Three policemen have lost their lives in a crash that occurred on the Benin-Ore Expressway in Ondo State while returning from a national assignment in Edo State.
Punch Metro gathered that the policemen were on their way home following the conclusion of the governorship election in Edo State when the vehicle conveying them and their colleagues to Lagos State was involved in an accident in Ore, Ondo State.
While their colleagues survived, with some sustaining varying degrees of injury, the corpses of the three policemen were recovered from the scene of the accident.
The corpses were said to have been deposited in the Ore General Hospital’s mortuary.
It was learnt that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, on Sunday, September 13, 2020, deployed 1,000 policemen to complement the personnel deployed in Edo State by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.
A policeman, who was in the vehicle and spoke on condition of anonymity, said he and his colleagues spent a week in Edo State for the election and had completed their assignment and were on their way back to their stations in Lagos when the accident, which claimed the lives of the officers, occurred last Sunday.

Dwayne Johnson has spoken out in support of presidential candidate Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris in a rare political statement.
The actor said he was going to ‘go big’ and endorsed Biden and Harris after holding a virtual discussion with them both, asking how they were going to earn the respect of the American people.
In a video posted on social media the former wrestler explained that he has been ‘a registered independent for years’ and had ‘centrist ideologies’.
Now he is nailing his colours to the mast of the Democratic Party ahead of the election on November 3.
Dwayne said: ‘We are approximately five weeks away from election day, arguably the most critical election our country has seen in decades.
‘Now that said I’m gonna be pushing the political conversation just a little bit more. I’ve got friends in all parties, but the one thing we all agree on is the conversation and the dialogue, and where that conversation lands, is always the most critical part.
As a political independent & centrist, I’ve voted for both parties in the past. In this critical presidential election, I’m endorsing @JoeBiden & @KamalaHarris.
Donald Trump paid no federal income taxes whatsoever in 10 out of 15 years beginning in 2000 because he reported losing significantly more than he made, according to an explosive report released Sunday by the New York Times.
In both the year he won the presidency and his first year in the White House, Trump paid just $750 in federal income taxes, the Times reported.
Detailing payments gleaned from more than two decades of tax information, the Times report outlines extensive financial losses and years of tax avoidance that deal a blow to the business-tycoon brand Trump has built his political career on.
At a White House briefing Sunday, Trump denied the New York Times story and claimed that he pays "a lot" in federal income taxes.
"I pay a lot, and I pay a lot in state income taxes," he said.
Trump added that he is willing to release his tax returns once he is no longer under audit by the Internal Revenue Service, which he said "treats me badly." The President, however, is under no obligation to hold his tax returns while under audit, despite his repeated claims otherwise.
Trump also refused to answer how much he has paid in federal taxes in the briefing and walked out to shouted questions from CNN's Jeremy Diamond on the topic.
The expansive Times report paints a picture of businessman who was struggling to keep his businesses afloat and was reporting millions in losses even as he was campaigning for President and boasting about his financial success.
According to the newspaper, Trump used the $427.4 million he was paid for "The Apprentice" to fund his other businesses, mostly his golf courses, and was putting more cash into his businesses than he was taking out.
The tax information obtained by the Times also reveals Trump has been fighting the IRS for years over whether losses he claimed should have resulted in a nearly $73 million refund.
In response to a letter summarizing the newspaper's findings, Trump Organization lawyer Alan Garten told the Times that "most, if not all, of the facts appear to be inaccurate" and requested the documents.
The New York Times said it will not make Trump's tax-return data public so as not to jeopardize its sources "who have taken enormous personal risks to help inform the public."
The tax-return data obtained by the newspaper does not include his personal returns for 2018 or 2019.
Middleweight UFC champion, Isreal Adesanya, earned $690,000 after his title defence against Brazilian, Paulo Costa, in UFC 253 at the Flash Forum, Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
The Lagos-born star dominated his opponent in the bout, earning a knockout victory, with the Brazilian bleeding after receiving a series of kicks and punches to his face.
‘The Last Stylebender’ earned a guaranteed $600,000 appearance fee and was also handed a $40,000 promotional fee, with an extra $50,000 performance incentive.
Adesanya’s $600,000 is a 10 per cent increase on his previous fight, while his opponent received $400,000 as appearance fee. Costa would have won $100,000 more if he had defeated Adesanya.
The Nigerian is billed to face the winner between Robert Whittaker and Jared Cannonier in his third middleweight title defence.
The fight comes up October 24.
Adesanya had previously defeated Whittaker to claim the middleweight belt in 2019.
The UFC star says he’ll like to enjoy the victory with loved ones before his next fight.
“I’m ready to go anytime. I can go next week if I want but I want to go spend some time with my family.”
Adesanya’s compatriot, Kamaru Usman, made $640,000 from his unanimous decision win against Jorge Masvidal in July.
European champions Bayern Munich suffered a first defeat for 10 month when their 23-match winning run was ended by a shock 4-1 Bundesliga loss at Hoffenheim on Sunday.
Hoffenheim raced into a 2-0 lead with early goals by defender Ermin Bicakcic and striker Munas Dabbur.
Although Joshua Kimmich gave Bayern a lifeline just before the break, Croatia international striker Andrej Kramaric netted a second-half goal and converted a late penalty to seal the win and move Hoffenheim to the top of the league.
It was the first time Bayern have lost under head coach Hansi Flick in any competition since going down 2-1 to Borussia Moenchengladbach on December 7, 2019.
“Compliments to Hoffenheim, they cut out our space and gave us few chances,” said Flick, who bristled at repeated questions about his team’s tired display.
“We just couldn’t manage to take our chances or play with our usual intensity.”
Hoffenheim coach Sebastian Hoeness is the nephew of Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeness and left Munich’s reserves in July to take over at Hoffenheim.
“We put into practise everything we had worked on, we were dominant from the beginning, managed to always be dangerous and defend well, so I am not surprised by the result,” said Hoffenheim coach Hoeness.
Bayern looked tired, showing the effects of being taken to extra time in the UEFA Super Cup on Thursday before beating Sevilla 2-1 in Budapest.
“We shouldn’t forget that Bayern played 120 minutes four days ago, but we put in a great performance,” added Hoeness.
The loss brings to an end Bayern’s run of 23 consecutive wins, a record for a club in one of Europe’s five main leagues, surpassing Real Madrid’s 22 straight between September and December 2014.
With Robert Lewandowski rested ahead of Wednesday’s German Super Cup showdown at home to Borussia Dortmund — the chance to win a fifth title in 2020 — his 19-year-old understudy Joshua Zirkzee struggled to spark Bayern’s attack.
“We go into every game to win, it didn’t work today, now we focus on Dortmund,” added Flick.
“We will tick off this match and we focus on what we can do better on Wednesday.”
Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has suspended its planned nationwide strike that would have started today, Monday, September 28, in protest against the hike in pump price of fuel and electricity tariff.
Earlier, there were indications that the Federal Government and NLC might reach an agreement to avert the looming nationwide strike.
The Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo(SAN) tweeted that there was hope the industrial crisis might be avoided.
He stated on his verified Twitter handle(@fkeyamo): “Still negotiating with labour at exactly 12.34am. Some progress have been made. Concrete proposals on the table from both sides.
“Details being worked on by the temporary Secretariat. Gradually moving towards a point of convergence. Let’s hope….”
Furthermore, a source told Vanguard that it is possible the tariff will be suspended for two weeks, but said nothing specific about fuel pump price.
The source also said a joint government/Labour committee will be set up to review the issues within those two weeks.

A frosty situation seems to have materialized between two notable Nollywood actors; Mike Ezuruonye and Kunle Afolayan with the former accusing the latter of tribal prejudice.
Apparently, the problem was created by one of Kunle Afolayan’s followers on Instagram when he sent direct mail to the Figurine producer accusing Ezuruonye of scamming women. The moment Afolayan posted the message all hell broke loose as Ezuruonye replied in no kind words.

Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum confirmed the attack on a convoy of government officials by suspected Boko Haram which led to the death of many security personnel.
At least 15 security personnel, comprising soldiers, police officers and operatives of the Civilian-JTF were killed in an ambush while on escort duty to officials of the state government as they headed towards Baga town.
Governor Zulum was billed to officially return the people of Baga to their communities nearly three years after Boko Haram sacked them.
The governor’s spokesman, Isa Gusau, in a statement issued on Saturday explained what happened.
He said three separate convoys, one of the governor, the second, that of a government committee, and the third, a security escort team, were arranged for the trip.
Mr Gusau explained the security team was attacked long after the others had arrived Baga.
Mr Gusau said his boss was saddened by the loss of lives.
One person died and three others sustained different degrees of injuries on Sunday following an accident involving two vehicles in front of Golden Gate, Ikoyi.
Mr. Nosa Okunbor, Head, Public Affairs, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed this while in Lagos.
Okunbor said the accident was as a result of over-speeding by the drivers, saying, “ the vehicles ran into each other at the intersection of the road”
He further said that the crash involved an unregistered Ford Ranger SUV and a Nissan SUV with registration number KD 499 GE.
“They had a head-on collision at the traffic stop junction of the road, our investigation shows that both vehicles were on top speed.
“One person, a man, died while three others sustained various degrees of injuries,” the LASEMA official said.
Okunbor said that two of the injured persons were attended to by the LASEMA’s paramedics before they were taken to the hospital.
He said that the affected vehicles had been moved to a police station.
Big Brother Naija housemate, Erica Nlewedim, was conspicuously missing at the all-white party on Saturday.
However, former contestants like Kiddwaya, Eric, Ozo, Tolanibaj, Wathoni and Prince were present for what will be the last party for this year’s competition.
Erica, interestingly posted a picture of herself in her all-white costume on social media, but never showed up for the event.
It might not be unconnected to the fact that she was disqualified from the reality show, after she got three strikes.
Recall that three weeks ago, Erica was not interviewed by host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, following her disqualification.
Erica became the fifth Big Brother Naija housemate to be disqualified in the history of the show, after Tacha, KBrule, Khloe and Kemen.
As with those before her, organizers had stayed away from associating with disqualified housemates for official engagements.
Ogun State Police Command has arrested eight suspected members of Black Axe (aka Aiye) confraternity.
They were nabbed on September 24 while mourning a colleague.
Public Relations Officer of the command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, made this known in a statement on Sunday.
The names and ages of those in custody are Olatunji Opeyemi, 26; Ayuba Oduola, 25; Sobowale Abiodun, 28; Sobowale Sunday, 25; Adelowo Olalekan, 32; Kareem Lanre, 21; Emmanuel Adebisi, 21; and Tobiloba Wasiu, 20.
The spokesman disclosed that they were nabbed following a complaint to Ogijo police station.
A 16-year-old boy, Onome Iduru, was shot during the cultists’ procession and was rushed to the station.
Oyeyemi said the cultists after opening fire on the victim, took his phone and unleashed terror on the community.
“Upon the report, the DPO Ogijo division, Muhammed Suleiman Baba led his men to the scene where eight members of the violent group were arrested after serious encounter with the policemen.
“A banner designed with the group insignia to announce the death of their member was recovered from them while the injured victim was taken to Oladayo hospital for medical attention,” he noted.
The Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, has ordered the transfer of the suspects to the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.
Thirteen suspected Boko Haram terrorists alongside 6 women and 17 children from Kodila village have surrendered.
The suspected terrorists and their family members surrendered, on Saturday, September 26, to troops of 151 Task Force Battalion at Banki Junction in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
A credible source from the Defence Headquater in Nigeria said they took the decision following the aerial bombardment and aggressive intensive clearance operation of the troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE on their village.
“They survived the aerial bombardment but were starving with nothing to fall back on. They have no choice than to surrender,” the source stated.
The suspected terrorists and their family members are now receiving medical attention at the 21 Special Armoured Brigade Medical Centre.
The suspects are also currently undergoing thorough profiling and investigation in line with global best practice in handling such cases.
