36 UCH nurses infected with Covid-19 – NANNM

No fewer than 36 nurses were infected with the deadly Covid-19 virus during the heat of the pandemic in Nigeria, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, University College Hospital, Ibadan, disclosed on Monday.

Making this disclosure at the Foundation Laying ceremony of the Nurses’ House at the UCH was Mrs Ronke Bello, Chairman, NANNM, UCH.

Bello described 2020 as a critical year during which the World Health Organisation challenged nurses and other health workers to face the global pandemic.

She said, “Our nurses also got infected at the University College Hospital at the peak of the pandemic in Nigeria. We have it on record.

“At least, 36 of us were infected at UCH. Some (infections) were severe, some mild, some moderate. But, to the glory of God, we all came out of it.

“We did not record any death or loss to the effect of Covid-19 despite our level of exposure to the infection. We came in contact with those who had been diagnosed and those who were yet to be diagnosed.”

Maradona fell and hit his head days before he died and was left alone ‘without help’, nurse claims

Diego Maradona fell and hit his head a week before he died - and was left alone for three days "without help", his nurse has reportedly claimed.

The Argentinian football legend, 60, passed away from "chronic heart failure" at his home in Buenos Aires last week.

But, with police probing his death over allegations of medical negligence, a lawyer for his nurse reportedly said he hit his head during a fall in his house.

According to local media, the World Cup winner was not taken to hospital or given an MRI scan for the bump on the right side of his skull.

At the time, he was recovering from brain surgery which removed a clot on the left side of his head and was receiving round-the-clock care.

A lawyer for Gisela Madrid, the star's nurse, reportedly said: "Maradona fell on the Wednesday of the week before his death.

"He fell and hit his head, but they didn't take him to the hospital for an MRI or CT scan …"

Attorney Rodolfo Baquè also claimed the former Barcelona and Napoli playmaker was left alone for three days after the tumble.

He said: "Maradona was unable to decide anything - after the fall he was left alone for three days in his room, without being seen by anyone and without being helped."

His preliminary autopsy report said Maradona suffered "acute lung edema and chronic heart failure" and died in his sleep.

On Saturday, it emerged that the iconic sportsman's nurse admitted she lied about an early-morning check-up on him.

The sensational confession added more mystery to the circumstances surrounding his untimely death.

Initial reports pointed to a 24-year-old nephew, who was living with him, being the last person to see him alive over breakfast the day he died.

He was said to have told his relative: “I’m not feeling well” before going back to bed and dying in his sleep.

However, investigators have now been told he never got up on Wednesday to eat anything.

Police found a late-night sandwich lying uneaten in Maradona's bedroom when he was discovered dead.

One night-shift nurse told cops she had seen the star "sleeping and breathing normally in bed" at around 6.30am on the morning of his death.

She then claimed she saw him alive at 9.20am - however the medic has now admitted she never went into the footballer's room and that she was "made to lie", local media reports.

It is not clear why the woman - who works for private medical firm Medidom - lied under oath.

Psychiatrist Susana Cosachov and psychologist Carlos Diaz, also part of the star's care team, found his lifeless body shortly before midday.

Two of the star's daughters Dalma and Giannina have told police they suspected the medication their father was given was not appropriate.

And at the weekend, Maradona personal doctor Leopoldo Luque had his office and home raided by cops amid reports the death is being treated as manslaughter.

On Sunday, following the 40-minute search on his home, Dr Luque, a neurosurgeon, said he did "everything he could, up to the impossible" and considered himself a "friend" of Maradona.

He also revealed Maradona was battling addiction problems when he died.

During an emotional statement, the doctor said the footballer had issues with pills and booze, adding: "He punished himself in a way I wasn’t going to allow, not as a doctor but as a friend.

"You want to know what I am responsible for? For having loved him, for having taken care of him, for having extended his life, for having improved it to the end."

Dr Luque said Maradona looked "very down" in the days leading up to his death and should have gone to rehab following the op.

"He should have gone to a rehabilitation centre. He didn't want to," he said, describing Maradona as "unmanageable".

"I am the person who has been taking care of him. I'm proud of everything I've done. I have nothing to hide. I am at the disposal of justice," he added.

Federal Government warns against Christmas carol, tells Nigerians abroad to stay away

The Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 has urged Nigerians to be weary of festivities such as Christmas carols as the year winds down.

It also warned against non-essential travels just as it asked Nigerians abroad to remain wherever they are or stand the risk of being stranded in the country in the event that the government takes a decision on international travels.

The call formed the theme of the speeches of the Chairman of the PTF, Boss Mustapha; the national coordinator, Sani Aliyu; the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire; and the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Chikwe Ihekweazu, at the weekly briefing of the task force in Abuja on Monday.

Mustapaha, who is also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said the PTF was escalating its surveillance and testing drive to ensure that the spread of the virus was effectively contained as the nation approaches the festive season.

“We shall continue to remind Nigerians that all non-essential trips should be put off this December. This is for your safety and good health,” he said.

Nigerian traders in Ghana raise alarm over closure of shops

The National Association of Nigerian Traders has called on the Federal Government to take urgent action as Ghanaian authorities embarked on another round of closure of shops belonging to Nigerian traders on Monday.

The National President of NANTS, Ken Ukaoha, who made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, condemned the maltreatment of Nigerian traders in Ghana.

Ukaoha said that the entire process showed Ghana’s decision to undermine trade and economic integration process in the West African region.

He, therefore, urged the Federal Government to take immediate actions and urgently present the maltreatment of Nigerians in Ghana to the Council of Ministers and the Authority of Heads of State.

Hundreds of shops belonging to Nigerian traders in Ghana have been under lock and key since September, 2019.

“As at today, November 30, the Ghanaian Authorities led by Security Agencies have started another round of closure of shops belonging to Nigerian traders in Ghana.

“The notice placed above the padlocks on each of the locked shops informs owners to come to their Ministry of Trade and Industry with evidence of payment of one million dollars.

“It is indeed a complete dent on the face of ECOWAS and a bold question, perhaps asking the Nigerian Government ‘What would you do?’ or ‘Do your worst!’” Ukaoha noted.

At least one person has been killed and several others injured in a feud that ensued between youths of two different settlements in the Water Board area of Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.

The clash, which was said to have been triggered on Sunday as a result of a fight between two young men over a lady’s love at a party hall, also led to the destruction of properties worth millions of naira.

This degenerated to a crisis when one of the young men hired thugs to inflict mayhem on the other, who in turn, called on friends to assist in fighting back.

“It later became a religious fight between Christian and Muslim youths. They broke my doors and windows, but fortunately, security operatives arrived and took control of the situation and that is why I am here to pack what is left of my bakery,” he said.

Another eyewitness, Ezekiel Ali, said he saw the lifeless bodies of two youths on the ground after the fight.

“Although I am not a specialist, from what I saw, one of the victims was hit by bullets because we saw holes in his body,” he said.

Nigerian banker behind bars since 2011 bags 5 years jail term

Justice T. B. Adegoke of the Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State today November 30, 2020, sentenced Onus Osagie Amahian, a former staff of Access Bank, to five years imprisonment.

Amahian was prosecuted by the Benin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a 25-count charge bordering on forgery and making false entry into Delta State Government payroll.

A former IT officer of Access Bank, the defendant was said to have between August and October 2011 fraudulently inserted names and account numbers of his family members and friends into the payroll schedule of Delta State government being handled by Access bank and subsequently paid monies into those Accounts and withdrew same and in the process defrauded the Bank of an aggregate sum of Nine Million, Three Hundred and Forty-Four Thousand, Nineteen Naira and Twenty Three Kobo (N 9, 344,019.23).

Amahian was first arraigned in 2011 and pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the 25-count charges preferred against him by the EFCC, setting the stage for a full trial.

However, on November 19, 2020, he changed his plea from ‘not guilty’ to ‘guilty’. This prompted the prosecuting counsel, F.O. Dibang to ask the court to convict and sentence him accordingly. Justice Adegoke convicted him on all counts but reserved sentencing till today.

In his judgment, Justice Adegoke took cognizance of the fact that a substantial amount of money was recovered from the defendant during the investigation and had been in the Nigerian Correctional Centre since 2011 and shown remorse for his actions.

He, therefore, sentenced the defendant to 5years imprisonment on each of the counts. The sentences shall run concurrently and shall commence from the date of arrest.

One of the counts read: “that you Onus Osagie Amahian between the month of August and October 2011 at Access Bank Branch Asaba within the jurisdiction of this honorable court did steal the sum of Nine Million Three Hundred and Forty-Four Thousand, Thirteen Naira Twenty Three Kono (N9,344,013.23) only from Delta State Government payroll (NEFT/ DTSG/.TCO/ ACC ) in Access Bank PLC branch Asaba and thereby committed an offense punishable under Section 390(6) of the criminal Act CAp C38 of the Revised Edition ( Laws of the Federation of Nigeria) 2007”.
