Four feared dead in Kogi stampede for palliatives

Four persons were feared to have died on Sunday afternoon in Kogi as hundreds of residents stormed a warehouse in Lokoja in search of COVID-19 palliatives.

The warehouse, located along the Murtala Mohammed Way, close to Kpata the market was reportedly invaded as early as 7am on Saturday through Sunday, mostly by the women.

The fatalities, it was gathered, resulted from stampede by residents who rushed at the government warehouse.

The State Government had last week commenced distribution of COVID-19 palliatives to the 21 local government areas.

Each local government area got at least one trailer load of palliative items, including rice, semovita, indomie noodles and pastas in 10 kilogram packs.

The siege on the warehouse, it was gathered, might not be unconnected with an order by Governor Yahaya Bello the remaining items be distributed to people.

A source, who claimed to have been at the scene, told The Nation the casualties were recorded despite warnings by security personnel deployed to the area the residents should maintain the peace and avoid anything that may lead to stampede.

Some of the women, who spoke with TheNatio correspondent, confirmed they were there in response to the Governor’s directive that the remaining items be distributed to them.

Meanwhile, the government has expressed appreciation to residents who turned out to share in the palliatives.

The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, in a statement on Sunday said: “Report at our disposal showed that local government authorities ensured the palliatives reached the masses and helped in ameliorating the hardship visited on our nation as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We urge our people to continue to stand tall in public conduct as government will always put their welfare on the front burners.

“The Government of Kogi State also wishes to sound a note of warning to miscreants that all constitutional efforts will be geared towards protecting shop owners in the state as any violation of law and order will be met with superior resistance by law enforcement agencies.

“Our people should go about their normal businesses as Kogi State remains safe.”

Despite fired tear gas, defiant mob loots warehouse in Abuja

It was a chaotic scene at the Idu Industrial Layout in the nation’s capital, Abuja on Sunday as irate youths invaded the area in an attempt to break into the chain of warehouses in the layout.

Buoyed by the successes of the initial looters, many residents of the area were said to have trooped into the industrial layout to get what they erroneously consider as a piece of the “national cake”.

Although most of the warehouses in the industrial layout are privately owned, it was gathered that one of the facilities was initially used to hold COVID-19 palliatives.

However, the warehouses that were looted on Sunday belong to companies owned by private individuals as the one owned by the government was said to be largely empty of stocks.

While the police fired gunshots and tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd, many of them stood their grounds and bolted with several items including mattresses, bags of rice, cereals and textiles materials.

Many of those who took part in the looting went with motorcycles, Rickshaw (tricycles) and a few with vehicles. They were seen conveying their loot through the Idu-Jiwa route.

As of the time of filing this report, many offices in the area had shut down and asked their staff to go home.

There were concerns that the crowd could go after several other private warehouses in the area which plays host to many factories, with warehouses for storage.

At the Dakibiyu village in Jabi district, there were concerns that some hoodlums may have gained access into a warehouse belonging to the National Emergency Management Agency NEMA.

''And so I take my place among those attempting to provide such a voice as I watch with eager anticipation and anxiousness as you take your every step to finding your place amid the confusion and cacophony of life.

Looted Motorcycles: Teslim Folarin breaks silence, speaks about how he got to have the equipment

Senator Teslim Folarin representing Oyo Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has counted what he lost after angry youths invaded and looted his home at the weekend.

The lawmaker revealed in a statement on Saturday that over 1,100 empowerment items such as motorcycles, deep freezers, generators, and grinding machines, among others were looted.

The youths attacked his house at the Oluyole Estate extension in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Senator Folarin said the attack was carried out by those he described as coordinated hoodlums, adding that the invasion was evil, barbaric and unfortunate.

He insisted that the invaders and looters were not the same youths protesting against police brutality and an end to operation of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, “but coordinated hoodlums.”

He described the incident as pure daylight robbery, adding that the attackers broke down doors to rooms in the house to steal valuable assets.

“The actions of the hoodlums are condemnable, and it is very disheartening that some bad elements in our society are hiding under the guise of #ENDSARS protests to loot and disrupt peaceful atmosphere in Nigeria,” he said.

“I thank God we did not record any fatality, despite the violent invasion of my Oluyole house, looting of materials and vandalisation therein.

For the sake of clarification, I have just formally taken receipt of the empowerment materials from a federal agency coordinating constituency projects for federal lawmakers.

“Also, I used my personal money to procure additional materials. I took stock of the materials ahead of a mega empowerment programme scheduled to hold in November 2020.

“Looted materials included over 350 motorcycles, 400 deep freezers, 350 generators, grinding machines, sewing machines, hairdressing and barbing salon materials, vulcanising machines and many more.”

Aftermath of #EndSARS protests: Daylight robbers terrorize Onitsha residents

Barely 24 hours after the bloody EndSARS protests embarked upon by angry youths in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, armed robbers have started terrorizing residents of the commercial city even in broad daylight.

Between the later part of Friday and early part of yesterday when the protests subsided, robbers have continued to operate freely, according to residents.

Meanwhile, the EndSARS protesters have vowed to continue the protests until their demands were met, warning that the elders must give way for youths to take over leadership.

Reacting to the development, some legal practitioners in Onitsha, Sir Ben Okoko, Sir Anayo Emejue, Ejike Efobi, Maurice Efobi, Sylvester E,ze and Chukwudi Nwokediuko, noted that protests are allowed under the law to express feelings but warned against violence during such protests.

Okoko, Emejue, Efobi, Efobi, Eze and Nwokediuko pleaded with the Federal Government to address the demands of the protesting youths as, according to them, what the youths really need is job assurance, good governance, police reform, security and hope for the future.

We are not hoarding Covid-19 palliatives in FCT - Minister

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Aliyu, has assured residents of the territory that there are no hoarded palliative items in various stores across the territory.

She equally assured that items for flood victims are safe and secured, as security agents are being deployed to man strategic areas.

This is following a pandemonium that occurred on Saturday in Abuja where hoodlums tried to loot warehouse where Covid-19 palliative items are believed to be kept.

The minister, also stated that the FCT Administration had in the past few months distributed all items procured and also distributed donated items to the Area Councils, Community Associations, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Professional bodies/associations, stressing the administration has continued to receive donations that are distributed on a continuous basis, very transparently.

According to a statement issued by her Special Assistant, Media, Austin Elemue, the minister affirmed that details of such distributions are in the public domain, reaching more than a million households and individuals across the territory, just as the minister stated that the administration did ensure that CSOs and the ICPC participated in the distribution exercise to ensure transparency.

Aliyu revealed that warehouses are supposed to stock supplies for emergency response including the recurrence of COVID-19 emergency, warning that unsuspecting members of the public should therefore not be lured into criminality under the guise of ‘hoarded’ palliative food items in the territory.

Massive crowd storms Tinubu’s residence in London [Video]

Nigerians demanding the end to police brutality and bad governance in line with the #EndSARS tagline storm the London residence of APC National Leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday.

According to the video posted by African Independent Television, only a few of them carried placards with many chanting derogatory words as they stormed Tinubu’s residence at Duchess Mews, Portland Place.

This is coming after the APC leader was accused of ordering security forces to open fire on #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki tollgate area of Lagos State – a claim he has denied.

Tinubu responded by stating he will never be part of any carnage.

“Why will they use live bullets?

“I will never, never be part of any carnage. I will never be part of that.”

The former Lagos state governor also denied having any investment in the Lekki Concession Company, the firm which manages the tollgate.

He said: “I have no dime, no kobo investment in the tollgate.”

“We are about 13 to 14 days into the protests now. Before now, I was being accused and reported to the Presidency that I was behind the protests, that I was a sponsor of the protests.”

Tinubu had also “appealed to the youths” and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to respond to the demands of the protesters.

“That was why he (Sanwo-Olu) set up the Judicial Commission of Inquiry. The governor has gone to the home of one of the victims to appeal to them.

“He has put N200m together as part of restitution and compensation for those attacked,” he added.
