Geneva to introduce world's highest minimum wage of N2.1million per month

Geneva is set to introduce 'the world's highest minimum wage' which will equate to £3,500 (N2,100,000) a month and £41,430 (N24,858,000) a year.

The Swiss city, which has a voter population of around 500,000, held a referendum with two-thirds backing the new measure.

The alterations, which had been rejected by voters twice before in both 2011 and 2014, will now come into effect from October 17.

Geneva is the world's second most expensive city, according to a cost-of-living index compiled by Expatistan. But it was hit particularly hard by the outbreak of Covid-19 due to its reliance on revenue from tourists and business visitors.

Bigger bum helps athletes run faster, new study claims

Unsure who to place a bet on in the men's 100 meters at next year's Olympics? Well, scientists may have a useful mantra for you.

Experts from Loughborough University found that sprinters with a large gluteus maximus -- the muscle that forms the bottom can run up to 44 per cent faster.

The team discovered this 'booty boost' factor after comparing the lower body muscles of of men who were either elite sprinters, sub-elite athletes or untrained.

Elite sprinters -- those with a personal best of under 9.99 seconds in the 100 metres were found to be not only more muscular generally, but also in a very specific way.

While their calf muscles were similar in size to those of their sub-elite counterparts, others -- including the gluteus maximus and hip extensors -- were far bigger.

The findings have the potential to revolutionise the physical training and performance of many athletes, the researchers claimed.

In their study, the researchers used magnetic resonance imaging -- commonly known as MRI -- to measure the size of 23 lower body muscles in 42 different men.

Of these participants, five were elite sprinters, 26 were sub-elite athletes and 11 were untrained men.

Overdose of diet pills, caffeine lands 6ix9ine in hospital

American rapper, 6ix9ine also known as Tekashi was earlier this week hospitalized.

This is reportedly coming after an overdose of diet pills and caffeine.

According to The Shade Room, the 24-year-old, during an interview, confirmed that he was admitted to a Florida hospital on Tuesday following his adverse reaction to the combination of substances.

He said his overdose was a result of taking a cup of coffee with two Hydroxycut pills instead of the recommended daily dosage of one.

Tekashi said the combination of diet supplements and caffeine caused his heart rate to accelerate and began to “sweat excessively” soon after his consumption.

The rapper further revealed that he was using Hydroxycut pills because of his serious weight gain during his time in prison adding that he was more than 200 pounds and has now lost about 30 pounds.

“Tekashi also said he was only taking hydroxycut and not drugs—not just because he doesn’t do drugs but because of his strict probation that would send him right back to the slammer if he was poppianna.''

George Floyd's sister breaks silence urging: 'Don't let my brother die in vain'

George Floyd’s sister has broken her silence to call on Americans to vote “divisive” Donald Trump out of office.

LaTonya Floyd told the Daily Mirror today that George, killed by a white policeman, said Trump ruled the “White Supremacist House”.

And appealing for Joe Biden to become President, she said: “I refuse to allow my brother’s life to have been taken in vain.”

In the four months since George was killed at the knee of a white police officer, his big sister has maintained a dignified silence.

But today, little more than a month from the US elections, LaTonya Floyd feels compelled to speak out to warn: “If Trump is voted in for another four years, we are all going to hell.”

She will never come to terms with the way 46-year-old George died, his face pressed to the road on the corner of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis, pleading in vain for his life, repeatedly telling police officer Derek Chauvin: “I can’t breathe.”

His dying words became a mantra of the Black Lives Matter movement.

LaTonya, 52, recalled how her brother had said Donald Trump, the 45th US President, was governing from the “White Supremacist House”.

And during his first presidential debate with Democrat rival Joe Biden on Tuesday, Trump’s failure to denounce the far-right Proud Boys led to revulsion around the globe, but a surge in recruits for the “hate” group.

LaTonya said: “The first presidential debate shows he is not, nor ever has been, a good president.

“He actively emboldens the far right, people like the Proud Boys, who he told to ‘stand by’ on Tuesday night.

“His words have consequences. People will act on them and further violence will follow. Leaders are defined by their characters, by their conviction, by their will to do what is right. The only character Trump cares for is himself.

“In the four years of his presidency, he has taken America back over 40 years. The country is more divided now than in the times of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. All on his watch.

“He speaks about how no president has done more for African Americans. We all know this is a lie. Even before entering the White House, he ran on a campaign of division. Trump’s America is not united, it is divided. He has hurt more than he has healed and is happy to continue to do so.”

The world was horrified when video of George’s death on May 25 emerged. The officer had knelt on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds until George passed out and later died.

No one was closer to George than LaTonya.

You need only take a short walk around the Bricks neighbourhood in Houston, Texas, where they grew up, to find locals such as Travis “Mugz” Cain, who recall how inseparable George and LaTonya were.

He said: “Before they lived in each other’s shadows, they lived in one another’s pockets as kids.”

George, known to family by middle name, Perry, had four half-siblings, but only his two older sisters, LaTonya and Zsa Zsa, 53, share both the same parents, George and Larcenia.

Until now, she has been too upset to speak, but LaTonya fears progress made by Black Lives Matter will be undone if Trump wins on November 3.

Pleading for her brother’s death not to be in vain, she said: “Perry had Trump’s number, he’d speak to me of how divisive he was. In his mind, Trump didn’t live in the White House, but had made it the White Supremacist House.”

She blames Trump’s behaviour since George’s killing for the “needless violence”, neither she nor her family condone.

LaTonya said: “In the days after Perry’s death, I watched as Minneapolis burned. How it was destroyed. How the troubles then spread across the states. I was as mad as hell over my brother’s death.

“As a family, we were consumed with so many emotions – grief, anger, pain, heartache, it was a never-ending roller-coaster nightmare.

“We are still not off it yet.

“But while we appreciate the passion felt by so many millions of people, the destruction and violence that we saw and continue to see is not the way forward. We are better than that.

“As a family, we are not about that – above all, Perry would not be, too. It is not the way to bring about change.

“Our votes are stronger than any brick that is thrown, that is how we will bring about the change this country needs.”

After George’s death, Trump called the Floyd family, but LaTonya said it was “nothing more than a token gesture”.

She said: “Why did he never condemn my brother’s death? Why did he never join the people he was elected to keep safe on the streets in the aftermath?

“Not once has he joined those who are hurting. Obama would have. George Bush would have. There isn’t a president alive who would not, except Trump.

“The man even uses our military against us. His mantra is law and order, yet it is he who has wreaked havoc.”

LaTonya implored all Americans to get out and vote Trump out of office. She said: “Joe Biden is the only candidate to bring stability back to this country and stop the rest of the world from looking upon us with confusion and disdain.

“Biden is a man of substance, of values. Someone who genuinely cares for all Americans, Democrat or Republican.

“Trump’s handling of Covid and his politicisation of pandemic deaths speaks volumes for how incompetent he is.”

She hopes George’s death will bring change through Black Lives Matter. She said: “The movement is bigger than anything we have seen before. Perry’s death is going to change the world.

“I speak for all my family when I say how much we appreciate the people in the UK who have supported us.

“To all those who have taken to the streets, that have protested in peace in Perry’s name, we are so moved by you, we are so thankful to you.

“Together we can bring about change. To think that out of something terrible, something good can come is a comfort.

“I, like so many of us, refuse to allow my brother’s life to have been taken in vain. We are all 100% behind Black Lives Matter. I have a life, and it matters.

“Change is coming, but only if on November 3 we make the right choice.”

Sudan to strike peace with rebels after decades of war

Sudan’s government and rebels are to sign a landmark peace deal on Sunday in a bid to end decades of war in which hundreds of thousands died — a historic achievement if it holds.

Ending Sudan’s internal conflicts has been a top priority of the transition government in power since last year’s ouster of longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir amid a popular pro-democracy uprising.

Both sides are due to sign the deal in full on Saturday in Juba, the capital of neighbouring South Sudan, after putting their initials to the agreement at the end of last month.

Among the visitors for the signing at 11am local time will be ministers or leaders from Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Uganda, said Tutkew Gatluak, the chair of the mediating team in South Sudan.

“This agreement is important for Sudan and South Sudan,” he said. “If Sudan is at peace there is also peace in South Sudan. We are all one people in two different countries.”

Decades of war

Sudan has been torn by multiple conflicts between the Arab-dominated government that was led by Bashir for three decades and rebels drawn from non-Arab ethnic groups in its far-flung regions.

In Sudan’s vast rural areas, settled ethnic minority farmers have frequently competed for scarce resources with Arab herders, who have often been backed by Khartoum.

Tensions have been heightened by economic hardship, especially after the 2011 secession of South Sudan which deprived the north of three-quarters of its oil reserves.

Multiple civil wars have raged since independence in 1956, including the 1983-2005 war that led to the secession of the south.

The devastating war in Darfur from 2003 left at least 300,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced in its early years, according to the UN.

Under the peace deal, SRF fighters are to be slowly incorporated into joint units with government security forces.

There are however holdout rebel groups who have refused to sign up to the deal.

One of them, the Darfur-based Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) faction led by Abdelwahid Nour, launched an attack on Monday, the army said.

Another, the South Kordofan-based wing of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, has signed a separate ceasefire.

It allows rebels to keep their guns for “self-protection” until Sudan’s constitution is changed to guarantee the separation of state and religion.

South Kordofan and to a lesser extent Blue Nile state have significant Christian populations who have fought for decades to end the imposition of Islamic law by Khartoum.

Ex-Lagos Commissioner,AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef exits APC

Former Lagos Commissioner for Home Affairs Dr AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In his Independence Day message, AbdulLateef said his decision was due to rejection of his movement by some “close leaders” he respected in the party.

The one-time lawmaker launched Iyepe 2023 on Tuesday, a movement to galvanise Lagosians to develop more interest in politics and curb voter’s apathy.

The action led to termination of his appointment as Special Adviser to Speaker Mudasiru Obasa on Religious Affairs.

AbdulLateef thanked Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who he described as a great leader who fought tenaciously for democracy.

“When I joined politics, he was there for me and assisted me greatly to occupy very enviable positions in the government. He has developed so many other individuals in very many capacities. May Allah reward you abundantly,” he said.

He also praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Speaker Mudasiru Obasa, other leaders of the party and the past Governors he worked with.

BP Vice President, Nick Spencer's death confirmed as suicide

The vice president of British Petroleum hanged himself at his £2million home a week after he was made redundant.

Newly-married Nick Spencer, 61, was found dead at his luxury home where he lived with his wife Eve in Buckinghamshire in April.

His inquest heard he spent a decade working for the oil giant BP when he was forced to leave the firm on March 31 this year.

After he was told of the redundancy the successful father-of-two became depressed and worried about managing his finances, Eve told the coroner.

In a statement she said: 'Since he was made redundant he had been depressed.

'He had been looking for a new job and I felt he seemed positive but there was an oil crisis because of Covid-19 and he was worried about remortgaging the house and the finances.

'In the period leading up to his death, he seemed a bit more down and it was the 12th anniversary of a family bereavement.

On the evening before his death, we watched the news and went to bed. We talked about TV and he came to bed at 2am which was unusually late.

'At 6.40am on April 7 he got up. He was normally an early riser and I went back to sleep. I later went into the study and saw the letters he had written. I opened the one addressed to me and called the police, I was very worried.'

The first police officer to arrive at the home in Beaconsfield, Bucks., discovered Mr Spencer hanged in the house's garage. Eve identified the body as her husband at 10.30am.

Pathologist Dr Steven Corrigan confirmed the cause of death as hanging.
