Grieving son, 41, took own life 8 days after his mum died

A devastated man took his own life eight days after his beloved mother died.

Wayne Sant, from Bucknall in Stoke-on-Trent, was found unresponsive in his bathroom and pronounced dead a short time later.

An inquest heard the 41-year-old had been depressed after his mother died and had taken a number of drugs which had caused his death, reports Stoke on Trent Live.

Wayne's father, David Sant, said Wayne’s mother Brenda had passed away on January 20.

He said in a statement: “During the eight days since his mother’s death Wayne had not been coping and had been depressed.

"He made a comment that he didn’t know how he was going to cope without his mum.”

On January 29, Mr Sant went out leaving Wayne – who lived with him – at home. When he returned, Wayne was in the bathroom.

Mr Sant said: “The door was closed. I spoke to him because it was time for me to take him to the chemist. He said, ‘I’m sorry, Dad’. I understood that to mean he was sorry that he wasn’t ready in time.

“About five minutes later I heard a thud. I went to the bathroom but I couldn’t open the door.”

Mr Sant forced his way in to find Wayne lying on the floor. An ambulance was called and he was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital, but he could not be resuscitated.

Tests revealed he had a number of drugs in his system. The cause of death was recorded as mixed drug toxicity.

The inquest heard Wayne had been a long-term drug user. He was receiving assistance from drug abuse services and was on a prescription for methadone.

Two days before he died, he had told his GP he was having trouble sleeping since the death of his mum. He denied having suicidal thoughts and was prescribed a sleeping pill.

Recording a conclusion of suicide, area coroner Emma Serrano said she believed Wayne deliberately took an overdose.

She said: “I am satisfied Wayne Sant intended to take his own life. His mum had died eight days previously and he was not coping well.

"He had expressed a view that he did not know how he would cope without her.

“He had taken himself to the bathroom and locked the door, not wanting to be found, and did so while his father wasn’t at the address.

"The quantity of substances he had taken tips the balance for me.”

Kate and Meghan's wedding dress maker struggling to feed kids and may lose home

An embroider who worked on Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle's wedding dresses is reportedly on the brink of homelessness after getting no government support.

Chloe Savage, who has also worked on costumes for the Harry Potter franchise, said she has received no financial help during the pandemic.

The 43-year-old told the Sunday Times that she has had to lay off apprentices and close her workshop after work dried up due to Covid-19.

She told the newspaper: “My daughter has started avoiding eating lunch and supper because she thinks it will save me money on the food bill."

Ms Savage said she is struggling to feed her two children after her Universal Credit application was rejected four times.

The government has come under fire over the lack of support for self employed people.

As her business - Chloe Savage Embroidery - is not making any money, she has not been able to draw a salary, and now says she can only afford one more month of rent.

Lagos Police threaten showdown as youths plan fresh #EndSARS protest

The Lagos State Police Command has threatened that “security agencies will not fold their arms” as youths plan fresh protests against police brutality and extortion.

This was contained in a press statement on Sunday by the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, titled ‘No room for violent protest, gathering in Lagos’.

The statement was issued after a poster titled “#EndSARS reloaded phase II” went viral on social media.

In a copy of the poster obtained by punch correspondent on Sunday, it was stated that the “phase II” of the #EndSARS protest would begin on Monday, December 7 in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Delta, and Bayelsa.

The demands of the protesters, according to the poster, are “Buhari, Buratai, Sanwo-Olu must resign and face ICC for killing innocent Nigerians at Lekki toll; free all #EndSARS protesters; unfreeze all bank accounts of #EndSARS protesters and referendum.”

Reacting, the police described the organisers as “unpatriotic”, warning that “any unlawful gathering, procession or protest will be suppressed”.

The statement read, “The Lagos State Police Command has again warned against any gathering, procession or protest in Lagos State as some unpatriotic individuals and groups are planning to embark on the replica of the recent destructive and violent Endsars protest that left pains and agonies in Lagos State

“The Command has reliably gathered intelligence that certain individuals/groups have concluded plans to lure unsuspecting Lagosians, especially youths, into their planned protest which is proposed to commence tomorrow, Monday 7th December, 2020 at designated locations in the state

“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to re-echo and remind the general public that the Government of Lagos State, businesses, individuals, and security families still groan in losses and pains that the last violent Endsars protest occasioned. Lagos State is still nurturing the wounds orchestrated by some violent Endsars protesters and not fit to accommodate such protest for now.

“In the light of the above, the Lagos State Police Command, therefore, warns those who might want to disguise under Endsars protest to cause another set of mayhem, brouhaha and violence in the state, to desist from such plans as the police and other security agencies will not fold their arms seeing individuals or groups orchestrating another violence and anarchy in the state.

“The Command also warns parents and guardians to warn and discourage their children and wards from being lured into any act, gathering or protest capable of causing violence in the state.

“The Command wishes to reiterate that any unlawful gathering, procession or protest will be suppressed professionally in accordance with the provisions of the law. The police command encourages Lagosians and those who are in Lagos for their genuine engagements, to go about their lawful businesses as all hands are on deck to maintain law and order within the length and breadth of Lagos State.”

Tottenham beat Arsenal 2-0 to top EPL table

A crowd of 2,000 Tottenham fans enjoyed their return for the first time in nine months as Harry Kane and Son Heung-min combined again to beat Arsenal 2-0 and move back top of the Premier League on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho’s men moved two points clear of Chelsea at the summit with another statement performance to display their credentials to win a first league title in 60 years.

Kane and Son have now scored a combined 27 goals in all competitions this season and also turned provider for each other to catch Arsenal cold on the counter-attack.

At the other end of the table, a fifth defeat in seven league games for the Gunners leaves Mikel Arteta’s men languishing in 15th.

Arsenal also lost £45 million ($59 million) midfielder Thomas Partey to the recurrence of a thigh injury, which played its part in Son teeing up Kane for Spurs’ second goal just before the break.

Tottenham are now unbeaten in 10 league games and look prime contenders to make the most in a dip in the standards set by an injury-hit Liverpool and Manchester City in recent seasons should they keep Kane and Son fit.

The South Korean opened the scoring in stunning fashion as he collected Kane’s pass down the left and cut inside to curl into the top corner.

That was the 10th of Son’s 13 goals this season for which Kane provided the assist.

By contrast, Arsenal have scored just 10 goals in 11 league games all season and despite plenty of intricate build-up play, Arteta’s men again failed to provide any cutting edge in the final third.

The difference between the teams was summed up in first-half stoppage time as from what appeared a dangerous Arsenal attack, one long ball saw Spurs breaking with four against two as Partey had already pulled up with an injury.

Son took his time before feeding Kane, who smashed in off the underside of the bar from a narrow angle to double Tottenham’s lead and realistically end any doubt over the outcome given Arsenal’s struggles in front of goal.

Lagos car wash expert arrested in Ogun for allegedly stealing customer’s vehicle

A car wash expert, Idris Ayotunde, has been arrested in Ogun State with a car he allegedly stole from one of his customers, Daily Post report.

Ayotunde, the police said, was nabbed on Friday with the maroon-coloured Ford car, with registration number EPE 707 FM, “which he stole from his customer in Lagos.”

The suspect was arrested at Alakija village via Olodo area of Ogun State at about 8:17am by the safer highway patrol team, who were on stop-and-search duty along Abeokuta/Ibadan highway.

The Ogun police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi said “the team stopped the car and demanded for its documents which the suspect was unable to produce, consequent upon which, he was taken to Odeda divisional headquarters where he was interrogated by the DPO, CSP Ajayi Williams.”

It was at this point that the DPO found out that the suspect actually stole the car, Oyeyemi disclosed.

“The suspect, who claimed to be an OND holder from a polytechnic in one of the South Western states, explained that he joined a car wash situated at Jimoh bus stop, Shasha Akowonjo in Lagos State, not up to one month.

“He stated further that the owner of the car brought it for vacuum cleaning and handed over the key to him. Since they don’t have vacuum engine in their own car wash, he decided to take it to another car wash nearby but he changed his mind on the road and bolted away with the car,” the police hinted.

According to Oyeyemi, the suspect was on his way to Ibadan where he intended to dispose of the car, but he was accosted by the policemen and subsequently arrested.

Meanwhile, the owner of the car, one Mrs. Shofidiya Tosin, has been contacted and equally confirmed that the car was stolen from her.

Queen Elizabeth will take COVID-19 vaccine, then leave seclusion

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip will take the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine and will “let it be known” they have done so.

The Times newspaper reported this Sunday, citing anonymous royal aides.

The 94-year-old monarch and her 99-year-old spouse are likely to be among the first to be offered a jab.

This is because they fall among elderly people that government has prioritised to receive the vaccine first as it begins the rollout of the vaccine this week.

Government endorsed the vaccine for use on Dec. 2, the first country to do so.

The queen is highly admired in British society, and her public backing for the vaccine would be a powerful message to counter anti-vaccination misinformation circulating online.

The coronavirus pandemic has killed more than 60,000 people in the United Kingdom and infected more than 1.7 million.

The royal family has not been untouched, with both heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles and his eldest son Prince William testing positive for COVID-19 earlier in the year.

Under the government’s priority list for the vaccine roll-out, the first doses are intended to be given to elderly care home residents and their carers, followed by people over 80 and health service staff.

The Times said that in 1957, the queen made public that Charles and his sister Princess Anne, then 8 and 6, had been inoculated against polio, helping to ease concerns about potential side-effects of what was then a new vaccine.

One person has been killed as a fuel tanker laden with diesel lost control and fell in front of a Toyota car, marked EKY 471 BR, along the Benin-Ijebu-Ode highway in Ogun State.

The accident occurred around 7:40 am on Sunday.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement (TRACE) Corps Spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident, saying the tanker was registered as LNU 392 ZU.

Akinbiyi informed that the dead victim, who was the driver of the Toyota car, has been deposited at the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, adding that the driver of a Volvo truck with registration number, APP 595 XW, has been arrested for driving against traffic and being the cause of the road crash.

According to Akinbiyi, “the Toyota vehicle was on its right lane, inbound Lagos from Benin/Ore, along the Ijebu/Ode-Benin/Ore Expressway, while the Volvo truck that caused the crash through route violation( Driving in a direction prohibited by traffic law – One Way) was outbound Lagos to Benin/Ore, on the Ijebu/Ore Benin/Ore Expressway.

“However, the diesel tanker behind the Toyota vehicle couldn’t control its speed, lost control and fell on its side, spilling its content. But thank God there was no fire outbreak.

“The driver and motor boy of the Volvo Truck have been arrested and taken to Igbeba Police Station, Ijebu-Ode.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State traffic agency has admonished, “drivers of articulated vehicles to desist from driving in a direction prohibited by traffic law because of its attendant consequences, more so that the harmattan is setting in and driving skills are challenged.”

Victor Osimhen makes stunning revelation on claims that Nigerian doctors worsened his injury

Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, has debunked reports that Nigerian doctors worsened his shoulder injury.

On Saturday, Tuttosport claimed Super Eagles medical personnel did more damage to the 21-year-old’s injury, by trying to fix his dislocated shoulder immediately on the field.

Osimhen dislocated his shoulder during Nigeria’s 4-4 draw against Sierra Leone in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture on November 13.

He is yet to fully recover from the setback, but has begun individual training sessions at the Serie A club.

After coming across the story on Twitter, Osimhen reacted by describing it as a false story.

“Not true tho,” he wrote after quoting the report.

Osimhen has scored two goals in eight appearances for Gennaro Gattuso’s side so far this campaign.

I hated my body when my br€asts were bigger than my ass ― Charity Nnaji

Nollywood actress Charity Nnaji reveal she used to be very busty in her secondary school days and she hated it.

She said she would rather have the back than the front as she shared her frustration with Potpourri, saying she hated how she looked when younger because her front was in excess.

“I used to be very busty in my secondary school days. My bum was very very flat and hated it. I hated my body basically because my breast was bigger than my a's's but right now I think my as's is bigger and it suits my body now. If there was anything my exes gave me credit for, is my body. I have a soft body.

I know of a guy that would always call me on the phone just to tell me how he feels about my body, he would say my body is soft like Agege bread.

The actress also said it is not wrong for a woman to flaunt her endowments.

“As an entertainer, it is not wrong to flaunt one’s gifts of nature. Yes, a woman should flaunt her endowments. To me, I feel if you don’t showcase what you have that means there is something wrong with your body that you don’t want the public to see. While most men believe in what they see women tend to believe what they hear. So, let’s show them what they want to see.

Charity Nnaji is a divorcee with three kids. She walked out of her 13 years old marriage as a result of domestic violence. She has since been living it up as an actress. She recently featured in Clash of Royalty, Travail and Shark.

Air Force graduates 203 Special Forces, CSAR operatives to battle insurgents, bandits

The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, has graduated a fresh batch of 203 Special Forces and Combat Search and Rescue Personnel.

The combined graduation ceremony, which took place on Saturday at the Regiment Training Centre (RTC) Annex in Bauchi, comprised 162 students of the SF Course 7/2020 and 41 trainees of CSAR Course 3/2020.

The graduating SF Course is the ninth set to be trained by the NAF in the last five years, having conducted 7 SF Courses and 2 SF Instructors’ Courses, while the graduating CSAR Course is the third batch, following the graduation of the second set in May 2020.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, charged the graduating participants to bring to bear the professional skills acquired on the ongoing campaign to restore normalcy to restive parts of the country.

According to him, the personnel were graduating at a time when the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, and the country were in need of their special skills.

“Your job will not be an easy one, as you would be required to operate under austere conditions and in hostile environments to ensure that the NAF achieves its objectives,” he said.

He further stated that in order to bridge the capability gap in SF and CSAR operations, the NAF established the Special Operations Command (SOC) with its headquarters in Bauchi and Quick Response Groups/Wings (QRG/QRW) in Gusau, Owerri, Ipetu-Ijesha, Daura, Birnin Gwari, Agatu, Gembu and Lafia, among others.

While acknowledging that the number of QRGs/QRWs was not yet adequate, the CAS observed that the establishment of these SF units provided the desired spread across the country.

This, he said, was in addition to the 205 CSAR Group (205 CSARG) in Kerang, Plateau State.

Speaking further, the CAS noted that consolidating on the gains made, the Service recently activated the 203 Combat Reconnaissance Group in Gombe and 215 Forward Operating Base, Funtua, the establishment of which was approved earlier this month, for enhanced capability in providing timely and actionable intelligence to further contain insecurity.

Air Marshal Abubakar disclosed that the NAF had, subsequently, trained over 1,200 personnel both overseas and locally in its bid to generate SF and CSAR teams to man the established units.

According to him, international training partners were also engaged to train NAF personnel in order to sustain SF training in the NAF.

Since its inception, he said, the NAF SF has been used effectively for force protection, force projection as well as base defence, among others.

“I am happy to note here today that our SF personnel have performed commendably well when deployed in conjunction with other security agencies in various theatres of operation.

“Their performance has proven that enhancing the capacity and capability of our personnel is the best way of ensuring the attainment of our operational goals and objectives,” he said.

The consideration to train CSAR operatives locally, the Air Force boss revealed, was as a result of insufficient training slots and high cost of overseas training.

He further disclosed that the Directorate of Regiment was accordingly tasked to develop a local training curriculum with the objective of ensuring that the NAF has personnel capable of rescuing downed aircrew in all terrains and weather conditions anywhere in Nigeria.

“It is indeed gratifying to note that their training here is yielding the expected benefits.

“More so, it is evident that there is a remarkable improvement in the quality of training with the demonstration I earlier witnessed from both courses,” he said.

FIFA approve maternity leave for female players

FIFA approved a new measure on Friday that will change women's football forever, with mothers now able to have their salary guaranteed for 14 weeks while also having medical support.

Until now, many female players had had to cut their careers short in order to tend to their children, but now they will have more support from FIFA.

"If we are serious about boosting the women's game, we have to look at all these aspects," FIFA president Gianni Infantino told reporters.

"Female players need to have stability in their careers and if they take maternity leave, they should not have to worry about when they are ready to play again."

The rules will apply all over the world

How we were deceived, lured to Ogun baby factories –Pregnant teenagers

There were tears in the eyes of Favour, a 17-year-old mother, who betrayed her emotions as she narrated her experience in a baby factory – usually an illegal facility housing pregnant women, sometimes against their will, and offering their babies for sale.

“I slept off after I gave birth to my baby and when I woke up, I could not find my child beside me. When I asked about the whereabouts of my newborn baby, a sum of N100,000 was sent to me,” she said, her voice cracking.

Favour and five others shared a similar fate at the baby factories where they were found in Abaren village, Ofada, and on Lagos Street, Mowe in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state, both in Ogun State.

While Favour was not lucky as she had barely given birth and had the chance to savour the joy of motherhood before her baby was sold, the others had not given birth before the facilities were raided by the police.

A woman identified as Mrs Florence Ogbonna, and suspected to be the brains behind the syndicate, is reportedly at large, but her daughter, a physically challenged man, said to also be involved and her driver were arrested.

The pregnant teenagers and one 20-year-old woman were reportedly transported separately to Ogun State from Imo, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers and Ebonyi states under the disguise of securing jobs for them. They were identified as Favour Christopher, 17, from Rivers; Julianah Wilson, 17, from Akwa Ibom; Okechukwu Ifunaya, 17, from Ebonyi, Igwe Blessing, 15, from Imo; Orji Gift, 19, from Imo and the eldest, Gift Etim, 20, from Rivers State.

Sharing her experience, Favour said she was impregnated by her boyfriend, who failed to take responsibility for it. In the process of picking up the pieces, she met a woman identified as Madam Joy, who offered to help her get a job.

Madam Joy reportedly took her to a park and handed her over to a driver, Kenneth Richman, whose job was to take such teenage girls to either of the two baby factories, according to the police. But soon after arriving at one of the baby factories, she was due for delivery. So she was blindfolded and taken to a place, where her baby was delivered.

Favour said, “My baby girl was delivered last Tuesday. I did not see the baby, I was only told. I don’t know the place where I gave birth to the baby. I was taken there at night and I was blindfolded. I left the place the same day my baby was delivered.

“When I asked for my baby, they said I should not worry about it. They said the woman that brought me there was waiting for me at a junction but when I got to the junction, I did not see her, I saw someone else. The person took me to the place where the woman was staying.

“They did not tell me that they had sold my baby; they only told me to send my account details. But since I didn’t have any bank account, I begged a lady there (one of the pregnant teenagers there) to let me use her bank account and the money was sent to her account. She showed me proof when the N100,000 was paid into her account.”

When asked about what she intended to do next, Favour, whose eyes had become puffy from crying, said, “I’m planning to go back to Port Harcourt, Rivers State. I want to go back to school. I dropped out when I was in Junior Secondary School 3.

“I don’t even know the name of the person that sent the money to me. I don’t know where my baby is or the woman that took her. I feel bad about this. I called the boy that impregnated me several times before I came to Ogun State but he did not answer his phone.”

Like Favour, Julianah was impregnated by her boyfriend in her village in Akwa Ibom.

Julianah was taken to the baby factory by her uncle, whom according to her, told her she would be living with his friend in Ogun State.

“He told me that I would return to Akwa Ibom in December. And since I got here, I have not seen him and he has not spoken to me,” she said.

“I was not aware that they were selling babies here. When I got here, I did not see any pregnant girl. I only saw a woman with her children when I came in November.”

She, however, said when she learnt about what happened to Favour, she became agitated and wanted to run away but did not have any money to do that.

“When Favour came, she said she did not see her baby. When I heard that they took her baby, I wanted to run away but I did not have any money on me. Soon after, the police arrested us.”

Ifunaya said she got to the baby factory in the process of searching for a means to take care of her unborn child.

“I was in my village when one of my friends told me about a place where they could help me. She said they would take care of me and I would be working. She said they would split my income into two and that one part would be used to take care of my child; I didn’t know they were selling babies there,” she said.

Ifunaya said expectant mothers at the baby factory were not allowed to move freely.

“I was impregnated by my boyfriend in my village in Ebonyi. He agreed to take responsibility for the baby but he was not working and didn’t have any means to take care of me and my unborn child. So, I decided to look for money on my own,” she said.

The story of 15-year-old Blessing is similar to the ones told by others as her boyfriend who impregnated her also denied responsibility. She was hawking boiled eggs at motor parks in Imo State when she met a woman who facilitated her trip to the baby factory in Ogun.

She said, “As one Morris was buying eggs from me, she asked if I was pregnant and I said yes. She said she would help me take care of my baby and that I would be able to go to school. She asked if my mum knew that I was pregnant and I told her that everyone knew about it. Then, she asked if I would follow her to Lagos, but she brought me to Ogun State.

“I got pregnant in April 2020, and I came to Ogun State in August 2020. When I got to the home (baby factory) the woman (the operator) told me she would send me to school and take care of my baby.”

After Orji lost both her parents, living became very tough. So, she asked the leader of the syndicate, who is her aunt, for help. She ended up at a baby factory. But Orji was not pregnant before joining others at the home. It was after she got to Ogun State that she was impregnated by her boyfriend in Mowe.

Orji said, “The woman is aunt. I call her mummy because she takes care of me. My dad and mum have died. When my dad died, my mum was taking care of me and when my mum died, the woman started taking care of me. After my mum’s burial, I asked if I could follow her to Lagos and she said okay. That was how we came to Ogun State.

“I dropped out in primary six. When my aunt asked me what vocation I was interested in, I said hairdressing. So, I became an apprentice hairdresser at Mowe. The person that impregnated me did not deny it. He lives in Mowe and promised to come back. I’m six months pregnant now.”

For 20-year-old Etim, who is also pregnant, his husband took her to the baby factory with their two children and promised to come back for them but he never did.

Etim said, “In 2015, I met the father of my babies at a fast food restaurant in Port Harcourt where I was working at the time. I got pregnant and had my first child on May 11, 2015. Then there was a time he wanted to go for his uncle’s burial and asked me if I wanted to go with him. I said no because I was not feeling well at the time. I told him that he should go alone and he left. He took me to the home (baby factory) and said he would return to pick me up. I’m pregnant but at that time, I didn’t know why he brought me to the home.

“My husband did not give me money when he was leaving us. Then the police came and arrested us. My husband is a mechanic in Akwa Ibom.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, while reacting to the development, described it as unfortunate.

He said the police raided the homes following tip-offs from residents of the neighbourhoods where the baby factories were being operated.

Oyeyemi said, “It’s quite unfortunate that barely 24 hours after we uncovered a baby factory, we discovered another one in the same area. From our investigation, we discovered that they are working together. Some girls were rescued. One of them is pregnant, while another one just had a baby. But as soon as she had the baby, it was taken away from her. They sold the baby and gave her N100,000. One of them is heavily pregnant.”

Vector reveals why he stopped entering for The Headies, other awards

Nigerian rapper, Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, popularly known as Vector has revealed why he stopped entering for the Headies and other awards.

The rapper in a post via his Twitter account on Saturday said he intentionally removed himself from getting involved in such competitions because he scrapped the idea of having to outdo other artists.

He also stated that he stopped competing with other rappers because he knows he can “easily beat them one on one.”

The rapper further revealed that he’s grown now and awards don’t mean anything to him anymore, adding that he doesn’t also care about money or clout and only wants to make music.

“Intentionally removed myself from the idea that I have to outdo mode9. It’s not necessary.

“Ask him about me in the studio and he will tell you. I don’t care about clout. I just want to make music. F*ck money too. That sh*t comes and goes anyway.

“I known how much my deal is worth as a rapper. But that’s not me because bragging only brings fake people around you anyways.

“Stay humble and live easy. Accolades are just accolades.

“Peace to everybody who deserves peace. As for the Headies, I stopped entering for it because I don’t want to compete with rappers (I can easily beat them on a one on one but that was Unilag).

“I’m grown now. Awards actually don’t mean anything to me anymore. Let new people win awards,” he said.
