Nine French language students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria kidnapped last Sunday have been confirmed freed.

The nine students were on the way to Lagos for an immersion programme at the Nigerian French Language Village (NFLV) in Badagry when they came under attack by kidnappers along the Kaduna-Abuja highway.

Kaduna State Govermment confirmed two persons died during the incident and nine others rescued by security operatives.

ABU’s Director of Public Affairs, Malam Auwal Umar, confirmed release of the students to The Nation on Sunday afternoon.

He said:”Yes, I can confirm to you that the students have been released. They were released yesterday (Saturday) night and most of them have already been reunited with their families.”

Though the university’s spokesman declined comment on ransom paid before the students were freed, the victims’ colleagues confirmed N1million was paid for each of the nine students.

Also, the campus blog of the University, ABU” Campus Connect @ABU_Campus, confirmed the students were released after ransom of N1million was paid per head.

AOU” Campus Connect @ABU_Campus wrote on Twitter: “Breaking News: Our #ABU9 Students have been released after the payment of 1 million per head.”

The kidnappers had demanded a cumulative ransom of N370 for release of the students.

One of the students, who escaped the attack with a gunshot wound, Dickson Oko, was reported to have said the kidnappers demanded N30 million each for their freedom.

The Nation however learnt the ransom was later reduced to N9million for the nine students.

It's unfair you didn't let your wife decide if she would walk away or not -- N6 BLASTS 9ICE

Lmao.... N6 says Naija girls keep ignoring track records? N666666666666666 Wawu!

Anyway, OAP N6 thinks the video 9ice recorded asking fans to help him plead with his wife after his cheating video went viral, is not fair, because he didn't give his wife room to think at all.

N6 thinks he should have given her space to decide on what she wants to do i.e is she would be leaving him and carry it out quietly. He berated the singer for coming up with the idea of a video which in-turn went more viral than the cheating video and actually 'blew' the whole matter.

His words after the cut...

Boston court set to jail Nigerians Iyalekhue, Osawaru for scams

Two Nigerians, Nosayamen Iyalekhue and Esogie Osawaru have pleaded guilty for defrauding victims using various online scams during the Covid-19 pandemic.

While Osawaru pleaded guilty on the 12th of November, Iyalekhue, 33, pleaded guilty to one count charge of wire fraud on Thursday.

U.S. Senior District Court Judge Rya W. Zobel in Boston, Massachusetts has scheduled sentencing for March 4, 2021.

Both risk 20 year jail terms.

Iyalekhue, a former teller at TD Bank in Norwood, Massachusetts from 2018-2019, was arrested in June 2020 along with 27 year-old Osawaru.

Iyalekhue and Osawaru participated from 2016 in a series of romance, pandemic unemployment insurance, and other online scams designed to defraud victims by convincing them to send money to accounts controlled by them.

They were caught when they started having unemployment benefits deposited into their accounts in May 2020.

To carry out the scams, the defendants used false foreign passports in the names of others, but with their photos, to open numerous bank accounts, and in turn directed the victims to send money to these accounts.

Iyalekhue and Osawaru then rapidly withdrew the victims’ money from various bank branches and ATMs, often multiple times during a single day.

The schemes included collecting unemployment insurance in the name of others during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The charging statute provides for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, a fine of up to $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater, and forfeiture.

The defendant is also subject to deportation proceedings.

Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and Joseph R. Bonavolonta, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Field Division made the announcement.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sara Miron Bloom of Lelling’s Securities, Financial and Cyber Fraud Unit is prosecuting the case.

Lekki: If it happens again, we would act the same - Army

The Nigerian Army has said that in hindsight, it will not have taken a different line of action if presented again with a scenario similar to the October 20 shooting incident at the Lekki Tollgate.

The Nigerian Army made the assertion on Saturday at the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry for Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters.

Representing the Army was Brig.-Gen. Ahmed Taiwo, Commander of the 81 Division, Military Intelligence Brigade, Victoria Island.

He made the assertion while being cross-examined by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

“Given the same set of circumstances, the military would have acted in the same way. After every operation, we usually do an After Action Review and come up with lessons learnt.

“I have looked at the tollgate issue with the same set of facts. We wouldn’t have acted differently,” he said.

Responding to questions from Mr Bernard Oniga, the lawyer representing the NBA, the witness explained why the army did not take the alternative route which avoided the tollgate if they were clearing up the Eti-Osa corridor as claimed.

“The discretion was at the hands of the commander, they were attacked by hoodlums and they responded,” he said.

Taiwo also denied that the actions of the military at the Lekki Tollgate triggered the wanton destruction of properties and loss of lives in Lagos.

“There was wanton loss of life and destruction of properties before the Lekki Tollgate incident. The loss of lives on Oct. 21 was on the Eti-Osa corridor and the loss of life were cult boys settling scores.

‘I saw businesses being torched, some plazas were torched while some were left. I do not know the connection between that and the Lekki Tollgate plaza.

“If they were reacting to the Nigerian Army they could have burned down an army barracks,” he said.

FIFA bans Haiti Football Federation president for allegedly abusing minors, female players

International world football governing body, FIFA, has banned Yves Jean-Bart, the president of the Haiti Football Federation, from all football-related activities after he was found guilty of using his position to s.e.xually harass and abuse female players, including minors

Jean-Bart, known as “Dadou”, was first accused of coercing several players at the Fifa centre, the Centre Technique National in Croix-des-Bouquets, into having s.e.x with him in an investigation carried out.

Then numerous sources involved with the centre, including alleged victims and their families came out to make more allegations.

Following the development, Jean-Bart, was provisionally suspended in May by FIFA while the organization’s ethics committee carried out an internal investigation into the allegations.

However, after the investigations, FIFA in a statement on Saturday agreed that banning Jean-Bart was the best solution.

According to the statement, Jean-Bart was sanctioned “with a life ban from all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level.”

He was also ordered to pay a fine of 1 million Swiss francs, or nearly $1.1 million United States dollars.

“The aforementioned ethics proceedings are part of an extensive investigation concerning Mr. Jean-Bart, as well as other officials within the FHF, who were identified as having allegedly been involved (as principals, accomplices or instigators) in acts of systematic sexual abuse against female football players between 2014 and 2020.

“The proceedings are still pending with respect to other FHF officials,” FIFA said.

Asuu reveals how universities can reopen within one week

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said government should put the same energy it put in getting the Aviation sector to work in Nigeria into the Educational sector.

Dr Edor J. Edor, the ASUU Chairman of the University of Calabar said universities would reopen within one week, if the same energy put in the aviation sector is extended to Nigeria’s educational sector.

Edor disclosed this in an interview with Daily Post.

According to Edor: “If government would put the same energy they put in the aviation sector into education, then schools would resume in the shortest possible time.

“If government can put the same energy and commitment in the aviation sector that enable them and their children to travel to their schools abroad into Nigerian universities, then within one week, schools in Nigeria would reopen.”

Edor accused the previous and present Nigerian governments of ignoring the country’s educational sector.

He maintained that Nigerian elites are not interested in the education of the common man.

“Not Buhari’s government alone, all successive regimes in Nigeria have ignored the education sector.

“Even when we had a president who was himself a lecturer, things were not better. Successive regimes and the Nigerian elites have no interest in the education of Nigerians and the reason is simple, their children are not here.

“They do not want the common man to be educated because education is power. Immediately the common man begins to know his or her right, these thieves and kleptomaniacs who find themselves in the position of power would become threatened because all Nigeria s would have known their right.

“They are not interested in developing education, they are not,” he added.

Trump suffers serious legal defeat in Pennsylvania

US President Donald Trump suffered yet another legal defeat in Pennsylvania on Saturday as he lost a suit seeking a court order to discard millions of mail-in ballots in the state.

Federal district Judge Matthew Brann sitting in Williamsport described the case as “strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations”.

“…This Court has been presented with strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations, unpled in the operative complaint and unsupported by evidence.

“In the United States of America, this cannot justify the disenfranchisement of a single voter, let alone all the voters of its sixth most populated state”, Brann said.

The case in which Trump’s friend Rudy Giuliani was the lead counsel, marked the latest failure of the Trump campaign to challenge the election results.

President-elect Joe Biden won the state with more than 80,000 votes.

In the 2016 election, Trump won the state, which normally vote for Democrats.

Trump lawyer Giuliani had alleged before the court, what he alleged to be a nationwide conspiracy of widespread voter fraud.

Giuliani, rumoured to be paid $20,000 a day for leading Trump’s legal charge, argued that the president was the victim of a nationwide conspiracy.

‘You’d have to be a fool to think this was an accident,’ Giuliani said.

‘It’s a widespread nationwide voter fraud of which this is a part.’

Giuliani did not raise complaints about voting machines in court, instead claiming Democratic-controlled counties didn’t allow Republicans to see ‘a single absentee ballot’ during counting.

‘I used to vote by absentee ballot a lot, because I traveled a lot,’ Giuliani acknowledged during his argument.

Mark Aronchick, a lawyer representing several Pennsylvania counties, sounded exasperated with Giuliani’s claims and said that the former New York mayor was “living in a fantasy world.”

“Dismiss this case so we can move on to the real business of this country,” Aronchick told Brann. “Let’s end this.”

With the loss of the case, Trump’s already-remote prospects of altering the election’s outcome, is further doomed.

Video reveals 7 army trucks involved in Lekki Toll Gate shooting

The Nigerian Army deployed no fewer than seven trucks to the Lekki Tollgate on 20 Oct. the day unarmed #EndSARS protesters were allegedly shot by the military.

A CCTV footage of the incident which was played by the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry for Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters, revealed this.

The footage was played on Saturday prior to the cross-examination of Brig.-Gen. Ahmed Taiwo, Commander of the 81 Division, Military Intelligence Brigade, Victoria Island.

The footage was played before a packed audience at the panel, and the timestamp in the video showed people running from the vicinity of Oriental Hotel towards the direction of the tollgate in the Lekki area at 6.43pm.

At 6.45pm, the military arrived and at least seven trucks are seen in the footage.

At 6.53pm, lights appeared to have been turned off at the tollgate facility and the footage began playing in a blurry black and white video.

At 6.55pm, the military drove through the tollgate and at 6.57pm, flashes of gunfire could be seen in the footage.

At 7.09pm, the protesters appeared to be surrounded on all sides by the military vehicles which had flashing lights.

Earlier during proceedings, the Chairman of the panel, retired Justice Doris Okuwobi noted that during the hearing of Nov. 6, 20-hours worth of footage presented by the Lekki Concession company (LCC) was given to Mr Adeshina Ogunlana, the lawyer for the #EndSARS protesters.

Okuwobi noted that the lawyer had on that day informed the panel that he would sift through the footage and select the portions that would be relevant to his case.

Responding, Ogunlana told the panel that he had watched the footage and had noted the parts of the video that are of interest to him.

“LCC has furnished us with the footage and we have taken our time to reach out to the counsel of LCC and the Lagos State Government.

“We agreed that subject to their acceptance, all we watched is the same until 5pm and we should limit viewing from 5pm to 7.59pm when the tape ended,” Ogunlana said.

The counsel for LASG, Mr Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN) aligned his views with Ogunlana’s submission.

“The relevant portions of the footage which is from 5pm to 7.59pm should be viewed,” he said.
