Edo college of education lecturer commits suicide

Tragedy struck staff, colleagues of College of Education, Ekiadolor in Edo state as a principal lecturer of the school identified as Friday Osadolor has committed suicide in his Obakhavbuaye, off Ekenwan Road residence.

His lifeless body hanging in a rope around his neck with a protruding tongue and the rope tied to the rail of one of the windows in the apartment was recovered by the police attached to Oba Market police station.

The Edo lecturer who committed suicide was said to be in his 50s was a member of the College of Education Academic staff Union, (COEASU), and a principal lecturer at the Department of Adult education.

Osadolor was reported to have complained bitterly to close associates over his inability for lack of money to tend to his failing health and take care of his family. But he did not leave any suicide note.

Sunday Vanguard gathered that last Wednesday the late lecturer told a colleague that he was tired of begging for money from friends to cater for his family needs and his health challenges.

None of the family members agreed to talk to the media. One of them said “This is an abomination in our culture and you don’t expect me to be talking about this.”

However, the Chairman of COEASU in the school, Comrade Fred Omonuwa, said yesterday that their colleagues died as a result of lack and inability to access medical and appealed to the state government to pay the workers their 13 months unpaid salary.

He said “It is clear the death came as a result of lack and inability to access medical facilities. Some months ago he became very sick and depended on friends for assistance but very recently he started complaining of getting tired of consistently begging to survive.

“Of course, everybody knows that the Edo state government owes us 13 months of salary which we have continued to agitate for even before the election but it was tagged “political agitation” the man couldn’t provide for himself. His wife just had a baby. We were surprised yesterday (Friday) that he took his own life.

Before he committed suicide he spoke to some colleagues on Wednesday complaining bitterly about his inability to access medical facility and becoming very ashamed of begging friends for money to treat himself.

“We are aware some friends in Lagos and Benin have done their best in the past few weeks by providing money for him and yesterday he took his life by hanging. We are very much aware that the suicide he committed was as a result of lack of money”.

LASU sets to matriculate newly admitted students, October 14th

The management of Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, has announced October 14th for the matriculation of her newly admitted students, for the 2019/2020 academic session.

This was contained in a statement confirmed by the school’s Centre for information, Press and Public relations, CIPPR.

Part of the statement reads: “Lagos State University [LASU] will hold its Matriculation Ceremony for the newly admitted students for 2019/2020 academic session as follows: Date: Wednesday, 14th October 2020. TIME: 10:00a.m prompt. VENUE: University Main Auditorium, Ojo,“ the statement said. 

Meanwhile, the spokesperson, LASU CIPPR, Mr Ademola Adekoya, has stated that only 10 selected students from each Faculty will be allowed into the venue of the matriculation ceremony as part of safety measures to stem the spread of coronavirus.

His words: “Please note that only selected ten (10) students per Faculty would be allowed to enter the venue of the Matriculation Ceremony.” Adekoya noted.

World’s hottest Grandma” celebrates her 50th Birthyday

Dubbed the ‘world’s hottest gran,’ Gina Stweart recently celebrated her 50th birthday two months after she underwent cryotherapy to “rejuvenate” her body.

Gina uses freeze therapy to maintain her youthful look and has gained a huge following on Instagram.

To celebrate her landmark age, she stayed at the five-star Sheraton Grand Resort Hotel with her two daughters.

Gina told Daily Star Online:

“I’m staying in a beautiful beach villa at the five-star Sheraton Grand Resort Hotel on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. I’m surrounded by my family. Spoilt and enjoying the beautiful sunny warm weather.”

On the big day itself, the mother of four enjoyed the sights of the picturesque resort after being treated to a bunch of flowers, as well as jewellery, Champagne and a cake.

Her family also showed their love for her with a special message to be broadcast in the sky. She said:

“My family surprised me with helicopters flying past saying ‘Happy 50th birthday Gina’ when we were at lunch around the pool.”

Gina has been very open about her beauty regime, which was recently taken to new extremes with a trip to the cryo-chamber. She said:

“It’s three minutes a session and I literally freeze myself to -110C for three minutes a session. It’s literally colder than the North Pole. It’s amazing for skin collagen and health, the effects are like rejuvenation for the whole body and each session burns up to 800 calories.”

Stewart who came in at 12th place after she was in the running for the coveted Miss Maxim Australia 2018, told Daily Mail Australia,

“Being a grandma doesn’t mean you have to wear the floral granny undies, I’m not hanging up my sexy lingerie just yet.”

It is gathered that she stays away from cofee and alcohol to maintain her looks.

She is scared of needles and as a result steers clear of botox instead, she douses herself in rosehip oil and eats a protein-rich diet.

She usually eats eggs to kickstart for breakfast and enjoys rye cracker, cottage cheese and avocado for lunch. For dinner, she eats either chicken, fish or turkey mince with salad or beans, broccoli and sweet potato.

EFCC arrests Apostolic Church Pastor Adesoju working in cahoots with Yahoo Boy

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Gombe Zonal office, has arrested an Ile-Ife, Osun state Apostolic Church Pastor Gbenga Moses Adesoju, in connection with a N12.7m Yahoo Yahoo fraud.

Adesoju was arrested with one Adebayo Olawale of Fashina Road, also in Ile-Ife for defrauding one Umar Hayatu of Lafiya quarters, Dukku Local Government Area of Gombe State.

The duo were apprehended in Ile Ife following a petition jointly written by the relatives of Umar Hayatu.

The petitioners alleged that the suspects conspired and defrauded the victim via social media platforms and phone calls under the pretence that he won a car, some expensive phones and offer of employment into a juicy position.

Adebayo, the prime suspect, contacted the victim using fake Facebook account names; Williams Angellina and Omolola Adebayo.

He deceived the victim into believing that his Adebayo parents have a Company abroad and will make Hayatu the Nigerian Manager of the Company in Lagos.

The suspect further sent the victim various fake pictures of houses and cars that would be given to him as fringe benefits as soon as the company commences operation.

He also promised him 30,000 US Dollars and expensive gifts such as iPhone and Jewelleries.

Preliminary Investigation revealed that N12, 798, 387.00, proceeds of the fraud, were traced to the suspect’s account in a new generation bank.

Pastor Gbenga, his alleged accomplice received a car (BMW), a plot of land and various sums of money from the proceeds of crime for his spiritual intervention.

Both suspects have volunteered useful information and would be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

BBNaija 2020: Why I haven’t spoken to Erica – Laycon

BBNaija 2020 winner, Laycon has said he is yet to speak with Erica after leaving the reality show.

Laycon who had an altercation with Erica, leading to her disqualification, told the BBC, that he has not spoken to her because he is very busy prioritizing and ‘adjusting to his new schedule.

He said, ”I have not spoken to Erica, in fact I don’t have a phone. Anything I am using now I just collected it to make sure that I am online to do all these processes.

”I have not had time to buzz people because things I am trying to run are plenty. I am still recording songs in between interviews and I still have to sleep.”

When asked if there are plans to sit and talk to Erica when he has the time Laycon said,” it might happen but right now my priority is adjusting to the new life and moving forward. When I calm down I will think of how to deal with things that have happened.

The UNILAG graduate who maintained that he was not responsible for Erica’s disqualification said he avoided the conversation about her ‘trying to kiss him because he would not want her to blow up the conversation and react in a way that might have led to another strike.

”I had no idea what was happening a night before her disqualification. I just had to control how I would react because I feel she is a wonderful person and she was not herself that night.

”I would have addressed the kissing conversation if I felt like it would not escalate to a point where a huge argument will emerge, bearing in mind that she was on two strikes already.”

Ekiti bank robbery: Police recover 3 cars, reveal how robbers overpowered policemen

The police in Ekiti State said on Saturday that they have recovered three vehicles allegedly used by the armed robbers who attacked the WEMA Bank branch at Iyin Ekiti in the Ifelodun Irepodun Council area of Ekiti State on Friday.

The Commissioner for Police in the state, Tunde Mobayo, who confirmed that there was no casualty, said the police had also recovered “some Improvised Explosive Device, some raps of Indian hemp, alcoholic drinks and two handsets”.

Mobayo, in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer for the command, Sunday Abutu, titled ‘Bank robbery in WEMA Bank, Iyin Ekiti and the recovery of three vehicles’, enjoined the citizens “not to be apprehensive as serious effort is ongoing to ensure the arrest of the suspects”.

The commissioner stated that at about 3.55pm on Friday, “a group of heavily armed robbers numbering 10 with one Volkswagen Golf with Reg. No. GED906AA, one Acura MDX Jeep with Reg No. LSR327CD and one Toyota Camry Car with Reg No. GED106ER stormed the branch of WEMA Bank in Iyin Ekiti, overpowered the mobile policemen posted to the bank due to their large number and robbed the bank. Although, there was no casualty.

“A swift reinforcement from the police to the scene made the robbers retreat with the three vehicles. The police operatives however, gave the armed robbers a hot chase, exchanged fire with them during which they abandoned the three vehicles and took to their heels into the forest.

“The Operatives of the Ekiti State Police Command which comprise the Police Mobile Force, Special Anti Robbery Squad, SAFER HIGHWAY as well as the local vigilantes led by the Divisional Police Officer are currently combing the bush for the possible arrest of the suspects”.

Mobayo also implored all the good people of Ekiti State “to be vigilant and report to the nearest police station any suspicious movement or suspected person or group of persons they see in their Communities or call Police Control Room Number on 08062335577”.

Assault: Broadcasters beg Alaafin to strip K1 of Mayegun title

Broadcasters under the aegis of Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria, on Friday, berated a popular Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde, popularly called KWAM 1, for allegedly brutalising an Ogun State-based broadcaster, Wole Sorunke.

Sorunke aka MC Murphy, a popular radio presenter and event anchor, was allegedly beaten black and blue by KWAM 1 and his boys on Thursday night at the 60th birthday party of the Olu of Itori, Oba Abdulfatai Akamo, in the Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Punch correspondent gathered that both Ayinde and Murphy were invited to the party to perform as musician and compere, respectively.

The musician allegedly disrupted the party, which had some prominent persons in attendance.

Addressing journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Friday, FIBAN President, Desmond Nwachukwu, described the incident as unbecoming of the artiste and holder of the ‘Mayegun of Yorubaland’ title.

Nwachukwu alleged that Ayinde, aka K1 De Ultimate, brutalised, harassed and humiliated the FIBAN member over what he called a minor issue and appealed to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, to immediately strip the Fuji star of the title bestowed on him.

The FIBAN president described Ayinde’s conduct as a mockery of Yoruba race, while declaring him as unfit for the title, adding that the leadership of broadcasters association had reported the matter to security agencies and vowed to take legal means to ensure justice was served.

He said, “We would like to tell His Majesty that we are all humans and we can make mistakes. This is a grave mistake he has made because, as far as we are concerned, the holder of the ‘Mayegun of Yorubaland’ title must be a man that commands respect and carries himself pretty well, understanding that the image of His Majesty and the entire Yoruba race is what he goes about with.

“We would like to tell His Majesty that it is not too late to strip him of that title. We have to understand that this is Yorubaland and this is where culture and tradition are held with a lot of candour.

“And I say without any reservation that the conduct of Wasiu Ayinde Marshal at the 60th birthday of the Olu Itori is the least expected. He does not merit the title by that conduct. It is not just a slap in the face to broadcasters in Nigeria and across the world; it is indeed a slap in the face to the Yoruba.”

While sharing his ordeal, Sorunke said he was attacked shortly after he had taken his client to the stage to be eulogised by Ayinde.

According to the broadcaster, while on stage, Ayinde snubbed him alongside his client, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Olageospatial Global Investment Company, Fasina Olajide.

Sorunke said he was shocked by the attitude of Ayinde to him and his client and left the stage with his client.

He alleged that the Fuji star and some of his boys simply identified as KC and Gaji got off stage and “descended on” him where he was sitting.

The broadcaster said it took the intervention of some of his supporters and other members of the gathering to rescue him from the irate artiste and his boys.

Sorunke, who showed journalists his swollen cheeks and lips, noted that Ayinde had later expressed regret over the assault and apologised to him.

He said he decided to make the matter public and seek justice in order to serve as a deterrent to the musician, who, according to him, has an alleged penchant for beating up people at the slightest provocation.

When contacted, Ayinde’s media manager, Kunle Rasheed, denied the involvement of his boss in the violence at the party.

Harvey Weinstein charged with six more counts of s.e.xual assault and faces 140 years in prison

Harvey Weinstein has been charged with six more counts of s.e.x.u.a.l assault in California.

The charges brought against the disgraced film producer, 68, involve two victims from incidents that allegedly happened more than a decade ago.

It comes after Weinstein was convicted of r*pe in New York in February.

Prosecutors have added six additional counts of s.e.xual assault to the existing charges, which include rape and s.e.xual battery.

The new allegations against Weinstein claim he r*ped a woman at a hotel in Beverly Hills between September 2004 and 2005, prosecutors said.

He is also accused of r*ping another woman on two separate occasions in November 2009 and November 2010 at a hotel in Beverly Hills.

Los Angeles County district attorney Jackie Lacey said: "I am thankful to the first women who reported these crimes and whose courage have given strength to others to come forward.

"The willingness of these latest victims to testify against a powerful man gives us the additional evidence we need to build a compelling criminal case."

Weinstein, who is serving a 23-year prison sentence in New York, is alleged to have attacked five women in California from 2004 to 2013.

Panic in Ekiti as robbers attack commercial bank

A gang of robbers on Friday attacked a second-generation bank at Iyin Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun local government area of Ekiti State and carted away several millions of naira.

The 6-man gang armed bandits besieged the bank around 3.30pm and blasted the security door with explosive devices suspected to be dynamite before moving straight to the banking hall for the devilish intention.

An eyewitness confirmed to journalists that the robbers had shot sporadically into the air, scaring traders and bystanders at a nearby market before gaining entry into the banking hall.

Residents were said to have run in different directions due to the severity of the gunshots, which the source said had sent fear among the people.

Vehicles travelling across Ado-Iyin-Aramoko-Efon road had to take a detour to prevent being caught in the web of gunshots.

“In fact, the police disappointed us. They disappointed the people of Iyin today. The robbers robbed for over 40 minutes without any challenge.

“They came in two vehicles, shot into the air and scared the people around away. In fact, those in the nearby market left their commodities and ran for their lives.

“The police station along Igede Ekiti was not up to 500 metres while the police patrol point along Ado Ekiti should be a kilometre away, but none of them responded for over 40 minutes the robbers operated.

“But we thank God nobody was killed, but the agony of the gunshots was too much on the locals”.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, Mr. Sunday Abutu, said the police upon receiving the information immediately visited the troubled spot.

“We got a distress call from Iyin Ekiti about the robbery and we immediately dispatched our men and officers to the place.

“I want to confirm to you that the robbers are being chased as I speak with you and the determination is to effect their arrest.

“We are assuring the people that the hoodlums shall be arrested and brought to justice. Ekiti is not a safe haven for robbers and that we shall continue to sustain”.

The police had on Thursday raised the alarm that some bandits were planning to invade the state and wreak havoc on the people.

SIP school feeding: Man jailed 125 years for N12.9m fake contract

Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri has convicted and sentenced Allen Abel to a cumulative term of 125 years in prison.

He was found guilty of fraudulently obtaining food items valued at N12,879,800.

The convict had claimed that he was executing a Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs’ School Feeding contract.

The feeding programme is under the Social Intervention Programme (SIP) of the Federal Government.

Abel was first arraigned before Justice Aisha Kumaliya on Thursday, July 2, 2020, alongside Suleiman Adamu, Usman Adamu and Kingsley Madubuagu by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

They faced a 20-count charge that bordered on forgery, possession of false documents, impersonation and obtaining by false pretence.

The offences were contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

Abel pleaded guilty to all charges upon arraignment.

Delivering judgement, Justice Kumaliya sentenced him to 7 years imprisonment each on counts 1 to 6, and 9 without an option of fine.

Abel got 5 years imprisonment each on counts 7, 8 and 11-20, respectively, without an option of fine.

All sentences are to run consecutively.

The convict is to restitute N12,110,000 to Lele Foresight Construction Company and N769,800 to HIE Global Investment Limited.

Appeal Court upholds Diri’s election as Bayelsa Governor

The Court of Appeal has set aside a ruling of the Bayelsa State Governorship election petition tribunal that nullified the election of Diri Duoye as the validly elected governor of Bayelsa State.

In a majority judgement delivered in Abuja on Friday, the court held that the petition by the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP) was statute-barred, and the tribunal had no jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

The court also said that the tribunal was not the proper forum to entertain the petition as it was wrong to have held that the candidates of ANDP were validly nominated.

The Bayelsa State Gubernatorial Petition Tribunal had in August nullified the election of Mr Diri.

The election was nullified based on a petition by ANDP which argued that it was unlawfully excluded from participating in the election.

Buhari sends get-well message to Trump

 

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a message to virus-gutted US President Donald Trump and his wife, wishing them quick and full recovery.

Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to Buhari on the media said is joining Americans and other well wishers to pray for the Trumps healing.

Trump announced early today that he and his wife Melania had been confirmed positive to coronavirus.

At the moment, the 74 year-old president only has slight symptoms.

Panic as BBN finalist, Dorathy Bachor rushed to the hospital

Bbnaija finalist, Dorathy Bachor is currently battling for her life after she was hospitalized during the early hours of today.

A lady known as Cynthia Bachor, took to her Twitter page to announce that Dorathy was rushed to the hospital in the early hours of the morning. 

Cynthia Bachor who is widely known as Dorathy's sister, asked members of the public to remember Dorathy in prayers, and pray for her to get well soon.

Though she did not give details about what is really wrong with her, she said that her health condition really got her scared.

A lot of people believe that she probably must have broken down because of stress, because since the housemates left the house, they have been on media tour, and that is enough to sap their energy and break them down.

She further asked Dorathy’s fans to pray for her “baby” to be back on her feet as soon as possible.
