Beyonce's daughter, Blue Ivy, gets first Grammy nomination

The daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z is following in her parents' footsteps in a major way: She just scored her first Grammy nomination at the tender age of 8.

The musical protégé is up in the category for Best Music Video for "Brown Skin Girl," alongside Beyoncé and WizKid, after the Recording Academy recently updated the list of nominated artists to include her as one of the contenders.

Blue Ivy is competing against Drake's "Life is Good," Anderson .Paak's "Lockdown," Harry Styles' "Adore You" and Woodkid's "Goliath." Notably, she's just one year older than the youngest-ever Grammy honoree, Leah Peasall, whose group The Peasall Sisters won Album of the Year, Soundtrack in 2001.

Blue earned her first BET Award in June for "Brown Skin Girl," which was included in The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack album. And it's not her first time collaborating with her mom—she co-starred in the music videos for "Spirit" and "Formation" as well.

Christmas celebrations could turn to tears – WHO chief

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday cautioned that Christmas celebrations could turn to tears if people fail to keep up their guard against COVID-19 during the festive season.

Speaking to at a news conference, WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the period could turn to sadness if precautions are disregarded.

Tedros said the number of deaths in the coronavirus pandemic was surging and urged people to think very carefully about their holiday season plans.

In his words, “The festive season is a time to relax and celebrate but… celebration can very quickly turn to sadness if we fail to take the right precautions.

“As you prepare to celebrate over the coming weeks, please, please consider your plans carefully. If you live in an area with high transmission, please take every precaution to keep yourselves and others safe.

“That could be the best gift you could give — the gift of health.”

He added that there had been a 60 per cent increase worldwide in deaths from the respiratory disease over the past six weeks.

Herdsmen attack two, kill prominent Oyo farmer Aborode

The Chief Executive Officer, Kunfayakun Green Treasures Limited, Fatai Aborode, has been reportedly killed by suspected herdsmen near his farm along Apodun village in Oyo State on Friday.

It was gathered that Aborode, a politician and prominent farmer, was killed just as he was leaving his farm around 4pm in company with his manager on a motorbike.

The manager (name not given), who was said to have escaped gunshots, reportedly ran for his life.

A source, who gave his name simply as Seyi, said, “Suspected Fulani herdsmen just killed a former house of representatives candidate on the platform of Accord Party during the 2015 general poll in Igangan, Ibarapa North West Local Council Development Authority, Dr Fatai Aborode.

“He was attacked by the hoodlums on his farm, he was macheted severally and he died while being rushed to a nearby hospital. He went to farm with one person on bike. On their way coming from the farm, they met the Fulani men. The other person escaped.”

Efforts to get the reaction of the police were abortive as calls made to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olugbenga Fadeyi, rang out. A text message sent to him was also not replied.

It was further gathered that no arrest had been made as of the time of filing this report.

The killing of Aborode happened less than 24 hours after an agric stakeholder meeting held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, in respect of the recurrent attacks by herdsmen in the area.

Man Utd vs Man City: When you lose, you get sacked – Guardiola reminds Solskjaer

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has said his Manchester United counterpart, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not need his support, as pressure builds on him ahead of Saturday’s derby.

United go into the game one place and one point above City.

However, Solskjaer is under intense scrutiny, after the Red Devils were eliminated from the Champions League this week and dropped down into the Europa League.

Their exit saw Solskjaer becoming the bookmakers’ favourite to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job.

A negative result against Guardiola’s men will only increase the heat on the 47-year-old.

But Guardiola does not think Solskjaer requires his sympathy.

He told Sky Sports: “That’s why we get a lot of salary!

“Important is to know the value of Solskjaer is there – no doubt about this. I don’t have to give him support because he is strong enough.

“He knows how it works, this job; when we win, we are a genius and when we lose, we have to be sacked. It happens in United and all the clubs around the world. This is the reality.”

I have no plan to leave Woli Agba –Dele

Olamide Oladimeji, popularly known as Dele, is a social media comedian with over 453,000 followers, who he often appears in skits with his colleague, Woli Agba.

He tells Tofarati Ige about his career and other issues

Excerpt below..

How did you start your social media comedy career?

It started way back with a ministry called Christ Chosen Vessel Dance and Drama Ministry, popularly known as Alfa Sule. God gave me the gift of playing drums and I love it so much. Back then, I usually moved around looking for posters of upcoming events that I could attend.

On one fateful day in 2005, I went for a concert and I saw members of the Alfa Sule group, who were invited to perform at the event. I then walked up to a friend of mine who was a member of the ministry and asked him how they operated because I wanted to join them. I then joined them and over time, I got closer to Woli Agba (Ayo Ajewole), who I love so much. Everybody knows he has the gift of singing and since I had the gift of playing drums, whenever he was going for ministrations, I always followed him.

However, it was not until about 2016 that he started his skits. I recall that on that day, members of the group were busy as we were going for a programme. He just came in and showed us a video on his phone, saying he had an idea. After our ministration, I called and told him I loved the skit he showed us on his phone earlier and that whenever he wanted to do anything like that, he should call me.

Two days later, my mum sent me on an errand and I was on a motorcycle when he called me and said he had an idea. I immediately turned back to go and meet him, and we did the skit. That was how we made our first skit.

In that particular skit, I assisted him with his luggage and when we got to his house, I waited for some time. When he came out after some time and saw me, he said he would have given me some money but he did not have loose change. I then told him to bring the money, that I would get loose change.

However, the skit that made me popular as ‘Dele’ was the one where I took a dog to the church to be a guard. In the course of telling me that he didn’t want the dog, he called me ‘Dele’, and that was how the name stuck.

Do you have plans to do solo skits?

Not really. For now, I am okay with Woli Agba. I have been working with him since 2005 and there have been no issues. Once God has destined two people to be together, it is better left that way. Some people call and tell me I am the one making the skits interesting.

But, I don’t pay attention to them. I don’t allow myself to be distracted by things like that. I know where we are coming from and what I’ve gained from our association.

Senators express shock as petroleum ministry spends N116m on pens, others

Members of the Senate Public Accounts Committee expressed shock on Thursday when the report of the Auditor General for the Federation revealed that officials of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources spent N116m to buy biros, letterhead and toners in one year.

The breakdown of the expenditure showed that the ministry spent N14.5m to purchase Schneider biros, N46m to print the ministry’s letterhead and N56m to procure toner for its photocopy machines.

The AuGF stated this in his 2015 audit report currently being scrutinised by the Senate committee led by Senator Mathew Urhoghide.

The query by the Office of the AuGF reads, “The contract for the supply of Schneider biros worth N14.5m was split into smaller packages of less than N5m each and was awarded to four different companies in order to circumvent the permanent secretary’s approval threshold of N5m.

“Similarly, the contract for the printing of the ministry’s letterhead worth N46m was also split and awarded to 11 different contractors.

“Also, the contract for the supply of toners worth N56m was split and awarded to seven different contractors. The permanent secretary has been requested to explain this contravention of the Public Procurement Act 2007.”

The Chairman of SPAC asked the representative of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Godwin Akubo, to respond to the query by the AuGF.

The ministry, in its response, said, “The action of the ministry was a quick response to the needs of the various departments in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. These awards followed normal rules and procedures.

“The contracts were not split. They were awarded to the various contractors at different times when items were needed.

“The sum of N46.6m used for printing of letterhead followed due process and the large sum of money is explained by the volume of the produced for most of departments.”

Dissatisfied with the defence of the permanent secretary of the ministry, the chairman of the committee sustained the query.

He asked the committee secretariat to document the money spent and ask for the refund from the officers involved in the ministry.

20-year old Ogun herbalist kills hotelier to cover up his failed money ritual process

The Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 20-year-old herbalist, Misipode Dosu, for allegedly killing a hotelier, Jimoh Bello.

In a statement on Thursday, the command's spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the herbalist was arrested after several months of thorough investigations into the case.

The deceased, who was said to be the owner of J.B hotel in the Owode-Yewa area of the state, was found dead in the boot of his car on May 29 by men of the Idiroko divisional headquarters.

According to the police, Dosu, during interrogation revealed that the deceased had come to him for money ritual and paid N250,000 out of the N300,000 price he gave him to carry out the exercise.

The herbalist, however, said after some time, the deceased started disturbing him that he had not seen any result of the money ritual he paid for.

He added that since he was not able to deliver, he had to kill the hotelier by giving him some concoction to cover his tracks.

Dosu was said to have after that put the deceased into the boot of his car and drove the vehicle to a place where the corpse was recovered.

The statement added that the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, had already directed that the suspect be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction as soon as the investigation is concluded.

"The police team embarked on an intelligence-based investigation which led them to the arrest of the herbalist, Misipode Dosu, who happened to be the last person seen with the deceased," the statement read.

"On interrogation, the suspect confessed that the deceased contracted him for a money-making ritual of which he billed him the sum of N300,000 out of which the deceased had paid him N250,000. But after some time, the dead started pressuring him that he had not seen any positive outcome of the ritual.

"Out of fear that the deceased might report him to the police for obtaining money from him under false pretence, he invited him to come for the final stage of the ritual at Idiroko."

The police said that was where the murder took place.

Dame Barbara Windsor has died aged 83, her husband Scott Mitchell has announced.

The EastEnders and Carry On legend was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014, but kept her condition secret until symptoms started to show in 2018.

Nigeria's recession could last up to 2023 - World Bank

The World Bank (WB) has predicted three years of economic recession for Nigeria except economic reforms are sustained.

“In the next three years, an average Nigerian could see a reversal of decades of economic growth and the country could enter its deepest recession since the 1980s,” the latest World Bank Nigeria Development Update (NDU) released on Thursday said.

The Bank argues “that this path could be avoided if progress in the current reforms is sustained and the right mix of policy measures is implemented.”

The report, titled: “Rising to the Challenge: Nigeria’s Covid response”, takes stock on the recently implemented reforms and proposes policy options to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and foster a resilient, sustainable, and inclusive recovery.

“Nigeria is at a critical historical juncture, with a choice to make”, said Shubham Chaudhuri, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria.

He said further that: “Nigeria can choose to break decisively from business-as-usual, and rise to its considerable potential by sustaining the bold reforms that have been taken thus far and going even further and with an even greater sense of urgency to promote faster and more inclusive economic growth.”

The latest World Bank NDU also projected that “the economy could shrink up to 4 percent in 2020 following the twin shocks of COVID-19 and low oil prices.

“The pace of recovery in 2021 and beyond remains highly uncertain and subject to the pace of reforms.”
