British Airways boss urges UK to end 14-day quarantine

New British Airways chief executive Sean Doyle has urged the UK government to end the quarantining of passengers arriving from abroad amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“We need to get the economy moving again and this just isn’t possible when you’re asking people to quarantine for 14 days,” Doyle told an online aviation conference, a week after he replaced Alex Cruz as the CEO of British Airways.

“If we look abroad to our near neighbours, we see that business travel and indeed tourism is being prioritised by some countries,” Doyle added.

Addressing the same event, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the government was looking at introducing a virus test alongside a shortened quarantine period.

“My ministerial colleagues and I have agreed a regime, based on a single test provided by the private sector and at the cost to the passenger, after a period of self-isolation.”

He added, “It will mean a single test for international arrivals, a week after arrival.”

Doyle is not convinced however, telling the conference, “It’s our view that even if that quarantine period is reduced to seven days, people won’t travel here and the UK will get left behind.”

After Wizkid blasted Reekado Banks, the singer has now unfollowed him on Instagram in a form of protest.

Recall Wizkid had blasted his colleague for announcing a release of their collabo in the midst of the #ENDSARS protests.

Reekado had tweeted about the song and tagged wizkid before the singer asked him to delete it and called him a fool.

“Delete this dude ! Can’t believe you’re even doing this at a time like this. Old song ! #endsars fool!”, wizkid replied to being tag on the post.

Hoodlums attack, injure RRS operatives in Lagos [Video]

Hoodlums disguising as #ENDSARS protesters have attacked operatives of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS), injuring about 14.

The attack occurred today at Ebute Meta while the operatives were being moved to relieve their colleagues who have been on duty since Sunday.

Armed with sticks and stones the hoodlums in their hundreds barricaded the RRS truck, pelting the operatives with stones.

It was gathered they overpowered the two armed policemen escorting the truck, descended on the officers, and left them with varying degrees of injuries.

Already, some of the injured have been moved to the Police Clinic Ikeja and others were taken to the General Hospital for medical attention.

Thugs also attacked RRS operatives at LASU on Monday morning, forcing their vehicle to detour.

Condemning the attacks on policemen, Lagos Police spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, noted some of the protesters have exhibited violent traits and disdain for the police, urging them to desist from the needless provocation of operatives.

He lamented many policemen have been injured in Adekunle area of Yaba, adding that many of those protesting were too aggressive and do not want to see the police around them.

He appealed to the protesters to get organised and have a structure so they can easily communicate the reason(s) of the protests to supporters to avoid misrepresentation and anarchy.

#EndSARS: SARS operatives extorted me twice — Oyo deputy governor

Rauf Olaniyan, the deputy governor of Oyo State, has revealed how some operatives of the recently proscribed Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) extorted money from him in various currencies including naira, dollars and pounds in Lagos.

Mr Olaniyan had last week declared his support for EndSARS protesters.

The deputy governor, while addressing the protesters last week, said that he was a victim of police brutality twice.

Mr Olaniyan, who spoke at the weekend, recounted how the special unit of the police collected money from him without being found guilty of any offence.

He said that on a particular occasion, while he was rushing to catch a flight, SARS operatives took all the monies he had on him (both local and foreign) and that even an appeal to them to spare him some to use when he gets to his destination fell on deaf ears.

He added that only reforms of the police will help address all the anomalies in the system.

“I was a victim twice, once at Ikeja roundabout and at Ojota ramp when you want to negotiate around Ikorodu road to the express.

“Ask my driver. We were ransacked there. What only saved me was the fact that I had some money with me. I had to part with over N100,000. It was terrible.

“That of Ikeja, they took pounds sterlings, they took dollar notes, all the money I had because I was travelling. I was eager to go and catch my flight, they emptied me.

EFCC confirms attacks on website

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that there were attempts to breach its website.

Anonymous, a legion of hackers, had claimed responsibility for hitting the agency’s internet platform.

The group also tempered with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) website and threatened to target more.

The anonymous group say their actions are in support of the EndSARS protests in the country.

EFCC, however, assured that its website was not hacked.

On Monday, Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC Head of Media, noted that the compromise efforts were recorded over the weekend.

The spokesman blamed “cybercriminals” for a near breach of its privacy.

Uwujaren said the attempts were successfully repelled and that the website “is up and running”.

Catholic Bishops back youths, reiterate restructuring of Nigeria

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has backed the ongoing nationwide protests by Nigerians, especially the youths, who are calling for an end to police brutality and extra-judicial killings in the country.

The CBCN President and Archbishop of Benin-City, Most Rev Augustine Obiora Akubeze, said this in a statement signed by the National Director of Communications, Padre Mike Umoh.

The CBCN President noted that the widespread protest calling for an end to SARS is not only remarkable but commendable, more so that it is being led by the Nigerian youths.

“It is an indication that the youths are tired of suffering from the brutality and injustices perpetrated by SARS operatives and Nigeria Police Force in general. The youths are therefore simply calling for justice not just for themselves, but for the entire nation so that Nigeria can have peace,” Akubeze said.

The Archbishop of Benin-City also said that whereas the Federal Government keeps asking for peace and calm in the face of every crisis, the present agitation shows that the Nigerian youths have run out of patience and are tired of the lip-service paid by the government of the day towards a just and peaceful society.

While reiterating the need for the restructuring of the country, the Archbishop said, “We unequivocally add our voice to those of our youths and that of every well-meaning Nigerian to condemn the excesses and the horrible operations of this Police unit and the bad omen they portend to our democracy.”

Akubeze also called for a complete reform of the Police Force where Officers are paid a just wage and their welfare catered for, as well as their barracks put in order, so that they can have a decent life with their families.

He, therefore, called for the prosecution of all those who embezzled monies due to officers in the past and an effort to ensure that such loots recovered are directed to those whom they were meant for.

He said, “We reiterate that restructuring this country is a desirable path to be towed given the various developments in this nation. The knee jerk reaction of the administration by abolishing the SARS and setting up the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team portrays either the absence of an understanding of the entire problem or a lack of sincerity to address the problem.

“The Nigerian Government must realise that what the youths, on behalf of Nigerians, clamour for under the code name #EndSARS is a total reform of the entire Police Force and note a change of name; they call for a reform of all our government institutions and a reform of the entire nation. They are asking for a system that will be hard on crimes and criminals in the society within the ambiance of the law, while at the same time treating every human being, citizens and visitors alike, with respect and dignity.”

NIS to go after foreigners who refuse to be registered

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has said it would go after migrants who refuse to get themselves registered in its ongoing electronic re-registration exercise.

It vowed to evoke the immigration laws on any foreign national arrested for refusing to be captured at the end of the exercise.

President Mohammadu Buhari had, in July 2019, declared six months amnesty to migrants who had stayed in Nigeria beyond 90 days without resident permit.

The Comptroller in charge of the Lagos State Command of the Service, Ahmed Aliyu, while reiterating the stance of the service on the e-registration exercise disclosed that until September 2020, the command had successfully registered over 22,000 migrants in the state.

Cardi B quits Twitter as she's 'tired of people' trolling her for taking back Offset

Cardi B has quit her Twitter account after growing sick of people trolling her for taking back Offset.

The Bodak Yellow rapper's account @iamcardib has gone down, and she explained on an Instagram live that she's "tired of people" trying to tell her what to do and who to be with.

Cardi, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, filed for divorce from Offset back in September but announced earlier this month that they have reunited.

They have been married since 2017 and share two-year-old daughter Kulture.

Cardi, 28, said on Instagram: "A whole bunch of 15-year-olds telling me how to live my life like I'm motherf***kn' Ariana Grande or something like I came from Disney or something.

"I'm so tired of people saying I've got to continuously explain myself.

"I didn't put my divorce out there, a f***ing court clerk put it out there and because people are making rumors up, 'Oh, this guy has a girl pregnant.' I got to address it…"

She said Offset had also been trolled as she asked people to leave her man alone.

Cardi continued: "Then you guys want to be harassing this n***a. Bro, if I work things out, why you going to this n***a’s Twitter to harass him? That don't make no f***ing sense.

"I smoke a cigarette, 'Oh my God you smoking a cigarette because of Offset, you’re stressed.' Bro, when I was a stripper I used to smoke cigarettes everyday, I been smoking cigarettes since I was 15."

She continued: "I be doing the same s**t that the other people f***ing do but then y'all want to call yourself fans, I don’t give a f**k. I'm tired of it.

"Y'all really sat on Twitter and started harassing my best friend Ashanti… ain't nobody gotta do s**t.

"I do whatever the f**k I want to do.

"I love my fans and I'm grateful and thankful for what you do but some of y'all really be acting like I be sleeping with y'all."

Grieving family unable to pay for burial 'left with body on floor' as coffin confiscated

A grieving family who were unable to pay for their young son's burial were "left with his body on the floor" after funeral directors allegedly confiscated the coffin.

They couldn't afford the £120 bill - and the teenager's body was reportedly left in a garage where the wake was taking place, still surrounded by flowers and incense candles.

The funeral only went ahead after mourners took to social media to ask for financial donations towards the burial.

The incident happened in the town of Tehuacan in the Mexican state of Puebla.

The teen, 19, died from natural causes and the funeral bill came to 3,500 Mexican pesos - about £120.

Spanish newspapers say when the family couldn't come up with all of the money, the funeral home gatecrashed the wake at their home and took away the coffin - after removing the corpse and putting it on the concrete floor.

The family had managed to hand over about 900 pesos but this was refused by the funeral home which wanted payment in full.

Posting an appeal on twitter, his friends said: "This family needs help to give a healthy burial to the body.

"It should be noted that the family is poor and did not have money to pay for the funeral service."

They asked for money to be left with the family and not at the funeral home and gave their address and phone numbers.

Donations flooded in and they were able to buy a new coffin and allow the funeral to go ahead.

The local council also helped by providing a place in the cemetery free of charge.

30-year-old man kills himself for failing to raise loan payment

A 30-year-old man from Navakholo in Kakamega County, Kenya committed suicide on Saturday over financial stress, his family claims.

Solomon Ayindi Kataka’s body was found hanging from a rope tied to the roof of his house in Eshambitsi Village.

The deceased’s family told K24 Digital that Kataka, a bicycle repairer, had recently borrowed Ksh13,000 from a local microfinance bank, and the lender was on his case to settle the loan.

The deceased’s mother, Alice Omwenje Kataka, said her son had paid a part of the loan, and that he was being harassed by the microfinance bank to offset the balance.

“My son had hit rock bottom financially, and the lender was pestering him to clear his loan. Out of frustration, I suspect, he decided to end his own life,” said Alice.

Solomon’s uncle, Japheth Kataka Makokha, said the deceased’s house will be brought down in compliance with Luhya traditions, which demand that a suicide victim’s structure in the homestead be demolished.

“Persons who kill themselves should not even be taken to the mortuary; they should be buried immediately at a spot near the suicide scene,” said Makokha.

Solomon’s body was taken to Kakamega County Referral Hospital morgue.

Policeman shot dead ‘by fellow officer’ while rescuing suspect

A middle-aged policeman from Busia County, Kenya was shot dead on Friday night  by his fellow cop in unclear circumstances.

Police Constable Francis Kalewa was shot in the right side of his back, and the bullet exited through the chest.

The incident happened at Bukesa Village in Burumba Location, Busia County a few minutes to 10pm.

At 9:40pm, village elder Pamela Atieno had reported to a local police station that residents were on the verge of lynching a 26-year-old man accused of stealing motorcycle parts from boda boda operators in the neighbourhood.

Constables Kalewa and Wycliffe Kibet Kaptila and corporal John Kipkemoi Kenduiwo rushed to the scene to rescue the suspect identified as Samson Peter.

As the three cops were bundling Peter into a waiting police vehicle, the irate residents began stoning the policemen with the intention of grabbing the suspect from their custody.

“The officers were forced to fire in the air to scare the rowdy mob,” says a police report filed at the Busia Police Station on Friday night under the OB Number 91/16/10/2020.

“As they (police officers) were approaching the station, it was noted that Constable Francis Kalewa was bleeding. He was taken to the Busia County Referral Hospital, where it was established that Kalewa had sustained a gunshot [injury] in the right side of his back,” adds the report.

Kalewa, however, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment Friday night, police say.

Preliminary investigations indicated that corporal Kenduiwo had fired three bullets from his AK-47 rifle of serial number 5526173, while the Late Kalewa had fired two rounds of ammunition from his AK-47 rifle of serial number 5520341. Both officers were issued with the bullets earlier Friday, records show.

Busia Sub-County Criminal Investigation Officer (SCIO) has taken up the matter, and a probe into the circumstances leading to Kalewa’s fatal shooting launched.

Corporal John Kipkemoi Kenduiwo has been arrested, police say.

Kalewa’s body was taken to Tanaka Nursing Home morgue for autopsy.

Pastor strips n.a.k.e.d, attempts suicide after being caught with stolen cows

Police in Lurambi, Kakamega County, Kenya have arrested a 35-year-old preacher accused of stealing his neighbour’s two cows.

Joash Wanyonyi, a resident of Sichirayi Village in Shieywe Location, was on Friday, October 16, caught with the stolen cows inside a forest near his home.

Sichirayi residents, led by Village Elder Samwel Luvembe, said Wanyonyi stripped naked and tied a rope to a tree, while saying he wanted to commit suicide because he had broken one of the Ten Biblical Commandments, which frowns upon stealing.

Wanyonyi said he stole the cows so that he could take them as dowry to his wife’s home.

The owners of the domestic animals, Thomas Namayi Ambunya and Laban Andugu Mbayaji, said they woke up Friday and found their cows missing.

The two embarked on searching for the stolen animals in the nearby Bushiri Market.

“Later Friday morning, a neighbour called and informed me that the animals had been found tied in Sichirayi Forest, and that a local preacher had confessed to making away with the animals,” said Namayi.

Shieywe Location Chief Philip Chunge confirmed the incident, saying Wanyonyi wasbusted by neighbours.

Man dangles from 98-storey Trump Tower by rope 'demanding to speak to US President'

A man is dangling from Chicago's Trump International Hotel and Tower by a rope.

He is said to be threatening suicide if he is not able to speak to US President Donald Trump and the media, according to local press.

The man, described as being of Asian ethnicity, is reported to be armed with a knife and prepared to cut through the rope if his demands are not met.

He is dangling from the 16th floor balcony of the 98-storey building, with a witness saying he has been there since around 6pm - with Chicago six hours behind the UK.

A SWAT team and Marine Unit are understood to be at the scene, with police on the balcony above the man.

Photos and video footage show the man hanging in an abseiling position in line with the word 'Trump' in the building name.

An eyewitness, aged 29, told the Mirror Online: "A man is currently hanging off the side of the tower.

"There are police on top of the tower and in boats on the river. Not sure how he got up there but has been there over an hour.

"There are some reports saying he is threatening suicide if he doesn’t speak to POTUS."

Oshoala celebrates first goal of season with #EndSARS fist

Super Falcons captain Asisat Oshoala celebrated her first goal in the 2020-21 Spanish Primera Iberdrola campaign with a fist showing her support for the ongoing #EndSARS protests in Nigeria.

The Barcelona attacker opened scoring this season against Sporting Huelva.

Just five minutes into the game, Oshoala broke the deadlock.

The game ended 6-0 in favour of Barcelona.

After scoring, Oshoala raised her right hand, bent her fingers towards the palm, and held them tightly.

She subsequently tweeted the picture, indicating her support for the #EndSARS campaign.

The reigning African Women’s Player of the Year was replaced in the 68th minute.

“You already know the vibes, #EndSARS #EndPoliceBrutalityInNigeria #3pts @FCBfemeni,” she tweeted after the match.

On Saturday, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen offered support to protesters against police brutality in Nigeria after he scored his first Serie A goal of the season in Napoli’s 4-1 thumping of Atalanta on Saturday.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Lagos, Oyo, Abuja, and other states in the country over the past week to protest against police brutality.

Osimhen, who had fired blanks in his first two league games, scored in the 43rd minute after a brace from Hirving Lozano and a strike from Matteo Politano to put Napoli into a four-goal lead before the break.

After scoring the goal, Osimhen held up a shirt with the inscription “#End Police Brutality in Nigeria” to celebrate his goal.

The 21-year-old also tweeted after the game, “Having accomplished all I thought was impossible for me through GOD, now I know better, time for some limitless goals and desire. GOD is the greatest. We move.”

DStv, GOtv undergoing upgrade, not hacked – Official

MultiChoice says claims circulating on social media that its entertainment platforms – DStv and GOtv- have been hacked was not true.

A representative of the company who pleaded anonymity told The Punch on Sunday.

It was gathered that the Pay-TV company was upgrading its system and had informed its subscribers via text messages last week.

The company told its subscribers that its services would be offline as it would be upgrading its system from 11pm on October 17 to 4pm on October 19, 2020.

The representative said all the stations were made available in order not to deny subscribers access to its services as its payment and self-service platforms would be inaccessible during the period of the upgrade.
