EndSARS: Nigerian govt reaches out to UK over sanction threat

The Federal Government, on Wednesday, revealed that it has reached out to the British Government over the threat by the UK Parliament, to impose sanctions on Nigerian officials over their roles in the EndSARS protests.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, stated this while fielding questions from State House reporters at the end of the weekly virtual Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to him, the Nigerian government has reached out to present its own side of the story.

Onyeama also argued that lawmakers are not responsible for imposing sanctions.

“Yes, we have reached out to the UK government. The meeting that took place were Parliamentarians and they do not speak for the UK government which acts for the United Kingdom and they have also heard the side of the (Nigerian) government regarding everything that has happened.

“So, we have been in touch with them and engaging with them. Of course, as in any democracy, the members of parliament are able to also able to air their view.

“But what is important, is that a balanced picture is made available to them, before they take any decision,” Onyeama said.

FG to ban importation of trucks above 10 years

In a bid to curb the frequent petroleum tanker crashes on roads, the Federal Government has expressed its intention to ban the importation of articulated trucks older than 10 years.

The government has also directed the Federal Road Safety Corps to commence the enforcement of the maximum load capacity of 45,000 litres of petroleum products by trucks.

These were part of the resolutions reached by the Major Oil Marketers of Nigeria and the National Association of Road Transport Owners at the renewal workshop held on September 24, which has now been scheduled for implementation during a follow-up meeting held at the Federal Road Safety Corps national headquarters Abuja, on Monday.

A statement on Tuesday by the FRSC spokesman, Bisi Kazeem, titled, ‘FG takes measures with strategic stakeholders against petroleum tanker crashes,’ disclosed that the FRSC Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi represented the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, at the parley.

It said the meeting also recommended that the SGF should consider securing a Presidential directive for urgent intervention in the provision of soft loans for truck renewal using a similar template as applicable to pharmaceutical companies and other sectors of the economy at the peak of COVID -19.

Gowon never took half of Central Bank with him to London – Fani-Kayode

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has defended former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, saying he never took half of Central  Bank with him to London

A British parliamentarian, Tom Tugendhat, had on Monday alleged that Gowon took half of the money in Central Bank with him to London when he was overthrown in 1975.

But Fani-Kayode on Tuesday said whatever people might say or feel about Gowon, it is not true that he took half of Central Bank with him when he went on exile to the UK and studied at Warwick University after being removed in a coup by General Murtala Mohammed.

“I have my views about Gowon and what I consider to be his role in the mass murder and genocide of 3 million Igbos during the civil war and I have often expressed it but he was not a thief and neither did he amass wealth for himself when he was Head of State.

“As a matter of fact, he was the darling of the British Government and no Nigerian leader, living or dead, has been as close to successive British Governments as he. This very young British MP is trying to revise history and demonise a man who served and protected British interests in Nigeria when he was in power more than any other and this is most dishonourable and unfair,” he said.

Fani-Kayode said the truth was that the greatest looters in the history of humanity were the British themselves and if he wants to criticise Nigerian leaders let him do so with facts and not fabricate lies in a scurrilous and essentially racist attempt to confirm the stereotyping of every Nigerian and African leader as being corrupt.

“The truth is that even though they pretend and sweep it under the carpet, there are as many corrupt British leaders, government officials and public servants today as there are Nigerian and this has always been the case.”

According to him, the “difference is that they are not so obvious and brazen and they cover theirs up very well in a very sophisticated banking system which thrives on taking in dirty money and keeping it.

”Whoever this MP is should get his facts right and stick to talking about the #EndSARS protests rather than talk about our history which he evidently knows nothing about.”

Family of slain vendor demands N500m compensation from Gbajabiamila, threatens legal action

Following the gruesome murder of a newspaper vendor, Ifeanyichukwu Okereke, by a security aide of Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, the family of the victim has demanded for the sum of N500m as compensation.

The Okereke family said it would take legal action against Gbajabiamila if all the demands were not met within seven days.

This was contained in a letter dated November 23, 2020 signed by lawyer to the family, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN).

The letter reads in part, “Our clients have instructed us to make from your good self, the following modest demands: That you use your good offices to ensure the immediate prosecution of your security aide (Abdullahi Hassan), who went on a frolic of his own, clearly acted outside the purview of his duty and responsibility by shooting to death an innocent, harmless.

“That you adequately compensate the Okereke family with a modest sum of N500m only. This monetary demand can never adequately replace or take the place of their son, husband, brother, and breadwinner’s life. But it will at least mitigate the obvious trauma and hardship the premature demise of their irreplaceable breadwinner has placed on them.

“Take note therefore that it is our clients’ firm instruction that in the event that you fail, refuse and/or neglect to accede to or proffer reasonable compensatory terms to our above modest demands within seven days from the date of this letter, we shall without any further correspondences from us, take appropriate legal steps to enforce our clients’ constitutional rights.”

The Department of State Services had last week arrested the operative, who shot Okereke, Abdullahi Hassan.

Also Gbajabiamila had visited the family of the deceased and promised to ensure that they do not suffer.

However, the family demanded more, adding that nothing could bring the dead vendor back to life.

The family also asked the Speaker to ensure that the safety of vendors was guaranteed as they had become afraid to return to the streets since the tragic incident.

Adesua Etomi blasts President Buhari’s aide, Lauretta Onochie

Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Nollywood actress and wife of Nigerian musician, Banky W, has slammed President Muhammadu Buhari’s aide, Lauretta Onochie, over a picture she shared to advise people on the importance of wearing face masks.

The picture shows some little kids wearing face masks made out of cartons.

Onochie had posted the picture on her Twitter page while urging Nigerians to ensure they wore face masks.

She wrote, “Wearing a mask is not a political statement, it’s not punishment by the government. Protect yourself, wear one. These have made efforts with masking where those of us who are more vulnerable and susceptible to COVID-19 are still swearing that it’s a scam. God bless their efforts.”

Reacting to Onochie's post, Etomi-Wellington wrote, “You are a disgrace both home and abroad. You should be ashamed that these children have to do this with cardboards. Instead of talking about how to tackle poverty so they can be protected adequately against the virus, you're spewing this nonsense.

“This picture made me so angry and brought tears to my eyes. They are so small, so vulnerable and so unprotected.

“I am finally accepting the fact that some human beings really are dead on the inside. Didn't understand how that could be even possible. I'm realising every day that it is.”

Trevor Noah to host the 2021 Grammy Awards

From The Daily Show to music's biggest night! Trevor Noah has been tapped to host the 63rd Grammy Awards on Jan. 31, marking his debut as the ceremony's emcee.

The Recording Academy and CBS revealed the news Tuesday morning, hours before the nominees are set to be announced.

"Despite the fact that I am extremely disappointed that the Grammys have refused to have me sing or be nominated for best pop album, I am thrilled to be hosting this auspicious event," Trevor said in a statement.

"I think as a one-time Grammy nominee, I am the best person to provide a shoulder to all the amazing artists who do not win on the night because I too know the pain of not winning the award! (This is a metaphorical shoulder, I'm not trying to catch corona). See you at the 63rd Grammys!"

Noah will be following in the footsteps of Alicia Keys, who hosted the last two ceremonies. And while the comedian may seem like an unexpected choice, his Daily Show predecessor Jon Stewart emceed the awards show back in 2001 and 2002. Noah was also nominated for Best Comedy Album at this year's Grammys but lost out to Dave Chappelle's Sticks & Stones.

US introduces new rule for African tourists

The US has issued a new temporary rule for African tourists.

US News quoting Reuters reported that the new rule could require tourist and business travelers from two dozen countries, most in Africa, to pay a bond of as much as $15,000 to visit the United States.

The U.S. State Department said the temporary final rule, which takes effect December 24 and runs through June 24, targets countries whose nationals have higher rates of overstaying B-2 visas for tourists and B-1 visas for business travelers.

The Trump administration said the six-month pilot program aims to test the feasibility of collecting such bonds and will serve as a diplomatic deterrence to overstaying the visas.

CNN shuns FG, releases second report on Lekki shootings

CNN has shunned FG and released a second report on Lekki shootings

This is coming amid threats of sanction from the Federal Government over its investigative report on the shootings at Lekki toll plaza during the #EndSARS protests.

The network today released a second report with more damning footage showing soldiers shooting at unarmed protesters on October 20, 2020.

The fresh report also shows the Commander, 81 Division, Brig.Gen Ahmed Taiwo, admitting before the judicial panel in Lagos that his men indeed took live ammunition to the tollgate.

The CNN report also highlights the fact that Brig.Gen Taiwo’s claim is at variance with the minister’s who had claimed last week that the army fired blank bullets.
