Katsina abduction: NUT threatens strike over insecurity in schools

Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), has expressed concerns over rising insecurity in schools following the recent abduction of over 300 students from Government Science Secondary School Kankara, katsina State.

To this end, the Union has threatened to down tools (strike) to register its discontent with the poor security situations in schools, and to also reawaken the consciousness of the Federal Government to the poor security situation in schools.

NUT Secretary General, Dr. Mike Ene, in a statement released in Abuja, on Tuesday, said the decision to abandon the classrooms has become necessary following unending threat to the lives of school children and their teachers.

He said: “The wicked and merciless hands of anti education terrorists clinched Mr. Alu Ola Paul, a Head teacher with Olagua Primary School Ohordua in Edo State, and Kidnapped him on his way to work on the 1st December, 2020, and released six day later.

“On 8th December, 2020, Mrs. Gladys Niemogha Belleh and Mrs. Blessing Emunefe, who are teachers of Ohorhe Secondary School, Effurun, Delta State, were kidnapped in their school premises by armed bandits and are yet to be released, thereby throwing both families, students, and the school community into emotional and overall destabilisation.

“Last Friday, Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, katsina State, was invaded by armed bandits with reports that 333 students are yet to be accounted for (as at Tuesday evening). This dastardly act has sent shivers through the spine of other members of the entire school community of Katsina state.

“These incidences are sad reminders of previous ugly events in Chibok and Dapchi, where Boko Haram terrorists attacked and abducted students creating monumental disruption of school activities and impeding educational growth and advancement, while subjecting family members and relatives to unimaginable trauma.

“The recent condemnable events of Bandits attack on schools, if not immediately addressed will largely affect the 2019/2020 academic calender which has already been disrupted by the six month long lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“NUT will not fold hands and watch enemies of educational development threaten the nations educational system to suffocation. As such, we wish to remind government of their primary responsibility as enshrined in the constitution which is the security of lives and property of the Nigerian citizens.

“In light of these recent developments, NUT may be compelled to down tools pending when it is considered safe for members to teach and guide pupils and students without fear of abduction by these faceless enemies of educational prosperity of the Nigerian Nation.”

The Union, thus, challenged the government to rise to the challenges and take up its responsibility to guarantee and execute the general principle and commitment of providing adequate security to all educational institutions and the nation at large.

It, however, admitted that government may not be able to provide security for the educational community across Nigeria, hence the appeal to stakeholders to join hands with the government and security agencies to provide adequate protection for the school communities, to ensure that educational activities are not hampered by enemies of the nations educational system using schools as soft targets.

Afghan man murders his Nigerian roommate in Portugal

45-year-old Afghanistan refugee has reportedly murdered a young Nigerian man, identified as Henry Onyekachi, in a circumstance which portrays religious intolerance in Lisbon, Portugal.

Onyekachi, 29, arrived the country some months ago as a refugee and was put in the same room with the unnamed Afghan refugee.

According to CM Lisbon, the incident happened on December 8, in Lisbon.

It was gathered that Onyekachi appealed for help from people around the area at that time, but no one responded to rescue him, till he bled to death.

Popular Lagos Prophet Israel Oladele to remain in prison as court refuses post conviction bail

Justice Olabisi Akinlade of an Ikeja High Court on Tuesday refused the post-conviction bail application filed by Israel Oladele Ogundipe, a televangelist, popularly known as ‘Genesis’ and the head of the ‘Genesis Parish of the Celestial Church of Christ’, Alagbado, Lagos.

Ogundipe was on Nov. 18 sentenced to a year in prison after being found guilty of the offences of conversion of property not delivered and stealing.

The televangelist, however, in a motion on notice for bail pending appeal asked the court for an order, admitting him to unconditional bail pending the hearing and determination of the appeal of his sentence.

Akinlade dismissed the application which was brought pursuant to Section 6(6) of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended paving way for the convict to continue serving his sentence at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

In a 16-paragraph affidavit sworn by his counsel, Mr Olanrewaju Ajanaku which is in support of his bail application, the televangelist said he was suffering from diabetes.

He noted that he could not follow a strict diet and the constant specialised medical attention in custody and this has taken a toll on his health making him be gaunt in appearance.

He also noted that prior to his incarceration, he was suffering from hypertension, peptic ulcer and unending malaria which had worsened his health challenges since his Nov. 18 conviction.

The state in its counter-affidavit which was sworn by the prosecutor Mrs Rotimi Odutola prayed the court to refuse the application of the convict.

She noted that the trial had spanned several years and there was never a time the convict complained about his state of health.

Odutola said:

“It is now he is alluding to facts about his alleged state of health now that he has being in custody for barely three weeks.”

“Indeed if his health status truly requires treatment, the correctional centres also have a procedure for referral where an inmate’s health case so demand without the prompting of anyone.”

However, ruling on the application, the court held that Ogundipe had not proved any special circumstances that could persuade the court to do so.

The judge noted that the Court of Appeal Practice Direction 2013 provides for quick hearing of criminal matters.

“The convict has not shown any medical records of his illness. Also he has not been to the prison hospital for treatment. So his appeal can be heard early by the Court of Appeal,” Akinlade said.

Ogundipe was was arraigned in 2009 for obtaining money by stealing, inducing delivery of money by false pretenses, unlawful conversion of property and forgery.

He was alleged to have fraudulently obtained between 2002 and 2005 the sums of N14million and 12,000 pounds in various tranches from a London-based architect, Mrs Oladele Williams-Oni who had approached him for spiritual assistance.

The judge had in the judgment ordered that Ogundipe should repay the complainant, the sum of N11million, part of the funds illegally obtained from her.

The offences contravene Sections 390(9), 419 and 467(1)(b) of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos 2003.

Tenant r.a.p.e.s landlord’s granddaughter in Osun

A 26-year-old tenant, Isha Muhammad was on Monday sentenced to seven years imprisonment for r.a p.ing his landlord’s eight-year-old granddaughter in Osun State.

In her ruling, Justice Olusegun Agboola found Muhammad guilty of the offence committed on April 19 at about 8pm inside a kitchen.

The convict was first arraigned on August 3 on three counts of r.a.p.e, defilement, and indecent assault.

Prosecution lawyer from the Ministry of Justice, Idayat Abdulrahman presented five witnesses and tendered six exhibits which were admitted in evidence by the court.

The prosecutor earlier told the court that the victim, about 8pm on April 19, was inside the kitchen when Muhammed attacked her, covered her mouth, laid her on the floor and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

The prosecutor tendered a confessional statement of the convict, circumstantial evidence and medical report as part of the exhibits presented.

Abdulrahman further said the victim’s aunt, Araoye Bolanle, 26, on the second day of the incident saw houseflies on the victim, which prompted her to do a thorough checking. She discovered blood and sperm stain on the victim’s private part when she wanted to bathe her.

The victim then narrated how she was r.a.p.e.d by Muhammed to her aunt.

Justice Agboola of the Osun State High Court in Osogbo then sentenced Muhammad for r.a.p.e and indecent assault of a minor.

US finally removes Sudan from ‘state sponsors of terror’ list

The United States has formally removed Sudan’s designation as a “state sponsor of terrorism”, 27 years after putting the country on its blacklist.

The announcement was made by the US embassy in Khartoum and comes into effect on Monday.

“The congressional notification period of 45 days has lapsed and the Secretary of State has signed a notification stating rescission of Sudan’s State Sponsor of Terrorism designation is effective as of today [December 14], to be published in the Federal Register,” the US embassy said on Facebook.

The removal from the list was a top priority for Sudan’s transitional government, which has been in power since August last year following the removal of longtime President Omar al-Bashir in the face of months-long protests against his rule.

The US government added Sudan to its list of “state sponsors of terrorism” in 1993 over allegations that al-Bashir’s government was supporting “terrorist” groups.

The designation made Sudan technically ineligible for debt relief and much-needed financing from major international institutions, in the midst of an economic crisis marked by shortages in wheat and fuel.

Sudan’s acting finance minister said on Monday that the US had committed to providing support for wheat and other commodities over four years as well as for debt relief.

“The US government has committed to providing over $1bn that will support Sudan on its road to debt relief … This is in addition to in-kind support that includes the provision of wheat and other commodities over four years,” acting Finance Minister Heba Ahmed said.

How girlfriend helped detainees escape from police cell

Three detainees have been gunned down, while three others succeeded in escaping from police custody in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The state Police Commissioner, Abdulkadir Jimoh, confirmed the incident on Monday in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo.

Jimoh, however, denied speculations that 19 suspects escaped.

The statement titled, ‘Re: Escape from lawful custody’, said, “On December 13, 2020, around 5am, seven detainees, who were in the custody of one of the command’s outfits for various offences, escaped from the cell. However, three of them died in the process of escaping, while one was re-arrested.

“Meanwhile, efforts are being made to re-arrest other fleeing suspects. By this announcement, the command urges mischief makers to always confirm facts and figures before sending such for public consumption as this can cause panic or unnecessary tension in the state.”

Ugbo had earlier said the girlfriend of one of the suspects procured the saw, which was used to cut the cell’s lock, before they escaped.

It was gathered that as a result of the incident, which occurred on Sunday, the station guard and some other officers were being detained.

Jihadist group Boko Haram on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the abduction of hundreds of school students in Kastina.

“I am Abubakar Shekau and our brothers are behind the kidnapping in Katsina,” said the leader of the group that was also behind the 2014 abduction of hundreds of schoolgirls in Chibok, in a voice message.

Trouble in Davido’s camp as his longtime lawyer and Chioma fight dirty on social media

There seems t be huge trouble in Davido's camp as his longtime lawyer and friend, Bobo Ajudua and his fiancee fight dirty on social media.

Bobo had shared a photo of himself and Davido encouraging his followers to do all to be happy this season. He had written;

''Tis indeed the season. Though it doesn’t feel like it. We’ll do our best despite all things to be jolly. I pray you have a blessed Sunday and week ahead''.

Spotting a photo of Bobo and her man. Chioma fired him saying ''If you no post David your week never start.''

Noticing her comment, Mr Ajudua fired back instantly; “you evil spirit you have surfaced again !”

We wonder how this will play out. These two are Davido's favourites. Davido never jokes with bobo while we also know he doesn't joke with Chioma. Who will now settle this matter?

Prostitute wins six-figure pay out after suing for s.e.xual harassment in New Zealand

A New Zealand s.e.x worker has won a six-figure payout as part of a settlement after filing a s.e.xual harassment complaint against a business owner.

The payment is to 'compensate her for both emotional harm and lost earnings', according to the country's human rights commission.

The case serves as an important reminder that all workers, regardless of the type of work they do, have the right to freedom from sexual harassment in the workplace, said Michael Timmins, director for Human Rights Proceedings.

The identity of the s.e.x worker, who was represented by Timmins' office, and of those involved in the settlement, is confidential.

'We encourage all business owners and employers to ensure that they understand and respect those rights,' said Timmins in a statement.

The s.e.x worker filed the sexual harassment proceedings in the Human Rights Review Tribunal which had earlier ruled in 2014 that prostitutes are protected from sexual harassment under the country's Human Rights Act.

'Context is everything. Even in a brothel language with a sexual dimension can be used inappropriately in suggestive, oppressive, or abusive circumstances,' the tribunal said in its judgement.

'It follows that it is not possible to ask whether a “reasonable sex worker” would find the behaviour unwelcome or offensive.

'If in a brothel language or behaviour of a sexual nature could never be considered unwelcome or offensive sex workers would be denied the protection of the Human Rights Act.'

The settlement announced has been hailed as a milestone for sex workers.

'It's great to see a settlement of this type has been awarded in the context of sex work to a sex worker,' Dame Catherine Healy, national coordinator of the New Zealand Sex Workers, told the BBC.

'It takes courage to stand up in the work, any workplace,' she added, describing the case as a 'wake up call' for businesses.

Electoral college confirms Joe Biden's presidential victory

Members of the US electoral college have affirmed Joe Biden's presidential election victory, one of the final steps required for him to take office.

The Democrat won November's contest with 306 electoral college votes to Republican Donald Trump's 232.

Under the US system, voters actually cast their ballots for "electors", who in turn, formally vote for candidates weeks after the election.

Despite this process, President Trump is not expected to accept the result.

Normally the electors do not get that much attention but this year, due to Mr Trump's persistent efforts to question and overturn the results - involving legal challenges which have been rejected by courts across the country - the state-by-state vote was in the spotlight.
