FBI arrests fugitive 50 years after escaping from custody

A fugitive Leonard Rayne Moses has been arrested in the US state of Michigan, by the FBI nearly half a century after he escaped from custody.

In 1971, Moses fled while serving a life sentence for the first-degree murder of Mary Amplo during civil unrest that followed the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968.

According to ABC News, investigators were able to catch Moses Thursday through the FBI’s Next Generation Identification system.

The system matched Moses’ 1968 fingerprints to fingerprints taken during a local Michigan state arrest in 2020, said Michael Christman, FBI Pittsburgh’s special agent in charge, during a press conference

“It’s these new advances in technology that the FBI must continue to identify and use to make sure those who commit crimes are brought to justice,” Christman wrote in a statement.

On April 6, 1968, Moses and others threw Molotov cocktails at a house during civil unrest in Pittsburgh that followed the assassination of King, according to the FBI.

Amplo, who was inside the house at the time, was badly burned from the attack. She died a few months later from pneumonia while recovering from the burns.

Moses was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1970 for killing Amplo. He was 16 years old at the time of the conviction, according to the FBI.

In March 1971, Moses’ case was brought before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to appeal his life sentence. His lawyers argued he was too young to make a voluntary waiver of his Miranda warnings.

“At the end of the court session, two justices provided dissenting opinions concluding the case should be remanded for a new trial,” a statement from the FBI said.

Despite the court victory, Moses escaped custody on June 1, 1971, while attending his grandmother’s funeral in Pittsburgh.

After Moses escaped custody, he assumed the identity of Paul Dickson, which he has used since at least 1999.

He used the alias while he was employed as a travelling pharmacist in Michigan, said Christman.

Moses was arrested at his home in Grand Blanc, Michigan, on Nov. 12 by the FBI’s Detroit Fugitive Task Force, said Christman.

According to the release, Moses is pending an extradition hearing and still faces Michigan state charges before he is brought back to Pennsylvania.

Social media reacts in awe after huge alligator is spotted walking across Florida golf course

A gigantic alligator has been spotted stomping across a golf course in Florida – prompting utter disbelief on social media.

The dinosaur-like beast with huge legs and tail was ‘out for a stroll’ on Wednesday as the area was swept up in Hurricane Eta.

The extreme weather appeared to have prompted extreme animals to come out of hiding.

‘That is Godzilla that is not a gator,’ said one viewer of the video which was posted from his buggy by golfer Jeff Jones at Valencia Golf and Country Club in Naples.

By the looks of it, the beast could have a claim at beating the largest alligator ever recorded in Florida – 17.4 feet long.

Alligator sightings are not uncommon in Florida. The state has an estimated 1.3 million of them, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife.

But this one in particular gained attention because of its abnormal size and unusual way of walking.

Another social media user wrote: ‘That thing didn’t just survive the meteorite 65 million years ago, it rose up and headed it top corner’.

One ‘lifelong Floridian’, said: ‘Holy s**t … I’ve seen a few gators in my time, but never one that big. His tail alone most weigh 100 pounds.’

And some got a bit overwhelmed: ‘Oh my gosh!!! That thing is HUGE!!! Looks like it is part dinosaur!! Wow. I’d die if I saw this in person.’

Typically alligators are seen in a crawling position but do lift up their legs higher when covering longer distances.

Nigerian Army not looking for DJ Switch

The Nigerian Army emphatically denied that it has mounted a manhunt for DJ Switch, who alleged soldiers killed between 7 and 15 protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate.

On Saturday, Commander of the 81 Military Intelligence Brigade, Brigadier Ahmed Taiwo, said the claims that soldiers were looking for DJ Switch were “further from the truth”.

Taiwo was given evidence at the judicial enquiry looking into the Lekki Toll Gate shooting and police atrocities.

DJ Switch, who has now fled to Canada, streamed the shooting by soldiers of unarmed protesters on the night of 20 October.

In subsequent video posts, the famous ddisc jockey, whose real name is Obianuju Catherine Udeh, said she saw bodies being taken away by soldiers.

DJ Switch on Monday surfaced in Canada, where she told a committee of the Canadian Parliament about the events of 20 October at the Lekki Toll Gate

EndSARS: Sanwo-Olu invited military because police ran away – Army General to Lagos panel

Brig. Gen. Ahmed Taiwo of the Nigerian Army has alleged that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu invited the military during the EndSARS in Lagos to avoid total anarchy.

Taiwo is the Commander, 81 Military Intelligence Brigade, Victoria Island.

He spoke on Saturday when he appeared before the Lagos Judicial Panel on SARS.

The panel is also probing the Lekki toll plaza shooting by soldiers on October 20, 2020.

The senior officer reminded Nigerians that the situation in Lagos had gotten out of control.

The General cited the killing of police officers, burning of stations, and looting of armouries.

Taiwo recalled that it got to a point where hoodlums blocked several roads and extorted citizens.

He showed the panel a video of how a mob killed someone, set the body on fire and discussed sharing the body parts.

Taiwo noted that the scenes are reminiscent of the Liberian Civil War “when the fighters believed that once they consume the human body, they would be fortified”.

“It was these incidents that made the Governor of Lagos State ask for military intervention and in my opinion, that was the correct thing to do since the police had been overrun and policemen were fighting for their dear lives.”

Croatia player immediately substituted as his Covid-19 result came back positive while on pitch

Croatia centre-back Domagoj Vida was substituted at half-time in the 3-3 friendly draw with Turkey on Wednesday after testing positive for Covid-19.

Though Vida, along with the rest of the team, had tested negatively on Monday, subsequent tests on the morning of the game resulted in a 'potentially positive result' being returned as the match was unfolding.

As a precaution, the 31-year-old, who plays club football for Besiktas, was taken off at half-time and put into immediate isolation with further testing confirming his positive Covid-19 diagnosis.

The Croatian Football Federation revealed the coronavirus scare post-match and were quick to stress that they had adhered strictly to all UEFA protocol.

"The medical service of the Croatian national team received initial information at the end of the break between the two halves that there was one potentially positive result. This is a common test procedure, and a 'suspicious' finding is retested to confirm the result," their statement read.

"As at that time the coach Zlatko Dalic had already made the decision to change Vida, the medical service of the national team isolated Vida according to all epidemiological measures until the confirmation of the test results.

"Vida will, in accordance with regulations, spend the next few days in self-isolation in Istanbul.

"All other national team members and staff members, who tested negative, are scheduled to travel to Stockholm. It is taken into account that the national team complied with all epidemiological measures, in accordance with UEFA's Return to Play protocol."

Croatia came from behind twice on Wednesday before themselves squandering a lead in a seesawing 3-3 draw.

15-year-old Cotonou maid is r.a.p.e.d and impregnated in Lagos, now stranded at LUTH over N53k bill

A 15-year-old girl identified simply as Fatima is troubled at the moment being at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital Idi-Araba a month after giving birth.

She was said to have been taken to the hospital by a woman, popularly known as Iya Kamoru, whom she lived with as a maid in the Mushin area of Lagos.

The hospital reportedly cancelled Fatima’s N151,000 medical bills and asked her to pay N53,000 feeding expenses incurred as of November 10.

City Round gathered that the hospital was also hesitant to discharge her and the baby because she did not want to return to Iya Kamoru’s house.

It was learnt that the girl’s tortuous journey began when she was brought from Cotonou, Benin Republic to do housemaid work in Lagos.

A worker at the hospital, who hinted Punch correspondent about Fatima’s situation, said the girl moved from one place to another until she ended up at Mushin where she was defiled by an unidentified man at night.

The worker said, “The girl said her mother is dead and that she was brought to Lagos as a housemaid from Cotonou. She ran away from her master and the woman (Iya Kamoru) saw her wandering around. She took her in and was helping her to hawk sachet water.

“According to her, she was outside with the woman one day when she slept off on a bench. The woman left her and went inside. While she was asleep, someone covered her mouth and r3ped her. It was dark and she could not identify the person. It was three months later that she realised she was pregnant.

“She was brought to the hospital in October by the woman. Thursday made it one month that she gave birth. The woman could not pay her medical bill which is about N150,000. The hospital has waved it and she is only required to pay for feeding which is about N53,000. Apart from this, the girl has nowhere to go. She said she did not want to return to the woman’s house.”

The Coordinator, Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network, Mr Ebenezer Omejalile, said the organisation had met with the welfare unit of the hospital to seek help for Fatima.

He urged the Lagos State Health Service Commission, and the state’s Ministry of Youth and Social Development to come to Fatima’s aid pending when she would be reunited with her family.

Former heroin addict shares before and inspiring after photos to encourage drug users who are trying to quit

An inspiring woman has turned her life around from being hooked on heroin and crack cocaine with a staggering make-over.

Demi-Nicole Dunlop was addicted to the Class A drugs for two years.

The 27-year-old took them everyday which left her looking gaunt and covered in face scabs.

But she has now been clean for four months after receiving treatment.

Student Demi-Nicole - who is now engaged - showed off her new glamorous look with silky hair and a stunning complexion.

She shared photos of herself during her addiction to give other addicts hope that they too can turn their lives around.

Demi-Nicole, of Fochabers, near Elgin, Scotland proudly said: "I've now been entirely clean of both crack cocaine and heroin for four months.

"That's entirely clean. After being an addict for two years, every single day.

"It took me a very long time to feel I'm worthy, I've done well and feel proud of how far I've come."

In the emotional Facebook post to her 3,500 friends and followers, she said: "But that's only because of the incredible support of you all, I'll forever be grateful for that."

"If you're reading this and you're in mid-addiction and you're feeling you will never get out of that dark, scary, black, horrible daily cycle of addiction, that black hole, then you can. Please please believe me.

"I had a large scale habit and I thought there was never gonna be a light at the end of the tunnel and I found it.

"It wasn't easy, it wasn't a walk in the park and it most certainly has been far from pleasant.

"But please be reassured by me, that you can and you will become free of that dark black hole of addiction.

"I know that feeling of thinking it's impossible, I'm an example of it being possible.

"I was absolutely terrified initially of making my story public as most of you are aware, but I'm very lucky in the aspect of having such great support and positive feedback, and so will you."

Demi-Nicole - who is currently getting treatment in hospital as part of her continuing treatment - added: "Please feel free - I've made this post public - to share my story!

"If this is able to help somebody else and give them the drive and reassurance things can change then I'd be thrilled."

Trump breaks silence, hints election game over

Outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump has finally broken his silence, admitting indirectly that he has lost the election to Joe Biden.

He spoke on Friday at the White House, his first speech since Biden was declared the winner last Saturday.

Trump came out to speak on the raging coronavirus in the country, where over one million infections were recorded in the first 10 days of November.

He last spoke on 4 November, though he has been tweeting and retweeting allegations of voting fraud.

He vowed not to impose a nationwide coronavirus lockdown, after one of Biden’s new advisers said earlier this week it may be the only option to tackle Covid.

But he then conceded that the decision may be out of his hands in the near future.

Trump said: ‘This administration will not go to a lock down…who knows which administration it will be, time will tell.’

Biden is on course to take over from Trump in January, although Trump has not formally conceded defeat.

Trump made the remarks after repeatedly refusing to accept Joe Biden’s victory in the November 3 election, and making unfounded claims that the result was rigged.

Biden was named winner on Saturday, with several forecasters also calling Georgia for him on Friday.

Biden has 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232, with the president’s promised lawsuits to challenge the result running into increasing difficulty in recent days.

Trump’s mention of lockdowns was his only reference to the presidential election, metro.co.uk reported.

He spent the majority of Friday’s press conference giving an update on Covid vaccine efforts on Friday, saying:

‘The past nine months my administration has initiated the single greatest mobilisation in US history, numbers like nobody has ever seen before.

‘No medical breakthrough has ever been achieved this quickly, this rapidly.

‘Operation Warp Speed is unequaled and unrivaled anywhere in the world.’

Trump, who referred to Covid as the ‘China virus’ went on to make excuses for the surge in cases across the US, which some scientists have said is a third wave.

Vera Omozuwa laid to rest in Benin

Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, the 22-year-old undergraduate who was r.a.p.e d and murdered inside a Redeemed Christian Church of God in Benin, Edo state, has been laid to rest on saturday, November 13.

It would be recalled that Omozuwa, who was a 100-level microbiology undergraduate at the University of Benin, had gone to Church to read during the COVID-19 lockdown when she was brutally attacked.

She died days later at the hospital while recovering from injuries sustained during the violent attack.

The death of Vera angered many Nigerians who demanded justice for her, sparking renewed calls for stiffer punishment for rapists.

Late Omozuwa has now been buried at the ‘Third Cemetary’ in New Benin, Benin-city, with family members, friends, and well-wishers in attendance.

Prior to the interment, a funeral service was held for her at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Peace Sanctuary), Edo Province 10 Headquarters, located along WAEC road, Aduwawa.

Back in August, six suspects were arrested in relation to Omozuwa’s death. One of the suspects said he was paid N1 million by his landlady to carry out the attack.

The suspect, Collins Uligbe, who hails from Agbor in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, made the confession while being paraded alongside other suspects by Edo State Police Command.

He said after the act, he used a handkerchief given to him by Mrs Mary Ade to wipe Omozuwa’s blood and private part and returned it to his landlady. According to him, she wanted to use it for rituals.

He gave the names of other suspected killers as Nelson Ogbebor, Tina Samuel, Valentine Akato and Nosa Osabohien.

Narrating the incident, Collins said although they were six that carried out the crime, he was outside giving them signals before he joined them inside the church.

Collins said Nelson hit the victim with a plank and when she tried to stand up he hit her with the fire extinguisher in the church.

The suspects were tracked down by the police through a man who bought the victim’s phone for N17,000.

However, Mary Ade, denied the allegation, saying she neither gave him the money nor asked him to wipe the lady’s private part.

Kogi state introduces levy on every loaf of bread

The Kogi state government has introduced a levy on every loaf of bread baked in the state.

The state ministry of commerce and industry said the levy is aimed at improving the internally generated revenue.

But the state chapter of the Association of Master bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN) told TheCable on Thursday that the bakers are against the levy.

An executive member of the association simply identified as Godfirst said the association has begun moves to meet with the consultant the state charged with collecting the fee.

Godfirst said they received a memo from the ministry imposing a levy to be paid “on each loaf of bread” produced.

“The letter was sent to us that a consultant has been given the job to generate fund from bakery to state government; to generate revenue to (for the) state government,” he said.

“We are trying to meet with the consultant but we have not been able to meet with him. We want to meet with him to give us more explanation.”

He said bakers in the state are experiencing hardship occasioned by the pandemic and will not be able to meet the new demand.

“We are not happy about it, presently there is no market. We are facing different types of challenges, and if they are now asking us to pay another tax, we don’t know how we can cope,” he said.

Canada sends message to Nigerians over immigration application and it might not be a ''pleasant'' one

The Canadian Government has informed Nigerians that its immigration office does not accept refugee applications directly from people.

It also noted that only Canadian migration officers can exclusively guarantee approval of immigration applications.

The High Commission, in a tweet, said the notice was important in light of “great interest in Canadian immigration programs” received lately.

It reads in part:

“You cannot apply directly for resettlement. You must be referred to Canada by a designated referral organization or a private sponsor.

“No one can guarantee that your immigration application will be fast-tracked or approved. Only a Canadian migration officer can decide if you can come to Canada.

“All the information you need to apply to visit or migrate to Canada is available free on the official Government of Canada website.”

The Canadian Government has already announced it is targeting welcoming 1.2 million immigrants from 2021 to 2023.
