Nigeria's recession could last up to 2023 - World Bank

The World Bank (WB) has predicted three years of economic recession for Nigeria except economic reforms are sustained.

“In the next three years, an average Nigerian could see a reversal of decades of economic growth and the country could enter its deepest recession since the 1980s,” the latest World Bank Nigeria Development Update (NDU) released on Thursday said.

The Bank argues “that this path could be avoided if progress in the current reforms is sustained and the right mix of policy measures is implemented.”

The report, titled: “Rising to the Challenge: Nigeria’s Covid response”, takes stock on the recently implemented reforms and proposes policy options to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and foster a resilient, sustainable, and inclusive recovery.

“Nigeria is at a critical historical juncture, with a choice to make”, said Shubham Chaudhuri, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria.

He said further that: “Nigeria can choose to break decisively from business-as-usual, and rise to its considerable potential by sustaining the bold reforms that have been taken thus far and going even further and with an even greater sense of urgency to promote faster and more inclusive economic growth.”

The latest World Bank NDU also projected that “the economy could shrink up to 4 percent in 2020 following the twin shocks of COVID-19 and low oil prices.

“The pace of recovery in 2021 and beyond remains highly uncertain and subject to the pace of reforms.”

ASUU strike: UNIABUJA moves to virtual classroom

The University of Abuja UNIABUJA, has moved to virtual classroom.

The VC said the university had developed an effective and trustworthy virtual teaching system for its students to ensure the process of teaching and learning was not disrupted currently and in future.

It said more than 5,000 students are receiving lectures from adjunct staff following the strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) since March.

He said the Covid-19 pandemic made the university to make use of its in-house skills and resources to develop the virtual classroom system.

“We have conducted pilot studies from April/May and I am happy to announce that the UNIABUJA virtual classroom system has piloted courses taught mainly by our adjunct lecturers because we know that our respected academic workers are on strike and are having continued engagements with the Federal Government.”

Covid-19: PTF accuses religious bodies of sabotage

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Covid-19 Control on Thursday accused some religious organisations of flouting national response guidelines by holding large crowd events.

It also said that a second wave of the pandemic may have begun, considering the rising infections.

PTF Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF)  Boss Mustapha, who spoke during a briefing, said the pandemic’s impact has resulted in mental health issues, drug use and gender-based violence.

He said: “We have observed, rather sadly, that Nigerians, particularly some faith-based organisations, have continued to hold events of large gatherings capable of spreading the virus.

“The PTF urges all sub-national entities that signed the protocols with these organisations and have primary responsibility for enforcing the protocols to step up their roles of enforcement.”

On how to address the mental health issues, Mustapha said: “The solution is to exercise enormous self-restraint and vigilance.

“The PTF urges that citizens should take advantage of the mental health programmes nearest to them. In Abuja, for example, the Federal Medical Centre in Jabi is the facility to visit.”

According to him, the country’s COVID-19 infections witnessed significant increase after a period of low numbers.

“The analysis shows that the 1,607 new confirmed cases are higher than the numbers recorded in the week of Nov. 29 – December 5, when a total of 1,102 cases were recorded,” he said.

Man tells fiancée she can't wear a white wedding dress because she's not 'pure'

A man who convinced his fiancée not to wear white on their wedding day has been slammed for being "controlling".

The anonymous man, 32, who comes from a "very religious household" explained that it is against his family's traditions for his partner, 23, to wear a white dress.

He said: "So me and my soon-to-be wife are planning to get married in a few months.

"I come from a very religious household with strong Christian beliefs and one of the traditions in my family is if the woman getting married isn't still a virgin they shouldn't wear a white dress on their wedding day."

But the reason why has sparked outrage online.

He continued: "My family knows my soon to be wife wasn't a virgin when I met her because my mom asked me when I started dating her if she was pure, and I was honest and told her she had boyfriends before she met me."

Unsurprisingly, when he told his girlfriend, she wasn't happy.

"My wife was really upset when I asked her if she could wear a coloured dress on our wedding day but she agreed, so we're looking at getting glittery blue dress instead."

And now she's having second thoughts.

"She's saying she won't marry me because she's too humiliated by the whole situation, but I really don't see how it's a big deal."

Confused as to why his wife-to-be is annoyed with him, he shared the post to Reddit to ask users what he did so wrong - and they were quick to tell him.

One said: "This is sick, and I can't believe your GF stayed with you after this."

Another explained: "This is not a Christian tradition, nor is it a modern tradition. There is no 'Christian color' for virginity in marriage or anything else. Biblically, unmarried/virgin women wore multi-colored robes.

"Until the early 20th century, blue was the 'traditional' color of purity, and weddings were generally held with people wearing whatever their best clothes were. White became en-vogue because of Queen Victoria's white gown."

And a third added: "Making her parade down the aisle in something so ridiculous it's like you're trying to pin a giant scarlet letter on her.

"I think if you have such a poor opinion of her and want to cause her public embarrassment you should do her a favour and break up now."

Covid-19: Nigeria to get 20 million doses of vaccines

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 says Nigeria is working toward getting 20 million doses of vaccine on a first installment when the country begins to receive vaccines from other parts of the world.

Health minister Osagie Ehanire, who stated this at the  COVID-19 briefing on Thursday in Abuja,  said the first set of beneficiaries would be health workers who were exposed to the risk of infection on a daily basis.

Mr. Ehanire also said that any vaccine that would be administered in the country, would be subjected to certification by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the National Agency For Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The minister explained that the federal government was also working with the National Assembly to set aside funds for vaccines as vaccines were being rolled out.

Police invade court, re-arrest protesters charged with plot to oust Buhari, Emmanuel

A legal practitioner, Inibehe Effiong, has condemned “the desecration” of the judiciary in Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday, in a case involving President Muhammadu Buhari and Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel.

Four citizens, who took part in a peaceful protest led by End Bad Governance Initiative, were arrested by the Police on Tuesday outside Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

They are Idopise Ette Oton, Obot MfonGod, God’sfriend Michael and Victor Nta George.

The group had gone to the legislature to express their dissatisfaction with bad leadership, ASUU strike, freezing of accounts of End SARS protesters, border closure, increment in electricity tariff and fuel pump price, among others.

The demonstrators also kicked against the provisions in the 2021 budget presented to the House by Emmanuel.

In a statement on Thursday, Effiong said they were “illegally charged before the Magistrate’s Court in Uyo presided over by Chief Magistrate Winifred Umohandy with fraudulent, malicious and frivolous charge of forming intention to overthrow President Buhari and Governor Emmanuel.”

He noted that upon their arraignment, objection was raised to the competence of the treasonable felony charge on the ground that the Magistrate’s Court lacks jurisdiction.

Chief Magistrate Winifred Umohandy struck out the charge and discharged the four protesters.

Effiong said as the Magistrate stepped into her chambers, policemen invaded the courtroom located at Fulga Street, Off Ikot Ekpene Road, Uyo, brutalized the citizens and took them away.

“The protesters, who were freed by the court are still in the custody of the police. This shameful action by governor Udom Emmanuel is only the latest in a string of dictatorial actions that Mr Udom Emmanuel has carried out since he came to office.

“It is shameful that Udom Emmanuel, who pretends to be an opposition leader in the country, has desecrated the hallowed temple of justice in his bid to quell all forms of dissent in the State.

“It is distasteful that the recently posted Police Commissioner, CP Amiengheme Andrew, has reduced the State Police Command to a political weapon for corrupt politicians, and allowed himself to be used as tool by the governor to witch-hunt citizens who are merely exercising their rights under the Nigerian Constitution.”

The lawyer demanded the immediate release of the protesters.

He urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), civil society, human rights activists, the media, and the international community to rescue Akwa Ibom people and “halt the reign of terror of the Emmanuel-led regime.”
