House of Reps want Road safety officers to now carry guns

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) operatives will begin to bear firearms to curtail the excesses of road users in Nigeria.

The House of Representatives Committee on FRSC made the disclosure during the corps’ 2020 budget performance and 2021 budget defence, on Thursday in Abuja.

The Chairman, Akinfolarin Mayowa, explained that the 1992 Act of FRSC allowed the corps to carry guns, NAN reports.

Mayowa said the implementation had become necessary to ensure laws were obeyed and to allow the FRSC function effectively.

He disclosed that the committee would meet with Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and also write to President Muhammadu Buhari to implement the Act.

A member, Solomon Maren, added that the committee would discuss the matter with the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

The lawmaker said there were more risks on the roads, adding that the FRSC should now bear arms.

French bulldog elected as mayor of town in Kentucky

A small town in Kentucky has elected a French bulldog to be mayor. Wilbur, a 6-month-old puppy, was elected as mayor in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky on Thursday. Amy Noland, Wilbur’s owner, told NBC News that Wilbur’s campaign was based around ‘all of the negative media that’s out there surrounding America, and the election, and Covid-19. ‘I guess I wanted Wilbur to be something positive in the news,’ she said.

She mentioned that Wilbur is dealing with the stress of being the mayor quite well. ‘He’s done a lot of interviews locally,’ she said. ‘He’s had a lot of pets, a lot of belly scratches and a lot of ear rubs.’

Noland explained that the town ‘has never had an actual person or human as mayor,’ but the tradition came about in the late 1990s.

‘There was a man named Don Claire who thought it would be a great idea to elect some type of animal — not necessarily a canine — as mayor of town,’ she said. She called Wilbur ‘an anomaly’ because he is a purebred, but still considers him ‘so cute.’ Noland said she fosters kittens and cats, and the rest of the town is a thriving community of dog lovers. There have been five dog mayors of Rabbit Hash, which always coincides with the presidential election. ‘It’s not political at all,’ Noland said.

Depressed dad admits slitting throats of his two young children during lockdown

A depressed dad has admitted slitting the throats of his two young children during lockdown.

Nadarajah Nithiyakumar, 41, attacked his daughter Pavinya, aged 19 months, and three-year-old son Nigash at the family home in Aldborough Road North, Ilford, east London, on April 26.

The children's mother, named locally as Nisa, was in the shower at the time of the killings and alerted police.

Pavinya was pronounced dead at the scene while Nigash was rushed to hospital in Whitechapel but he also died.

Their father was taken to hospital for treatment for knife wounds.

Upon being discharged, the shop worker was charged with murdering the children.

In a police interview, Nithiyakumar accepted he had killed his daughter and son with a knife.

He said he had been depressed and while working in a shop, customers had "upset him".

He had thought about killing himself, but considered it would "ruin the children's lives and they would go off the rails", a court previously heard.

On Thursday, the defendant appeared before Mrs Justice Cutts at the Old Bailey.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter by diminished responsibility, which was accepted by the prosecution.

He will be sentenced later.

The children's mother wept in court as the defendant pleaded guilty to manslaughter but not guilty to murder.

She was supported by her sister, who was also tearful, and assisted by a Tamil interpreter.

Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson QC told the court psychiatrists had agreed the defendant suffered from a delusional disorder.

He said the case was "on any view of the very greatest seriousness" and had been considered with great care by the prosecution.

"It is clear from the unanimous opinion of very experienced psychiatrists that this defendant was at the time of these offences suffering from a delusional disorder," Mr Atkinson said.

"It was one from which he had suffered for some time, for the best part of 10 years. with very little indication and very little treatment."

The prosecutor said it had been considered by one expert "remarkable he was able to function for as long as he did".

Mr Atkinson added: "It was clear it was that disorder that led him to kill his children."

The court heard Nithiyakumar has no previous history of violence.

There is no other explanation for his behaviour "other than that which he accepted he did", the lawyer said.

Mr Atkinson said: "In those circumstances the Crown took the view it is appropriate to accept the plea of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility."

He asked the murder charges be left on the court file.

Mrs Justice Cutts agreed and adjourned the sentencing until December 10.

She said she will consider a hospital order and whether Nithiyakumar poses a danger to the public at that hearing.

The judge told Nithiyakumar: "I'm not going to sentence you today. I need further information from the doctors and to hear from them evidence in person before I can decide what the appropriate sentence should be."

Nithiyakumar was sent back to the medium secure mental health centre in east London where he has been treated.

In May, at the funeral of her children, heartbroken mum Nisa reportedly buried them in a shared coffin with their favourite teddy bear.

A small funeral was held amid the coronavirus lockdown, with a burial ceremony at Greenford Park Ceremony in west London.

Nisa reportedly told them: "Don’t worry daughter, your brother will now guide you. Look after each other."

Nisa, who was aged 35 at the time, left photographs of Nigish and Pavinya at their graveside taken when they were babies, as that's how she wants them to be remembered, reports said.

The children's uncle, Gopala Krishnan, told the Daily Mail at the time: "It was a very sad day. We are devastated by what happened and are still trying to come to terms with it. None of this makes any sense."

Following the dad's arrest, Detective chief inspector Vicky Tunstall said the "ending of these innocent young lives is extraordinarily tragic".

She added that the "effects of this crime are reverberating throughout the local community" but reassured people that there was "no cause for the community to be fearful or alarmed".

Woman sues textile company for advertising with daughter’s pictures

Nigeria not collecting enough tax revenue as it should -El-Rufai

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state has lamented that Nigeria is not collecting as much public revenue as it can.

He says that there is still much potential for growing Value Added Tax (VAT) and independent revenues of the Federal Government than what is being collected presently.

El-Rufai made this assertion in a keynote address he delivered at the 22nd Annual Tax Conference of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), held in Lagos on Thursday, with the theme: ” Taxation and Economic Competitiveness: Imperatives for National Development – a Nigerian Subnational Perspective”.

The governor who noted that there is considerable resistance to the hike in VAT from 5 percent to 7.5 percent, says Nigeria’s rates are still much lower than other neighboring countries.

This low rate of internal revenue collection according to him, depresses public finances, hampers the ability to deliver social goods, services and physical infrastructure. In addition, he opines that the low IGR in turn limits competitiveness, shrinking the ability to promote the sort of enabling environment and economic dynamism that can create jobs, expand public revenues and improve public welfare.

He also said that leakages in the tax system constitute a significant drain on government collection and utilization of revenue, adding that leakages may occur at the stage of revenue generation at the stage of assessment, where taxpayers are either not assessed at all or where the assessment is incorrectly done; at the stage of collection, where government revenue is not fully collected or where collection is not fully accounted for. or at the stage of utilization, where revenue collected is not accounted for adequately, or where allocated and disbursed, it is not prudently spent.

“With national tax revenues (oil and non-oil) still less than 7 percent of GDP, Nigeria is way behind the average of comparator nations of about 20% of GDP. As the world goes green, and crude oil loses its primacy as a leading source of energy, Nigeria must look inwards and compel every adult to pay tax as part of our citizenship obligation.

“In light of the situation that we are, we have very few options other than develop our capacity to collect to broaden the tax net, assess and collect taxes from individuals and companies to levels of our comparator nations – at least 20% of GDP within the shortest possible timeframe. As political leaders and tax professionals, we must put our collective heads together to ensure this national objective is achieved as soon as possible”.

The Kaduna state Governor also said that only a minority of Nigerians pay income tax, especially those whose taxes are deducted at source – including the formal sector employees, public servants and the like, lamenting that Voluntary compliance with the obligation to pay income tax remains a major challenge in the country.

Putin 'to quit as Russian president' in just weeks amid Parkinson's disease fears

Vladimir Putin is set to sensationally step down as Russia's President in a matter of weeks amid concerns he has Parkinson's disease, according to reports.

The politician and former officer of the KGB is being urged to quit the post he has held since 2012 by his girlfriend gymnast Alina Kabeva and two daughters, sources in Moscow have claimed.

A video showing the 68-year-old's legs shaking while he held tightly to a chair had raised suspicions about his health.

In the recent clip, a pen appears to twitch in his hand, while a cup was filled with painkillers, analysts told The Sun.

Ms Kabeva, 37, and Putin's daughters Maria Vorontsova, 35, Katerina Tikhonova, 34, have reportedly pleaded with the leader to quit, said critic Professor Valery Solovei, the newspaper reported.

"There is a family, it has a great influence on him. He intends to make public his handover plans in January," Prof Solovei said, adding a new President will be being "groomed".

It comes after legislation - put forward by Putin himself - was forced through this week to make him a lifelong senator, guaranteeing legal immunity.

Ex-High Court Registrar jailed four years for N80m fraud

A Federal High Court in Kaduna has jailed its former Registrar, Mr. Joseph Etefia Udoh, for four years for embezzling N80 million deposited in the court by a litigant.

The court also ordered the forfeiture of all assets seized from the convict and be sold by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to recover the looted cash.

It placed a lien on the convict’s retirement benefits and/or pension savings for any balance still outstanding against him.

The details of the conviction were contained in a statement by ICPC spokesperson Mrs. Azuka C. Ogugua.

The statement said: “Mr. Udoh and his wife, Grace Udoh, were, in December 2019, arraigned by ICPC before Justice P. H. Mallong on 12-count charge for alleged misappropriation of N80 million that had been deposited in the court by a litigant.

“The convict reportedly issued cheques in the name of his wife, also a staff of the Federal High Court of Justice, Abuja, and used the money to acquire properties in some major cities across Nigeria.

“Based on a plea bargain agreement entered with the convict, the charges levelled against him were amended to four counts and those against his wife dropped.”

The statement said Udoh admitted that he committed the fraud.

“When  the charges were read before the convict, he pleaded guilty to all of them,” the statement said.

Ladoja impeached for being ungrateful to Adedibu - Obasanjo

Former president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has said ex-Oyo State governor Rashidi Ladoja was impeached because he was ungrateful to his late political leader, Chief Lamidi Adedibu and Chief Yekinni Adeojo.

He spoke on Thursday in Ibadan, Oyo State, at the launch of Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala’s autobiography titled: “Amazing Grace”.

Obasanjo, who was the president at the time (2003 to 2007), and on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said Ladoja deliberately failed to accommodate the two political leaders in his government.

He said his attempts to reconcile Ladoja with the duo were unsuccessful, as Ladoja turned deaf ears to all entreaties. He said he (Ladoja), however, paid heavily for it.

Reacting to page 140 of the book, Obasanjo said: “You pointed out on page 140 that Ladoja picked up a quarrel with me for reason of a non-existent third term. I didn’t know that Ladoja picked up a quarrel that his becoming a governor was due to the grace of God and major contributions of two people- Yekinni

Adeojo from whom the party structure was wretched and Chief Adedibu who spearheaded the whole programme.

“I pleaded with him to make accommodation for both. He told me that they were all Ibadan people and they knew how to deal with themselves. He subsequently proved himself right as they dealt with themselves and he, Ladoja, came out the worse for it.

Alao-Akala who succeeded Ladoja in 2007 after serving him as deputy governor and acting governor when Ladoja was impeached, noted that he was a product of grace pencilled in the hands of the creator, who drew the picture of who he became today.

He added that God brought him from junctures where many who had great and greater hope of tomorrow fell.

He said the title of his autobiography, “Amazing Grace”, was not a happenstance, but rather an audacity of providence to bring him out of the dungeon of a hopeless tomorrow into the fulfilment of a destiny.

Kendall Jenner and younger sister Kylie stopped speaking to each other after they had a physical fight in Palm Springs, while on a summer break.

The 25-year-old model refused to talk to her 23-year-old sister for "about a month" after their fallout, a teaser for an upcoming episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians has shown.

The family's momager, Kris Jenner, asks Kendall in the trailer: "Have you talked to Kylie yet?"

Kendall, who is in the group chat along with Khloe and Kim Kardashian replied: "Nope. I've never heard from her, not even a little bit, which is rare."

Speaking to the camera in a confessional, Kendall admitted that this was the longest she had gone without speaking to Kylie.

She said: "Kylie and I got into a pretty big fight on our way home from Palm Springs.

"It's really weird, we haven't gone this long without speaking."

Khloe and Kim were not suffering fools gladly as they spoke about the fallout and how it could be sorted out.

Khloe snapped: "But I did send her a text and I did say, 'So how long are you not going to speak to Kendall for?', and she kind of snapped at me."

Diamond Platnumz’s sister ends her marriage after 3 months

Diamond Platnumz’s sister, Esma Platnumz, has broken up with her husband Msizwa Maulid after three months of marriage.

Esma took to Instagram on Thursday, November 5 to break the news to her followers.

In a Question and Answer (Q&A) session on her page, Esma, who married Msizwa on July 30, 2020, said

she has opted out of the relationship because her estranged husband was “hitting on every woman on his Instagram page”.

“[My marriage to Msizwa] was very bad. While with [my ex-husband] Petit Man, I couldn’t get offended when he was flirting with women on social media because he was famous.

So, his friendly attitude on Instagram was understandable. However, I got married to a man who was not famous. As a result of my marriage to him, he instantly became famous and chose to wallow in the fame. He would forget that he is someone’s husband and take pleasure in entertaining other women in his inbox,” said Esma.

Esma Platnumz, a mother of two children from her previous marriage, got married to Msizwa as Msizwa’s third wife.

Explaining why she decided to get married to a polygamous man, Esma said: “I wanted to learn a lesson. For you to learn some lessons in life, you must offer yourself as sacrifice.”
