “We the global movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to announce to all Biafrans, friends of Biafra and lovers of freedom all over the world that Biafrans across the globe shall observe a sit-at-home in Biafraland and where permissible in the diaspora, join our Yoruba bretheren agitating for Oduduwa Republic, in public protests to mark the October 1, 2020.

“We therefore, enjoin all Biafrans and every conscious Nigerian, especially those ethnic nationalities reeling from the triple double blow of state sponsored terrorism, bad governance and economic annihilation, to boycott every government organised ceremony designed to eulogise the failure that Nigeria has become.

“This is the time to let the world know how disastrously intolerable human existence is in Nigeria today.

“If you want to see an end to terrorism and organised mediocrity, now is the time to register your anger by ensuring that you and your household sit-at-home on October 1, 2020. Do not risk the life and well-being of your children by allowing them to gather in groups in the open where terrorists may find it easier to blow them up or kidnap them.

“There is credible intelligence that terrorist groups are planning to slaughter our children should they venture out to celebrate or March on October 1st.

“This order is to highlight our position and resolve as Biafrans that we are no longer interested in proping up a crumbling terrorist state.

“The leadership of this great movement in conjunction with supporters of Biafra freedom across the globe have concluded every arrangement to let the whole world know and understand that we are no longer part of this shambolic monument to terrorism and failure.

“As this long expired man made contraption marks her abused independence on October 1st this year, we IPOB will appropriately declare our intention towards the full and irreversible restoration of Biafra sovereignty and independence for all oppresed ethnic groups in Nigeria.

“Complete and total lockdown of Biafraland and other terror ravaged areas of the Middle Belt come 1st of October 2020 is sacrosanct, irreversible and non-negotiable!

“Wholesale slaughter of innocent Judeo-Christians and state sponsored ethnic cleansing cannot be going on in our land at the same time as fake jamborees are being organised by the same sponsors terror attacks,⁹ in order to deflect our attention away from the imminent danger we are all in.

“We therefore urge that all markets, schools and businesses in Biafraland and beyond be shut down as a mark of respect to all those who have died as a result of terrorism against innocent civilians especially Christians, ethnic cleansing in Southern Kaduna and elsewhere across the Middle Belt.

“Everywhere in Biafraland must be under lock for Nigeria and the world to know that we are all united in our march toward total freedom. There should be no public events or ceremonies in Biafraland to avoid any needless loss of lives.”

Russia's Navalny discharged... expected to make full recovery

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who the West believes was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent, has been discharged from hospital after just over a month, the Berlin medical facility treating him said today.

“Based on the patient’s progress and current condition, the treating physicians believe that complete recovery is possible,” Charite hospital said in a statement, adding however that it remained too early to assess any long-term effects of his severe poisoning.

The 44-year-old Kremlin critic and anti-corruption campaigner fell ill after boarding a plane in Siberia last month and was hospitalised there before being flown to Berlin.

He spent 32 days in the Berlin hospital, including 24 days in intensive care, before his release.

Germany has said toxicology tests provide “unequivocal proof” that he had been poisoned by the Soviet-era military-grade nerve agent, which was also used in a separate poisoning in 2018 on ex-double agent Sergei Skripal in Salisbury, Britain.

France and Sweden have since said tests they ran independently corroborate with Germany’s conclusions.

European leaders have demanded explanations from Moscow, with Chancellor Angela Merkel saying that “only Russia can and must” provide answers on the poisoning.

Navalny’s allies say he may have been poisoned by a cup of tea he drank at Tomsk airport in Siberia.

Co-travellers shouted me down when I insisted on social distancing — Airline passenger

A passenger aboard an Abuja-bound aircraft from Lagos has said when he raised the alarm over violation of the COVID-19 social distancing protocol, his fellow travellers shouted him down and asked him to get down if he is not comfortable.

The passenger, who doesn’t want to be named, said the moment travellers passed the security checks, every single COVID-19 guideline is forgotten.

This is happening despite the directives of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 for airlines flying into Nigeria and those operating within the country to maintain physical distancing at the airport and onboard the aircraft.

These were part of the guidelines put in place after the resumption of flights operations in the country, which most airlines have jettisoned.

Also, ahead of the resumption of international flights, the Federal Government had declared that airlines would be fined $3,500 per passenger for breaching protocols and lifting any passenger without a negative COVID-19 test result.

The PTF, during one of its briefing also told newsmen that to maintain physical distancing in the aircraft, it was going to ensure that a seat is left in-between passenger.

However, findings by Vanguard showed that most of the airlines are not maintaining anything near physical distancing, while aircraft are also overloaded.

According to the PTF COVID-19 guidelines, besides non-pharmaceutical measures which include washing of hands, wearing faces mask and shields, and using hand sanitiser, airlines are supposed to maintain physical distancing in the aircraft.

The concept of physical distancing is that every person is considered to be infected and every person maintains a distance of two metres from others.

The aforementioned passenger stated that from his experience, all COVID-19 protocols terminate at the point of boarding the aircraft in Nigerian airports.

Narrating his experience aboard an Abuja-bound aircraft from Lagos a few days ago, the passenger affirmed that the conspiracy theories may still be plaguing the COVID-19 response in Nigeria, as many people on board the aircraft were not bothered by fact that the aircraft was overloaded.

“No one saw the development as something to be worried about,” he noted.

The passenger said: “Before boarding the aircraft, right from the counter, the social distancing guideline is clearly displayed. Also, on the queue, social distancing was also glaring.

“However, the moment you passed the security door to board the aircraft, every protocol or safety guideline ends.

“I was seated with a female passenger in a row of three seats, thinking that we would observe physical distancing by maintaining the two-metre space as advised by the WHO and the PTF in Nigeria.

“Unfortunately, that was not to be, as all the seats in the aircraft were sold out. Every seat was occupied.

“The moment I noticed this, I raised an alarm but to my greatest surprise, I was shouted down by co-passengers who bluntly told me to get down if I was not comfortable with that.”

Furthermore, the passenger remarked that the situation in the aircraft confirmed that many Nigerians are yet to be convinced that the disease exists and also to appreciate the seriousness of the situation as it is in the world currently.

He said the same situation played out on his return trip to Lagos.

Saudi Arabia to allow Umrah pilgrimage to resume from October ― Report

Saudi Arabia will allow the Muslim minor pilgrimage, the Umrah, to gradually resume starting in October, around seven months after it was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Oct. 4, Saudis and foreign residents in the kingdom will be able to perform the Umrah, an Interior Ministry source said in a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency.

Only 6,000 pilgrims per day will be allowed to perform the Umrah at the Grand Mosque in Mecca while ensuring social distancing measures are followed.

On October 18, the kingdom will allow 15,000 pilgrims to perform the Umrah.

Prayers at the Prophet’s Mosque in the city of Medina will also resume then.

Muslims abroad will be allowed to start heading to the kingdom for the pilgrimage from Nov. 1, when 20,000 pilgrims per day will be allowed.

According to official statistics, more than 19 million pilgrims performed the Umrah in 2019.

Starting November, 60,000 worshippers in total will be allowed to pray at the two mosques per day.

This remains below the usual capacity of the mosques.

The reduced capacity will remain in place until authorities decide that the dangers of the pandemic have passed, the statement added.

In March, Saudi Arabia halted the Umrah, which can be undertaken at any time during the year, as part of measures it imposed amid the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Pilgrims will be asked to wear a face mask and maintain a physical distance from one other.

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is developing a mobile application that will be available one week before the Umrah resumes so that pilgrims can register and book on it.

They will also need to follow the guidelines provided there.

In July, the kingdom allowed a limited number of residents to perform the annual main Hajj pilgrimage.

Last week, Saudi Arabia partially lifted a halt on international flights, allowing travel of certain categories of Saudis and foreigners.

These categories included Saudi civil servants and military tasked with official assignments abroad, businesspeople, patients, who need medical treatment abroad, and foreigners, who hold valid visas for work, residency and to visit.

The official said all restrictions imposed on Saudis’ departure and return to the homeland would be completely lifted as of Jan. 1.

In recent weeks, Saudi Arabia has reported a significant drop in virus infection rates.

The country has reported so far over 330,000 cases and 4,542 related deaths.
