Drama as 58 year-old woman storms church to block estranged husband’s wedding plans

There was drama at Our Lady of Fatima in Jinja City after a woman who separated from her husband 30 years ago stormed the church service to block his plans of marrying another woman.

Ms Mary Baseka Norah, 58, stormed the Sunday morning service demanding the church leaders to halt the marriage banns and other wedding preparations for her husband, Mr Martin Tibalira with whom she has two children.

Flanked by her daughters, Ms Baseka interrupted the marriage banns saying she could not allow her husband to take on another woman (Ms Proscovia Nabirye) as his wife because they are still legally married.

However, as she was still explaining, police was called to intervene before she was hounded out of the church and ordered to leave the premises.

Her daughters faulted police officers for unfair treatment of their mother whom they said was seeking justice in a peaceful manner.

“Why are you chasing our mother from the church? What has she done? She has come to pray. Is it because Mr Tibalira has paid you? It isn’t right at all,” One of the daughters shouted.

A copy of the marriage certificate seen by this reporter show that Ms Baseka and Mr Tibalira, a prominent businessman in Jinja City got married on March 28, 1981. However, they separated in 1985 over Mr Tibalira’s promiscuous actions.

“I am here to stop my husband from marrying another woman because we are still legally married. However, I’m surprised to see police hounding me from the church yet I would think they are supposed to protect me. To the best of my knowledge, church rules provide that Tibalira is not allowed to marry another woman unless we are divorced,” Ms Baseka said.

Ms Baseka said she had first sought the intervention of the church leaders but they ignored her, prompting her to attend today’s church service and make her concerns known during the banns.

“When I went to the church leaders, they paid me a deaf ear. They said they would continue with the wedding plans. I thought they were joking until I heard his name being mentioned during marriage banns,” she said.

One-day-old baby dies after being mauled by dog who tried to bury him in garden

A mum who 'popped to the loo' returned to find her Rottweiler had snatched her newborn in its jaws and was trying to bury it.

The one-day-old baby died after the dog mauled it at the family home in Hamilton, New Zealand, in a horrifying attack.

A neighbour told Stuff.co.nz she found the mum weeping, cradling her crying dirt and blood-covered baby boy.

Police said the infant, who had been born the night before, suffered critical injuries in the attack at about 7pm on Sunday, according to reports.

Paramedics rushed the infant to Waikato Hospital, but a police spokesperson confirmed to reporters the baby boy died overnight.

A neighbour, named only as Karen, told Stuff the mum had given birth the night before the attack.

She said one of the family's two dogs had attacked the tiny newborn at their Enderley home, in New Zealand's North Island.

Karen had been at the house earlier in the day, she said.

The family's new two-year-old Rottweiler escaped the property, and she had caught and returned it to their fenced-off section.

When she returned a second time, she met the newborn - describing the mum as extremely happy with her new baby.

Karen said she walking down the street to see the family again later that day when she saw a commotion.

To her shock, Karen found the mum sitting on the grass outside the home, weeping and cradling her injured and crying baby.

She told Stuff: “He was just so little. He was all dirty and had bits of blood on him.

“She told me which dog did it – they have two. It was the rottweiler.

Karen said she understood the dog had tried to bury the baby boy after attacking it.

“All she did was pop to the toilet and it happened just like that. The whole thing is horrible, every time I close my eyes I just see him.”

Both of the dogs were taken to the pound, Karen said.

She said she almost felt guilty for taking the dog home following its escape after finding out what it had done.

Police told media officers had referred the baby's death to the coroner.

Local authorities said a decision on the dog's future had not yet been made.

Hamilton City Council animal control manager Susan Stanford told media: "Staff collected the dog and it is now secured at the council's animal control facility.

"Further decisions regarding the animal will be informed by the ongoing police investigation."

Serial killer nicknamed Lucifer murdered 48 inmates during his 25 years behind bars

A serial killer nicknamed 'Lucifer' has been accused of murdering 48 other inmates during his 25 years behind bars.

The extent of Marcos Paulo da Silva's violence has earned him comparisons to Britain’s most dangerous prisoner, Charles Bronson.

The 42-year-old Brazilian was just 18 when he was first incarcerated for petty theft in 1995 but soon emerged as a vicious killer.

He is said to have murdered five inmates in one go in Serra Azul Jail in Sao Paulo in 2011 in one of his most bloodiest attacks to date.

His signature is to cut his victims’ heads off and disembowel them after killing them.

Da Silva will likely die behind bars after racking up multiple convictions and sentences totalling 217 years - although he has yet to be tried for many of his alleged crimes.

Da Silva is said to have told a judge recently: “I have no regrets about killing all these people.

“They were rapists and thieves who took advantage of other inmates and robbed them.”

His astonishing prison history was laid bare in a recent report by Brazilian online firm UOL which has been picked up by newspapers in South America as well as Portugal.

He has been described as the leader of a gang of assassins created with the mission of murdering members of the PCC, one of Brazil’s leading gangs formed by inmates as a self-protection group in the country’s brutal prison system.

Prison guards told UOL it was only a “question of time” before da Silva, covered in tattoos which include skulls, devils and a Swastika, kills again once he is transferred to a new prison.

He switched allegiances and turned against PCC after joining the gang as a 19-year-old following his first teenage conviction.

He reportedly used a fire extinguisher to knock his Serra Azul Prison victims unconscious before beheading them with a home-made knife in his most infamous jail massacre to date.

He is said to have yelled: “I love this, there’s so few, I want to kill more prisoners” as he snubbed out their lives.

The number of prisons willing to take him is now drying up. Psychologists say he is not mentally ill but does suffer from a personality disorder that needs to be urgently treated.

Armed robber Charles Bronson, 67, has spent the last 45 years in prison after repeatedly having his sentence increased for attacking prison staff and taking them hostage.

Hoodlums steal Obafemi Awolowo’s glasses from his statue

Days after Lagos government declared a curfew to curb the looting and destruction across the state, the glasses on Obafemi Awolowo’s statue in Ikeja are still missing.

Hoodlums had hijacked the #EndSARS protest in the state, unleashing violence on residents and destroying public and private properties.

Man, 70 chops off his genitals after being accused of cheating

A small-scale tea farmer in Kericho County, Kenya has been admitted to hospital in critical condition after he reportedly chopped off his private parts in a fit of rage.

The 70-year-old man from Getarwet Sub-Location in Bureti constituency was rushed to Litein Mission Hospital after he inflicted the injury on himself following a domestic quarrel over alleged infidelity.

Cheating, as marriage counsellors point out, is an offence that many couples don’t easily forget. However, the worst feeling is being falsely accused.

According to Sylvester Sigei, the Getarwet Sub-County assistant chief, the man used a kitchen knife on himself after being accused of cheating.

He was accused of “satisfying other village women, especially widows, while neglecting his own”.

Sigei said: “When the man’s wife and children confronted him for allegedly wasting his limited tea earnings on village women, he denied the allegation and for good measure chopped off his manhood.”

The man, Sigei said, has four acres under tea. His family says that they have never enjoyed the tea bonus paid by the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) despite working on the farm.

“Among the accusations levelled at the man is that he has used his tea bonus to construct a permanent house for a widow he intends to inherit yet his family does not have a good house.”

Neighbours, who rushed to the scene on hearing commotion, found the man lying in a pool of his own blood.

Two women insert batteries in their victim’s genitals, seal her womanhood with superglue

Police in Kandara, Murang’a County, Kenya have launched a hunt for two women who abducted and mutilated their victim’s genitals in late September 2020.

The victim, a 32-year-old resident of Gitura Village in Kandara, says she suspects her female neighbour, whom she has been having differences with for two years now, hired the women to torture her.

The victim told K24 Digital that her neighbour had advised her to leave her (victim’s) husband following unending marital dispute.

“Every time she (neighbour) would return home and find me in my house, she would tell me: ‘you are still here? I thought you have already left him’.

She developed hatred towards me after I told her that I was not going to leave my husband as she (neighbour) had advised,” the victim, a mother of three, said.

“Since that day, she has never spoken to me. On several occasions, she has incited her children to abuse mine. When I confronted her mid this year, she vowed to teach me a lesson, saying: ‘wewe, utajua siku moja (you will regret one day),” said the mother-of-three.

On September 26, 2020, the victim was stopped on her way home by people who were in a saloon car, pretending they wanted to buy land in the victim’s neighbourhood.

“They asked me the price range for different sizes of land in Kenol Town. I told them I did not know, but they could come another day when I would have already gathered enough information. It was during that brief conversation that one of the car occupants came out and sprayed a chemical substance in my eyes. They, thereafter, bundled me into the car and took me to an abandoned house, where they tortured me.” The incident happened at 6pm when the victim was returning home from buying milk in the neighbourhood.

The victim said while semi-conscious, she saw two women injecting her with an unknown substance and, thereafter, inserting two battery cells in her genitals before sealing her womanhood with superglue.

The victim was, thereafter, dumped on the Kagia-Kariguini Road, a few meters from her home.

“I couldn’t answer a short call of nature for a few days, prompting me to visit the hospital, where a surgical operation was performed on me,” said the mother-of-three.

After being discharged from the Maragua Sub-County Hospital, the victim filed a report at Kabati Police Station.

So far, no suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Kandara Sub-County OCPD, Isaac Thuranira, confirmed the incident to K24 Digital, saying the case is being handled by DCI officers in the area.

The victim alleges that her neighbour, whom she suspects organised the attack, has been threatening to harm her if she doesn’t withdraw the matter.

Hoodlums attack Akire’s palace In Osun state, held monarch hostage

Suspected hoodlums, on Monday, attacked the palace of Akire of Ikire, Oba Olatunde Falabi, in Osun State and held the monarch hostage.

The monarch was later ferried to safety by a team of security men, who dislodged the hoodlums.

The Chairman, Irewole Local Government Area, Ikire, Remilekun Abbas, blamed the incident on the kingship tussle in the town.

He said, “The incident in Ikire is not connected to the #EndSARS matter. It was caused by a kingship tussle. A family is locked in a tussle with the current Akire. The other side involved in the tussle attacked the palace.

“There is no causality. The security men have rescued the monarch. He has been taken out of the palace. Soldiers are on the streets and the situation is calm now.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the attack on the palace.

Opalola said a police Armoured Personnel Carrier was shot at by the hoodlums, who laid siege to the palace.

“But our operatives still managed to rescue the monarch. We have taken him out of the palace. Normalcy has returned to the area,” Opalola added.

#EndSARS: Flights grounded, as hoodlums dig crater on Akure airport

Flight operations were completely grounded in Akure Airport, Ondo State, following the discovery of a crater dug on the runway of the airport.

This came as ten suspected looters in Ondo State have been arrested by police detectives, who used the EndSARS protest to break into people’s shops and offices.

This came as the Executive Secretary of the Osun Health Insurance Scheme, OHIS, Dr. Samuel Oginni, yesterday, disclosed that hoodlums looted and vandalised N120million worth of drugs and equipment belonging to the agency.

Similarly, the Ekiti State government, yesterday, hinted that the Judicial Panel of Inquiry, set up to investigate cases of police brutalities and rights abuses in the state, would commence sitting on November 2, 2020.

Hoodlums dig crater on runway.

The crater was allegedly dug on the runway by some suspected hoodlums during the #EndSARS protest in the state.

Officials of the Airport Authority reportedly discovered the crater in the night and alerted the management who thereafter halted flight operations.

Management of the airport was forced to shut the airports thereby preventing flight from either taking off or landing in the airport.

Vanguard gathered that the sudden development in the airport made travelling by air through the Akure Airports impossible.

An airport source told newsmen that: “The hole was discovered during the early Monday check by the security of the airport.

“We are yet to know those behind it. I think the intention of the miscreants was to cause plane crash in the airport.

“The security operatives have been invited to see the place. The government has to deploy the security agents to the airport so as not to allow the miscreants cause havoc there.”

When contacted, spokesperson of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Henrietta Yakubu, said that the cracks were discovered on the runway during the routine checks on Monday morning.

Lekki toll-gate shootings: Sanwo-Olu insists only 2 persons died

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, yesterday, insisted that there were only two recorded deaths and no bloodstain at the scene of the Lekki Toll Gate shooting.

Several reports stated that no fewer than 30 protesters died as a result of the shooting which had generated public outcry after security operatives believed to be soldiers fired live bullets into the crowd of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate at Admiralty Circle Way.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke to CNN’s Becky Anderson, said: “Two dead bodies, that is what we have seen from all the morgues, that’s what we have seen going to hospitals, that’s what we have seen as a record.

“What has happened is that there have been so many footages that were seen, that people have shown, but we have not seen bodies, we have not seen relatives, we have not seen anybody truly coming out to say I am a father or a mother to someone and I cannot find that person. Nobody has turned up. I have been to the ground; there is no scratch of blood anywhere there.

“From the footage that we could see, because there were cameras at that facility, it seems to me that they would be men in military uniform. That’s what the footage shows.”

While insisting that there was no form of international pressure as a result of the protests, Sanwo-Olu said: “I genuinely believe there would be change. For two reasons; what has happened, especially in Lagos is extremely unimaginable. It was also a clarion call for all of us in government understanding and realizing what the youths want us to be doing. It hit all of us like a thunderbolt and it was just a wake-up call.”

Sanwo-Olu assured that the Close Circuit Television, CCTV, footages will be part of the investigation by the judicial panel already set up to investigate the incident, which according to him has already started sitting on Monday.

He said: “People have claimed that their friends and family members have been killed or went missing over the years. That is what the judicial panel is meant to do. It is to answer all the unanswered questions and ensure justice.

“We will invite those who have one case or the other to try and identify those officers who were responsible.”

When asked if he was committed to a full investigation of the incident, the governor responded, “absolutely”.

He said: “It’s beyond my control to mete out punishment to those found culpable; however, those responsible will be held accountable.

“I am not the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. The report will be out; we will channel the report to all the relevant authorities in the State to ensure everyone that is found culpable is accountable for the act.”

On disbanded SARS, Sanwo-Olu said: “It would be unfair to generalize everyone like that. Everyone agrees that there is a reform that needs to take place, there is a change that needs to take place, and there is some truth that needs to come on board.

“I have been an advocate that indeed, they should be scrapped, let us have genuine reforms and let us have a better conversation of how we police our citizens and the State so that we can have more enduring citizens and police relationships.”

Police parade 114 suspected looters in Kwara

The Police in Kwara on Monday paraded 114 suspects alleged to have been part of hoodlums who looted malls and other private businesses in Ilorin.

He revealed that all paraded suspects were caught with looted items in their possession.

The police commissioner urged members of the public to divulge information that could lead to the arrest of looters to the police.

He also urged those in possession of such looted items to voluntarily surrender them to the police or any of the head of the security agencies in the state assuring that they will not face prosecution for surrendering looted items.

But Egbetokun also vowed that the command in collaboration with other sister security agencies would leave no stone unturned in the bid to arrest all those who took part in the looting spree.
