Breakdown of the fat pension received by Lagos state ex-governors

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu struck the right chord today when he announced he would submit a law very soon abolishing what critics have called the obscene pension package of former Lagos governors.

He said the move was necessary as state resources are dwindling.

The governor may also be doing so as the destruction of state assets by hoodlums in October will take many billions of naira to replace.

The pension law was passed by rubber stamp state assembly in 2007 as former Governor Bola Tinubu was ending his second term tenure.

Titled: The Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension) Law No 11 Official Gazette of Lagos State, 2007, the law has been copied by other states.

But states such as Zamfara and Bauchi have cancelled their own versions of the law.

And a court of law had ruled that that the law was illegal, as it is not in the constitution.

Beside, the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC said the governors are only entitled to 300 percent severance pay, as provided in Certain Political Office Holders and Judicial Officers Remuneration Act.

Under that act, former governors,, like lawmakers are entitled to 300% of their basic salary of N2, 223,705 amounting to N6,671,115 as severance pay.

The Lagos pension law for ex-governors states that former governors of the state are entitled to a house each in any location of their choice in Lagos and Abuja.

Section 2 of the law states that, “One residential house each for the governor and the deputy governor at any location of their choice in Lagos State and one residential house in the Federal Capital Territory for the governor on two consecutive terms.”

This means Akinwunmi Ambode, a one-termer is not entitled to a house in Abuja, but he is entitled to one in Lagos.

Only Tinubu and Fashola qualify for two houses, one in Lagos and the other in Abuja.

The law also provides for six new cars every three years, 100 per cent of the basic salary of the serving governor (N7.7m per annum), as well as free health care for himself and members of his family.

The law also says former governors will be entitled to:

*Furniture allowance, which is 300 per cent of their annual basic salary (N23.3m);

*House maintenance allowance, which is 10 per cent of basic salary (N778, 296);

*Utility allowance, which is 20 per cent of the salary (N1.5m)

*Car maintenance allowance, which is 30 per cent of the annual basic salary (N2.3m).

*Entertainment allowance, which is 10 per cent of the basic salary (N778, 296)

*A personal assistant, who will earn 25 per cent of the governor’s annual basic salary (N1.9m).

According to the law, the former governor will also be entitled eight policemen and two officials of the Department of State Services for life. The state will bear the expenses.

FRSC impounds vehicle loaded with alleged stolen goats in Oyo

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) RS11.35, Egbeda Unit Command in Oyo State, has impounded a Sienna car with registration number KRD 815 GN loaded with allegedly stolen goats.

The FRSC Unit Commander in Egbeda, Assistant Corps Commander, Akeem Kareem, disclosed this while showing the goats and the vehicle to journalists on Tuesday in Ibadan.

Kareem said that the Sienna car loaded with the goats was abandoned on the road in front of FRSC office in Egbeda around 4.00 am when it had a burst tyre, and the driver of the car ran away.

The unit commander said that the FRSC officials met the car engine still running when they arrived at the scene and the goats inside the car were tied in the mouth with tape.

He said the vehicle was eventually removed from the road to prevent obstruction and road crashes.

Kareem said the FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mrs Uche Chukwurah, had instructed him to hand over the goats and the vehicle to the police for further investigation since statutorily, FRSC could not investigate the matter.

“Road safety is everybody’s business.

“And, because of the insecurity in the country, anything we see on the road, we pick interest and make sure it is corrected before it gets out of control,’’ he said.

Kareem urged the public to always alert FRSC whenever they noticed any obstruction on the road in order to avoid avoidable accidents.

I think I’m cursed when it comes to men — BBNaija’s Ifu Ennada

Due to her past unpleasant relationship experiences, Big Brother Naija star, Ifu Ennada has stated that she may be cursed when it comes to men.

The reality TV star and entrepreneur, in a series of Instagram stories tagged “Me and Useless Men”, lamented about how unlucky she has been in relationships.

She recounted an experience with a man she almost dated back in 2018. According to her, she found out he was struggling to pay a debt of N150k when she paid him a visit.

Ifu Ennada revealed she gave the man N200k to pay what he owes and buy food for himself, as he was starving and suffering while giving people the impression that he lived well.

“I think I’m cursed when it comes to men… A lot of people might not believe this, but I never ask men for money”, she began.

“When I’m in a relationship I give to the man instead and help build him. I remember one fool I almost dated in 2018, I went to see him, saw that he had gotten into a 150k debt while trying to impress and I gave him 200k to settle the debt and buy some food for himself. Dude was literally starving and people didn’t know because he was living on past glory, so people didn’t know he was suffering.”

According to her, one of her ex-lovers resurfaced in her life, hence the posts. “Writing this, I’m just thinking of all the men I’ve been involved with in the past. There’s none of them I didn’t add value to, even the one with an Influential father- the Idiot knows himself. Maybe, I’m like Paul who isn’t destined to be married.

I’m not heartbroken o, ah! As a matter of fact, I’m glad to be ending the year single even though I started it in a relationship. I’m just expressing myself because an Idiot I had forgotten suddenly resurfaced in my life a few days ago and just reminded me of how much of an ingrate he and other men in my life were to me.”

Continuing she wrote “PS: No, I don’t have a character problem, I’m legit the sweetest girl you’ll ever know as a friend of Lover.

I just somehow attract Grade A Douchebags. I’m going to be 30 in 2yrs and I know my mother is getting ready to present me with “where is the husband talk” Someone should better tell my mother I have other plans.

Let me just make this money first and have sustainable streams of income. I will live my life to the fullest and on my own terms without making men have any significant bearing in my life”, she declared.

South West Ministers visit Tinubu over destruction of TVC, The Nation, others in Lagos

Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari, has led South-West ministers on a sympathy visit to the All Progressives Congress’ National Leader, Bola Tinubu, on Sunday.

They visited the APC leader at his Bourdillon residence in Lagos.

It was gathered that they visited the former Governor of Lagos State over the destruction of his properties by suspected hoodlums.

Among the ministers that visited are Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola; Minister of State, Health, Olorunnimbe Mamora; Minister of Information, Lai Mohammad, and Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare.

They were also joined by the Governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi.

Hoodlums had massively looted shops and set fire to several public and private properties, including Television Continental and The Nation newspaper, both of which have been linked to Tinubu.

This followed the shootings of some protesters at the Lekki toll gate plaza by soldiers on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.

Some of the protesters had alleged that Tinubu owned the tollgate plaza where the soldiers shot at them.

But the politician denied making money from the plaza, adding that the rumour of his ownership was politically-motivated.

He said he got prior information that facilities of both The Nation newspaper and TVC were going to be attacked by “certain malevolent elements” hiding under #EndSARS protests, yet he did not send soldiers or policemen there to prevent the attack, because he didn’t want anyone to die.

“There is no rationale that can adequately explain why I would order soldiers to repel peaceful protesters from the tollgate, where I have no financial interest, yet, choose to do nothing to protect my investments in The Nation and TVC,” Tinubu said.

Worldwide coronavirus cases pass 50million with 1.25m deaths

The worldwide total of coronavirus cases has passed 50million, with Europe once again the epicentre of the pandemic and the United States now seeing more than 100,000 new infections per day.

Europe accounted for more than half of the 3.8million new cases in the last week, with massive new spikes in countries including France, which saw 373,000 cases in seven days.

The US is now approaching 10million cases after its worst spike in infections so far and its death toll is above 236,000 as president-elect Joe Biden prepares to take office in January.

Meanwhile, the global death toll passed 1.25million on Sunday with more than 50,000 fatalities in the last week alone.

After the pandemic erupted in China late last year, the world reached a million cases in early April, ten million in late June and 25million at the end of August.

The global figure has since doubled to 50million in the space of only ten weeks after Europe suffered a massive resurgence which has forced it back into lockdown.

Daily deaths have climbed back into the hundreds in Britain, Spain, France and Italy, which have all piled up record numbers of infections in recent weeks.

More than 157,000 people have tested positive in Britain in the last week, while 2,300 have died and 10,400 were admitted to hospital.

Peru’s parliament sacks President Vizcarra over corruption

Peru’s Congress voted to oust President Martín Vizcarra on Monday in an impeachment trial over corruption allegations, the second effort by lawmakers to remove him in a matter of months.

The opposition-dominated Congress put forward 105 votes to oust the centrist leader over accusations that as a governor he accepted bribes from companies that won public works contracts.

The 105 votes far exceeded the 87-vote threshold out of 130 needed to remove him from office. There were 19 votes against his ouster and four abstentions.

Vizcarra has rejected the corruption allegations as “baseless” and “false.”

He warned of “unpredictable consequences” earlier on Monday if lawmakers impeached him just months ahead of the April 11 presidential election, in which he is not eligible to run.

His removal from office plunges the world’s No. 2 copper producer into political turmoil as it looks to recover from an economic recession brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Vizcarra, 57, lacked a party in the fragmented Congress, and had a tense relationship with lawmakers, with whom he frequently locked horns over his anti-graft agenda.

He dissolved Congress last year after a long-running standoff, a move that prompted criticism by right-wing lawmakers.

Vizcarra survived a first ouster attempt in September in a separate impeachment trial over alleged links to a case of irregular government contracts with a little-known singer. Only 32 in the chamber voted in favor of his ouster in that vote.

In November, however, lawmakers voted to move forward with a new impeachment trial over accusations that Vizcarra accepted bribes from companies that won public works contracts when he was the governor of the southern region of Moquegua..

Vizcarra’s removal could usher in a period of political tensions and uncertainty in the months leading up to elections as Peru is already strained by economic instability, analysts said.

“Political turmoil related to the latest impeachment process and corruption allegations add to deep distrust of the political class ahead of upcoming elections,” international firm Eurasia said in a report earlier on Monday.

The head of Congress, Manuel Merino, an agronomist and businessman who is a member of minority party Popular Action, is expected to assume the presidency on Tuesday and will remain in office until the end of July 2021, when Vizcarra’s term was due to expire

Lekki shooting: DJ Switch surfaces in Canada after death threats

DJ Switch who quietly left Nigeria, following death threats, has surfaced in Canada, speaking with parliamentarians about the event of 20 October in Lagos.

According to reports, DJ Switch, whose real name is Obianuju Catherine Udeh, told a parliamentary committee that the soldiers who shot at #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate, said they were acting on orders from above.

She relived the shooting with members of the Sub-committee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development.

The entertainer streamed the shooting live and at a stage the battery of her phone ran down.

She said that the military opened fire on the protesters after creating a three-formation line, Sahara Reporters said.

She said soldiers shot at them, contrary to the claims of the military that blank bullets were used.

She told the Canadian parliament that she counted no fewer than seven persons shot.

That figure is fewer than the 15 she claimed the army killed and took the bodies away.

“On October 20, 2020, we had spirited Nigerians there united with one goal against police brutality against bad governance.

“What started out as a protest against police brutality with the unit called SARS unfortunately degenerated into something I still find hard to reconcile within my heart.

“We got information that the government wants to see me and six other people and I remember saying to them that we have no leader and if the government wanted to speak with us, he should kindly come to the toll gate and address Nigerians because we have been out for eleven days.”

She added that the first gunshot was heard from behind, adding that it was chaotic as people were running in different directions so as not to be hit by bullet until it was announced that protesters should lie on the floor.

“As we didn’t know where the gunshots were coming from and what they are about and then the lights went off.

“I remembered the military came in first, they stopped shooting at some point and I walked up to one of them and I asked why he was shooting at us and he said he had express order from above, and I was coming too close to him and if I come too close, it would be considered an attack on him and he would have to shoot.

“It didn’t take another ten minutes, the shooting started again. I remember seeing seven people that have been shot down and we were telling people on my live Instagram to help us call an ambulance.”

She also added that after the military were ordered to stop shooting by a senior military officer, the police were drafted to the toll gate and continued shooting at protesters, who were still at the protest ground.

She revealed that she has been in hiding following threats to her live by unknown people.

She said she initially thought it was an empty threat until she received a call that the military were trying to arrest her.

“I have been on the move because they have been after my life. The first threat came in, I thought it was a joke, I sincerely thought it was a joke.

“Just as I was leaving, I got a phone call that I should leave the vicinity because there are military men at the hospital.

“I had to abandon my home, I moved from people’s home, and then just to get out of Nigeria. I am still travelling, and I am not done with my trip,” DJ Switch said..

Nigerian rapper, Folarin Falana also known as Falz has slammed President Muhammadu Buhari over his congratulatory message to Joe Biden, the projected winner of the US Presidential election.

Buhari in his congratulatory message had said, “Respect for the will of the people is the very reason why democracy remains the best form of government, despite its limitations from one polity to another, and from one society to another.”

But Falz queried Buhari’s motive on the statement, demanding to know who wrote the congratulatory message.

He claimed that the President knows nothing about respecting the will of the people.

In a tweet on his handle, Falz asked, Who typed this? Because you clearly know nothing about respecting the will of the people.”
