Ekiti health workers begin 7-day warning strike on Monday

Ekiti State chapter of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) is to commence a seven-day warning strike on Monday to press home its demand for payment of its members’ outstanding benefits.

The stay-at-home directive is contained in a letter the union addressed to Prof. Kayode Olabanji, Chief Medical Director, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.

The letter dated Sept. 25 was signed by Chairmen of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Comrade C.K. Monde, and Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), Comrade O.O. Farotimi.

The other signatories are Chairmen of Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Comrade A.M. Olaiya, and Senior Staff Association (SSA), Comrade T. Arigbede.

The letter entitled, ‘Notice of 7-Day Warning Strike’, was made available to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday.

JOHESU claimed in the letter that its members were being owed 14 months’ unremitted cooperative deductions.

It listed the other demands to include the issuance of promotion letters and implementation of their financial implications, conversion/advancement of qualified workers, and conduct of 2020 promotion for qualified JOHESU members.

“With reference to our letter dated August 28, 2020, and September 18, 2020 …. we write to inform you of our intention to proceed on a 7-day warning strike.

“It is a fact that based on your letter of September 23, 2020, your response has no commitment toward our agitations.

“It is on this premise that the congress resolved to embark on a 7-day warning strike commencing from Monday, September 28, 2020,” JOHESU said.

EKSUTH management had last year disengaged some workers on the premise that the hospital had an over-bloated workforce which was affecting its capacity to pay staff’ benefits and buy equipment.

Model with 'weird' unibrow says she loves it despite getting backlash for it and says she won't stop

A model who grew a unibrow to embrace a more “unique” style says she’s been harassed online and has even lost work because of it.

“I get mocked mostly on social media sites like TikTok because of my look. People are constantly telling me that I would be ‘pretty’ if I shaved the unibrow,” Haylee Michalski, 22, said. “Some will just [send me] the razor emoji.”

Things first got hairy after Michalski moved from Charleston, North Carolina to New York City in the summer of 2019 and decided to start rocking a more natural look, she said.

Fed up with spending hours plucking, she opted for the Frida Kahlo-style fashion statement, which earned her plenty of compliments in Gotham, she said.

“I wanted to be one of those people who isn’t afraid of what society says about their version of beauty,” she told the outlet.

But when she moved back to her hometown a few months later, she immediately noticed people staring at her, and hateful online comments began rolling in.

She said she’s now bombarded everyday by internet trolls, including ones comparing the bend of her brows to McDonald’s signature golden arches.

“People tell me that I have the McDonald’s logo sign on my forehead. Some say I look like Anthony Davis’ twin sister,” she said, referencing the unibrow-sporting Lakers forward. “I definitely get more hate than positive comments.”

Some modeling agencies have turned her down because of her eyebrow, she said.

“I have been told, ‘The unibrow look is not the right look and nobody wants to book me because of it,’ ” she said.

But Michalski thinks that’s silly logic, considering originality rules the fashion world.

“My advice is just to do whatever makes you feel comfortable,” she said. “I feel proud. I feel confident. I love my unibrow.”

78-year old Grandma apprehends intruder, holds him at gunpoint until police arrived

A shotgun-toting Washington State grandma stopped a would-be home intruder in his tracks and held him until police arrived.

The granny, who only gave her first name, Sandy, said that a man was trying to break into her home.

She knew something was wrong when her dog started barking, she said. When she went to see what was going on, she and the suspect briefly stared each other down.

Then he tried to get away.

“And I said, ‘Oh, no you don’t. You stay right there,’” she told the station. “And I reached over and got my shotgun and I cocked it and I told him to stay right there because he was going to turn and walk away.”

“Told him to go out, sit on the steps,” she continued. “I followed him out. And when he got to the bottom of the steps I told him to sit down and I just stood here with the shotgun waiting for the police to come.”

Sandy said she was “totally calm” through the whole ordeal and told the helpless intruder, “You know, I’ve got grandchildren your age.”

She even asked him why he wanted to break in and got a disturbing response.

“He said, ‘Well, you know, I was really hoping to get laid,’” the granny told the outlet.

In the end, the woman declined to press charges against the suspect and he was released.

“After he was so meek and mild and sat down like I told him to, [it was] empowering!” she said. “I felt like at least I was in charge, I wasn’t afraid.”

Protests, anger as gunmen strike again in Plateau, kill five

Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen struck again on Thursday, killing five persons in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Last Monday, gunmen invaded the Foron District of Barakin-Ladi Local Government Area of the state, killing the District Head, Da Bulus Chuwang Jang. Also the rampaging gunmen on Tuesday attacked a mining site in the Riyom Council area and injured nine miners.

City Round gathered that the gunmen numbering about 20 stormed a drinking joint on Thursday at about 10:45 pm at Gwol village in K/Vom, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State and shot five people dead while one person sustained injuries.

An eyewitness said the attack caused pandemonium in the area as residents fled their homes and fled into the bush for safety, adding that the attackers also damaged property and destroyed farms before leaving.

Reacting to the incident, women and youths took to the streets to protest against the killings.

The Co-ordinator, Emancipation Centre for Crisis Victims in Nigeria, Barrister Dalyop Solomon, condemned the frequent attacks in the state and called on the state government and security agencies to check the act.

He said, “It is unfortunate that we are experiencing this kind of attack after months of respite. The government and the security agencies need to wade in on time before it degenerates to full scale violence. There’s the need for a thorough investigation, arrest and prosecution of those behind this deadly attack”.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Gabriel Ubah, who confirmed the killings of five persons in the community, said the command had commenced full investigation into the incident.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Egbuka, along with other operational personnel of the command had visited the scene of the incident.

According to him, normalcy has been restored to the affected community and more security men drafted to the area to maintain law and order.

How yahoo boys’ are migrating to rural communities to run from the long arm of EFCC

They are young men who live their lives on the fast lane. They love the good things of life but lack the legitimate means to acquire them. Rather than seek legitimate means of fulfilling their fantasies, they took to cybercrimes, defrauding unsuspecting individuals and organisations until they recently came under the radar of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The onslaught by operatives of the anti-corruption agency has since dislodged these young persons from their bases in the urban centres to various rural communities, particularly in the Southwest to escape EFCC’s searchlight.

It was gathered that many remote settlements in Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and Ogun states are now hosts to fleeing internet fraudsters. They include communities like Ikotun, Ojodu-Berger, Alagbado, Abule Egba, Badagry, Ijanikin, Oto-Awori, Lambe, Matogun, Giwa, Oke Aro, Ajuwon, Akute, Ifo, Ewekoro, Ilaro, Ijebu Ode, Sagamu, Ilisan Remo, Itele, Atan, Ogbomoso, Oshogbo, Ado Ekiti, and Akure, safe havens where some of the embattled fraudsters are now recruiting young school leavers into their syndicates.

True to its slogan, ‘you can run but you can’t hide’, however, the anti-graft agency is unrelenting in smoking out the scammers popularly called yahoo boys from their various hideouts. One such was a raid carried out in the early hours of June 16 at Itele, a sleepy community near Ota in Ogun State, in June this year. Residents of the community were roused recently by the unusual presence of EFCC operatives who cordoned off several roads as they searched vehicles that moved in and out of the community in an operation that was to shock unsuspecting residents.

A few minutes later, their targets were picked up in their posh vehicles while one of the scammers escaped in his car.

At the end of the raid, the operatives attached to the Lagos Zonal Office of EFCC arrested five yahoo boys, namely Adeshina Michael, Ayeni Emiloju, Odenigbo Anthony, Afolabi Gbenga and Oyibogbola David Seun.

Posh cars of different brands allegedly acquired with the proceeds of their fraudulent activities were recovered from the suspects.

Investigation conducted by The Nation revealed that no fewer than 32 internet fraudsters who had relocated from Lagos to Ogbomosho in Oyo State were smoked out of their hideouts on Tuesday, August 11 by personnel of Ibadan Zonal Office of the EFCC,

In October last year, anti-graft personnel recovered the sum of N223 million from the bank account of an alleged internet fraud kingpin, Ajayi Gbenga Festus, during a raid on his hideout in Ekiti State.

The suspect was allegedly the head of a syndicate dislodged from the city, who relocated to a remote community in Ado-Ekiti to beat the dragnet of the EFCC.

According to the spokesman of the Ibadan Zonal Head of the anti-graft agency, Mr Friday Ebelo, during a media briefing at Iyaganku, Ibadan zonal office, Festus was working in concert with other cyber criminals overseas.

He described Festus’ cartel as ”highly sophisticated web of a conspiracy designed to illegally access the accounts of individuals and organisations to defraud them of their money.”

He added: “Illicit transactions made through Festus’ Nigerian bank accounts amounted to N223 million. The suspect served as a conduit pipe through which proceeds of crime reached members of the syndicate.”

Ebelo added that Festus had pocketed up to N75 million within eight months from the illicit transactions.

Like others, 26 yahoo boys were smoked out of his Modzak Hotel in Abule Egba, a suburb of Lagos on December 4, 2019.

The raid was carried out by EFCC personnel attached to its Ibadan zonal office on a hotel believed to be a hideout for internet fraudsters.

The operation was a sequel to a manhunt for one Rasaq Balogun, a suspected internet fraud kingpin, whose illicit activities were uncovered during a raid on the hideout of suspected internet scammers in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Balogun was said to have recruited and harboured in his Modzak Hotel (in Abule Egba) yahoo boys to carry out scams on the internet.

The suspected kingpin and 26 other young men whose age ranged between 18 and 35, we’re arrested and taken to the Commission’s Ibadan zonal office for further interrogation.

Also recovered from the suspects were three vehicles, fetish items, laptops, mobile phones, and documents suspected to contain fraudulent data from the suspect.

How I now relate with Mayorkun – Mum, Toyin Adewale reveals

Veteran Nollywood Yoruba actress, Toyin Adewale, has opened up on how she now relates with her son Mayorkun.

Toyin Adewale in a chat with City People also disclosed why she never supported her son initially for going into the music industry and why she still monitors him daily, despite his fame and age.

“It makes me proud and I am happy about it, I never knew Mayowa will go into music. He used to be a junior choir master while in the choir, but never knew he would go this far, because he has always been a very quiet, easy-going person. He is not a loud guy, but you know God’s ways are not our ways, so when he started, I became very happy and proud of him.

Initially I was very afraid, I didn’t even give him my blessing, I said I have been in the entertainment industry for long and I know what it entails, so I didn’t support. It was his father who said Toyin, let’s give him a chance, he studied banking in school.

So, I was like why not go and work with your certificate then do music alongside but my husband convinced me. So, we decided to give him our blessings and today to God be the glory.”

When asked if she listens to his music, Toyin Adewale said

“I know all my son’s music from A to Z, word for word, I know his songs very well, I follow and monitor him all the time. In fact, if he has the power to send me out of Instagram, he would have done that since, because I am always on his page every day, I recently told him I want to join Insta story he said ‘no’, that Instagram was okay for me.”

And she concluded with this advice to parents whose kids are into entertainment, saying “First and foremost, they have a lot of work to do. They should allow their kids to follow their dreams and at the same time, they should follow them with prayers and monitor them because children of these days always come up with different things.

If I show you my phone you will see different pictures that I screen munched from his page, once I see anything unusual, I snap and call his attention to it, he will be like mummy, please give me a breathing space. I would say no ooo, I monitor him always. So, any parent, who wants his/her kids to go into the entertainment industry, should be prayerful and be their guide.”

Shocker! Terrorists kill 3 soldiers, 8 policemen, 4 others on Zulum’s convoy

Jihadist fighters linked to the Islamic State group on Friday killed 15 security personnel in an ambush on the convoy of a governor in restive northeast Nigeria, three security said.

Sources told AFP that eight policemen, three soldiers, and four members of a government-backed militia were killed in the attack on vehicles carrying Borno governor Babagana Umara Zulum near the town of Baga on the shores of Lake Chad.

The insurgents opened fire with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades as the convoy was passing through a village close to the headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force, a military coalition of troops from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

“The governor escaped unhurt but 15 security men on the convoy were killed in a fierce battle with the terrorists”, one source said.

Zulum was on an assessment tour of Baga in preparation for the return of thousands of residents displaced from the town by the jihadists in 2014, the sources said.

The governor flew on a helicopter into the garrison town of Monguno, 60 kilometres (40 miles) away, and headed to Baga in a convoy under tight security, one of the sources said.

All three sources were talking on condition of anonyonimity.

The IS-affiliated Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) group maintains most of its camps on islands in Lake Chad and the region is known as a bastion for the jihadists.

The militant group has recently intensified attacks on military and civilian targets in the region.

In July Zulum’s convoy came under gun attack from ISWAP outside Baga, forcing him to cancel his trip to the town.

Last week the group killed a Nigerian army commander along with three soldiers in an ambush near the town of Damboa.

Civilians plying highway linking Monguno and the regional capital Maiduguri said the jihadists set up daily checkpoints, robbing, killing and abducting passengers.

The decade-long insurgency in northeast Nigeria has killed 36,000 people and forced over 2 million from their homes.

Most of the displaced have been housed into squalid camps where they depend on food handouts from international charities.

Local authorities have been encouraging the displaced to go back to the homes despite concern from aid agencies of the security risks to which the returnees would be exposed.

Last week Zulum said feeding the displaced was not financially sustainable, insisting the only option was for them to return and rebuild their homes and live a “dignified” life.

ISWAP splintered from the main Boko Haram group in 2016 and has gone on to be the dominant insurgent force in the region.

Just In: APC suspends Governor Fayemi

Ekiti State Executive Committee of All Progressives Congress, APC, has suspended Governor Kayode Fayemi.

A statement by the party on Friday said the governor was suspended due to “his numerous anti-party activities, especially his role in the recently concluded governorship election in Edo State, which is contrary to the provisions of Article 21 (A) (ii) of the APC Constitution.”

APC said five days before the Edo election, Fayemi hosted Mr. Femi Fani- Kayode, a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain, in Ado Ekiti and planned a coup against Edo APC.

A second allegation against Governor Fayemi was that he played a role in the governorship election in Oyo State and supported the PDP candidate to defeat the APC candidate.

Tory Lanez has finally broken his silence on shooting popular rapper, Megan Thee Stallion’s feet.

Recall that Megan Thee Stallion in August confirmed that Tory shot her in both feet after a night out in the Hollywood Hills.

However, the former Quarantine Radio host in a new album called DAYSTAR released on Thursday night, narrated his side of the shooting incident.

In the Album opener “Money Over Fallouts” around the 2-minute mark, Lanez denies he shot Megan.

His lyrics: “Can’t cry now, I’m gonna laugh later. Girl you had the nerve to write that statement on that affidavit, knowing I don’t do it. But I’m coming at my truest, trying to keep this shit 200 with you.

“Shorty I can’t prove it but the people in your ear, they are the true ones that I feel that really got you thinking Tory Lanez would do you in for real.

“Don’t forget you was my bitch, I held it down and kept it real, I would never paint no fake picture of you just for some mills and I thought that you were solid too, but look at how you doing me/Look at you doing me, people tryin’ to ruin me.”

Tory later in the song also quizzed Megan’s injuries, rapping, “How the fuck you get shot in your foot, don’t hit no bones or tendons?”

Before the release of the album, Tory had posted an announcement on his Instagram page which read: “To my fans, I’m sorry for my silence but respectfully I have time today.

“There is a time to stay silent, a time to speak and I said all I could say on this PLATFORMS in five minutes.”
