45-year-old man smashes parents’ heads with pestle in Enugu

It was an unusual weekend at Mkporogwu, Iheakpu Awka, in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State as a 45-year-old man, identified as Michael Ugwuanyi, on Saturday, smashed his parents’ heads with pestle over a yet-to-be-identified matter.

It was gathered that one of the deceased and the mother of the suspect, Florence Ugwuanyi, was pounding cassava meal in the kitchen on the rainy Saturday evening when the suspect snatched the pestle from her and smashed her head.

According to the Chief Adviser on Security Matters in the community and a member of the monarch’s cabinet, Titus Ugwuoke, the suspect, sensing that his father, late Julius Ugwuanyi, would retaliate or alert the neighbourhood about his crime, seized the same pestle and also smashed his head.

Ugwuoke also said that he covered his victims’ heads with clothes and took his deceased mother’s handset to alert his relations, alleging that they ate cooked beans and were reacting to it. On hearing the development, Ugwuoke added that the deceased’s’ first son, Pius Ugwuanyi, reached him on phone at about 4 am on Sunday morning and pleaded that he should rush to their father’s house to ascertain what was amiss and administer treatment on his parents since his wife is a practising nurse.

On getting to the family of the victims with his wife, Ugwuoke said they met the suspect who informed them that his parents have gone to the hospital for treatment, adding that they angrily returned home, adding that when the first son called again, he told him that the suspect informed him to return home from Abuja immediately because their parents’ health were in critical condition.

On hearing this, Ugwuoke said, he returned to the family and conducted a thorough search in their rooms but could not find anything. He also said “I decided to arrest him with the Neighbourhood Watch personnel since he refused to disclose the name of the hospital where his parents went for treatment. It was in the midst of this apprehension and confusion that Daniel, who is a younger brother to the late Julius, went to the kitchen axis and raised the alarm.

On rushing there, we discovered the lifeless bodies of the suspect’s parents covered with clothes. I uncovered the clothes and what I saw was beyond my explanation, it was gory, to say the least. Their brain cells were splashed on the floor.”

Confirming the incident, the Spokesperson of the Enugu State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe said: “The suspect, Michael Ugwuanyi, has been arrested and the Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.”

Bill seeking legalisation of industrial hemp passes second reading

A bill seeking the legalisation and usage of industrial hemp plants for medical and scientific research is presently before the House of Representatives.

The bill, which was presented by Rep. Princess Miriam Onuoha, representing Okigwe North of Imo State, has passed the second reading.

This was disclosed by Dr Tonye Jaja Clinton, a legal practitioner, during a media parley organized by Grow Cann Africa in Abuja on the benefits and opportunities of cannabis plants and CBD oil.

This is just as experts from Canada have started pushing for the cultivation and development of non-intoxicating Cannabis, Cannabidiol, CBD oil, and industrial hemp markets in the country.

The group, Grow CANN Africa, said Nigeria is well-positioned to tap into the increasing global demand for Cannabis, CBD oil and industrial hemp markets poised to hit $10 billion in 2020. President of Grow CANN Africa, Uju Adaku, who spoke during a Zoom media parley held in Abuja, disclosed that their findings have shown that countries have gained better traction in the development of their national cannabis (CBD) and industrial hemp by granting an exclusive licence to foreign partners with the technical know-how, including access to the global market to adequately build the market.

Speaking further, Dr Tony Jaja, the legal practitioner, who developed the bill for the Cultivation, Processing and Commercialisation of Cannabis, said though the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act criminalised cannabis for medical research and commercial purpose. He said that to ensure strict regulation of the cultivation, the bill put in place criteria for licensing such that anyone applying who proves that it’s purely for research or commercial purpose, and even after the licenses are issued, it must be renewed periodically so that people do not misuse them. According to him, the bill is not to create a new agency, but NDLEA will be in charge.

Why I sold my grandson – Detained grandma

A grandmother, Anthonia Amos, who was arrested by the Police for selling her four day old grandson in Imo State, has said she traded the baby because of her anger towards her son-in-law.

Anthonia said she sold the baby because she was angry that the father of the baby did not pay her daughter’s bride price before putting her in a family way.

She made the confession while speaking with newsmen as she was being paraded by the Rivers State police command with two others who were allegedly involved in the crime.

The suspect alleged the baby’s father provided only N1000 for the hospital bills when her daughter was in labour.

“I was only trying to hide the news of the pregnancy from my family and my husband who would have blamed me for not bringing up his daughter properly. I was pushed into selling the baby to anyone who would love and care for him.

“I received N500,000 for the baby out of which I gave the nurse, Pauline Umoh N100,000 for the treatment and I intended to give my daughter N50,000 to take care of herself,” she said.

Officers at the Trans-Amadi Police station, who apprehended the woman, said the arrest of the grandmother led to the arrest of Pauline Umoh of Ukanafu LGA of Akwa-Ibom state and Juliet Obianwa of Mgbidi in Imo state who bought the baby.

Juliet Obianwa narrated that she was told that the baby is from an Orphanage Home and she was asked to pay one million naira to regularize the adoption processes.

“I was looking for a baby boy to adopt that was what led me to the incident,” Juliet said.

Elderly couple found dead by each other are said to have agreed to commit suicide as police finds evidence

An elderly couple found dead suffering gunshot wounds near a hiking trail in Colorado died in a 'suicide pact', it has been revealed.

Leroy 'Lee' Vigil, 73, shot his wife Stella Vigil, 72, before turning the gun on himself on Friday after they went on a hike in Colorado Springs, according to the autopsy.

Investigators said they found proof that the couple, from New Mexico, had an 'agreement' to take their own lives.

'Through the course of the investigation, detectives obtained evidence that supported an agreement between Mr. and Mrs. Vigil to end their lives together,' the Colorado Springs Police Department shared a press release.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office ruled Stella Vigil's death as a homicide and Lee Vigil's death was ruled a suicide.

The couple was reported missing around 8.30pm on Friday after they didn’t return from a hike near Edmundson trailhead on Woodmen Road.

When relatives of the Vigils and El Paso County Search and Rescue officers arrived to the trail, they found the couple’s car.

Around 12.30am officials found the couple’s bodies off the Santa Fe trail near Fountain Creek, about a three-hour walk away from where the couple first started the hike, suffering apparent gunshots wounds.

Locals were shocked to learn of the Vigils' deaths in the hiking area frequented by couples and families, and at first there was speculation they could have been attacked.

27-year old man refused all help to save his one-year old daughter locked in hot car because he is scared the repair expenses would be much and she died

A Las Vegas dad has been charged with child abuse leading to substantial bodily harm after his one-year-old daughter was found dead in a hot car.

Sidney Deal, 27, was arrested on Monday after refusing several efforts to free his daughter, Sayah, from the hot car, where she was trapped for about an hour.

Deal was booked at the Clark County Detention Center and is being held on $20,000 bail. He didn't attend his initial hearing for medical reasons.

The Las Vegas Man told police officers on the scene that he didn't want to break the car windows of his Nissan Altima because of the potential cost to the vehicle.

His partner also called an insurance company who offered to send a tow truck, but Deal refused the request after a disagreement about the price.

Police officers offered to call a locksmith, but Deal used the opportunity to speak on the phone with his brother instead.

Deal reportedly told officers that Sayah had simply fallen asleep, and that the air conditioner in the vehicle was on.

When officers were finally able to retrieve Sayah from the car she was already dead, with police stating her body had gone into rigor mortis.

'My son was not negligent the way he handled it,' Artavia Wilson said, in regards to her son, Deal.

Reports say Deal told the police that he accidentally locked Sayah in his car after a fight with his girlfriend. The girlfriend told police he returned to her just a few minutes after leaving with Sayah.

Additionally, Deal talked on the phone with his brother, Samid, who arrived and offered to punch in a window after wrapping his shirt around his knuckle.

Deal reportedly prevented Samid from breaking the window, concerned that he wouldn't be able to afford a fix for the car, hence the murder charge.

Rep’s aide caught burgling another lawmaker’s office

Kabir Muhammed Lawal, Legislative Assistant to a member of the House of Representatives, Mustafa Saidu from Adamawa State, on Friday, was caught breaking into the office of another lawmaker from Kano State, Kabiru Idris.

Lawal, who was apprehended with the aid of a closed-circuit television camera, hails from Offa, Kwara State. Saidu is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party while Idris is a member of the All Progressives Congress.

Punch correspondent obtained a copy of the CCTV footage showing Lawal allegedly opening a shelf in the office as well as videos of his interrogation by Idris and some sergeants-at-arms.

According to eyewitnesses, Lawal had allegedly paraded himself as a journalist in the course of extorting money from unsuspecting politicians and visitors from Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

Authorities of the National Assembly were still interrogating Lawal as of 6.18pm on Friday when this report was filed.

Idris, who is Chairman of the House Committee on Civil Society Organisations and Donor Agencies, in his brief comment on the incident, stated that Lawal allegedly broke into his office after using several keys, within 15 minutes of exiting the office.

The lawmaker said, “He put off the light in my office but my cameras were on and I could see him. He used different keys. I could see from the camera; he was struggling to open the door and it was less than 15 minutes after I closed from the office. Basically, he was monitoring my movements. We have all the videos.”

Idris said he had contacted Lawal’s boss, who was expected to arrive in the National Assembly to see what his aide had allegedly done.

“It will be unfair to take any action or allow anybody to take any action without the consent of his principal. I have already invited him and he is on his way. We will tell him what happened.

“The Chairman of the Press (House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Benjamin Kalu) is with us; his office was also burgled a while ago. We have all been burgled; we don’t know what is happening.”

Idris later told journalists that the case had been handed over to the National Assembly management for further action.

Burglars had in May broken into Kalu’s office and carted away cash and items.

Kalu had lamented the spate of insecurity in and around the National Assembly Complex as burglars broke into his office.

The House spokesman said members of the National Assembly were no longer safe to carry out their legislative duties and that he was shocked to see that his office had been burgled.

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer, National Assembly Division, DSP Abdullahi Sambo, said, “See me on Monday for that.”

Lawal’s boss could not be reached as of press time on Friday as he did not pick up his mobile phone when he was called several times.
