Panic as 30 suspects escape SARS detention facility in Lagos

Pandemonium erupted on Wednesday at the disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) office of the Lagos State Police Command when 30 out of the 250 detainees broke out of their cells and escaped.

This was contrary to claims by the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, that the command had transferred all suspects to the detention facility of the State Criminal and Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, Thisdaylive.com reports.

The CP had on Wednesday night through the Police Spokesman, SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement that suspects in all tactical squads under the command had been transferred to Panti.

But earlier that day, escaped suspects, who were arrested on grounds of armed robbery, kidnapping and murder, were said to have lured the station officer (SO) on duty to open the overcrowded facility.

The suspects were screaming at the top of their voices that they were in danger, and this lured the SO to open their cell and he was quickly overpowered by the detainees, who badly manhandled him.

THISDAY gathered that there was inadequate number of policemen at the squad complex to nab the escaping suspects because the former SARS operatives were on standby, waiting for instructions concerning their deployment.

With their withdrawal from duty, few mobile policemen were deployed to SARS building at the command to watch over the detention facility.

Having trooped out of their cells, some of the detainees invaded different offices and escaped with laptops and even some weapons like machetes recovered as exhibits, which they used to attack the few mobile policemen that tried to stop them.

Though the mobile policemen opened fire into the air to stop them in their tracks, about 30 of them escaped while the others were successfully rounded up.

Explaining why the compact SARS facility had such number of detainees, a police source blamed it on the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to him, because of the pandemic, the correctional centres in Lagos refused to accept new inmates over fear of spread.

The correctional centres were said to have insisted that the police take them for COVID-19 test before they can be admitted into the detention facility of the centre.

Given that the cost of the COVID-19 test would be borne by the command, the police opted to get a remand order and detain the suspects in SARS cell.

But debunking the allegation that the suspects escaped, the spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Muyiwa Adejobi said the information was mischievous and false.

He said: “The attention of the Lagos State Command has been drawn to a rumour making waves on the social media that some suspects of the disbanded SARS escaped from the cell at the Command Headquarters, Ikeja, Lagos State on Wednesday.

“The command perceives such rumour as unfounded, mischievous and baseless. It is an attempt to cause fear and panic in the minds of Lagosians, and distracting the command.

“In line with the directive of the IG, SCIID, has taken over the disbanded SARS and other tactical units’ buildings in Ikeja and other satellite offices across the state, including the suspects.

“It’s pertinent to state that some of the suspects, who have been convicted, have undergone COVID-19 test which is a prerequisite to accepting them into correctional centres; but the command awaits their results before further actions.

“The suspects in all the cases handled by the disbanded SARS are intact. The DCP Yetunde Longe, has temporarily relocated to the disbanded SARS building at Ikeja for thorough supervision and accountability of the taking over process.

“The command therefore urges the general public to regard the news as a rumour, baseless and mischievous to suit the intention of the originator(s) as the command is committed to reforming the policing system and providing adequate security for all in the state.”

Wealthy Argentine businessman shoots his wife dead then kills himself in murder-suicide

A businessman in Argentina killed the mother of his three children before he shot himself dead in a murder-suicide inside the couple's country club home, authorities say.

Police visited the home following reports of gun shots and found the bodies of Jorge Neuss, 73, and Silvia Saravia, 69, in their bedroom.

Saravia had already died by the time cops had entered the exclusive home at the Martindale Country Club in Pilar, Buenos Aires. Neuss was still alive when paramedics arrived at the home and subsequently rushed to Austral de Pilar Hospital.

He was declared dead upon arriving at the medical facility.

Investigators have ruled it a 'murder-suicide'.

Investigators at first thought the tragic incident was part of a suicide pact by the couple before an autopsy report released Monday revealed that Saravia tried to fend of her husband.

The medical examiner's report showed that Saravia had bruises on her hands and the left side of her body. Neuss, a successful businessman, also had bruises on his hands and forearms.

According to Noticias Argentinas, Neuss was found in a dressing room next to the bathroom looking at Saravia with what appeared to be a single shot to the right temple.

Neuss used the same .357-caliber magnum to fire a single bullet at his wife, shooting her behind the left ear. The bullet was lodged in her arm.

The shooting was reported to the authorities by two female residence employees. The attempted to enter the bedroom, but it was locked.

The couple's son Juan Neuss, who lived at a property on the country club grounds, rushed to the home and managed to open the door before discovering his parents.

The distraught son told local news outlets that his parents didn't have any problems and never fought, but that they were saddened by the recent news that he had been diagnosed with cancer.

An official closed to the investigation told Argentina state news agency Teleam that 'the autopsy and what was seen at the scene make us think that Neuss surprised his wife when she went to the bathroom, fought [with her], dominated her by grabbing her hair, murdered her and then shot himself in the head.'

The family conglomerate dates back to 1881 when Jorge Neuss's father founded Soda Neuss Belgrano, a soft drink beverage and dominated the Argentine beverage industry.

Neuss also led several energy and finance companies in the public sector, including Neuss Capital, which played a role in start-up companies.

[The pink dolphins are BACK] Dolphins in Hong Kong enjoy rare quiet as pandemic halts ferries

Rare pink dolphins are returning to the waters between Hong Kong and Macau after the coronavirus pandemic halted ferries, but scientists remain deeply concerned about their long-term survival in one of the world's busiest sea lanes.

The tell-tale flash of pink leaping from the waters alerts Naomi Brennan to the presence of a local Chinese white dolphin.

Conservationists like Brennan regularly board boats in the Pearl River Delta to document how the mammals, known for their eye-catching pink colouring, are faring.

"Today we encountered three different groups of dolphins -- six adults and two sub-adults," she explained.

"They were engaging in a range of behaviour, from feeding to travelling and socialising."

For years keeping tabs on the dolphins has been a disheartening task.

The population has fallen by 70-80 percent in the past 15 years in what is one of the world's most industrialised estuaries.

But this year their numbers have bounced back -- and they have the pandemic to thank.

Well I am sharing this because some of you might not have seen a pink dolphin before. That's the bottomline of this post, lol.

United Nations condemns plans to castrate r.a.p.i.s.t.s and execute paedophiles in Nigeria

The UN has condemned plans to castrate rapists and paedophiles in Nigeria and called the measures 'draconian'.

In September, the governor of Kaduna state signed a law saying men convicted of r.a.pe would be subjected to surgical castration - with those found guilty of r.a.ping a child under the age of 14 facing the death penalty.

The measures followed public anger over a recent increase of r.a.pes.

The UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet condemned the plans, calling them 'draconian'.

'Tempting as it may be to impose draconian punishments on those who carry out such monstrous acts, we must not allow ourselves to commit further violations,' she said.

In a statement regarding the adoption of the law in Nigeria, Bachelet said the main argument made for instituting the death penalty is to deter rape. She added that the assumption that the punishment prevents sexual assaults is wrong.

She said 'the certainty of punishment, rather than its severity, deters crime'.

'Penalties like surgical castration and bilateral salpingectomy will not resolve any of the barriers to accessing justice, nor will it serve a preventive role,' Bachelet argued.

'Surgical castration and salpingectomy violate the absolute prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment under international human rights law.'

Reported cases of r.a.pe in Nigeria rose during the months of coronavirus restrictions.

Women's groups have called for tougher action against rapists, including the death penalty.

Smuggler caught with £46k worth of gold in his bum after customs spotted him walking in an odd manner

A smuggler was caught with 2lb of gold worth £46,000 in his bottom after customs officers spotted his unusual walk at an airport in India.

The man was travelling on a GoAir flight from Dubai into Kerala's Kannur airport and had hidden the stash of gold inside his own body to avoid paying the 18 per cent tax.

It is believed he had been walking awkwardly and was stopped and checked and the the gold was discovered by officials from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), who also shared images of the precious metal which had been recovered.

Police said another man on the same flight was stopped from trafficking 3.2lb (1.47kg) of gold into India.

However, they did not reveal how he concealed the precious metal.

They were the latest in a number of seizures of gold being smuggled into the country from Arabic states.

17-year old Indian girl who ran away from home because of her father's abuse, is kidnapped and r.a.p.e.d for 22 days on a farm land

A 17-year-old girl was kidnapped and repeatedly gang-r.a.ped over a 22-day period on a farm in India.

The girl, who had run away from home after an argument with her parents last month, was waiting for a bus in the eastern city of Cuttack to return to her family when a man offered her a lift home on his motorbike.

Instead of taking her home Santosh Behera drove her to a poultry farm in a remote village, where he locked her in a room and the abuse began.

The girl was shut away for 22 days and r.a.ped repeatedly by two men.

The suspect allegedly filmed himself and his friend assaulting the teenager and threatened to post the video on social media or kill her if she tried to escape.

She was eventually rescued by police who were tipped off by locals who suspected illegal activity at the property.

A police official said that one of the men was arrested but the second remains at large, adding that a manhunt has been launched to catch him.

The 17-year-old, who is said to be in a poor physical state and psychologically scarred, was sent to an orphanage after meeting with social services.

The girl had initially run away from home to live with her sister in Cuttack, unable to bear her father's abuse, Hindustan Times reports. It was her brother-in-law who decided to send her home.

Twitter explains worldwide glitch

Twitter Inc explained Thursday why users of its social networking site experienced a glitch in many parts of the world.

It attributed the glitch to an inadvertent change it had made to its internal systems.

Many users could not send tweets, while the glitch lasted.

However, the platform returned to normal after about an hour and half of outage.

The company said that the site should be working for everyone within the next few hours and that it did not have any evidence of a security breach or a hack.

Outage tracking website Downdetector.com showed more than 55,000 users were facing issues with Twitter.

In July, Twitter had reported a breach where hackers accessed its internal systems to hijack some of the platform’s top voices.

Among those affected were U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden and reality TV star Kim Kardashian.

The hackers used the accounts to solicit digital currency.

End SARS: Nigerian govt blames ASUU strike for civil unrest

The Federal Government has blamed the ongoing civil unrest by youths across the country on the industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) in the country.

Sen. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, said this in a reconciliation meeting between the Federal Government and ASUU on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Ngige, “for the past one week, we have all been on our toes, we’ve been meeting, and we pray that this meeting will yield good fruits.

“We don’t take pleasure in the fact that the children who are supposed to be in school are being recruited into the EndSARS, #EndStrike, #EndSWAT campaign.

“As much as possible, we’ll try to see how we can meet ourselves halfway so that we can resolve this crisis to the benefits of all and the country at large.”

The minister said that the Federal Government has commenced the process of testing the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) platform, created by ASUU.

He said that ASUU members have claimed that the platform will accommodate the peculiarities of the university systems and that the platform will involve three stages of the test to be concluded within the time frame the union gave the government.

“We have the preliminary report, and the test run on the UTAS, and we believe that with that, we will be able to get it right.

“Let me make it clear to members of the press. We never said UTAS would replace the Integrated Personnel Information System (IPPIS) as some of you are reporting.

“No! The UTAS developed by them is for the University systems, and they feel that it captures the peculiarities that are configured to accommodate all the University systems, especially as it affects the Professors and other teaching staff and even the Non-Academic Staff.

“We, as a government, feel we are going to put it up for tests – three stages of the test. We’ve done the first stage of the test, which is within the timeline of six months that ASUU promised.

“We are going to do another integrity test, Alpha test, Beta test and the one they call roll-over and other whatever test. It’s the technologists that know all those tests. But this is the round we are going on now,” he said.

#EndSARS protesters chase Yele Sowore out of protest in Abuja [Video]

Convener, #RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore was on Thursday embarrassed and disgraced #EndSARS protesters out of Abuja protest ground.

There was drama when the Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate, was reportedly sent home by #EndSars protesters.

In a viral online video, Sowore was being pushed and told to leave the protest ground as he wasn’t needed there.

His attempt to beg and explain himself was rebuffed by the #EndSARS protesters who didn’t want to hear anything from him but rather, were bent on him leaving the protest ground.

Reports have it that Sowore was sent away because the protesters did not want it to be infiltrated by any political view.

The protesters, however, advised him to show his support on social media and not in person.

Meanwhile, Sowore had recently said on his twitter handle that he would not be part of negotiations regarding #EndSARS, as some people were using it as a game to make money while noting that the only negotiation he would ever engage in was that of the surrender of the oppressors through #RevolutionNow.

See the video of Sowore’s disgrace making round online below.

A woman abandoned her little girl with the medical team at the Abuja protest today and disappeared. The team was finally able to reach her by phone so she can come pick up her “missing” girl. She said she will pick up her daughter tomorrow. Strangers can keep her for the night.

Update: She finally came to pick up the baby after they swore for her. Because that is a weyrey behaviour. This woman left that girl for hours. I was there when she was first picked and she was with the medical team for hours. They were even using the ambulance to make announcements.
