Hunger is killing us, Ekiti retired military officers cries out

Military officers of Ekiti State origin, who retired voluntarily after the civil war of 1967-1970, have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to begin payment of their pensions, to rescue them from poverty and untimely death.

They lamented that no fewer than 60 of their members out of the 240 had died because they could not afford proper feeding and medical treatment due to unpaid entitlements.

Addressing reporters in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, the ex-officers under the aegis of Voluntarily Retired Military Officers, 1978-1979, Ekiti chapter, urged President Buhari to honour his 2015 pledge to extend payment of pensions to all retired officers who partook in the civil war.

The Publicity Secretary of the ex-officers, Alhaji Bello Oseni, hailed the President for remembering them in 2015 upon assumption of power, after 36 years of neglect by successive military and democratic governments.

He said the President, having been elected in 2015, summoned members to Abuja and instructed the Military Pensions Board to verify their documents, after which they were certified to be legitimate military officers.

“But since then, we have not heard anything. We commend President Buhari for remembering us after four decades of neglect, but we appeal that this pledge should be implemented in due course.

“We started this struggle with 240 members, today we are 180 with about 70 of us nursing severe ailments and only praying to get over them.

“We were at the battlefield for over three years. We fought for the unity of this nation. We kept Nigeria one and we deserve to be taken care of.

“We have no regret serving our fatherland, but we are surprised that those who fought to keep Nigeria one and rescue it from disintegration can be treated this way. Helping us at this stage will send a signal of patriotism to Nigerians, because all we did was out of patriotic spirit.

“But we believe in the integrity of President Buhari. He is a retired military officer with human face. He knows what it means for somebody to fight a civil war. He understands the language of war.

“It was President Buhari’s passionate spirit that spurred him to invite us to Abuja in 2015 as a honour. We plead that he fulfils his promises to us, so that we can reap the fruits of our labour.

“We pray that Nigeria remains one so that the labour of our founding fathers and war heroes, including us, will not be in vain,” Oseni said.

Italian tech millionaire arrested after he allegedly tied up a teenager and r.a.p.e.d her brutally during drugs-fueled party at his penthouse

An Italian tech millionaire has been arrested after he allegedly drugged, tied up and r3ped an 18-year-old woman at a party.

Alberto Genovese, 43, was arrested after the woman claimed that he had drugged her, tied her ankles and wrists to a bed and r3ped her at one of his party's last month.

The event, which was hosted at the millionaire's luxury penthouse in Milan, allegedly featured lines of cocaine handed to guests on plates and loud music.

The alleged victim was 'clearly unconscious' and at times she 'seemed like a lifeless body' who was being abused as if she was 'a rag doll', alleged an investigating judge.

It has emerged that police had already knocked on Genovese's door twice after his neighbour Roberto Bolle, Italy's top male ballet star at La Scala opera house, complained about the noise coming from the wild party upstairs.

It is claimed that a bouncer stood guard at Genovese's bedroom, stopping a friend of the alleged victim from entering.

The assault was allegedly filmed by the millionaire, who made more than €100 million in 2014 after selling Facile, a car insurance website he created.

'Genovese acted regardless of the consent of the victim, who was clearly unconscious for about half of the 24 hours spent with him,' alleged investigating Tommaso Perna in an arrest warrant.

'So much so that in some situations she seemed a lifeless body, moved, removed, positioned, laid down, turned over, abused, as if it was that a rag doll.

'When the victim regained a glimmer of lucidity, tried to resist and begged her assailant to stop, he did not listen and continued his attack.'

He added that the suspect showed 'absolute contempt for the value of human life, especially that of women'.

After studying the alleged victim's wounds, a doctor, according to The Times, wrote: 'I've never seen anything so cruel'.

Another 18-year-old woman has since come forward to claim that she was raped by Genovese in Ibiza last summer after taking drugs. The woman allegedly passed out and woke up feeling pain as if she had been tied up, the warrant says according to local media.

Genovese's lawyers reportedly said 'there are many unknown elements' in the case, adding 'it appears more complex than it seems'.

The millionaire told police he had lost control whilst on drugs, and said: 'My perception of that evening with the girl was that we were in love and having a beautiful evening together'.

Investigating judge Perna alleged in the arrest warrant: 'Although Genovese made use of narcotic substances, he was always very lucid... administering a new narcotic substance to her every time he understood that she was waking up.

'It therefore seems unlikely to argue that he had no perception of reality, or that, in his imagination, he had spent a beautiful evening with his beloved.'

After 10 years, Man U LIKELY to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back

Manchester United have reportedly made their interest in Cristiano Ronaldo known to Juventus and are planning a bid to bring the Portuguese back to Old Trafford more than 10 years after he left to join Real Madrid in a then-world record transfer in 2009.

According to Fox Sports, United have spoken to Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, during a meeting in Porto and made their position clear: if Ronaldo become available, the Old Trafford board would so everything to sign him.

Any deal would depend on Ronaldo's willingness to return to the Premier League. If the Juventus forward decides on a new challenge next summer, a year before his contract at the Allianz Arena expires, Juventus will not stand in his way.

The Serie A club have their own considerations, not least the need to reduce a massive wage bill. There have been suggestions that Juventus have been pondering an attempt to cash in on the super star next summer while they still can in an attempt to recoup some of the initial €100m they paid to Real Madrid for the player.

Any suitors would probably be invited to start the bidding somewhere in the region of half that fee given that Ronaldo is 35. United are likely to face stiff competition for the Portuguese from PSG if he is made available.

Ronaldo famously joined Manchester United in 2003 after appearing against them in a friendly for Sporting Lisbon. Under the tutelage of Alex Ferguson the Portuguese rose to become one of the finest players in the modern game and Real Madrid shelled out a record €94m for his services in 2009. After smashing Real's scoring records and helping the club to two Ligas, two Copas and four Champions League titles, Ronaldo moved to Juventus in 2018.

51-year old woman gives birth to her granddaughter after acting as a surrogate for her daughter

A 51-year-old woman has given birth to her granddaughter after serving as surrogate for her daughter and son-in-law.

Julie Loving underwent an emergency C-section to safely deliver Briar Juliette Lockwood, her first grandchild, at a hospital in Illinois on November 2.

Her daughter Breanna Lockwood and her husband Aaron, who are the baby girl's biological parents, were by her side.

Breanna, who has chronicled the couple's struggles with fertility, said: 'My mom was an absolute rockstar through a difficult delivery. The sacrifices she took to bring this little slice of heaven into our world takes my breath away.'

Mom-of-two Julie, who had already been through menopause, said earlier this year that 'health-wise she felt she could do it'. She has completed multiple Boston marathons and is 'super into heath and fitness', her daughter has said.

In the US, surrogacy costs around $100,000, with laws varying between states.

Breanna, from Chicago, and her husband of four years Aron, 28, had been trying to get pregnant since they got married.

The couple have endured seven surgical procedures, three rounds of harvesting eggs and four failed embryo transfers, as well as a single and twin miscarriage and an ectopic pregnancy.

Breanna has shared their painful struggle on her Instagram and Facebook pages over the past year, admitting in a recent post: 'The trials and tribulations of infertility was undoubtedly the hardest venture we have had to face in our lives.'

Then in June she posted a photo of Julie at 17 weeks pregnant, cradling her baby bump while she and Aaron hold up the ultrasound and an announcement board.

She wrote: 'My beautiful mama is carrying her first grandchild, Aaron and my biological child, as a gestational carrier!'

A gestational carrier is a woman who carries someone else's biological child without donating any of her own eggs or DNA.

Sharing pictures of baby Briar online Breanna said: 'Holding my daughter in my arms my heart is bursting.

'The feeling of how I would do absolutely anything needed for this child is radiating through me when I look at her, and reflects back on what my mom did for me. ⁣'

Toke Makinwa's ex-husband Maje Ayida awarded N1m in damages over his mentions in ''On Becoming''

A Lagos State High Court at Tafawa Balewa Square presided by Hon. Justice Ogunjobi on 12th November 2020 has ruled in favour of fitness entrepreneur Maje Ayida over defamation lawsuit against Toke Makinwa.

The court in its judgment held that after careful consideration of the evidence before the court, it finds only the contents of page 54 line 11-16 and page 83, Line 1 of the 1st defendants’ book as Defamatory.

The Court thereafter granted damages of the sum of 500,000 Naira each to be paid by the 1st and 2nd defendants to any charity organization of the claimant’s choice. The court also granted an injunction preventing the defendants from producing copies of its book with the defamatory words in pages 54 and 83.

The court also gave the defendant 30 days from its judgment to delete and remove said defamatory words from unsold copies of the book in the defendant’s custody.

Recall  that in 2017, reports surfaced online saying Ayida’s lawyers had written a ‘letter of demand’ to Makinwa asking her to stop the promotion and sale of the memoir titled On Becoming.

Maje’s lawsuit also mentioned that the book contained defamatory words, was misleading and had subjected their him to public ridicule. Ayida, in the letter, asked Makinwa, among other things, to withdraw the book from circulation, recall all copies distributed and hand them over to him for destruction.

The letter also said a failure by the media personality to take back the words said in the book, and give a full-page apologizing to Maje Ayida in three national newspapers will lead to the commencement of legal action.

FIFA Vice-President, Greg Clarke resigns

Former Football Association (FA) chairman Greg Clarke has resigned his role as FIFA Vice-President. His resignation comes two days after he left the FA over a series of offensive remarks.

The 63-year-old also stepped down from his position with FIFA after a telephone call with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin on Thursday morning.

Clarke resigned as FA chairman earlier this week in the wake of referring to black footballers as ‘coloured’ while giving evidence to MPs; Clarke apologized for using the term and added his ‘unacceptable words’ were a ‘disservice to our game’

Clarke has faced so much criticism after his comments.

UEFA in a statement on Thursday announced that president Aleksander Ceferin and Greg Clarke agreed he should step down with immediate effect from his position as a UEFA representative on the FIFA Council.

Similarly, England coach, Gareth Southgate said on Wednesday that Clarke had had “no alternative” but to step down from the FA, while former England Women captain Casey Stoney added the comments were “completely unacceptable”.

Peter McCormick was appointed by the FA as interim chairman following Clarke’s departure as they set to appoint a new chairman by the end of March.

Man ‘kills, buries’ lover in Lagos

Operatives of the Lagos Police Command have arrested 29-year-old, Segun Titilayo, for allegedly killing, burying his lover.

The deceased, Oritoke Manni, 26, who was a bar attendant at KC Hotel, Apakin Town, Lekki, was declared missing last month after she was said to have gone to Titilayo’s house.

The Nation gathered that Titilayo allegedly called Manni to come to his 29, Otulu Town, Lekki residence but never returned.

Following her disappearance, a missing person report was made at the police and a search commenced with no trace of her until November 7 when her decomposing body was excavated by a Caterpillar at Adron Homes construction site in Otulu.

In the course of the investigation, it was learnt that police found out Titilayo went to the deceased’s place of work to ask after her, a move being considered as a possible cover-up for the alleged crime.

Confirming the suspect’s arrest Thursday, spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi said an engineer, David Adegbago, of Adron Homes and Properties, reported to the Police Station at Akodo that while the company was excavating its site at Otolu Town, their Caterpillar exhumed a decomposing corpse.

“The police detectives swung into action and the corpse was identified by the staff of the hotel to be Oritoke’s. The corpse was evacuated to a public morgue for autopsy.

“The police placed a manhunt on the suspect and he was arrested. He is being detained at the SCID Panti and giving useful information to help the police investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has condemned the crime and directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID, DCP Yetunde Longe to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter.

“CP Hakeem Odumosu cautions the youths, especially ladies, against keeping unscrupulous and destructive friends. He also encourages Lagosians to promote moral values and shun crimes and criminality.”

Former Ghanaian President, Rawlings, dies of COVID-19

Former President Jerry Rawlings of Ghana has died of coronavirus-related complications at the age of 73, according to multiple reports from Ghanaian media.

The development comes less than a month after he buried his mother.

Rawlings, who is one of the most respected African leaders, was a military leader in Ghana and later became a politician who ruled the country from 1981 to 2001.

The former President initially came to power in Ghana as a flight lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force following a coup d’état in 1979.

Prior to that, he led an unsuccessful coup attempt against the ruling military government on 15 May 1979, just five weeks before scheduled democratic elections were due to take place.

He was until his death, the African Union envoy to Somalia.

Rawlings as leader of Ghana launched a massive anti-corruption campaign that purged the nation of corrupt political elements.

A former Nigerian Presidential candidate and media mogul, Dele Momodu, who has close links to the Ghanaian Presidency, confirmed the development on Twitter.

“The saddest news of this year. My God. Former President Jerry John Rawlings of Ghana has passed on. I’m completely devastated. Good night, an African hero.”

UK responds to #ENDSARS petition against FG

UK Government and Parliament on Thursday responded to the #ENDSARS petition by some Nigerians against the Federal government.

With about 219,702 signatures, the petition seeks to implement sanctions against the Nigerian Government and officials, over abuse of power by the operatives of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, and the alleged shooting at protestors calling for SARS disbandment.

Reacting, UK said it awaits the outcome of Nigerian investigations into reports of police brutality, noting that it would not publicly speculate on future sanctions designations.

“The UK Government is deeply concerned by violence during recent protests in Nigeria, which tragically claimed lives. Our thoughts are with the families of all those affected.

The Foreign Secretary issued a statement on 21 October calling for an end to the violence and for the Nigerian Government to urgently investigate reports of brutality by its security forces and hold those responsible to account.

The Minister for Africa tweeted on 16 October, noting the Nigerian people’s democratic and peaceful calls for reforms, and again on 21 October, encouraging the Nigerian authorities to restore peace and address concerns over brutality towards civilians. He reiterated these messages when he spoke to Foreign Minister Onyeama on 23 October. The British High Commissioner in Abuja has also raised the protests with representatives of the Nigerian Government and will continue to do so.

We welcome President Buhari’s decision to disband the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) and the establishment of judicial panels of inquiry to investigate alleged incidents of brutality by the security services. They must investigate all incidents, including in Lagos, fully. The Minister for Africa tweeted on 29 October stressing the importance of the police and military’s cooperation with the panels. He raised this, and the need for the panels to urgently start investigations, when he spoke to the Governor of Lagos on 11 November.

The UK Government will continue to work with the Nigerian Government and international and civil society partners to support justice, accountability and a more responsive policing model in Nigeria. We will continue to push for the Nigerian security services to uphold human rights and the rule of law, investigate all incidents of brutality, illegal detentions and use of excessive force, and hold those responsible to account.

On 6 July, the Government established the Global Human Rights sanctions regime by laying regulations in Parliament under the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018. In a statement to Parliament, the Foreign Secretary set out in full the scope of the UK’s new Global Human Rights sanctions regime. He announced the first tranche of designations, as well as the Government’s approach to future designations.

This sanctions regime will give the UK a powerful new tool to hold to account those involved in serious human rights violations or abuses. The sanctions regime is not intended to target individual countries. It will allow for sanctions to be imposed on individuals and entities involved in serious human rights violations or abuses around the world.

We will continue to consider potential designations under the Global Human Rights sanctions regime. It is longstanding practice not to speculate on future sanctions designations as to do so could reduce the impact of the designations.

The UK Government will keep all evidence and potential listings under close review.”

Fani-Kayode sparks dating rumours with Egyptian lady

Former Nigerian Aviation Minister, Femi Fani Kayode alias FFK and an Egyptian lady identified as Nesma Galal have sparked dating rumours after they romantically gush over each other.

It all started after the lady posted a photo of FFK, describing him as the greatest and kindest man in the world.

“My sun is rising My beautiful moon. All my stars my everything in my life”, she added.

Reacting to the lady’s post, FFK called her “My Hatun”, an honorific word for women, equivalent to the English term “My lady.”

This is coming after Fani-Kayode separated from his fourth wife, Precious Chikwendu.

However, Nesma Galal’s profile stated that she is still single.

She also profiled herself as a Director in media line, beauty, fashion and travel.

“My dad a general in the Egyptian army,” she added.
