Insurgents have attacked Tumur Town, a community in Niger Republic, which houses more than 40,000 refugees from Nigeria, Daily post reports.
The attack on Sunday according to some refugees, who called their relatives in Maiduguri, was very bloody, leaving over 51 people dead and causing many damages of property, including animals.
Most of the inhabitants of the town (Tumur) are people from Abadam Local Government Area of Borno state in Nigeria.
It could be recalled that a similar incident occurred in mid May this year, which prompted over 2000 households to relocate to Damasak in search of safety and protection.
Government officials and international organisations in Damasak told newsmen that the town of Damasak may experience continuation of movement of people from Niger (mass influx) in the coming days.
The officials called on the government and partners to begin to make preparation for essential items including food to respond to the immediate needs of the new arrivals.
A 33-year-old farmer, Osazee Agbontaen, has narrated to the Edo State Judicial Panel of Inquiry for victims of SARS and related abuses, how he allegedly lost his pregnant wife due to his unlawful detention by police operatives.
Agbontaen, who resides at Ekowe Community in Ovia Northeast Local Government area of the state, told the panel that his wife who gave birth by cesarean section died while he was remanded in prison custody.
He added that he was arrested unlawfully based on a petition written against him and was detained for two weeks before being sent to prison.
“I was at home when some policemen invaded my house at about 2am and started banging on my door. Because I didn’t open for them on time, they pounced on me and beat me up, dragged me on the ground before throwing me into their van.
“They took me to their station, where I spent almost two weeks in their custody before they remanded me in prison,” he said.
The petitioner added that his wife who was carrying an eight-month old pregnancy would not have died if he were around to assist her.
“It was while I was in the prison that my family members came to tell me that my wife has put to bed through cesarean section.
“Ten days later, they also came to inform me in the prison that she couldn’t make it and has died.
“I was confused when I heard the news of the death of my wife,” Agbontaen said.
He noted that upon thorough investigations, the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) and his Investigating Police Officer (IPO), came up to say he has no case to answer.
As if the death of his wife was not enough blow, the widower also complained that he lost everything he had and that while in the prison, his farm was overgrown with weeds, and that the left over parts of his farm was later destroyed by fire.

Thugs wielding dangerous weapons invaded the Arewa House Kaduna on Monday, where they ran after officials of the Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, who were there for a security summit.
Abdulaziz Suleiman, spokesman of the CNG, in a statement, explained that even security guards had to run for their lives.
According to him, “We regret to announce that armed thugs numbering hundreds were unleashed on the Arewa House venue of the security summit hosted by the Coalition of Northern Groups on Monday, December 14.”
“The Summit aimed to discuss ways to achieve synergy between communities and government security and design a uniform approach to the current security situation in the North.”
“Participants at the meeting included retired military officers, Retired Police officers, religious leaders, traditional rulers, various women, youth and trade associations.”
The CNG said just as the meeting was kicking off, ” sponsored armed thugs stormed the auditorium after subduing the civil guards at the gate.”
“The overturned tables shattered glasses, attacked the guests and officials, wounding several people and smashing vehicles parked in the premises.”
“It is disturbing that a battalion of armed thugs can stroll free across the streets of central Kaduna wielding dangerous weapons without the intervention of the security. Security only arrived hours after the thugs had left.”
“It is quite obvious now that some powerful forces are benefiting from the current security situation and would do everything for it to continue.”
“We are now all the more committed to ensuring the safety and security of the North and its people.”

More than 500 pregnancies were recorded in secondary schools of Benin’s northeastern department of Borgou during the 2019-2020 school year, the Beninese news agency (ABP) reports.
“Altogether, 547 out of 36,487 school girls regularly registered were pregnant during the 2019-2020 school year as against 431 cases in 2018-2019,” ABP reported, quoting Thomas Adam, a Representative of the child protection department of Secondary education and professional and technical training ministry.
Adam attributed the increase in the cases of pregnancies to the long cessation of classes observed during the coronavirus pandemic.
Although no strategy linked to the phenomenon was yet made public, several analysts of the Beninese society fear that the crisis linked to the Covid-19 affected the measures taken to eradicate early pregnancies in schools.

The Presidency has disagreed with Katsina State Governor, Bello Masari, over the number of boys abducted from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.
Masari had said on Sunday that 333 boys were still missing.
However, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, told the BBC Hausa Service that only 10 boys are with the bandits.
The BBC Hausa bulletin read, “The Government of Nigeria has said its security forces have surrounded the location where gunmen have kept schoolchildren abducted from a secondary school in Katsina State.
“Spokesman for the President, Mallam Garba Shehu, told the BBC only 10 children were remaining in the hands of the gunmen according to their colleagues who escaped from the gunmen. The number is below figures released by school authorities at the beginning. Garba Shehu said the school children who escaped said 10 of their friends were still with their abductors.”
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), who is currently in Daura, Katsina State, on vacation, had come under fire on social media for failing to visit the school where the boys were abducted.
Buhari instead sent a delegation from Abuja to visit the school and sympathise with their parents.
One Taiwo Daniel has demanded investigation into roles played by former Commander of Ilesa Area Command of Nigeria Police Force, Mr Joshua Atunise, in the death of his son, Babatunde.
Taiwo, in a petition filed before the panel investigating police brutality in Osun State by his counsel, Mr Femi Fafowora, explained on Saturday that the victim and his colleagues were arrested at Ilo Ijesa, Osun State, on November 28 by the police.
According to the petitioner, as of the time the deceased met his death allegedly in the hands of Atunise, he was a Higher National Diploma Mechanical Engineering student at the Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke.
He explained that his son was called by some of his colleagues in the campus-based paramilitary group, Cadet Corps, after they were detained at Ilo Ijesa by police while returning from an event.
He further explained that being their commandant, Babatunde went there and was arrested and labelled armed robbers along with colleagues by the police.
He said after much pleading, the policemen allowed them to go on the condition that Babatunde would pay N30,000.
“The refusal of Babatunde to yield to their demand made the policemen call Mr. Joshua Atunise, the Area Commander, informing him that they have nabbed some armed robbers. Atunise ordered that they should be brought to Area Commander’s Office in Ilesa where they were detained.
“Atunise again called them armed robbers, but the Babtunde insisted that he was never an armed robber. This infuriated Atunise, who shot Babatunde twice in the thigh.”
Daniel also said the victim and his other colleagues were later transferred to Osogbo and were later taken to Office of Special Anti Robbery Squad in Oke Baale Area, where the victim died on November 29, 2008.
He said other colleagues of the deceased were later arraigned, but legal advice from the Ministry of Justice exonerated them, adding that despite court orders that the corpse of the deceased should be released, the police had refused to obey the orders.
The chairman of the panel, Justice Akin Oladimeji (retd.), ordered that the hearing notice be sent to the respondents and adjourned the matter till December 17, 2020.

“We are still counting because more are coming out from the forest and we are calling through the numbers of those parents that have phone numbers to find out whether or not their children have gone back home.

The market chief of Ikire in Irewole Local Government Area, Osun State, Adegboyega Agbaje has told the Panel of Inquiry investigating police brutality and extrajudicial killings that he was suspended for three months after disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) officers handcuffed him back.
He said that he was arrested alongside his wife, Mrs. Misitura Agbaje, and was paraded with handcuffs in the market where he was presiding over as a chief.
Explaining, Chief Agbaje, said, “On August 18, 2020, at about 2 PM, five police officers in mufti but was wearing SARS jacket led by one Tosin. They stormed my house and asked if one Tunde Agbaje was my son, that he was involved in a robbery. I was arrested alongside my wife and was handcuffed back. We were taken to Nigerian Police Station in Ikoyi and later to Apomu. We were taken to Osogbo in search of my son. We were handcuffed for about 10 hours before we were released.
“I was suspended as a chief because of the arrest and unwarranted scenario by the Police. It was believed in the community that I had committed a grievous offence which was why I and my wife were handcuffed back. I was reinstated after three months when they see that I am not guilty of the offence the police arrested me for. I have official letters of both the suspension and my reinstatement.”
Chief Agbaje demanded the sum of N10 million over the unlawful arrest with handcuffs which he claimed he had suffered embarrassment, emotional ridicule and untold hardship on his personality as a community leader and a chief.
The Chairman of the Panel, Justice Akin Oladimeji said the counsel for the petitioner should write a final written address and adorned the matter to January 8, 2021.
