Judicial Panel throws out slain musician’s petition

An attempt by the family of the budding songwriter, Daniel Chibuike Ikeagwuchi, who was shot dead by a policeman in Port Harcourt to seek justice at the Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry was thrown out at today’s sitting.

Justice Chukwunenye Uriri (rtd) who headed the Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry on Alleged Acts of Brutality by the police explained that it struck out the petition submitted to it by the family of Daniel Ikeagwuchi popularly known as Sleek, based on the fact that the matter is already in court.

However, the obviously disappointed family through its counsel, Noble Njoku, told journalists after their presentation, that members of the family came to ask for N1 billion compensation for the murder of their son by a Mopol Officer.

Njoku said he wonders why the case was thrown out by the commission when the family is not certain Sleek will get justice in court.

The angry lawyer queried the method adopted by the panel describing it as “messed” stressing that he is “skeptical of the process of the commission”.

It would be recalled on October 16, 2020, Njoku had on behalf of the family made an application which was filed on October 16, 2020, via an originating motion of Fundamental Human Rights among others, asking for “A declaration that the killing of Daniel Ikeagwuchi Onyeukwu on the 19th of September 2020 at Elelenwo in Obio/Akpor L.GA Rivers State by the Nigeria Police is unjustified and unlawful”.

The suit further wants the court to declare that the continuous refusal of the Nigeria Police to arraign and prosecute the killer contravened Daniel Ikeagwuchi Onyeukwu’s right to justice and fair hearing.

Man reveals why he must marry an intelligent woman

Diego Maradona's final tragic words before he died REVEALED

Diego Maradona's final tragic words before he died were: “I don't feel well.”

The Argentina legend went back to bed after having breakfast and telling nephew Johnny Esposito he didn’t feel well and was going to lie down again.

A nurse who was looking after Maradona following his release from hospital after his brain scan op phoned for an ambulance and several responded.

But it was already too late and the retired footballer was already dead by the time help arrived.

The last hours of the former Napoli and Barcelona star’s life were played out in Argentinian media on Wednesday night as an autopsy expected to show he had died from a massive heart attack got underway.

One described how he had awoken in the morning looking pale and complaining of feeling cold.

He went back to bed after a quick breakfast where he is said to have pronounced his last words: ‘Me siento mal’ - English for ‘I don't feel well.’

Emergency responders made an unsuccessful attempt to revive him after they arrived at the rented house in the gated residential estate of San Andres north of Buenos Aires he had moved to after leaving hospital following his op on November 11.

Prosecution chief John Broyad, speaking outside San Andres as the retired footballer’s body was taken to a nearby morgue for an autopsy, said: “Diego Armando Maradona died around 12pm local time.

“The forensic police began their work at 4pm.“No signs of any criminality or violence have been detected.

“The autopsy is being carried out to determine beyond any doubt the cause of death but we can say at this stage that everything is pointing to natural causes."

State prosecutors who have launched a routine inquiry into Maradona’s death said on Wednesday it had occurred around midday.

The usually voluble and blunt governor spoke again today on a Channels TV programme, Sunrise Daily.

“We must understand in this country that political leadership is very key,” Wike said.

“Having the political will to implement what the people want is very serious.

“I don’t want to talk about the issue of distrust or no trust in government.

“People have raised such issues, that they don’t think that nothing will come out of all this dialogue.

“I don’t agree with that. I believe that if the president does not do, given the opportunities he has now, then, he will be putting Nigeria on fire.”

Exhausted nurse shares what Covid-19 ward is like in bid for virus to be taken seriously

A newly-qualified nurse has penned an emotional poem detailing what life is really like working shifts at a hospital on the coronavirus frontline.

Sharnie Wetton, from Baddeley Green, has described ‘exhausting’ 12-hour shifts as she treats up to 12 patients a day on a coronavirus ward at Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent.

The 26-year-old has shared the words with StokeonTrentLive after volunteering at the hospital since April and then qualifying in September.

Sharnie said she wrote the poem in the hope more people will take the virus seriously.

She said: “I had seen loads of comments on social media about the virus, so I decided to write a poem which maybe people would listen to or read.

“I’d love if these people could work on my ward for one day and see what we have to deal with and then tell me coronavirus is not real. If they saw what we saw, they’d believe it.

“We need to reduce the risk and all work together to stop the spread of the virus."

This week the hospital treated more than 300 Covid-19 patients - with 37 of them on ventilators.

Hundreds of staff have also been absent from work after getting caught up in the pandemic.

Sharnie said: “You don’t get a chance to sit down. It’s like there are not enough hours in the day to get what we need to do done.

“A lot of staff are off and we’re so busy. It’s even harder because I’m newly qualified and I’m certainly in at the deep end.”

The Keele University graduate typically starts her 12-hour shifts at 7am.

She added: “It’s dark when I leave for work and dark when I come home - I’m not really seeing any daylight.

“When I volunteered in April the ward wasn’t too bad because it was a surgical ward. But now we are a Covid ward and each patient needs different treatments depending on how poorly they are.

“I’m treating six to eight patients a day on average, but it can be up to 12.

"Some days I feel guilty because I don’t feel like there is the time to give the patients the care I want to, like the emotional care side.

"Even though I know I’ve done everything I can for them in a day, I always feel I could do better.

“The patients are not allowed to have visitors so we’re usually the only people they see in a day. It’s so draining and exhausting.”

But Sharnie said she loves her job and the team she works with as everyone is sticking together.

She added: “I chose this ward because of its teamwork and it is a great team. We're all just waiting for things to get better. The tightness of the team really helps.”

Drama, confusion as ‘dead’ man regains consciousness

Drama, confusion and disbelief engulfed the atmosphere when a patient who had been declared dead and taken to the Kapkatet sub-county hospital mortuary, Kenya suddenly ‘resurrected.’

A morgue attendant is said to have realised the man was still alive when he touched his body and felt he was still breathing.

The attendants alerted the medical staff who swung into action and took the patient to the casualty section where they resuscitated him.

The hospital medical superintendent Gilbert Cheruiyot revealed on Wednesday that after three hours the man identified as Kiplangat Kigen, age 32, regained consciousness.

Cheruiyot said he was then taken to the general ward where he is recovering and is in stable condition.

He said investigations were ongoing to establish why the patient was taken to the mortuary when he was still alive.

“We want to know what really happened to the extent of declaring somebody dead yet he is still alive. So for now we are investigating this matter and we will issue a comprehensive statement over it,” Cheruiyot added.

Scotland becomes first country in world to give women free sanitary products

Millions of women will get free tampons after Scotland’s Parliament unanimously passed a landmark vote.

It means Scotland will become the first country to make period products freely available.

The law introduces a legal right of free access to items such as tampons and sanitary pads in public buildings.

Scottish Labour MSP Monica Lennon, who introduced the bill, said: "Periods don't stop for pandemics and the work to improve access to essential tampons, pads and reusables has never been more important."

The Labour MSP has been working to tackle period poverty since she was elected to Holyrood in 2016.

She said: "On the issue of period dignity, I am beyond proud that Scotland is leading the way and we have moved at a fast pace in a short space of time."

Ms Lennon told MSPs: "We have got here because we have worked together. We have shown that this Parliament can be a force for progressive change when we collaborate.

"Our prize is the opportunity to consign period poverty to history. In these dark times we can bring light and hope to the world this evening."

Her Bill was passed by 121 votes to zero after winning the support of the Scottish Government and the other opposition parties in Holyrood.

Scotland's Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell hailed the passing of the legislation as a "significant moment for gender equality".

She said it was a "great privilege to be here today on a day that we will commit to Scotland becoming the first country in the world to legislate to ensure that free period products are available to all who need them".

Ms Campbell added: "This legislation will do much to advance equality and social justice here in Scotland and elsewhere, as other countries seek to follow our path."

Rose Caldwell, chief executive of the charity Plan International UK, said: "In making this world-first commitment, the Scottish government has shown itself to be a pioneer in tackling period poverty, and we hope that nations around the world will follow its lead.

"With this landmark legislation, Scotland could soon become the first country in the world to eliminate period poverty once and for all, and with household finances under strain from the coronavirus restrictions, the need has never been greater.
