Nigeria enters worst recession in decades

Nigeria has entered recession again, the worst economic decline in almost four decades.

In June, the World Bank warned that the collapse in oil prices and the COVID-19 pandemic could dip the Nigerian economy into the worst situation since the 1980s.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Africa’s most populous country has now contracted by -2.48%.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released the figures on Saturday.

NBS said the GDP recorded a growth rate of –3.62% year-on-year in real terms in the third quarter of 2020.

The growth in Q3 2020 was slower by 5.90% points when compared to the third quarter of 2019 which recorded a real growth rate of 2.28% year on year.

The dismal performance in the quarter was caused by the restrictions to movement and economic activity due to coronavirus.

The Q3 aggregate GDP stood at N39,089,460.61 million in nominal terms.

This was lower relative to growth recorded in the third quarter of 2019 by –9.91%.

Iyabo Ojo reveals why she underwent surgery

Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has confirmed she went under the knife for Tummy Tuck surgery.

Iyabo Ojo, in a recent interview, noted that she did the surgery to improve her self-confidence.

She said, “I have always been this way. However, I underwent surgery. I took off some fat in my tummy. When one has children, one has some extra skin and I hated it. But, I did it for my self-confidence.

Whenever I am walking around, naked, in my house, I want to feel sexy. Even if I did not do surgery, I have always had a great shape. I watch what I eat, drink a lot of water, and do adequate exercise. When one is in the limelight, one needs to take good care of oneself because a lot of people look up to one.”

Iyabo Ojo also reacted to the opinion that some of her children’s friends could ‘have the hots for her’ due to some of the pictures she shared on social media.

She said, “I am too strict for that. Even if they have such intentions, it would die in their minds. I play with my children but I could also be very strict and they would have probably passed the information to their friends. If they are in the house making a noise and I step inside, they would all go quiet. I am an African mother. While they were growing up, I used to spank them but I don’t do that anymore."

EndSARS protester inscribes tattoo on his chest to commemorate the killing of Nigerians at the Lekki Toll Gate

An EndSARS protester has received applause from Nigerians after he shared images of his body covered with tattoos of the tragic event that happened at Lekki toll gate.

20th October 2020 will forever remain in the heart of every Nigerian in the world as it reminds them of the ‘senseless’ killing of unarmed protesters who converged at the famous Lekki toll gate to demand a better system of government and disbandment of the now-defunct SARS operatives and SWAT.

In the photos, the young man had a fist in the air and the big unanswered question “Who Gave The Order” boldly written on his chest. He had a tattoo of the great heroine, Aisha Yesufu whose presence at the EndSARS campaign caused great fear and panic in the police and security forces.

Oyo seals six hotels, 4 banks, others over Land Use charges

Oyo State government, on Thursday, sealed off six hotels, four commercial banks, three filling stations, and seven companies for defaulting from paying the state’s land use charges.

In line with  the  government’s Land Use Charge revenue demand bill, the State enforcement team sealed off the affected business facilities for failing to pay the required tax.

The government said it took the decision to seal off the facilities after several reminders and discounts  offered to the defaulters were not taken advantage of.

The properties which are part of the premises under scrutiny in the Oyo State government property enumeration exercise were served bill for over 90 days and were expected to comply with the Land Use Charge obligation.

According to the government, most of the businesses owed millions, and sealing them was the first phase of the exercise which was carried out across all local governments within the Ibadan metropolis.

Speaking after the exercise, Chairman of the state’s Board of Internal Revenue, Aremo John Adeleke, said the exercise was targeted at  making  businesses in the state alert to their responsibilities, and  enable government to provide security, infrastructure, and other essentials necessary to make businesses thrive.

Adeleke said the state government has given, as palliative, an additional ten percent discount to complement the initial 25 percent discount on all taxes, to ensure that the businesses stay afloat in the face of economic realities posed by the COVID-19 scourge.

He added that the government was poised to generate all taxes from business owners without hurting them and the capacity to sustain economic growth in the state even as the enforcement continues till the end of the year.

He said, “The focus of the drive is not to close down or ground any business but to give a push to businesses to assist the government in creating a better business premise for them to thrive.”

Court orders arrest of Atiku’s son for ‘contempt’

The Upper Area Court at Kubwa in Abuja on Wednesday ordered the immediate arrest of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, son of Nigeria’s former Vice-President.

Bashir Danmaisule gave the order, following Abubakar’s failure to comply with a judgment that he should hand over their three sons to his divorced wife, Maryam Sherif.

Sherif had, last year, instituted a case against Abubakar, at the Upper Area Court at Gudu, also in Abuja, which was later transferred to the Upper Area Court at Kubwa.

She sought the court’s leave to grant her custody of her three sons.

The court, on October 27, 2020, delivered judgment on the matter, ordering Abubakar to hand over the children to Sherif with immediate effect.

But following the non-compliance of the defendant, Sherif’s counsel, Nasir Saidu, applied for the issuance of a judgment-debtor summons for the defendant to appear in court to explain why he did not obey the court’s order and why he should not be committed to prison.

But the defendant and his lawyer, Abdullahi Hassan, were absent in court.

The bailiff told the court that the summons had been served on the defendant through the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), where he works, on November 3, 2020.

Saidu said having served the defendant, who failed to appear in court as directed, he had to apply that the court issue a warrant of arrest on the defendant.

The lawyer applied that the defendant be arrested and imprisoned until he complied with the judgment of the court.

'Phone thief' bloodied after picking on woman who turns out to be MMA fighter

A female MMA fighter hit an alleged thief in the head after he stole her mobile phone.

The woman, who has only been identified as Brisa, said she had her phone snatched in the tourist resort of Mar del Plata in Buenos Aires last week.

The 20-year-old and a friend gave chase to the suspect as he sprinted away.

A group of workers stopped the fleeing man and Brisa grabbed her phone.

She then hit the man in the head several times.

Brisa, who practices mixed martial arts, managed to put the alleged thief in a headlock - despite the fact she is only 4'9" tall.

In footage of the incident she can be seen pulling his hair.

She walks away at the end of the clip, leaving him bleeding.

Before she does Brisa shouts: “Son of a b**ch, get a job!

"You think I spend all day locked up at work just so you can steal from me in three seconds?”

The police later arrived and took the man away in handcuffs.

An investigation into the theft is ongoing.

Brisa later explained that she was full of “hatred” because she spent months saving up to buy the new smartphone.

She said during an interview on the TV show ‘Nosotros a La Manana’: “I spent all day working during a pandemic with reduced salary and I refused to accept this guy coming along and making more than half my wages in three seconds.

“Hopefully this guy never steals again.

"I was lucky because I know how to defend myself as I practice MMA, but I don’t want it to happen to anyone else.”

She added: “I'm proud of how I acted and I don’t regret a thing.”

Eshinlokun-Sanni, who is also the Deputy Speaker, promised that the compensation would come as early as possible.

Recall that the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, had constituted a nine-member committee last month to investigate the level of destruction of property and loss of lives as well as to determine compensation for the victims.

“If your property is insured, LASACO is here to assist you. We’ll do our best to ensure that you’re well compensated,” Eshinlokun-Sanni.

“We’ll also make budgetary allocations from the 2021 budget for compensation to be paid. We’ll do our best and assist you in our own way.

The only person from south-east in Aso Villa is a photographer - Abaribe

Enyinnaya Abaribe, senate minority leader, says the only person from the south-east region in the Aso Villa is a photographer.

Abaribe said this on Friday when he featured on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels TV.

Amid the intense agitation from south-east leaders for Igbo presidency in 2023, Abaribe had said it was non-negotiable for an Igbo person to replace President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recently, David Umahi, governor of Ebonyi state, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a result of “injustice.”

In reaction, Abaribe who is a member of PDP, said Umahi’s defection is merely an occurrence and will be evaluated properly during the next presidential election.

He emphasised the importance of back channels in government, adding that it was the reason for the relevance of Mamman Daura, Buhari’s nephew, in the present administration.

“Before, every part of this country was represented in the Aso Villa, so when you want to do government business because sometimes government business is done from back channels, so if you have a problem or they want to do some consultations, you make a call into the Villa, you call to your countryman and say please, can you tell oga this or that so that we can have this talk, there is none today inside the villa. There’s one guy, his name is Sunny, I think he’s a photographer, ” he said.

“So, Umahi is going to talk to who? Ok, because he is governor, he can talk to chief of staff, he can go to see the president but what about others?”

NUC transfers ownership of LAUTECH to Oyo state government

Osun State Government has lost its joint ownership of Ladoke Akintola University of Science and Technology LAUTECH with Oyo State Government as the National Universities Commission, NUC,has given the latter full ownership while it stopped the former

The commission on Friday, said henceforth, Oyo State would have full ownership of the institution which the two states have been maintaining joint ownership.

But on the other hand, the NUC ceded the College of Health Sciences, located in Osogbo to Osun State Government.

Executive Secretary of NUC, Abubakar Rasheed made the announcement in Abuja, where he clarified that the administrative cost and other remuneration cost will be borne by the Oyo State government, while the Osun state government will bear the financial burden of the College of Health Sciences.

Recall that LAUTECH, Ogbomosho was established in 1990 by the old Oyo State government with the main campus located in Ogbomosho, while the teaching hospital was established in Osogbo.

Trouble started when Osun state was carved out of the old Oyo State in 1991, making both states joint owners of the institution.

The joint ownership arrangement was characterized by governance and management challenges, a development that affected the appointment of Vice chancellors to run the affairs of the institution.

It was also gathered that there has been issues with irregular payment of staff salaries over the years, as both parties were not taking responsibility.

To this end, the NUC constituted a tripartite committee which commenced its assignment on March 15,2020, with extensive meetings and interactions with the governors of Osun and Oyo as well as other stakeholders.

Following an update of the valuation of assets and liabilities, including a forensic audit, the negotiation retreat which culminated in the sharing of the assets and liabilities met in Lagos between 8th – 12th November 2020 where they arrived at a resolution.

Rasheed said, “It is gratifying to note that after extensive deliberations, negotiation and consultations, both owner states mutually agreed terms and the joint ownership of LAUTECH was formally dissolved.

” The mutually agreed dissolution was formalized through the signing of a memorandum of agreement by the Executive Governors of Oyo and Osun states, witnessed by the Attorneys-General of both states, giving legal effect to the transfer of ownership of LAUTECH to the government of Oyo State and the College of Health Sciences to the government of Osun state “.

Recall that in an attempt to find lasting solutions to the crisis, the tripartite committee engaged in re-evaluation and updating of the assets and liabilities of the university by relevant professionals from both states, in order to ascertain their current values.

The forensic audit was carried out by Deloitte and Touche, which included the delineation of assets and liabilities.

ASUU set for resumption as FG exempts body from IPPIS, offers N65bn to end strike

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, has disclosed that the Federal Government has agreed to pay an additional N15 billion as revitalisation fund of public universities.

The minister disclosed this on Friday in Abuja as the government makes efforts to reach the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

According to Ngige, this money would make it a total of N35 billion committed as revitalisation funds by the government following the payment of N20 billion earlier.

Ngige briefed reporters at the end of a meeting with members of ASUU led by its President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi.

The Minister said the meeting was a fruitful one, adding that the government has decided to shift grounds on the lingering issues.

Ngige further revealed that the government and the union have also reached an agreement on how to pay the over 7 months withheld salaries of the lecturers.

Recall that ASUU had during the week said it has shifted ground from its initial demands in the interests of Nigerian students who have spent over 7 months at home.

ASUU said it has dumped its initial insistence that the government should release one tranche of N220 billion revitalization fund and is now demanding for 50% of one tranche (N110 billion).

The union said that its latest demand is just for the government to show its commitment to revitalization of the public universities in the country.

Alleged SARS victim presents photo of officer who allegedly paralysed him

A 34-year-old trader, Mr Ndukwe Ekekwe, allegedly paralysed by officers of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) on Friday presented before a Lagos judicial panel of inquiry, a photograph of one of the officers allegedly responsible for his paralysis.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the trader presented the photograph of one Haruna Hamza while being cross-examined at the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry for Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters.

Responding to questions from Mr Emmanuel Eze, counsel for the police, Ekekwe narrated how he obtained the photograph.

“I have his (Hamza’s) contact. When this (paralysis) happened to me, I prayed that God should help me. I went online and I saw his status on WhatsApp and I took a photograph of his photo.

“The contact from which I got his photograph is 07060712007. He gave it to me before I was taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH),” Ekekwe said.

NAN reports that Ekekwe had on Nov. 3 told the panel that he was paralysed when he was thrown from a two-storey building at the Alaba International Market by SARS.

The trader told the panel on Friday that Hamza was a member of the SARS team which arrested him at Alaba International Market and took him to SARS office in Ikeja.

He alleged that after his arrest, his teeth were broken when he was tortured by the team at SARS office.

He said that he had yet to be told the crime he committed.

Ekekwe said that he properly identified Hamza.

“This is the policeman, the devil that made me like this. Nothing will make me forget him,” he said.

The Chairman of the panel, retired Justice Doris Okuwobi, admitted the photograph in evidence.

“The photograph of a fair-skinned man wearing a cap is admitted into evidence as Exhibit F, ” she said.

The petitioner told the panel that he could identify the SARS office in Ikeja where he was allegedly detained.

“When they came to my shop, SARS was written at the back of their shirts. It was officers in uniform that took me there.

“I do not know how to describe their station but I can identify the place,” he said.

Ekekwe said that he was arrested in his shop by SARS on Feb. 16, 2018, and spent two days in police custody.

“I was arrested around 2p.m. and taken back to the shop the next day in the evening.

“When I was arrested, I was handcuffed on one hand, when the police took me back to my shop, I was handcuffed on both hands.

“I was shouting and alerting people when they broke into my shop and tried to sell off my goods. The commander told two of them to take me upstairs.

“When I was taken upstairs,

they pushed me from my shop building. This was around 8p.m. I couldn’t see the officer who pushed me,” he said.

Following the allegation, Eze requested for a 20-minute stand-down (break) in order to consult the other members of the police legal team.

Eze’s request was granted by the panel.

However, when the panel reconvened after the break, the police counsel requested for a short adjournment of the proceedings.

He said that the team was unable to get in touch with some officers of the disbanded SARS.

“We are in the process of getting there, the phone number that the petitioner provided did not go through.

“In the overall interest of justice, we apply for this adjournment,” Eze said.

Responding, Okuwobi expressed dissatisfaction at the slow pace at which the police were handling the case.

She said that Ezekwe’s petition was just one of over 100 petitions being handled by the panel.

“If this panel is taking baby steps, it will not be able to do its assignment within the six months.

“I am constrained to allow this adjournment in the interest of justice.

“This hearing is adjourned to Dec. 1,” she said.
