NULGE chairman docked for N17.5m fraud

Otsapa Ubani Otsapa, chairman of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Ado Local Government Chapter, Benue State, has been docked by the EFCC for alleged criminal conspiracy, abuse of office and diversion of public funds to the tune of N17.5 million.

Otsapa’s case is before Justice Moris Ikpambese of the Benue State High Court, Makurdi.

One of the two-count charge reads: “That you, Otsapa Ubani Otsapa being Chairman of National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Ado Chapter, between 2016 and 2019 in Ado Local Government area of Benue State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, was entrusted with the sum of N17,552,400.00 by the NULGE state chapter for the welfare of its members, but dishonesty misappropriated the said sum and thereby committed an offence, contrary to Section 312 of the Penal Code (CAP) 124 Laws of Benue State, and punishable under Section 313 of the same Law”.

He pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charge.

EFCC counsel, George Chia-Yakua prayed the court for a trial date and an order to remand him in custody pending trial.

But the defence counsel, Abraham Aruta, applied orally for the bail of his client on personal recognizance.

Justice Ikpambese, however, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N10 million with one surety in like sum.

The surety must be a public officer on grade level 12 and above, and must provide letters of his first appointment and last promotion. He is also to submit a recent passport photograph.

The case was adjourned till December 3, 2020 for hearing.

Trouble started for Ubani following a petition received by Commission, alleging that he diverted N17.5 million contributed by members of the union in the State for the welfare of members.

Dozens injured as 33-storey building in South Korea goes up in flames

Dozens of people were injured after a 33-storey apartment building went up in flames on Thursday night in the South Korean city of Ulsan, according to local media reports.

By early Friday morning, 88 people who had either fled the fire or been rescued had been taken to hospital, Yonhap reported, citing rescue services.

Most had low-level injuries, including from smoke inhalation.

It was not immediately clear if anyone had died in the blaze.

The fire, which is thought to have started somewhere between the 8th and the 12th floors before spreading to the upper storeys, has been brought under control.

It, however, remains unclear whether there is a risk of collapse.

Some outlets showed footage of the structure engulfed in flames and slabs of burning concrete falling to the street below.

Strong winds are thought to have caused the blaze to spread rapidly.

There have been no reports of fatalities so far.

Rescue workers from the fire brigade had tried to evacuate the apartment building’s 380 residents as quickly as possible, the report said.

Some 50 people fled to the roof of the building when the fire started.

Ulsan is a city in the south-east of the country with a population of 1.2 million people.

Port Harcourt-based lawyer narrates how she was nearly killed in kidnappers’ den

Bisola Ajayi, a Port Harcourt-based lawyer, who was kidnapped at Rumukwurusi, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State recently, has said she was almost killed by her abductors.

Ajayi was rescued from kidnappers’ den by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit the Rivers State Police Command four days after her abduction.

Fondly called Paullete, the 25-year-old lawyer, who spoke to newsmen at the command headquarters said her abductors concluded to kill her after her family was unable to pay the ransom of two hundred million naira for her release.

The rescued Port Harcourt-based lawyer, however, commended Rivers State Governor, the leadership of Nigeria Bar Association in national and state levels, as well as the Rivers State Police Command especially the Anti-Kidnap Unit of the Command for their efforts in securing her release.

“On Sunday evening, unknown gunmen came, attacked me and even shot at me. They eventually took me away in front of my family. As they took me, they told me they had killed my family members.

“I don’t know where they took me to but they said they were going to ask for a ransom of N50million. And by the next day, the ransom had been increased to N200million because everybody had reported that I was missing.

“I want to thank the Governor of Rivers State, the NBA President, the NBA Chairman in Port Harcourt, the Commissioner of Police and the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for all the efforts made to rescue me because as at Wednesday they had decided that they were going to kill me.

“Some of them were violent because they just kept hitting me and some of them were saying that they were going to let me go if the ransom was paid.

“At some point, they got very frantic that they threatened to kill me because they were certain that with the news that had gone round, somehow something was going to go wrong. They were planning to move me into the slump to kill me,” she said.

On his part, the member of British High Commission, Paul Nyulaku, who disclosed that he was kidnapped along Mgbuoba Link Road, said his abductors rough-handled him and threatened to kill him.

Earlier, Rivers State Commissioner of Police CP Joseph Mukan said operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit who carried out the operation were professional in their conduct.

He said, “In the wake of the operation, one of the kidnappers, Chinedu Chigbu ‘m’ aged 39 who was keeping watch over them was arrested while one other was fatally wounded in the exchange of gunfire. He was taken to the hospital where he was confirmed dead while others escaped into the bush with gunshot wounds. Their camp was immediately destroyed.”

Again, Nigeria’s Super Eagles aren’t on FIFA 21

FIFA 21 will released this week, and while gamers will be able to play as all of the world’s biggest clubs, they won’t be able to take control of Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

The West African are one of the many African nations who have been neglected on the game, as while FIFA offers fans the prospect of playing with a range of international teams, Caf only receives meagre representation.

Of the countries available on the game, there will be some African teams included, with the likes of Egypt, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire and South Africa all playable on the game.

It’s great news for fans of these nations, but too many supporters of Africa’s national teams are set to be left disappointed.

This has nothing to do—as some have suggested—with the teams’ standing in the world game.

None of the six top-ranked African teams in the Fifa World Rankings have been included in the video game, this is a list that includes Senegal (20th), Tunisia (26th), Nigeria (29th), Algeria (35th), Morocco (43rd) and Ghana (46th).

Egypt—currently ranked 51st in the world—are the top African team who are playable, which will come as a bitter blow of fans of those clubs at the pinnacle of the standings currently.

Some have speculated that Nigeria aren’t present on the game because EA Sports don’t have the licence to use the Super Eagles, but this isn’t entirely accurate.

While they may not have access to use the rights of the national side, that alone doesn’t prevent them from including the West African giants in the game.

This year—as has been well publicised—EA Sports have the rights to use neither Portugal nor Italy in this year’s game, but both have been included without their official federation logos anyway.

The last time Nigeria were available on a FIFA game was FIFA 2008, and it’s too long for fans in Nigeria and the many Super Eagles fans of Nigerian origin around the world.

Barnsley defender Bambo Diaby banned for two years over use of prohibited substance

Barnsley defender Bambo Diaby has been banned by the FA for two years after pleading guilty to use of a prohibited substance.

UK Anti-Doping officials found traces of Higenamine in a urine sample provided by the 22-year-old following Barnsley's match against Blackburn on 23 November 2019.

An FA statement read: "Bambo Diaby has been suspended from all football and football-related activity for two years following a breach of The FA's Anti-Doping Regulations.

"The Barnsley FC defender provided an in-competition urine sample to The FA and UK Anti-Doping officials on 23 November 2019 that was found to contain Higenamine once analysed.

"The World Anti-Doping Agency classifies Higenamine as a prohibited substance at all times and he was subsequently charged by The FA for a breach of its Anti-Doping Regulations.

"While Bambo Diaby admitted the charge, he did not establish how the Higenamine entered his system. As such, an independent Regulatory Commission imposed the mandatory two-year ban.

"The suspension is effective from the date of the player’s provisional suspension on 17 January 2020 and will run up to and including 16 January 2022."

Diaby took to Twitter immediately after the announcement, where he maintained his innocence and insisted he would fulfil his "dream".

Woman is charged with deliberately transmitting HIV to her friend's baby by breast-feeding him

A woman has been charged with deliberately transmitting HIV to her friend's baby by breast-feeding him in Zimbabwe.

The 23-year-old woman, from Harare, infected the 10-month-old boy when she was given the child to babysit by her friend in August.

The baby started crying while playing with other youngsters and the suspect started breast-feeding him in front of the other children, local media reported.

The woman, who has not been identified, allegedly knew that she was HIV positive at the time, and it is unclear why she ignored the risk.

One of the children who witnessed the incident told the boy's mother who subsequently reported it to the police, according to state media.

The woman appeared at Harare Magistrates' Court at the end of last month and was initially charged with ill-treatment of a minor under the Children's Act.

The 23-year-old has since been charged with deliberate transmission of HIV and was granted Z$500 (£1) bail ahead of her trial on October 19.

HIV-positive women are discouraged from breast-feeding their babies as it poses a risk of transmission.

However, the issue is controversial among medics as several recent studies have shown that there is a negligible risk of transmission if the mother and baby are undergoing antiretroviral therapy.

The British HIV Association says: 'Only breastfeed if your HIV is undetectable AND both you and your baby are free from tummy problems AND your breasts and nipples are healthy with no signs of infection.'

The NHS, on the other hand, advises against it.

'Do not breastfeed your baby if you have HIV, as the virus can be transmitted through breast milk.' The NHS website says.

In Zimbabwe, HIV-positive women with access to formula and clean water are encouraged to use powdered baby milk.

When ISIS attacks Vatican, ‘you would wish I was elected President’ – Trump blasts Pope Francis

US President, Donald Trump has replied Pope Francis, who earlier criticized him and described him as non-Christian.

Trump responded to the criticism at a campaign rally in Kiawah Island, S.C., warning the pontiff about the Islamic State, who he said “their primary goal is to get to the Vatican.”

“If and when the Vatican is attacked,” he said, “the pope would only wish and have prayed that Donald Trump would have been elected President.”

The President had earlier in his speech, said, “I like the pope.”

Before the Catholic pontiff arrived at the Mexican border, President Trump had frowned on the visit, describing Francis as a politician and accused him of acting at the behest of the Mexican government.

Trump, a Presbyterian, has been trying to make inroads among evangelical voters as he seeks reelection come November.

“I think that the pope is a very political person,” he said.

When asked about Trump’s comments, Francis laughed, saying, “Thank God he said I was a politician because Aristotle defined the human person as ‘animal politicus’.

“So at least I am a human person. As to whether I am a pawn, well, maybe, I don’t know. I’ll leave that up to your judgment and that of the people.”

Nigerian rapper, Olawale Hassan, jailed for r.a.p.e in UK

A Nigerian rapper based in the United Kingdom, Olawale Hassan popularly known as Goldie 1, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for r3ping a woman.

According to bbc, the 33-year-old, who lives at Falcon Avenue, Grays, Essex, attacked the victim in Southend in 2017 after claiming he was a music producer, officers said.

However, during his trial, he denied the three counts of r3pe and one charge of assault by penetration.

Essex Police has described him as “manipulative and calculated”.

Detective Constable Victoria De’ath, of the force, praised the woman, in her 20s, for her “courage” in reporting the attack.

It was gathered that Hassan targeted the woman while she was out with a friend in February 2017. She turned down his requests for her number and to accompany him to his hotel room before he promised to get her home safely after her friend left.

Instead, he parked his car on the seafront and locked its doors when she tried to flee before attacking her.

He later took her home where she called the police.

Senate President Lawan kicks against scrapping of FSARS

Senate President Ahmad Lawan on Wednesday kicked against scrapping of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS).

He made this known during a session at the Senate House as lawmakers deliberated a motion on the recent extrajudicial killings carried out by some agents of FSARS.

Lawan said; “I think that this is the situation that should be properly investigated. Those involved in recent incident should be arrested and prosecuted.

”The law should take its due course. This is not acceptable. Nigerians need to know what happened to those who have killed Nigerians.

”There are good people and bad people in SARS. Scrapping of agencies when you have mistakes may not be the best position. Rule of law should be put in place.

”If you scrap SARS, you lose the chance of getting those doing well to continue to do well” Lawan added.
