Lekki shooting: Soldiers were attacked at Lekki Tollgate – Army Commander

The commanding officer of 65 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Salisu Bello, said contrary to widespread reports, soldiers did not shoot #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza on October 20, 2020, instead, it was his men that were attacked.

Bello made this assertion in his statement on oath filed before the Lagos State judicial panel probing the Lekki shooting and cases of police brutality.

Security operatives believed to be soldiers had on the 20th of October 2020, brutally opened fire on peaceful #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate, this led to the death of some of the protesters with several others injured.

The Nigerian Army had initially denied reports of being at the scene of the incident but later admitted that the Lagos State Government invited them to ensure peace and calm on the streets amid the protests.

The Army also vehemently denied using live ammunition on the #EndSARS protesters who gathered at the tollgate, adding that soldiers did not take any dead bodies away, contrary to reports by eyewitnesses.

Bello while giving a statement at the panel on Saturday, denied the report that soldiers killed some protesters at the tollgate, but said that the protesters were all happy to see the officers.

In a report by The Punch, the commander said that he personally offered protesters water and drinks, while persuading them to go home.

According to Bello, while he was moving towards the Lekki-Ajah Expressway around 6.45 pm, he heard gunshots before the tollgate and later realised that the crowd had turned from peaceful protesters to a mob.

He said: “On getting to the tollgate, I persuaded the crowd to go home and observe the 24-hour curfew declared by the state government.

“But surprisingly, the hoodlums continued throwing stones, bottles and other dangerous objects at us and were burning tyre. I again fired some blank ammunition upward to scare the hoodlums away.

“But some protesters who were still at the tollgate sitting down quietly were given water and drinks by me while pleading with them to go home.

“We did not fire at the protesters.

“Blank ammunition were fired upward to scare the hoodlums from the crowd. Nobody was shot dead at the Lekki tollgate, there was no massacre as claimed.

“The claim that the military took away dead bodies was not true. The protesters were happy to see us as indicated in some of the video clips of 20th October 2020.”

Brig-Gen Francis Omata, Commander, 81 Division Garrison, VI, while telling his side of the event said: “On arrival at the tollgate at about 7.30 pm, I met a rowdy situation.

“I also met the Commanding Officer, 65 Battalion (Bello), who briefed me on the situation.

“He briefed me that he met a hostile crowd, hoodlums mixed with the protesters, who were chanting and throwing stones at them. I was able to disperse the crowd by firing blank ammunition into the air.

“At this point, stones and sticks were being thrown at us. Then I moved to a safe area and briefed General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Maj Gen Godwin Ahamefuna Umelo by phone.

“The General Officer Commanding directed me to pacify the hostile crowd and move the troops back to base. However, the crowd still continued chanting #EndSARS. I then instructed the troops to withdraw to base.”

However, the absence of the two youth representatives serving on the panel stalled Saturday, November 7, proceedings and the Army officers could not testify.

Trump will never concede, he will break things: Niece Mary Trump

This is how the most colossal and fragile ego on the planet deals with losing the US election: he does not deal with it at all.

My uncle’s speech late on election night wasn’t just entirely mendacious from beginning to end. It was also deeply dangerous. It’s one thing for random Republicans to call a legitimate election into question, but this was the head of the government. The consequences of that action should not be underestimated.

This is what Donald’s going to do: he’s not going to concede, although who cares. What’s worse is he’s not going to engage in the normal activities that guarantee a peaceful transition. All he’s got now is breaking stuff, and he’s going to do that with a vengeance. I’ve always known how cruel he can be. Shortly after the 2016 election, when I’d see him being particularly cruel, I would think about how he treated my father [Fred Trump Jr, Donald’s older brother, who died of alcoholism at 43]. He took away our family health insurance after his father, my grandfather, died – this was when my nephew needed round-the-clock nursing care, which we then couldn’t afford. That is the kind of man he is.

He’ll be having meltdowns upon meltdowns right now. He has never been in a situation like this before. What’s interesting is that Donald has never won anything legitimately in his entire life, but because he has been so enabled by people along the way, he has never lost anything either. He’s the kind of person who thinks that even if you steal and cheat to win, you deserve to win.

But there is some poetic justice here because he has been cheating for months. Now his tactics are coming back to bite him. He told Republicans not to vote by mail and they didn’t, but the result is he has been experiencing this slow drip-drip of disaster over the past few days. Oh, you have these huge margins! Now your margins are shrinking. Oh, Joe Biden’s ahead. Now his margins are growing. It must have been like slow torture, but he set up this failure for himself.

The fact that the Republicans have done better than expected in Congress and the Senate will have made him extraordinarily angry. It means that people were voting against Donald Trump in this election, but not necessarily against this party. That will have added so much salt to his narcissistic wounds.

Also, his supporters are going away. From what I understand, the thing that really ruined his election night was Fox News – his safe zone – calling Arizona days earlier than everyone else. That burst his bubble. Then Twitter was flagging all his posts and deleting them, and other more legitimate news outlets were cutting away from his speeches. But this begs the question: why weren’t they doing this a month ago, or even four years ago, before the last election? It’s good this is happening now because maybe the next two-and-half months won’t be the nightmare we expect, but it’s too late.

I worry about what Donald’s going to do in that time to lash out. He will go as far as he can to delegitimise the new administration, then he’ll pass pardons that will demoralise us, and sign a flurry of executive orders. Remember, he will also still be in charge of the US response to the pandemic. There could be a million Americans dead by then under his watch.

After January, things look bleak for Donald. He has more than $400m of debt coming in the next four years. Why at this point would his lenders cut him any slack? He has never paid anyone back. His businesses are in the tank. He has destroyed his brand.

He is going to be a factor in courtrooms in New York City more than he’s going to be a factor in politics, I think. His secretary of defence has already submitted his resignation, and I think there will be more of that. The Republicans might need him for the January run-offs in Georgia, but he could be considered a liability. If he’s acting like a crazy person, senators are going to keep their distance. People will move away from him if there’s nothing in it for them any more.

It’s not like he has any friends, anyway. It’s grim for him. Donald Jr, Ivanka and Eric also know their relationship with their father is both conditional and transactional. I have been saying since 2016 that I was going to have to change my name. I think they’re going to have to change theirs.

As for saying he’ll run in 2024, that’s just a face-saving exercise. It’s a way of distracting him from the fact that he’s probably going to prison. But the worst thing Donald’s looking at isn’t financial difficulties or the prospect of jail. It’s becoming irrelevant. I don’t think he would ever recover from that.

Joe Biden reveals his first task as President

U.S. President-elect, Joe Biden, says his first task in office is to get the coronavirus pandemic under control.

Biden stated this in his acceptance speech, which he delivered before a crowd of supporters in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday night.

“Our work begins with getting Covid-19 under control.

“We cannot repair the economy, restore our vitality, or relish life’s most precious moments: hugging a grandchild, our children, birthdays, weddings, graduations, all the moments that matter most to us, until we get it under control.

“On Monday, I will name a group of leading scientists and experts as transition advisers to help take the Biden-Harris Covid-19 plan and convert it into actual blue print that will start on Jan. 20, 2021.

“That plan will be built on bedrock science. It will be constructed out of compassion, empathy and concern.

“I will spare no effort, none, or any commitment to turn around this pandemic,” he said.

Joined by the Vice President-elect, Ms Kamala Harris, and their families, Biden said with the campaigns over, it was time for unity to build back better.

“The Bible tells us that to everything there is a season — a time to build, a time to reap, a time to sow. And a time to heal.

“This is the time to heal in America. It’s time to put away the harsh rhetoric. To lower the temperature, to see each other again, to listen to each other again.

“The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: ‘I will be a President for all Americans — whether you voted for me or not’.

“I will keep the faith that you have placed in me. I pledge to be a President who seeks not to divide, but to unify,” Biden added.

The president-elect said he believed part of the mandate from American voters is for all elected public officers to cooperate in their interest.

Stating that this is the choice he had made, he called on members of Congress, regardless of party, to make the choice with him.

Biden acknowledged the support of the African American community, which he said stood up for him when his campaign was faltering.

“They always have my back, and I’ll have theirs,” he said.

Earlier, Harris thanked the American people for their confidence in the Biden candidacy, saluting their courage and resilience in the last four years.

“For four years, you marched and organised for equality and justice, for our lives and for our planet and then you voted!

“And you delivered a clear message. You chose hope and unity, decency, science, and yes, truth!

“You chose Joe Biden as the next president of the United States of America!,” the Vice President-elect said, describing Biden as a “healer, uniter, tested and steady hand.

According to her, the former Vice president is a “person whose own experience of loss gives him a sense of purpose that will help us as a nation reclaim our own sense of purpose”.

The Lord gave me a prophesy last year or so, that Trump would not be re-elected.

You stood up for me, I’ll have your back, Biden assures African-Americans

United States of America President-elect, Joe Biden, has assured black voters of his support.

He said this in his victory speech on Sunday (Nigerian time).

Biden appreciated the voters for backing him in major cities.

Black voters helped Biden emerged victorious in states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

“And especially for those moments when this campaign was at its lowest — the African American community stood up again for me. They always have my back, and I’ll have yours,” he said.

When assuring his support for African-Americans, he repeatedly slammed his fist on the podium and the crowd erupted in cheers.

According to Africa Business Insider, black voters, particularly in key cities such as Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia, were a critical factor in Biden’s success.

Exit polls revealed that 87 per cent of Black voters backed Biden compared to just 12 per cent for President Donald Trump, though they also indicated that Trump had improved his standing among Black voters compared to 2016.

Biden of the Democratic Party won Tuesday’s presidential election to become the 46th elected President of the United States.

We’re hungry – Police officers cry out over unpaid six months’ salaries

The newly recruited constables into the Nigeria Police Force have cried out over the non-payment of their six months salaries.

The new constables who passed out of police colleges in April, told Daily Post exclusively that they are yet to be paid salaries since they joined the force.

Some of the policemen said they have been reporting at their respective duty posts without pay since April.

Pleading anonymity, the police recruits said they expected to be paid in October after going to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for IPPS documentation in September.

They lamented that other police officers were paid on Monday, but they were ignored.

“We are hungry. We have been working since April without any salary. Our commanders won’t stop posting us out for duties, despite the fact that we are not paid.

“Many of us till depend on our parents and relatives to feed ourselves. It’s been very tough. Many of us have borrowed money from people while also owing food vendors around our areas. Most times we wait by the roadside to get free ride, when we don’t have money for transport fare. This is not how officers of the law should be treated.

“Don’t forget that one of us was killed by armed robbers in Kogi on June 4. That’s the risk in this job, yet our welfare is not important to the authorities. How can anybody work for six months without being paid?

“If this had happened in the civil service, you would have seen them on the street with placards. But, we are voiceless. We dare not talk about it outside. We should be suffering and smiling. It doesn’t happen like that in other agencies,” some of the policemen told Daily Post in an exclusive interview.

The police constables appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to come to their rescue and save them from being dependent on others for daily bread.

Meanwhile, efforts to get the reactions of the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, was not successful.

Mba did not answer phone calls made to his line throughout Saturday, November 7.

Also, a text message sent to him is yet to be replied since yesterday.

But, a senior police officer confirmed to our correspondent that new constables are being subjected to all forms of financial embarrassment as a result of the non-payment of their wages.

The police officer said he was in support of the calls by the End SARS protesters to reform the Nigeria Police Force.

He expressed displeasure that the protest was hijacked by hoodlums, saying the fight was also for the freedom of the ranks and files in the job.

“These young cops were not paid since six months ago. Is that normal? We’re suffering in this job, but we can’t speak up. Look at our barracks and compare that to what obtains elsewhere. That’s why I’m so pained that the End SARS protest was hijacked by hoodlums.

“Those guys were also fighting for our freedom too, especially the ranks and files. The reform they are calling for will address all these anomalies in the force,” the Police Inspector said anonymously.
