Forget the remaining N90m for my palace's renovation, Soun of Ogbomosho tells Makinde

Oba Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III, the Soun of Ogbomosho land has rejected a gift of N90m extended to him by Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde for the renovation of his palace.

The monarch’s palace was vandalized by hoodlums after police shot dead one during #EndSARS protest in the town.

In a letter dated October 19, 2020 addressed to Governor Makinde, the monarch politely turned down the gift.

Makinde had pledged a donation of N100m for the repairs of the vandalized palace.

According to the monarch, the damages incurred during the unfortunate incident would be taken care of by a coordinated community effort of Ogbomoso sons and daughters.

Oba Oyewumi further stated that a N10m released by the Governor would be added to the contributions of his subjects.

Part of the letter read, “allow me to use this medium to express the appreciation of my people and myself for the kind gesture by Your Excellency in pledging the sum of N100m for the cost of the repairs and renovation of the Palace from the damages of the attack and an immediate disbursement of the sum of N10m”.

“However, subsequent to your visit, and in a gesture truly representative of the good and peace-loving people of Ogbomoso, a coordinated community of Ogbomoso sons and daughters have also taken up the responsibility for the repairs and renovation of their Palace and the repair and renovation work has commenced.”

“In consequence of this development, and the assessment done, there is no need to disburse the balance of the sum of N90m.

“May I reiterate my advice during your visit that avenues and opportunities to engage our teeming youth who are largely unemployed or underemployed be assiduously explored to keep them meaningfully engaged and not idle. I have no doubt in my mind that under your able leadership this will be done.

“With respect to the misguided ones who violated the sacred sanctity of Aafin Ogbomoso, as the father of all, they are forgiven for their mistake and misdeed in the knowledge that they have retraced their steps and mended their ways for the future and will no longer allow themselves to be misguided”.

“Once again, my sincere thanks to you for your support and interest in upholding the traditional institution of Oyo State and by extension Yorubaland.

“May God grant you wisdom and success as you steer the affairs of Oyo State”.

Lekki shooting: My enquiry indicates Sanwo-Olu didn’t invite Army – Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has said his enquiry so far indicated that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu did not invite the army to shoot at #EndSARS protesters in Lekki.

Soyinka, who condemned the shooting of the protesters in Lekki said the governor did not also complain of a breakdown of law and order in the State.

He said the centre has chosen to act in an authoritarian manner and has inflicted a near incurable wound on the community psyche.

In his words: “It is absolutely essential to let this government know that the Army has now replaced SARS in the demonic album of the protesters.

“My enquiry so far indicates that the Lagos governor did not invite in the Army, did not complain of a ‘breakdown in law and order’.  Nevertheless the Centre has chosen to act in an authoritarian manner and has inflicted a near incurable wound on the community psyche.”

However, Soyinka asked State Governors where the Federal Government has deployed military to quell protests to demand their withdrawals now to avoid further escalation of crisis.

“At that earlier mention Lagos sector, Lekki, where most of the affirmative action gatherings had taken place, soldiers opened fire on unarmed demonstrators, killing and wounding  a yet undetermined number. One such extra-judicial killing has drenched the Nigerian flag in the blood of innocents – and not symbolically.

“The video has, in accustomed parlance, ‘gone viral’. I have spoken by phone to eye-witnesses. One, a noted public figure has shared his first hand testimony on television. The government should cease to insult this nation with petulant denials,” he said.

“To the affected governors all over the nation, there is one immediate step to take: demand the withdrawal of those soldiers.  Convoke Town Hall meetings as a matter of urgency. 24-hr Curfews are not the solution. Take over the security of your people with whatever resources you can rummage.

“Substitute community self-policing based on Local Councils, to curb hooligan infiltration and extortionist  and destructive opportunism. We commiserate with the bereaved and urge state governments to compensate material losses, wherever,” he added.

Soyinka said to “commence any process of healing at all – dare one assume that this is the ultimate destination of desire? –  the Army must apologize, not merely to the nation but to the global community – the facts are indisputable – you, the military, opened fire on unarmed civilians. There has to be structured restitution and assurance that such aberrations will not again be recorded.

“Then both governance and its security arms can commence a meaningful, lamentably overdue dialogue with  society. Do not attempt to dictate -Dialogue!”

Governor Sule vows to sign death warrant of r.a.p.i.s.t, kidnappers brought before him

The Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has said he will sign death warrants concerning r.a.pists and kidnappers brought before him.

Sule made the statement while inaugurating the sensitisation programme for action against the persistence cases of r.a.pe and kidnapping across the 13 local government areas of the state on Wednesday.

He said r.a.pe and kidnapping were the most stringent security challenges that had been confronting the state, adding that the 36 states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, had their peculiar security challenges.

He said, “I will sign any death sentences regarding r.a.pe and kidnapping brought before me.”

The governor added that he would soon institute death penalty as consequences for r.a.pe and kidnapping, pointing out that a stiffer penalty for rapists and kidnappers would deter those who had the intention of embarking on such act.

“If the state Assembly come up with a law to make death sentence a penalty for r.a.pists and kidnappers, I will sign that into a law.”

Return Friday or face music, Obaseki tells escapee inmates

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has given the escapees from the Benin Medium Security Correctional Centre and Oko Medium Security Correctional Centre till Friday midnight to return voluntarily or face the wrath of the law.

The Nigerian Correctional Service disclosed on Wednesday that 1,993 inmates escaped from the facilities.

The governor, who, in company with his deputy, Philip Shaibu, and other top police or military officers in the state, inspected the affected correctional centres and the police stations that were burnt in Benin City by hoodlums, who hijacked the #EndSARS protests, lamented the extent of destruction.

The governor said, “You will agree with me that this is not in the spirit of the #EndSARS protest. This is sheer criminality. The real protesters were focusing on the reform of our policing system and not to destroy government property, break into prisons and release inmates.

“So, you can tell that there were some criminal intentions behind these acts and the #EndSARS protest in Edo was hijacked by criminals and they used the opportunity to release their colleagues who were held in our correctional centres.”

He commended the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, for sending a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Celestine Okoye, to Benin to put the situation under control.

He said, “We know that some of the inmates may have been released by their friends and others used the opportunity to get out of the facilities. We are using this opportunity to appeal to all inmates in our correctional services who have escaped to come back on their own before the close of business on Friday this week.

“If they come in and go to the Nigeria Police Force Command headquarters in Benin City, nothing will be done to them. However, those who do not report back after Friday night, we have all their records, we will go after them and appropriate sanctions will be meted against them.”

Hoodlums kill Ogun DCO, steal arms, DPO missing

Angry protesters on Wednesday killed the Divisional Crime Officer, DSP Augustine Ogbeche, and set ablaze a police station  in the Atan-Ota Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State .

The protesters also inflicted injuries on the Divisional Police Officer, SP Sikiru Olugbenga, whose whereabouts were unknown.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement.

Oyeyemi said one civilian also lost his life to the violence while another police station at Obada-Oko in the Ewekoro Local Government Area, which had been serving as a zonal  intervention office for the defunct  Special Anti-Robbery Squad was attacked.

Oyeyemi said, “The hitherto peaceful protest embarked upon by youths across Ogun State is unfortunately taking a dangerous violent dimension as some people with ulterior motives are now using the opportunity to commit all sorts of heinous crimes.

“Early this (Wednesday)  morning, the protesters went to Atan-Ota and set the police station there ablaze and subsequently murdered the DCO, DSP Augustine Ogbeche, in cold blood.

“A civilian also died in the process while some arms were carted away. They also inflicted serious injury on the DPO, SP Sikiru Olugbenga, whose whereabouts is yet unknown.

“Also in Abeokuta, some groups of boys attacked Obada-oko divisional headquarters and vandalized it.”

The PPRO however said in view of the attacks on the police and their stations, the  Commissioner of Police Ogun State Command, Edward Ajogun, had appealed  to the youths to eschew violence and embrace peace.

The police boss, according to the PPRO, said, “The youths are reminded that since the commencement of the protests the police have been nice and civil to them even when some of our men were injured and our stations damaged.

“We even went ahead and released all the 36 suspects we arrested. However, if in the course of handling the protests anybody feels offended, we plead understanding and not retaliatory measures, including killing and maiming policemen and burning and damaging police stations.

“We will ensure that justice is served any aggrieved person.  Please and please let us continue to embrace peace rather than violence.”

“The command sincerely appeals to the youths. Parents and guardians are also enjoined to help rein in their children and wards.”

Lekki shooting: Did Wikipedia just mock the Nigerian Army?

Did Wikipedia just mock the Army? Following  the alleged killing of seven #EndSARS protesters by soldiers at Lekki Tollgate, on Tuesday, Wikipedia has listed “killing of peaceful protesters at Lekki Tollgate, Lagos” among engagements by the Nigerian Army.

A visit to the Wikipedia page of the Nigerian Army on Wednesday confirmed this.

There were nine other engagements attributed to the Nigerian Army, namely Boko Haram insurgency, invasion of The Gambia, Northern Mali war, and Nigeria-Cameroon border conflict.

Others are Nigerian Civil War, Congo Crisis, First Liberian Civil War, among others.

Pastor Adeboye condemns Lekki toll gate shootings

According to a statement released on his Facebook page about an hour ago, the man of God condemned the shooting in the strongest possible terms.

The statement....

''I condemn in the strongest possible terms, attacks launched by the Nigerian military on unarmed young people, who have been peacefully protesting police brutality over the last 12 days as #EndSARS protests.

I am confounded that prior to the sad events at the #LekkiTollGate, the Nigerian Police failed to arrest  the weapon-bearing hoodlums who were attacking the well-organized and non-violent  #EndSARS protesters.

The condemnable actions of the military risks driving the agitations of the young people underground, thereby making the situation unmanageable.

I call on the Federal Government to thoroughly investigate the tragic events at Lekki and other parts of the country, give justice to all victims even as it engages the

#EndSARS protesters to reach a common agreement to end police brutality.

I am also appealing to the Youths to allow peace reign & stop any form of action that would give the Military any other form of excuse to attack.

May the peace of God come upon our nation, now more than ever in JESUS name (Amen)

E.A. Adeboye''

#EndSARS: Ooni condemns attack on protesters

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi has offered to lead traditional rulers in Nigeria to mediate between the Federal Government and organisers of the #EndSARS Movement, saying the killings of unarmed young protesters at Lekki toll gate is disheartening and regrettable.

A statement issued by his Media aide, Moses Olafare stated that the monarch said while government decision to protect public facility is necessary but ought not to deploy soldiers to unarmed protesters untill grievances have been exhausted.

He said such preemptive strikes can only worsen an already combustible situation, while stressing that more patience and dialogue is needed to bring both parties to the table to set timelines for the implementation of the demands of the movement.

“Tension has risen on both sides. It is time to calm down and allow traditional rulers, as fathers of the Nation to lead the way to peace and restoration of trust. We must find amicable solutions even though this Lekki Toll Gate attack, has regrettably eroded the trust needed to establish dialogue and ensure a civic process for resolving the crises. We must not be tired.

“Our political leadership must immediately investigate the circumstances that led to the avoidable confrontation and consequent loss of lives with a view to swiftly fishing out the unlawful attackers who must be made to face the law.

“We need to manage the process of listening to them and working with them to jointly arrive at the new Nigeria of our collective dreams, a dream that President Muhammadu Buhari has recognised as a statesman and our president.

“There is no doubt the exploitation of the protests by criminals attacking prisons, police stations and public facilities put the government on the edge and might have led to the military option but it is important to separate hoodlums committing these heinous crimes from protesters gathered in a specific location to draw attention to their legitimate demands.

“There is a clear difference between the criminal hoodlums who have begun to hijack the hitherto peaceful protests and the patriotic Nigerian youths who were daily converging at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos and selected locations in other states including Abuja FCT in line with global best practices of protest gathering.

“It is the hoodlums and vagrants perpetrating all manners of criminality discrediting the noble ideology of the peaceful Youths that should be demobilized and arrested.

“The hoodlums were always seen in tattered dresses armed with dangerous weapons, perpetrating all manners of criminality like jailbreak, forceful extortion from motorists, bag snatching, arson, vandalism, maiming and killings. They were only disguising to be protesters, while the real ideological protesters most of whom are well known human rights activists, corporate Nigerians, very successful private individuals, popular artistes and other celebrities are the ones at the Lekki Toll Gate and other selected spots across the country even at times joined by government officials including governors of respective states.

“The Federal and State governments have in no doubt shown responsibility by accepting the demands of the EndSARS movement. The youths should create a platform to monitor its implementation.

“Our children are on the streets rather than checking out because they believe in the future of Nigeria and that our system is flexible enough to adapt to changes for better perfornance.

“Their generation was nurtured with the values of efficiency, transparency, accountability and value chains. These are the noble values they seek to inject into our polity so that our country can realise its potential as a world power,” he added.
