‘Policemen beat me till I peed on myself': #EndSARS protester, Felicia Okpara tells Lagos panel

An #EndSARS protester, Felicia Okpara, has testified against the police, saying she was brutalized by officers simply for recording the violence that took place during one of the protests in the Surulere area of Lagos State.

She said this on Friday while narrating her ordeal to the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution.

Okpara told the panel that she had just concluded an interview in the area and was heading back home when she saw the protest and decided to join.

Shortly after, she heard gunshots and people started scampering for safety.

According to her, after running towards a police station, she decided to record the incident but was accosted by a police officer who asked why she was recording and ordered her to stop.

Refusing his orders, the said officer pulled out a gun on her while another joined in and both forcefully dragged herself and another lady to the police station nearby.

On getting there, several officers including women started beating and punching them. According to her, the beating was so much that she lost control and urinated on herself.

“While the beating was going on, I lost control of my body and my phone fell on the ground and one of them used his leg to smash it because he believed I was recording with it and I was going to pot it on the internet.

“While we were still at that gate, some were coming out, they joined the beating. Dragged me inside, that was where I lost control of my body, I peed on myself. I managed to get a hold of the phone because I knew that was the only thing I had,” Okpara said, fighting back tears.

Court strikes out SERAP' lawsuit against Lai Mohammed, NBC

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday struck out the case filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) against the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

The Court said in its ruling that SERAP has no locus standi in the case as it’s not a part of the matter.

The presiding judge also described the case brought before it by SERAP as “a mere academic exercise.”

SERAP had a few weeks ago approached the Court to stop the N9million fine imposed on some broadcast stations for infractions.

The right group asked the Court to declare arbitrary, illegal, and unconstitutional the N9 million fines imposed on Arise TV, AIT and Channels TV (N3million each) for their coverage of the #EndSARS protests.

Most marriages and relationships collapse because they are based on s.e.x - Ghanaian actor, Majid Michel

Ghanaian actor, Majid Michel has said most relationships and marriages these days collapse because of one thing -- S.E.X.

He says many start relationships based on S.E.X and not friendship asking how that would last.

Sharing his thought on Instagram, Majid wrote;

''Interviewer: So Majid why do you think relationships and even marriages don’t last? Majid: well, if you are going out on a first date and all you are thinking about is sex, therein lies the problem. People don’t know how to have a relationship outside of just a sexual relationship. they don’t know how to talk to a person, they don’t know how to be friends. and this is the reason a lot of relationships and marriages are breaking down. #LEADERSHiP''

Aside for a successful career in acting, Majid has been praised for a successful marriage of many years.

Anger as Bayelsa police allegedly shoot three women in a bid to disperse traffic

There was pandemonium on Tuesday at the Edepie suburb of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital when one of the policemen on an escort duty fired indiscriminately hitting a 17-year-old girl, a pastor’s wife and a trader along the popular Tombia market area.

The road leading to the Edepie roundabout from the Tombia end is home to the popular Tombia market and motor parks and is notorious for its daily gridlock caused by traders infringing on the right of way of motorists and other road users.

The incident, it was gathered, occurred Tuesday night and the victims were identified as Alice Azaghene aged 17, one Mrs Ebinipiri J. Onojamadu aged 46 and Madufuro Blessing aged 32.

According to an eyewitness, the armed policemen, about six in number, on getting stuck in the traffic reportedly went down from their vehicle and started shooting ostensibly to clear the way free passage for vehicles.

It was gathered that when the traders refused to leave the road, one of the policemen got infuriated and fired gunshots at the traders and passersby, hitting the victims.

The quick visit of the State Commissioner of Police, Mike Okoli, to the scene of the shooting and arrest of the trigger-happy police team, was said to have calmed frayed nerves as some youths were already chatting “#End Police Brutality.”

Another eyewitness, Joy Robert, said: “The police van was packed along the Melford Okilo road by Tombia roundabout. Before we knew what was happening, the policeman started pointing his gun at the women, ordering them to move out of the way. Because the women hesitated to move out of their way, he started shooting the ground.

“I thought I had been shot but I heard my mom screaming that she could not move her legs. It was at that point I realized that she had been shot on her leg. So, some persons came to our rescue after the police van had left the scene, driving towards Amassoma but I was able to write the number of the van down.

“If they line up the policemen, I could identify them. All I want is justice for my foster mother.

As we speak, the hospital is already saying that if we don’t pay an advance fee, they would discharge my mother from the hospital.”

India enters first recession in 73 years

India’s economy contracted 7.5 percent between July and September, performing the poorest among major advanced and emerging economies and entering a technical recession for the first time since independence, official data showed Friday.

Although the figures were an improvement on the record 23.9-percent contraction recorded last quarter, they indicate that Asia’s third-largest economy is in for a tough fight as it attempts to revive demand and create jobs even as coronavirus infections climb.

The two successive quarters of contraction mean that the country has now entered a “technical recession” for the first time since 1947.

After virus-led lockdowns ravaged the globe, the growth recorded by major economies including the United States, Japan and Germany during the quarter ending on September 30 raised expectations that India would also enjoy a revival, but they are yet to.

Bank manager sentenced to 5 years in prison for N27m fraud

Justice Adie A. Onyebueke of the Cross River State High Court, Akamkpa, on Friday, sentenced Augustine Effiong Bassey to five years in prison.

Bassey was found culpable of stealing N27 million belonging to a microfinance bank where he was a branch manager.

He was prosecuted by the Enugu Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a one-count charge of stealing.

According to EFCC, sometime between 2010 and 2012 at Uyanga, Cross River State, Bassey stole the N27,300,000 being property of Ekondo Microfinance Bank Limited.

He did this by personally carting away the sum from the bank’s vault and gave to his fronts for execution of non-existent contracts for the bank.

The disgraced banker was arrested in July 2016 by the EFCC upon intelligence.

His offence was contrary to Section 390 of the Criminal Code law, CAP C16 (VOL 3) of the Laws of Cross River State of Nigeria, 2004 and punishable under Section 390(9) of the same law.

The defendant pleaded “not guilty” when the charge was read to him.

But Fortune Amina Asemebo, prosecution counsel, proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

Justice Onyebueke convicted and sentenced Bassey, with an option of restituting N15 million to Ekondo Microfinance Bank.

Hacker demands millions of pounds after hacking Manchester United system

Manchester United are reportedly being held to ransom for millions of pounds by cyberhackers who still have control of the club's computer systems.

Manchester United's network has allegedly been infected by a computer virus, and the club face having sensitive information leaked unless they pay a ransom.

AP is reporting that Manchester United staff members still have no access to email, and other functions are also unavailable.

United remain confident, however, that there has been no breach of fan or customer data.

It is not known who the criminals are, or exactly how much money is being demanded.

A United statement read: "Following the recent cyber attack on the club, our IT team and external experts secured our networks and have conducted forensic investigations.

"This attack was by nature disruptive, but we are not currently aware of any fan data being compromised. Critical systems required for matches to take place at Old Trafford remained secure and games have gone ahead as normal.

"The club will not be commenting on speculation regarding who may have been responsible for this attack or the motives behind it."

The Inspector General Of Police Force in Nigeria IGP Muhammad Adamu Abubakar has charged his men in general not to feel discouraged by the protests staged by Nigerian youth calling for the end of its Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The police boss gave the charge during a visit to Ogun State police command Eleweran, Abeokuta.

He said all that happened during and after the protest is as a result of fake and bad news.

The police boss who had gone round the southwest, however, called on all police officers to come out fully to perform their duties because it is their constitutional responsibility.

“Don’t be discouraged, come out in full, and perform your duties, nobody can do it, it is your constitutional responsibility and you must do it. No amount of intimidation can prevent us from doing our job.

“Nobody can demoralise us, nobody can prevent or make us shy away from performing our duties. The responsibility of protecting lives and property is given to the police and you are licensed to carry arms.

“We are encouraging you to go out there and perform your duties without fear or favour and without being afraid of any victimization. Be courageous, be civil and be calm and follow the procedures in performing your duties.

6900 people test positive for HIV WITHIN 6 MONTHS in Oyo

The Oyo State Agency for the Control of AIDS (OYSACA) has announced that between January and June 2020, over 6,900 individuals tested positive for HIV in the States despite measures taken to curtail the spread of the virus.

While briefing the press on Thursday to kick start the 2020 World AIDS celebration in Ibadan, the Chairperson of OYSACA who is also the Wife of Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, said the prevalence of HIV in the state remains at 0.9 percent, with more women as victims than men.

Engineer Makinde who was represented by OYSACA’s Executive secretary, Dr. Lanre Abass announced that as of June 2020, the agency had counseled and tested over 765,000 people, with 0.9 percent testing positive even as the state procured N4 million worth of condoms for distribution in the community as part of measures to curtail the spread of HIV.

She added that out of 230,000 expecting mothers screened for the virus, 690 tested positive even as 21,452 patients are currently receiving treatment for HIV in Oyo State.

The chairperson also pointed out that the pandemic has been a threat to the fight to eradicate AIDS in the state as available resources, especially finance, is being stretched to the limit to fight the virus, coupled with the economic recession the country is currently battling.

She however noted that, now, more than ever, it is necessary to work in harmony and show love, eliminate stigmatization and discrimination, individualize centered attention and ground responses in human rights and gender-responsive approaches to end the simultaneously occurring pandemics of HIV and COVID-19.

Engineer Makinde added that the state is considering HIV self-testing as part of measures to increase testing in the state noting that OYSACA is committed to having a generation of people free of HIV/AIDS in Oyo state.

Meanwhile, the 2020 World AIDS celebration in the state, will be commemorated with various programs including a rally in Saki, film show and debate and quiz on HIV/AIDS among selected school students, and will also offer free HIV testing to 10,000 people within the state

Senator Ali Ndume released from Kuje prison

Justice Okon Abang of The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to the Borno South Senator, Ali Ndume.

Ndume has been detained in Kuje prison since Monday following his failure to produce Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman, defunct Pension Reformed Task Team (PRTT) who he had stood surety for.

However, Justice Okon Abang in a ruling on Friday granted bail for the senator bail on the basis of his record of good behaviour before the court.

The judge granted bail to the senator pending the hearing and determination of Ndume’s appeal filed at the Court of Appeal to challenge Monday’s order sending him to jail for his inability to produce the fleeing Maina.

He ordered the senator to produce one surety who must be a resident of Abuja and present evidence of ownership of property anywhere in Abuja.

According to the judge, the surety must also depose to an affidavit of means to indicate his readiness to forfeit the bail guaranty should the senator jump bail.

The judge also ordered the senator to deposit his passport with the Chief Registrar of the court.

You’re great without Grammys nomination – Femi Kuti

Nigeria’s Afro-beat legend, Femi Anikulapo-Kuti has said that not being nominated for the Grammys award does not mean a musician is not great.

Kuti said this while making reference to his father, Fela and Bob Marley who never got nominated or won Grammys award in his time.

The Afro-beat legend said Music is not about awards but spreading love and giving people will to go through hard times.

On his Twitter page, he wrote: “Music really isn’t about awards though. Fela never won or was never nominated. I don’t think Bob Marley was too.

“Music is about spreading love, giving people the will to go through the hard times in live, etc and inspiration. Music must bring comfort too.”

He, however, clarified that he is not referring to anyone in particular who got nominated for the Grammys, but himself who has been nominated four times for the award.

“This tweet on Grammys was concerning me saying I have four nominations. And all I’m saying is that it’s not the objective.

“Many GREAT musicians have never been nominated doesn’t mean they are not GREAT. I wasn’t referring to anyone but myself, some have chosen to abuse, or drag others. Pity.” He said.
