Toke Makinwa tests positive for coronavirus

Media personality, Toke Makinwa has tested positive for coronavirus.

She announced this today on her instagram page, less than a week to her birthday.

According to Makinwa who turns 36 on November 3, she has been battling with the virus for about two weeks and is unsure how she got infected.

Although Makinwa is not out of the woods yet, she remains hopeful that the worst days are far gone.

Read her statement below:

I have been missing in action for a bit guys, the last two weeks of my life has been pretty tough to handle. I tested positive to COVID-19 and my experience wasn’t great (I mean it’s Covid), shooting this Vlog was a lot as I am not a 100 per cent yet but I’m hopeful the worst days are behind me.

Covid is real guys, there is a second wave of the virus in town and it is spreading really fast. I can’t say for sure where I caught it but the worst thing for me was contact-tracing. Having to call people I have been exposed to, to tell them to quarantine and trace people they have also been exposed to, the whole thing is a mess.

I share my experience on the Vlog today which is late I know but pls be patient with me, the road to recovery is a lot, I am tired all the time, I have a bit of memory loss and I’m trying to find out what day is what. Doesn’t help that Nigeria itself has gone through something in this time too.

Phewwww!!!! Health is the real wealth guys, pls be safe out there. My birthday is in less than a week, I just want to be 100% again. Covid is real, wear your mask and wash your hands always. Ok bye”

8-year old boy hailed as a hero after saving his mum, sister and pet from fire [photos]

A hero eight-year-old boy saved his mum, sister and pet rabbit from their burning home after he luckily woke early and alerted the family to the blaze.

Amy Brown was alerted to the fire by son Jenson early on October 13, who had gone downstairs to watch television at around 6am.

But he soon raced back upstairs to tell his mum the screen had exploded - the fire turned out to have been caused by the tumble dryer setting on fire.

The family were forced to flee the house in Swindon, Wilts., as the flames spread quickly, eventually gutting the house - costing them everything.

A fundraiser has since been launched to help Amy and partner Richard Bird out, which has already topped £1,000.

Amy, 33, said: "It's an ongoing joke in our family that Jenson gets up at 5am.

"If he had stayed in bed that day things could have been very different. We're not going to get him to stay in bed again!

"As I came downstairs I could see smoke starting to come under the kitchen door. He alerted me to the fact there was something wrong."

Amy then took the children outside and went back into the kitchen - where the smoke was so thick that she couldn't see the family rabbit, three year-old Naala.

The local fire service was then called and, happily, managed to rescue the pet, who appeared none the worse for her ordeal.

But Amy added: "Everything we had is just completely destroyed. The insurance company has told us there's nothing that can be fixed. We've lost everything.

"[The fundraiser] is not something you expect. I was shocked by the fact she'd done it in the first place.

"It warms my heart to know there are people out there willing to help when help is needed."

Corruption: South Korean ex-President gets 17-year jail term

Former South Korean president Lee Myung-bak was ordered back to prison Thursday as the country’s Supreme Court upheld a 17-year jail term for bribery and embezzlement offences.

The conservative Lee, who served as president from 2008 to 2013, had been out on bail awaiting the ruling and was not in court for the decision, but police were seen at his Seoul home to take him away, according to reports.

The ruling is not subject to further appeal and at age 78 means Lee is likely to die in prison unless he receives a presidential pardon.

All four of South Korea’s living former presidents are either behind bars or have served jail terms — often as a result of investigations begun under successors who are political rivals.

Lee was first convicted of embezzlement and accepting bribes in late 2018 and jailed. An appeals court later increased his sentence to 17 years but granted him bail pending a further appeal to the nation’s highest court.

The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld his conviction for embezzling 25.2 billion won ($22 million) and accepting bribes totalling 9.4 billion won, as well as the 17-year sentence.

Lee is also subject to a 13-billion-won fine and must forfeit assets of 5.7 billion won.

“There was no legal fallacy in the appellate court’s ruling on bribery and embezzlement,” the Supreme Court said in a statement.

Lee’s conservative successor Park Geun-hye is currently serving 20 years in jail for bribery and abuse of power after being ousted in 2017 over a corruption scandal that prompted massive street protests.

Another former leader, the liberal Roh Moo-hyun, took his own life after being questioned in a corruption probe involving his family — an inquiry that took place during Lee’s presidency.

Roh was the political mentor of incumbent President Moon Jae-in, who served in the Blue House throughout Roh’s presidency, including a year as his chief of staff.

Presidency rejects Amnesty’s report on Lekki shootings

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has rejected the report by Amnesty International on the Lekki shootings.

Adesina, who is the President’s most senior spokesman, said on Thursday that Amnesty could not have more facts about the country than the Presidency which has a ‘helicopter view’ of things happening in the country.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, Adesina said the looting and rioting were not caused by the military shootings because there was already violence before the Lekki incident.

Responding to a question on the Lekki shootings, he said, “You are not quite correct. You are falling for the narrative of Amnesty International. And Amnesty is wrong. Anarchy had broken loose before even Lekki. The prisons in Benin and Oko had been broken open before Lekki. Orile police station had been burnt before Lekki.

“Many policemen had been burnt before Lekki. So, you cannot say it was Lekki that precipitated all those things. Look at the timelines, look at when all those things. You will discover that it had happened before Lekki. So, you are falling for the gambit of Amnesty International.

“Amnesty International does not have all the facts, they don’t run this country, they shouldn’t know beyond what they have been told. They shouldn’t know more than you and I should know as media people as watchers of developments.”

When asked if it was the President’s thinking that Amnesty’s report was wrong, Adesina said the global watchdog had been known to always make unsubstantiated reports about Nigeria.

“Many times, the military has come out to dispute facts brought out by Amnesty,” he said.

When probed further as to whether the President approved the military action in Lekki as the commander-in-chief, Adesina said he would not want to undermine the work of the panel of inquiry looking into the matter.

Cayman Islands open to remote workers, but only if you earn over $100,000

Remote workers who need a change in scenery could well bag a bucket-list-worthy alternative to a home office.

That's because the Cayman Islands have just launched a new scheme for "professionals and digital nomads", allowing them to stay for up to two years.

Just picture it; morning strolls on the beach, lunchtime swims in those crystalline waters, and heaps of sunny weather.

The new Global Citizen Concierge Program is open for applications, and allows remote workers to come and live on the island for up to two years.

It all sounds quite dreamy - but the salary requirements will quickly bring you back down to reality.

That's because the scheme requires you to show that you're earning at least $100,000 if you're a single household.

Bringing a spouse/partner along for the adventure? You'll need to prove you're making at least $150,000.

Oh, and those costs go up if you're looking to bring your kids along too.

Still, if you are intrigued then you can find out more on the Visit Cayman Islands website.

Successful applicants will be granted a stay of up to 24 months, not to mention there will be a dedicated concierge to help them find accommodation to help them settle into life in the Cayman Islands.

Fees to take part in the programme start from $1,469  a year, and there will be some additional requirements such as proof of employment and medical insurance.

The Cayman Islands aren't the only dreamy Caribbean hotspots offering a programme of this nature - and some have significantly lower salary requirements if you do want to go.

Islands including Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, and Barbados have all launched schemes for remote workers.

Of course if you don't want to commit to a long-term stay, a holiday could do just the trick - and there are Caribbean islands you can visit without needing to quarantine on either side.

U.S. states reason for blocking Okonjo-Iweala at WTO

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has explained why the Trump administration is opposed to the selection of former Nigerian finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as the director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The United States said it supported instead Korean Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee.

She is “a bona fide trade expert who has distinguished herself during a 25-year career as a successful trade negotiator and trade policy maker, ” the US statement read.

Although the U.S. did not mention Mrs Okonjo-Iweala, it said “The WTO is badly in need of major reform. It must be led by someone with real, hands-on experience in the field.”

The U.S. position was seen Wednesday night as another blow at the WTO by the Trump administration.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who faced a re-election battle on 3 November, had described the WTO as “horrible” and biased towards China.

The Trump administration has already paralysed the WTO’s role as global arbiter on trade by blocking appointments to its appeals panel.

Now it is threatening to render it leaderless for weeks or months to come.

The WTO itself has called a meeting for Nov. 9, less than a week after the U.S. election, by which time it hopes to have secured full backing for Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The decision needs to be approved by consensus, however, meaning any of the 164 WTO members could block her appointment.

After weeks of consultations, three WTO ambassadors, the “troika” charged with finding a successor to Brazilian Roberto Azevedo, announced at a meeting in Geneva on Wednesday that the former Nigerian finance minister should be the next chief as she had secured cross-regional backing.

“All of the delegations that expressed their views today expressed very strong support for the process, for the troika and for the outcome. Except for one,” WTO spokesman Keith Rockwell told reporters after the closed-door meeting, specifying that the one was the United States.

William Reinsch, a former senior Commerce Department official now with the Center for Strategic and International Studies said the U.S. move was likely to worsen trade tensions already running high within the WTO.

“It’s very Trumpian. They’re basically saying ‘We want to get our way and we’re willing to throw sand in the gears if we don’t get it’,” he said, adding that it was possibly a bid to gain concessions in other disputes.

Governor Oyetola relaxes curfew in Osun state

Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State has announced the relaxation of the 24-hour curfew imposed on the state to curtail the looting of government and private property by hoodlums under disguise of #EndSARS protest.

Irish father and his two sons are shot dead in family disagreement over inheritance

Pictures of a dad and his two sons who were found shot dead have been released.

Tadgh O'Sullivan is seen smiling with son Mark on his graduation from University last year, while Diarmuid O’Sullivan is seen smartly dressed with a female companion, grinning outside a front door.

The trio were all found with gunshot wounds in a tragedy which has shocked the community of rural north Cork and the nation of Ireland.

Their bodies were found on land and a farmhouse.

Local media reports Mark was 26, while Tadgh was in his fifties and Diarmuid was 22.

It is alleged that their deaths are linked to a disagreement over family inheritance

It is believed that a major dispute blew up in the family recently over a will relating to a large parcel of land.

It is understood that the police were aware of legally-held firearms in the house, which is relatively isolated and surrounded by land which is popular with local gun-clubs.

The body of the younger brother was found in a bedroom of the farmhouse while his dad and older brother were found up to half a kilometre away in a field.

It was reported that a woman in her 60s raised the alarm, turning up at a neighbour's home, appearing distraught and saying there had been a shooting at her family home.

Khloe Kardashian had coronavirus earlier this year.

This news is confirmed in the clip from Thursday, Oct. 29's all-new Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

The new footage starts off with Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner expressing concern for the Good American mogul.

"We're just anxiously awaiting the results for Khloe to see if she has it or not," Kim shares in a confessional. "I mean, my gut tells me she does, just because she's so sick. An equally nervous Kris goes on to reveal that she's "jumped on the phone with every doctor who would take [her] call."

She continues, "Trying to find somebody that could help her." Unfortunately, as Kim expresses to the KUWTK camera, all the family can do is wait for Khloe's test results.

In self-recorded footage, Khloe confirms that she has tested positive for COVID-19.

"Just found out that I do have corona," True Thompson's mom says. "I have been in my room. It's gonna be fine, but it was really bad for a couple days."

Non-essential businesses, such as restaurants and bars, will close, but schools and factories will remain open.

Refugees 'tortured and forced to strip, lie on top of each other n.a.k.e.d' on border [photos]

Refugees fleeing war and strife were allegedly tortured by police on the Croatian border.

Men have been forced to strip, lie on top of each other n.a.k.e.d and been beaten by men in black uniforms, according to reports received by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC).

The victims believed their attackers were Croatian police officers.

The DRC has also recorded two reports of 'severe s.e.xual abuse' after a police operation to push refugees back into Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The violent 'pushbacks' targeted around 75 people in Velika Kladusa near Siljkovaca, where a forest camp houses at least 700 refugees.

The DRC recorded 'horrifying' testimony from victims of the police operation between October 12 and 16.

"Multiple reports, from different groups of people, of different nationalities – more than 75 persons in one week – who have all independently reported inhumane treatment, savage beatings and even sexual abuse.

"We need to see action to put a stop to the systematic use of violence.

"Treating human beings like this, inflicting severe pain and causing unnecessary suffering, irrespective of their migratory status, cannot and should not be accepted by any European country, or by any EU institution."

She called for independent border monitoring systems to be put in place to prevent abuses and for proper investigations to take place.

Ex-German spy chief warns China will soon dominate the world

China is on the brink of 'world domination' and Europe needs to wake up to the danger, a former German spy chief has said.

Gerhard Schindler said Beijing was 'very cleverly' spreading its influence across Europe, Asia and Africa - warning that its technology is now so advanced that Germany cannot tell if it is being used for sinister purposes.

Schindler called on Germany to strip out Huawei from its 5G mobile network in order to make the country 'less dependent' on Beijing, echoing the US government's fears that Huawei could be used to spy for China's Communist Party.

Schindler also argued that Angela Merkel's decision to open Germany's doors to refugees in 2015 had left the country with a 'large reservoir' of Muslim men who could be vulnerable to 'radicalisation, recruitment and violence'.

European governments are under pressure from Washington to place curbs on Huawei, but Germany has so far stopped short of banning the company outright.

Schindler, who led Germany's intelligence service from 2011 to 2016, said Huawei could create so-called back doors in its 5G systems and 'we would have no idea what they were building'.

'It's as though an engineer specialised in steam engines were supposed to assess an internal combustion engine,' he said.

'You can imagine scenarios where we are in a crisis and the threat "We're going to turn your communication network off" would influence our decisions.'

Schindler said some degree of economic dependence on China was inevitable, for example in Germany's flagship car industry which sells more than 250,000 automobiles a year to Chinese buyers.

Trade between China and Germany was worth a total of €206billion (£186billion) in 2019, making it Germany's largest trade partnership.

However, Schindler said that 'we should strive to be less dependent' rather than seeing everything through the lens of 'business relations'.

Chrissy Teigen pens a heartbreaking essay about losing son

Chrissy Teigen lost her son Jack only weeks ago and has quietly been dealing with the pain ever since with the help of her husband John Legend.

On Tuesday the 34-year-old supermodel opened up about her heartbreaking ordeal in a brave essay posted to Medium.

'I had no idea when I would be ready to write this. Part of me thought it would be early on, when I was still really feeling the pain of what happened,' began the cover girl as she detailed her loss and how the kindness of strangers has helped her recover.

She added, 'I thought I would sit in the corner of my bedroom with the lights dimmed, just rolling off my thoughts. I’d have a glass of red wine, cozy up with a blanket, and finally get the chance to address “what happened."'

What happened is she he gave birth to her third child, a son named Jack, stillborn after severe complications five month into the pregnancy.

Teigen explained she was on her downstairs couch in a blanket after a morning of friends and fried chicken.

'I’m reading off countless notes from my phone — thoughts that have randomly popped up in the weeks since. I didn’t really know how I would start this, no matter the room or state I was in, but it feels right to begin with a thank you,' she said.

The catwalker said flowers and notes from fans have meant a lot to her.  'After we first lost Jack, I found myself incredibly worried that I wasn’t able to thank everyone for their extreme kindness,' she shared.

Many shared 'incredible personal experiences,'  books and poems.

'I wanted to thank everyone, share our story with each individual person. But I knew I was in no state to. For me, the “no need to respond” note was such a true relief. I thank you for each and every one of those.'

One of the standout moments was when she went through the halls of labor and delivery, and John saying “What, is there a f***ing party going on here??”'

'I was about to fully deliver what was supposed to be the 5th member of our beautiful family, a son, only to say goodbye moments later. People cheered and laughed right outside our door, understandably for a new life born and celebrated. You kind of wonder how anyone is thinking about anyone but you,' she said.

Tanzania blocks internet, Twitter as voting opens

Tanzanians are voting today in a general election, amid reports of internet shutdown and the refusal of government to accredit thousands of election monitors.

In addition was the arrest of an opposition leader, Maalim Seif Sharif, in the semi-autonomous islands of Zanzibar.

Sharif is the leader of Zanzibar’s main opposition party ACT Wazalendo.

Voters have until 16:00 local time (13:00 GMT) to cast their ballot. Results are expected to be announced within one week.

Tanzanians began complaining about a blocked internet since Monday.

On Twitter, Tanzanians complained that they could not access social networks like WhatsApp and using certain keywords are restricted on SMS.

Twitter weighed in on the problems on Tuesday, confirming it was “seeing some blocking and throttling” of its services ahead of today’s polls.

It appealed for the respect of “basic human rights”.

“Internet shutdowns are hugely harmful, and violate basic human rights and the principles of the #OpenInternet #KeepItOn”, Twitter said in a tweet.

In the election, President John Magufuli, whose Chama Cha Mapenduzi (CCM) party has ruled Tanzania since independence in 1961, is seeking a second term in office.

His main challenger is Tundu Lissu of the biggest opposition party, Chadema, who survived an assassination attempt three years ago.

He returned from Belgium in July where he had undergone rounds of treatment for gunshot wounds.

The BBC reports that 15 candidates are running for president.

Oyo state receives 46 complaints on police brutality

Barely nine days after opening a platform for people across the state to report incidence of police violation and brutality, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde said no fewer than 46 people have lodged complaints.

Encouraging others to follow suit, he said the complaints would serve as materials for the Judicial Panel of Inquiry to be set up latest by next week to work with.

Makinde spoke on Tuesday during a meeting with representatives of EndSARS protesters, artisans, commercial cab and motorcyclist operators and youths across the state.

The meeting, held at the House of Chiefs, Oyo State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan was a follow up to an earlier meeting held on Monday with traditional rulers, council bosses, security heads, community leaders, religious leaders among others.

The governor, who said the police would return to the state to maintain law and order, added that he had approved the immediate recruitment of 1,500 personnel for the Amotekun Security Corps.

He said the 351 political wards of the state would have Amotekun personnel, noting that they (Amotekun) would work hand-in-hand with the police, but they would be accountable and responsible to him.

Nollywood actress, Omoni Oboli and her husband, Nnamdi, are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary today.

To celebrate the special moment, Nnamdi took to his Instagram page to share a loved-up photo of them and penned this;

''Happy 20th Anniversary to us!!!  Time really flies!

It’s been 20 years???

Amazing!

I thank God for the years. For the beauty of a relationship amidst all the fears. The pain and sorrow and grace we’ve seen.

The journeys and places and levels we’ve been.  We don’t take it for granted that we got this far.

The children and blessings that show us God is truly extra.

We hurt, we cried, we live, we die. We know and pray, for on God alone we rely.

It’s so easy to look back, forget, and think we made alone.

I’m grateful that we’re still a work that’s not yet done.

I wish you, my wife, many many more years together.

I certainly couldn’t have asked for someone better.''

#EndSARS: Alaafin calls out FG, condemns Lekki shooting

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, has called out the Federal Government for not addressing the #EndSARS protesters who staged a campaign to kick against police brutality.

The Alaafin said that if President Muhammadu Buhari had addressed the #EndSARS protesters, things would not have degenerated.

Oba Adeyemi made this known on Tuesday while speaking at the stakeholders meeting that was held at the House of Cheifs, the Parliament Building Agodi Secretariat Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.

Oba Adeyemi stressed that, if President Buhari had addressed the protesters at the appropriate time, the situation will not have gone out of hand, and the level of destruction witnessed would have been averted.

According to him, what we have witnessed today is the beginning of a phenomena, it is the failure of the authority to rise to the occasion that led to the loss of lives and destructions of properties that we witnessed the aftermath of the #ENDSARS protests.

He stressed that the youths have been denied of their rights, the peaceful protest of the youths have shown us the elders what we are lacking, they showed us through the protests that they are well organized, they have shown us comportment, they organized the protests to the amazement of all of us.
