Joshua knocks out Pulev to retain world heavyweight titles

British-Nigerian boxer, Anthony Joshua, knocked out Bulgarian boxer, Kubrat Pulev, in the ninthe round of their world title bout at the SSE Arena, Wembley, to retain his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles.

The fight is Joshua’s first since reclaiming his belts from Andy Ruiz in December 2019 in Saudi Arabia.

Both boxers were cautious in the first two rounds with Joshua using more of his jabs.

Pulev has been unbeaten in his last eight fights since losing via knockout to Wladimir Klitschko in 2014. The 39-year-old won 28 of his previous 29 with 14 by way of knockout.

South African referee Deon Dwarte stopped the fight after the ninth round knock down.

Rashford declares himself a Manchester United player for life

Marcus Rashford has declared himself a Manchester United player for life and ruled out ever playing for another club.

Ahead of the Manchester derby at Old Trafford against local rivals City, Rashford underlined his lifelong devotion to the red half of the city.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are among the clubs who could swoop for Rashford in the coming years, but the Manchester-born forward says his heart belongs to United.

"As a kid, I've never looked beyond Manchester United.

"I just want to do the best I can for the club whilst I'm here, so hopefully I'm here for the long-term."

Rashford was speaking after winning the Sport for Social Change award at Sports Journalists' Association British Sports Awards, for his campaigning work to ensure all vulnerable children receive free school meals.

FG rescues mother of four trafficked to Egypt by her brother

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has facilitated the return of a mother of four, Omowunmi Rhoda Aladeboyeje, allegedly trafficked to Cairo, Egypt.

The 35-year-old was reportedly tricked to Egypt by her elder brother, who informed her about a nursing job in the United States.

On receiving a distress call from her family, the commission contacted the Nigerian Mission in Cairo which rescued the victim from her captors.

Omowunmi, who left the country on March 17, 2020, arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, around 2 a.m on Saturday.

She was profiled by immigration officials and handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons in the presence of a representative of her family, Mr Benjamin Akinbobola.

A statement by the NIDCOM spokesman, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said the Ondo State indigene is presently on her way to Okitipupa, her hometown.

The statement said the NIDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, appealed to youths travelling out to be purposeful and beware of dangerous people trafficking them out for selfish and personal gains.

“The NIDCOM boss said Omowunmi’s story is the same as that of many victims lured abroad under the guise of securing them a job.”

“She insisted that the trafickers must be arrested, named, shamed and punished for their dastardly act,” the statement added.

17 year-old girl blinded by mystery illness sparked from squeezing 'harmless' nose spot

A teenager has been blinded by a mystery illness sparked from squeezing a seemingly harmless nose spot.

Mary Ann Regacho, 17, suffered severe facial swelling after simply popping a pimple on her nose last year.

The youngster originally thought the growth was a simple spot caused by hormones after she gave birth to a baby boy at age 16.

But, when she squeezed the spot, Mary said it grew painful days later before it started spreading across her face.

The teenager, from Nueva Ecija, the Philippines, said it "like a balloon inflating".

Now, the growth has mostly engulfed her face and has started to lead to blindless as the sever swelling reaches her eyes.

Mary said: "I thought it was only a common pimple, but it hurt so much I could not sleep at night. I tried everything to cure it but nothing worked.

"Now, I feel like my face will never be the same again."

Her husband, Albert Sales, who works in a neighbour’s farm without a steady income, was reportedly unable afford treatment or even medicine to help his wife.

After a year of suffering, Mary went to the hospital to have it checked out.

Mary was transferred to a bigger hospital where the family were again left unable to pay for medical bills.

Worried husband Albert  has now appealed to good Samaritans for help, appearing in a video saying: "I want to ask kind people for donations so we can finally send my wife to a hospital.

"We only earn enough for ourselves and our one-year-old baby so I can't afford her medical bills."

Sanwo-Olu Tests Positive For COVID-19

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has tested positive for COVID-19, the state’s Commissioner for Health announced on Saturday.

Akin Abayomi said the Governor is currently experiencing “mild symptoms and fatigue typical of a mild case of COVID.”

In a statement, he added that Sanwo-Olu is receiving treatment and is being closely monitored at home by a clinical team from the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba.

“Mr. Sanwo-Olu is doing well on treatment and rest and we are confident that he will recover quickly and clear the virus,” the statement said.

The Commissioner noted that the state is seeing a slightly increasing number of new COVID-19 cases and warned all residents and victors to adhere to the prescribed health guidelines such as social distancing and mask-wearing.

“The festive season is likely to create the opportunity for the virus to spread if we are not compliant with the regulations established by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) for inbound travellers and the festive season celebrations,” Abayomi said.

“All inbound travellers must be COVID-19 negative by PCR before they board a flight to Nigeria and must self-isolate on arrival and undergo a pre-booked test on Day Seven of arrival in Nigeria.

“Lagosians should keep celebrations to a minimum and be observant and responsible in their interactions. The significant gains achieved to date in containing COVID-19 in Lagos, which has allowed us to carefully reopen the economy, must not be reversed.

“No one is immune to this virus and it is certainly still circulating in the community.

“Please join me in praying and wishing the Incident Commander of the Lagos State COVID-19 response, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, a speedy recovery so he can return to normal duties as soon as possible.

“I will be keeping the public informed regularly of Mr. Governor’s recovery and wellbeing.”

Lekki shootings: CNN shuns Lagos Panel, says it has been excused

The Cable News Network (CNN) has refused to appear before the Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution of Victims of SARS Related Abuses.

The Lagos panel had invited CNN after the news platform published two major investigations into the events of October 20 at the Lekki toll gate.

The CNN report indicted the Nigerian military with the claims that they shot at unarmed protesters who had convened at the Lekki Toll Gate.

The panel’s summons was issued to CNN on November 28.

However, CNN instructed its lawyer, Olumide Babalola to file an objection on the ground that the panel lacks jurisdiction to summon them since they are not a business with physical operation in Nigeria.

The CNN objection, dated December 4, was filed on December 9.

When the panel sat on Saturday, the CNN lawyer was queried privately and he reiterated his objection.

The panel then excused CNN from further proceedings.

Nigerians spend over $1b buying citizenship, golden visas abroad

Some rich Nigerians have spent over $1billion this year alone buying themselves citizenship of other countries or golden visas as they plan ahead for safe haven should Nigeria collapse as a nation.

The $1billion is a conservative estimate, given the number of applications processed by the citizenship advisory firms.

According to a report published by Al Jazeera, more Nigerians paid for citizenship or golden visas this year, than in other years.

At London-based Henley & Partners, one of the world’s largest citizenship advisory firms, applications by Nigerians increased by 185 percent during the eight months to September 2020, making them the second-largest nationality to apply for such schemes after Indians.

More than 1,000 Nigerians have enquired about the citizenship of another country through Henley & Partners this year alone, which Paddy Blewer, head of marketing, said “is unheard of.

“We’ve never had this many people contacting us”, Blewer said.

Arton Capital, a citizenship advisory group, said demand from Nigerian families for Antigua and Barbuda citizenship is up 15 percent this year compared with the last.

St Lucia has also seen a record number of Nigerians applying in 2020. “It’s more than it’s ever been over the past four years,” says Nestor Alfred, CEO of the St Lucia Citizenship-by-Investment Unit.

The rush to escape from Nigeria reached the apogee in July, with the coronavirus epidemic raging.

Another propelling factor has been the recent #EndSARS protest, according to the report.

A Nigerian interviewed, cited the escalation of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria as a reason wealthy Nigerians started looking more seriously at citizenship abroad.

“Those with medical conditions that could not fly out – a lot of them are buying passports just because if there is any problem they can fly out,” said Olusegun Paul Andrew, 56, a Nigerian entrepreneur and investor who spends much of the year in the Netherlands.

“Flying out” of Nigeria is hard and not just because of the coronavirus pandemic. Just 26 countries allow Nigerian passport holders visa-free entry, many of them part of West Africa’s ECOWAS arrangement. Both the United Kingdom and Europe’s Schengen zone require Nigerians to obtain visas ahead of travelling.

For the wealthy, this is too much hassle. “They don’t want to be queueing for visas for any EU country or whatever,” says Andrew. Instead, why not purchase the citizenship of a country with visa-free access to Europe?

According to the report, the destinations of Nigerians seeking citizenship or golden visas are Malta and many Caribbean nations.

In Malta, all they need to do for citizenship is to have an investment of between $100,000 to $800,000 in the country.

In St Kitts and Nevis, a passport can cost as much as $400,000.

The passport opens doors to Europe and America, where they do not to get visas anymore.

Bimpe, a wealthy Nigerian who was interviewed for the report said she has three passports. One Nigerian, which she says she never uses, and two from Caribbean nations: St Kitts and Nevis; and Grenada.

“The St Kitts and Nevis passport, which cost her $400,000 via a real estate investment programme, was useful when she travelled between London and New York on business as it allows for visa-free travel to the UK and Europe. But now that she has retired in Abuja, Bimpe, whose husband has passed away, wants her three adult sons to have the same opportunities to travel and live abroad.

“My kids were interested in visa-free travel. They are young graduates, wanting to explore the world. So that was the reason for my investment,” she explains.

Iceberg Slim celebrates two years of alcohol abstinence

US-based Nigerian rapper, Olusegun Olowokere- Iceberg Slim, has taken to social media to celebrate two years of his alcohol abstinence.

The rapper who took to the gram to appreciate himself said the journey was not planned, but started just as a personal challenge.

He wrote;

“Two years ago, I decided to stop drinking alcohol. Many people asked questions, while many had assumptions as to “Why?”. The truth is, I woke up one day and decided to challenge myself. I said to myself “Self”, and I replied “Yes?”, how long do you think you can go without drinking alcohol?!

“It’s one of those challenges like when you try to get to the microwave at 00:01 right before the BEEP, or like when you’re throwing a piece of paper in the trash from across the room, and you do the countdown like you’re in the NBA Finals.

“There are no rewards for these self-imposed challenges, just the self-gratification of “Ahhh, I did it”.

“I first challenged myself to a month of no alcohol, and once I reached that milestone, I then said 3 months, then 6, then a year, and now it’s been 2 years. Thinking if I should commemorate this milestone with a drink🤷🏾‍♂️😩😂”

Many Nigerian graduates can’t read or write - Minister

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has decried continuous fall in the standard of education in the country. Adamu, who spoke in Yola, the Adamawa State capital during official commissioning of completed projects in the college, lamented a situation in which graduates can neither read nor write in a tolerable manner.

He said the situation was a cause for concern, adding that students and teachers need to sit up and face their tasks squarely if the situation is to be reversed.

“Some graduates of tertiary institutions across the country cannot read or write applications,” said the minister who was represented by the Director of Tertiary Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, Hajia Rakiya Gambo Iliyasu.
