Elderly couple found dead by each other are said to have agreed to commit suicide as police finds evidence

An elderly couple found dead suffering gunshot wounds near a hiking trail in Colorado died in a 'suicide pact', it has been revealed.

Leroy 'Lee' Vigil, 73, shot his wife Stella Vigil, 72, before turning the gun on himself on Friday after they went on a hike in Colorado Springs, according to the autopsy.

Investigators said they found proof that the couple, from New Mexico, had an 'agreement' to take their own lives.

'Through the course of the investigation, detectives obtained evidence that supported an agreement between Mr. and Mrs. Vigil to end their lives together,' the Colorado Springs Police Department shared a press release.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office ruled Stella Vigil's death as a homicide and Lee Vigil's death was ruled a suicide.

The couple was reported missing around 8.30pm on Friday after they didn’t return from a hike near Edmundson trailhead on Woodmen Road.

When relatives of the Vigils and El Paso County Search and Rescue officers arrived to the trail, they found the couple’s car.

Around 12.30am officials found the couple’s bodies off the Santa Fe trail near Fountain Creek, about a three-hour walk away from where the couple first started the hike, suffering apparent gunshots wounds.

Locals were shocked to learn of the Vigils' deaths in the hiking area frequented by couples and families, and at first there was speculation they could have been attacked.

27-year old man refused all help to save his one-year old daughter locked in hot car because he is scared the repair expenses would be much and she died

A Las Vegas dad has been charged with child abuse leading to substantial bodily harm after his one-year-old daughter was found dead in a hot car.

Sidney Deal, 27, was arrested on Monday after refusing several efforts to free his daughter, Sayah, from the hot car, where she was trapped for about an hour.

Deal was booked at the Clark County Detention Center and is being held on $20,000 bail. He didn't attend his initial hearing for medical reasons.

The Las Vegas Man told police officers on the scene that he didn't want to break the car windows of his Nissan Altima because of the potential cost to the vehicle.

His partner also called an insurance company who offered to send a tow truck, but Deal refused the request after a disagreement about the price.

Police officers offered to call a locksmith, but Deal used the opportunity to speak on the phone with his brother instead.

Deal reportedly told officers that Sayah had simply fallen asleep, and that the air conditioner in the vehicle was on.

When officers were finally able to retrieve Sayah from the car she was already dead, with police stating her body had gone into rigor mortis.

'My son was not negligent the way he handled it,' Artavia Wilson said, in regards to her son, Deal.

Reports say Deal told the police that he accidentally locked Sayah in his car after a fight with his girlfriend. The girlfriend told police he returned to her just a few minutes after leaving with Sayah.

Additionally, Deal talked on the phone with his brother, Samid, who arrived and offered to punch in a window after wrapping his shirt around his knuckle.

Deal reportedly prevented Samid from breaking the window, concerned that he wouldn't be able to afford a fix for the car, hence the murder charge.

Rep’s aide caught burgling another lawmaker’s office

Kabir Muhammed Lawal, Legislative Assistant to a member of the House of Representatives, Mustafa Saidu from Adamawa State, on Friday, was caught breaking into the office of another lawmaker from Kano State, Kabiru Idris.

Lawal, who was apprehended with the aid of a closed-circuit television camera, hails from Offa, Kwara State. Saidu is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party while Idris is a member of the All Progressives Congress.

Punch correspondent obtained a copy of the CCTV footage showing Lawal allegedly opening a shelf in the office as well as videos of his interrogation by Idris and some sergeants-at-arms.

According to eyewitnesses, Lawal had allegedly paraded himself as a journalist in the course of extorting money from unsuspecting politicians and visitors from Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

Authorities of the National Assembly were still interrogating Lawal as of 6.18pm on Friday when this report was filed.

Idris, who is Chairman of the House Committee on Civil Society Organisations and Donor Agencies, in his brief comment on the incident, stated that Lawal allegedly broke into his office after using several keys, within 15 minutes of exiting the office.

The lawmaker said, “He put off the light in my office but my cameras were on and I could see him. He used different keys. I could see from the camera; he was struggling to open the door and it was less than 15 minutes after I closed from the office. Basically, he was monitoring my movements. We have all the videos.”

Idris said he had contacted Lawal’s boss, who was expected to arrive in the National Assembly to see what his aide had allegedly done.

“It will be unfair to take any action or allow anybody to take any action without the consent of his principal. I have already invited him and he is on his way. We will tell him what happened.

“The Chairman of the Press (House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Benjamin Kalu) is with us; his office was also burgled a while ago. We have all been burgled; we don’t know what is happening.”

Idris later told journalists that the case had been handed over to the National Assembly management for further action.

Burglars had in May broken into Kalu’s office and carted away cash and items.

Kalu had lamented the spate of insecurity in and around the National Assembly Complex as burglars broke into his office.

The House spokesman said members of the National Assembly were no longer safe to carry out their legislative duties and that he was shocked to see that his office had been burgled.

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer, National Assembly Division, DSP Abdullahi Sambo, said, “See me on Monday for that.”

Lawal’s boss could not be reached as of press time on Friday as he did not pick up his mobile phone when he was called several times.

Lawal’s boss could not be reached as of press time on Friday as he did not pick up his mobile phone when he was called several times.

In January 2019, the offices of three members of the National Assembly were looted within a week. The affected lawmakers included Senator Oluremi Tinubu, representing Lagos West Senatorial District; and Mr Muhammed Gausu Boyi, representing Ringim/Taura Federal Constituency, Jigawa State.

#ENDSARS: Korede Bello breaks silence

With the on-going nationwide protests and campaign against police brutality in Nigeria, singer, mental health advocate and Nigerian Police ambassador, Korede Bello has lent his voice to the struggle.

The multiple award winning singer joins millions of Nigerian youth demanding an end to police brutality and assault of vulnerable Nigerians by the police, especially the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS).

Below is what the singer shared on Twitter;

My heart breaks for every injustice meted out to the vulnerable in society by the police either by our legacy police officers, The special anti robbery squad (SARS) or any other archetype of the tactical unit of the police force.

A critical examination of the incidents as well as information I'm privy to shows this is way beyond just the SARS unit as the campaign suggests abnitio in 2017.

It seemed like we would turn a corner with the work that led to the new laws (Police Trust Fund and Police Act 2020).

All our behind-the-scenes advocacy efforts for the institution, its members and we the people, but the reality of young people as being expressed - from tech guys to entertainment professionals shows that there is more work to be done. I am not silent & I've never been silent. I've only been speaking in spaces I'm convinced can decisively provide policy solutions to these recurring challenges. Something has to give & we must adopt & consistently implement solutions that works for our country and generations unborn.

We must not have a society where young people (and anybody for that matter) are openly expressing their discontent about their relationship with an institution as critical as the Police and we don't find solutions that work and implement them consistently.

Do not despair guys, we stay demanding and stay engaging. we cry with eyes wide open but we must also walk the path of helpful and practicable solutions.

Barcelona forced me out because of Messi – Luis Suarez

Atletico Madrid striker, Luis Suarez, has claimed that he was forced out of Barcelona, because of his relationship with Lionel Messi.

The 33-year-old left the Nou Camp after six years this summer.

During his spell with Barca, Suarez became the club’s third all-time top goal scorer with 198 goals.

“I would have looked for a solution if it was a financial problem and if it was a sporting issue I could have understood. It is not clear to me why they took the decision they took.

“I think they wanted to remove me from Messi’s side. Maybe it annoyed them that I had a good relationship with Leo. Perhaps they didn’t want him to be with me so much. I can’t find any reason to think that would damage the team, though,” Suarez told ESPN’s “90 Minutos” on Friday.

''Men with deep voice more likely to cheat''

In a revelation that should alarm anyone blessed with a baritone, Chinese researchers found that men with deeper voices are more likely to cheat on their partner. The sound-breaking study was published in the journal "Personality and Individual Differences" and approved by the Ethics Committee of Southwest University.

Indeed, while females largely find lower acoustics more arousing, masculine-sounding men are also “more likely to engage in infidelity” than “feminine men,” researchers said.

The scientists reached this conclusion by surveying an anonymous group of heterosexual, Mandarin-speaking university students — comprised of 116 men and 145 women — who were involved in brief flings.

After recording their voices to gauge their pitch, the team asked participants how likely they were to remain faithful to their partners on a scale of 1 to 7.

While they found no strong correlation between female voices and philandering, men with deeper timbres were more likely to fool around with different women, per the study. They deduced that these low-octave voices “enhance their status among other men or their attractiveness to women, thereby increasing their chances of obtaining more or higher-quality partners.”

A previous study in 2013 also found a link between pitch and promiscuity, reporting that the more women thought these men would cheat, the more they were attracted to them for a brief relationship when they are less worried about fidelity.

On a biological level, lower voices indicate higher testosterone levels, which has been shown to “interfere with romantic relationship functioning” by promoting promiscuous behavior, according to the researchers behind the new study.

By contrast, men with lower testosterone, and therefore, higher voices, tend to have higher long-term marital satisfaction and lower divorce rates, per the study.

Massive gridlock as #EndSARS protesters shutdown Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

There is massive gridlock on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as #EndSARS protesters have shutdown the expressway.

The hundreds of protesters, which had earlier caused massive gridlock in Alausa when they came to protest at the State House of Assembly marched to the expressway, blocking the Alausa section of the road.

The protesters, armed with placards barricaded the highway from the Secretariat bus-stop, opposite Magodo Phase II.

The effect of the gridlock had begun to extend to the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

On Friday, thousands of protesters stormed the State House of Assembly to demand outright disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, over series of atrocities committed by the operatives, killing and maiming innocent citizens.

The protesters blocked the road leading to the State House of Assembly, causing traffic gridlock in the area.

The protesters who thronged the Assembly chanting anti-SARS songs were later addressed by Lagos Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Hamzat.

He charged the police authority to ensure it put a stop to the incessant harassment of Nigerians by some officers of the anti-robbery squad, adding that any officer of the squad found to.have harassed innocent Nigerian should be arrested and prosecuted.

‘It’s okay to protest but I say clearly that it is wrong for any law enforcement agent to maim or criminalise another Nigerian without reasonable course. The police or the law enforcement agents must do their job. In doing that job, you cannot trample on the right of the citizens.

“You cannot say our youths, because of their looks or they are carrying computer are guilty of a crime. The police job is to arrest people and send them for prosecution if they do something wrong. That tenets must be adhered to.

“We are not against police fighting robbery but we are saying do not unjustifiably hurt our children because of their looks. Whoever is responsible should be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.

Dozens injured as 33-storey building in South Korea goes up in flames

Dozens of people were injured after a 33-storey apartment building went up in flames on Thursday night in the South Korean city of Ulsan, according to local media reports.

By early Friday morning, 88 people who had either fled the fire or been rescued had been taken to hospital, Yonhap reported, citing rescue services.

Most had low-level injuries, including from smoke inhalation.

It was not immediately clear if anyone had died in the blaze.

The fire, which is thought to have started somewhere between the 8th and the 12th floors before spreading to the upper storeys, has been brought under control.

It, however, remains unclear whether there is a risk of collapse.

Some outlets showed footage of the structure engulfed in flames and slabs of burning concrete falling to the street below.

Strong winds are thought to have caused the blaze to spread rapidly.

There have been no reports of fatalities so far.

Rescue workers from the fire brigade had tried to evacuate the apartment building’s 380 residents as quickly as possible, the report said.

Some 50 people fled to the roof of the building when the fire started.

Ulsan is a city in the south-east of the country with a population of 1.2 million people.
