US reality TV star and makeup mogul Kylie Jenner has been named world’s highest paid celebrity for the year 2020 by Forbes.

Lobatan! Anglican bishop suspended for allegedly having s.e.x with wife of another priest

The Diocesan Bishop of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) of Ekiti West, Rufus Adepoju, has been suspended for alleged involvement in sexual misconduct.

Mr Adepoju, according to a letter dated December 11, 2020 seen by Premium Times, was said to have been caught with the wife of a priest under his employment and care.

The suspension letter was signed by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Most Rev Henry Ndukuba.

The Bishop also reportedly admitted wrongdoing.

“Advent greetings in the precious name of our LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ,” the letter said. “We write with a deep sense of concern and pain to suspend you from office as the Diocesan Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Ekiti West.

“This is sequel to your conduct giving just cause for scandal and abhorrent sexual behaviour with the wife of a priest under your employment and care. These facts were admitted by you in a meeting in our office held on Thursday December 10, 2020.”

Following his suspension, the Bishop would not partake in any church activity for a year, the letter said.

“By this suspension, you are not to partake in any activity of the Diocese as the Diocesan Bishop for a period of one (1) year effective from the date of this letter. Please report and handover to your Archbishop and for further spiritual guidance.”

“It is our prayer that you will use the period to seek the face of God as we join in upholding you in prayers. The supervision of the Diocese of Ekiti is hereby devolved upon us the Primate of All Nigeria. The LORD be with you.”

California distributes 5,000 body bags, 60 refrigerated trailers on standby in response to a surge in coronavirus deaths

California is distributing 5,000 body bags mostly to the hard-hit Los Angeles and San Diego areas and has 60 refrigerated trailers standing by as makeshift morgues in anticipation of a surge of coronavirus deaths.

The precautions come from hospitalizations that now are double the summertime peak and threaten to soon overwhelm the hospital system.

Governor Gavin Newsom said Tuesday that the number of average daily deaths has quadrupled from a month ago. The surge is forcing an urgent scramble for more staff and space, a crush that might not abate for two months despite the arrival of the first doses of vaccines this week.

In Orange County, health officials said they plan to send large tents to four hospitals to help handle their patient caseloads.

Senate scores Buhari low, asks President to wake up

Senators on Tuesday, again, lamented the inability of President Buhari to effectively address insecurity in Nigeria.

They also reminded the President of their powers of impeachment as contained in the nation’s constitution if the situation persists.

The senators also advocated taking serious actions, including putting on hold further actions on the 2021 budget, that could make the President to take resolutions passed by the Senate, seriously.

The lawmakers spoke during a debate on a motion moved by Senator Bello Mandiya from Katsina South Senatorial District on the abduction of about 330 students of a secondary school in the state, which Boko Haram had claimed responsibility for.

The red chamber unanimously resolved not to have anything to do with the nation’s service chiefs any longer; hence they dropped their earlier decision to summon the defence minister, military generals and the heads of the security agencies in the country.

It accordingly resolved to condemn in “very strong terms” the attack on Government Science School, Kankara, in Kastina State which led to the abduction and disappearance of the students.

The Senate also urged Buhari to consider and implement the recommendations of the Senate ad hoc Committee on Nigeria’s security challenges and the Senate resolutions as a holistic response to the mounting security challenges across the country.

The Chairman of the Senate Public Accounts Committee, Mathew Urhoghide, lamented that National Assembly had exhausted all avenues to make Buhari tackle insecurity.

Urhoghide said, “We stood up here to say that the service chiefs should be changed. The more you say, the more annoying it is to the President and he will never change.

“Therefore Mr President please, the President must be compelled to act on Senate resolutions, I am not saying that the President should be impeached; no, it would be premature, but let us compel him to sit up and obey our resolutions.

“The President has no respect for the National Assembly, our resolutions are not being respected.”

Japanese ‘Twitter killer’ sentenced to death

A Japanese man dubbed the “Twitter killer” who pleaded guilty to killing nine people in a high-profile mass murder case in 2017 was sentenced to death on Tuesday, the Tokyo District Court Tachikawa branch confirmed to CNN.

Takahiro Shiraishi, 30, was convicted of murdering, raping, dismembering, and storing the nine victims’ bodies in his apartment in Zama, Kanagawa prefecture, on the outskirts of Tokyo, the court said.

Shiraishi was arrested in October 2017 after police searched his home to investigate the disappearance of a 23-year-old woman who had posted suicidal notes on social media, including Twitter.

Policemen prepare for inspection in front of an apartment in Zama, Kanagawa prefecture, on November 2, 2017, where police found nine dismembered corpses.

Three cooler boxes and five containers were found in Shiraishi’s room, containing human heads and bones with the flesh scraped off, according to TV Asahi, citing police sources.

The nine victims — eight women and one man — were aged between 15 and 26, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK and CNN affiliate TV Asahi, which both cited court proceedings.

The victims had posted online that they wanted to kill themselves, and were subsequently contacted by Shiraishi through social media platforms, NHK and TV Asahi reported.

Using a handle which loosely translates as “hangman,” Shiraishi invited them to his apartment in Zama, promising to help them die, the Jiji news agency reported, citing the indictment.

Shiraishi pleaded guilty to murdering the victims, saying in court that he had killed them to satisfy his sexual desire, NHK and TV Asahi reported.

NHK added that Shiraishi does not intend to appeal the verdict and will be on death row until Japan’s justice minister signs the execution order.

In Japan, the death penalty is executed by hanging, with execution dates not made public until after the penalty is carried out.

Woman dies trying to take photo at edge of 262-foot cliff

A woman in Australia fell off a cliff to her death on Saturday after trying to take a photo at the precarious location.

Rosy Loomba, 38, was with her husband and child when the accident occurred at Grampians National Park, in Australia’s Victoria state, according to CNN affiliate Nine News.

They were at Boroka Lookout, an overhang by the side of the cliff that has a panoramic view of the mountains and town below.

Police said Loomba climbed past safety barriers and warning signs, to pose on a rock for a photo when she tripped over the edge, falling more than 80 meters (about 262 feet) down the cliff face, according to Nine News.

Witnesses heard Loomba screaming, but were unable to help. Police and the state emergency service worked for six hours to scale the cliff and retrieve her body.

The viewing platform was closed throughout the afternoon during the retrieval process, but was reopened to the public by 10 p.m.

The lookout is a particularly popular photo spot; a quick search of the location tag on Instagram shows dozens of photos showing people at the cliffside, legs dangling over the edge, or balanced on a narrow rock near the edge.

A few even filmed themselves doing backflips by the edge.

Local tour guide Graham Wood told Nine News he had warned his customers about the lookout just half an hour before Loomba’s fall.

“I made a comment to my customers, that this (people climbing over the barrier) happens all the time,” he said. “And one of these days, someone’s going to fall off. I’m sad that it’s happened.”

In the aftermath, authorities reminded the public to heed safety signs and guidelines, and that no photo is worth a person’s life.

“We can’t rope off every part of Victoria,” said Police Minister Lisa Neville. “People have to take responsibility.”

Reps suspend Buhari’s 774,000 jobs scheme

Members of the House of Representatives have called for the immediate suspension of the Federal Government’s Special Works Scheme.

Earlier, the National Assembly and the Federal Ministry of Labour, Employment and Productivity had clashed over the recruitment of 774,000 workers for the scheme.

At the plenary, the House asked the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning not to fund the scheme, which is billed to take off in January 2021.

The National Assembly had appropriated N52bn for the exercise in the 2020 Appropriation Act.

It was to begin in November.

Meanwhile, the House faulted the removal of the Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment, Dr Nasiru Argungu, who had backed the parliament in the controversy.

Also, the House urged President Muhammadu Buhari to reverse himself on Argungu’s sacking.

NCC gives telecos two weeks to block SIM cards without NIN

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Tuesday gave telecos in the country two weeks to block subscriber identity module (SIM) cards that are not registered with the National Identity Numbers (NIN) usually issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)

It warned that any telecom operators that failed to comply with the directive risked withdrawal of its licence or heavy penalty.

Last week the Federal Government, through the NCC, ordered the suspension of new SIM registration by operators to allow an auditing of duly registered SIM cards.

But stakeholders in the industry fear that about 25 million subscribers will be affected by the directive while another stampede reminiscent of what happened in 2015 when telcos embarked on mass disconnection of SIM cards is ex-pected. First quarter (Q1) profit of telcos next year too is expected to take terrible hit.

Director of Public Affairs at NCC, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, in a statement, explained: “Following the earlier directive on the suspension of new SIM registration by network operators, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami) convened an urgent meeting of key stakeholders in the Communications industry on Monday, December 14, 2020.”

The meeting had in attendance the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and Management of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the NIMC, as well as the CEOs and management staff of all service providers in the industry, Adinde said.

He said the gathering examined “the need to consolidate the achievements of last year’s SIM registration audit and improve the performance and sanity of the sector was exhaustively discussed”.

According to him, “stakeholders agreed that urgent drastic measures have now become inevitable to improve the integrity and transparency of the SIM registration process”.

He said the meeting resolved that the “following decisions were taken for im-mediate implementation by all network operators: affirmation of the earlier directive to totally suspend registration of new SIMs by all operators; operators to require all their subscribers to provide valid NIN to update SIM registration records; the submission of NIN by subscribers to take place within two weeks (from today December 16, 2020 and end by 30 December, 2020); after the deadline, all SIMs without NINs are to be blocked from the networks’’.

“A Ministerial Task Force comprising the Minister and all the CEOs (among others) as members is to monitor compliance by all networks; violations of this directive will be met by stiff sanctions, including the possibility of withdrawal of operating license; the general public is hereby urged to ensure that their NINs are captured in their SIM registration data.”

The statement noted that all inconveniences which might be occasioned by the directive are deeply regretted.

Former President, Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) Olusola Teniola, said the two weeks’ window was tight considering that there are 205 million active subscribers on the network while NIMC has so far captured 43million people.

He said the 43 million, most of who would be having multi-SIM cards, would be integrated with through NIMC API while those that do not have NIN will be disconnected.

Teniola said there would be panic considering the capacity of NIMC, especially during the yuletide when people would want to get across to loved ones through voice calls and text messages but would not because they must have been disconnected from the system. This, he said, would inevitably lead to shortfall in Q1 profit of the telcos.

But ATCON President Ikechukwu Nnamani is, however, optimistic about the success of the directive.

Trader who claimed SARS pushed him off two-storey building lied – Police witness

Sergent Hamza Haruna, a police officer has said that claims of Mr Ndukawe Ekweke, a petitioner at the Lagos judicial panel are all false.

Mr. Ndukwe Ekweke previously narrated to the panel how he was unlawfully arrested by police officers at his shop in Alaba, brutalized by them, and then thrown off a two-storey building.

Ndukwe said ever since, he has been confined to a wheelchair as he broke his spine and now wears a diaper.

However, after several adjournments to bring a witness by the police counsel, Sergent Hamza Haruna appeared before the panel on Tuesday.

Sergent Hamza in his testimony said that Ndukwe was not pushed off any two-storey building, rather he jumped off to escape from them despite being in handcuffs.

According to Hamza who lead the operation to where Ndukwe allegedly jumped, Ndukwe was arrested after intelligent report he and some other people buggle people’s warehouses and offices to cart away items.

Hamza contrary to Ndukwe’s claims said his statement was collected under caution and he confessed to them he had stolen properties but denied having any form of arm or ammunition.

The Police Sergent said stolen electronics and phone accesories were recovered from his shop. Hamzat narrated that when they tried searching his other shops forcefully, he jumped off the building trying to escape.

According to Sergent Hamza and the police counsel, video evidences are available for the panel to watch and confirm what really happened.

Police lawyer, Cyril Ejiofor, tendered the evidence in a VCD for the panel to watch, however, retired Justice Doris Okuwobi had to adjourn the hearing for the final time.

The retired Justice adjourned hearing because the panel does not have the faciity to play the video evidence tendered in a VCD. She adjourned until Friday, 18 Dec for the evidence to be tendered in a flash drive so the panel can watch and give their rulling on the case.
