Govt announce total closure of Third Mainland Bridge from midnight today

The Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos will be totally shut for 72 hours from midnight Saturday, Federal Controller of Works, Olukayode Popoola said.

The closure is to allow for casting of concrete on the expansion joints.

Popoola said that the shutdown will last till midnight on Tuesday.

Repair work on the bridge began late July and was to end in January.

The deadline has now been shifted till February, because of the #EndSARS protest.

Popoola said construction work had reached the stage for casting concrete on additional three expansion joints.

“There is going to be total closure of Third Mainland Bridge in order to allow for the casting of three number expansion joints on the Island Bound lane

” The effective date of the closure will be from 12:00 midnight of 25th of December. So people will be allowed to use the Third Mainland Bridge to celebrate Christmas.

“By the time the Christmas is winding down which is 12:00 midnight, we are going to close it so that we will be able to cast the concrete on Saturday the 26th and 27th we cast again.

” And we need about 72 hours for this concrete to set. Therefore, the opening will be on the 28th December midnight, that is 72-hour closure.

“This is to prevent vibration of the bridge. If we allow vehicles to be moving on one lane, there is going to be vibrations and the concrete will not set properly,”he said.

The controller said that all the alternative routes were in good condition and traffic regulatory agencies had been deployed to effectively divert and manage traffic to avert gridlock.

He appealed to road users to cooperate with traffic regulatory agencies.

Repairs on the bridge was initially divided into two phases of three months on each carriageway, starting with the Oworonsoki bound carriageway.

The work dragged into four months.

Traffic was partially diverted on a stretch of 3.5km where construction is ongoing between Adeniji Adeniji Ramp and Ebute Meta, while different time belts were allotted for traffic diversions on the bridge.

The 11.8km bridge is the longest of the three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the Mainland.

The bridge starts from Oworonshoki, which is linked to the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and ends at the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island.

Constructed in 1990, the bridge was adjudged as the longest in Africa until 1996 when the Oct. 6 Bridge in Cairo, Egypt was completed.

The Kaduna State Chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, (PFN), Apostle Emmanuel Egoh Bako and his wife, Mrs Cindy Bako, were on Friday evening, 25th December 2020, kidnapped by unknown gunmen at their residence in Albarka Camp, Fadan Kagoma, near Kafanchan in Jema’a local government area.

Apostle Emmanuel Egoh Bako, according to Rev. Hayab, is the Secretary, Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association

Hayab lamented that the Church has had enough of relentless kidnapping of its members and ransoms being paid before getting their freedom.

He described Apostle Bako as a very strong member of Jema’a network, a father to many, a front runner of peace, justice and unity in Southern Kaduna, calling on security agencies to help ensure their release from their abductors.

I was furious when Orlando Owoh abandoned school for music –Late musician’s mother

100-year-old Mrs Morenike Owomoyela is the mother of the late popular musician, Chief Oladipupo Owomoyela, better known as Orlando Owoh. The centenarian speaks to Peter Dada who visited her in her Owo country home, Ondo State. She spoke about her life, family, and youth days, among other things.

How old are you now?

I am over 100 years old.

What date exactly were you born?

I don’t really know the exact date that I was born but I will be over 100 years because my first son (Orlando) was over 70 years when he died 12 years ago.

At what point did you notice that Orlando would be a musician?

He had been exhibiting the traits of an entertainer right from when he was very young. Even people around us did tell me about his talents.  It was later that he got a link with someone in the entertainment line whom he moved about with before he created his own band.

Where were you during the period?

It was here in Owo before we later moved to Lagos and then relocated back to Owo. After a while he (Orlando) moved with his band back to Lagos where he made up his mind to settle.

What was your reaction when he chose music over education?

Initially, I was very furious. I asked him why he would take such a decision because I could not understand why he would abandon school and be singing about.  But later people came to appeal to me to let him pursue his dreams, that he could also make it in life through music. After much thought, I stopped discouraging and I allowed him.

Was Chief  Orlando very stubborn when he was a young child?

Not really; he was not a troublemaker, he did not fight about. When he was young, he moved with those who were much older than him. They liked him a lot and they did take him out.

How did you feel when he later became famous all over the world as a result of his music?

I was always overwhelmed with joy. There was a particular time I went to watch him performing for the first time, I still could not describe the kind of joy I felt inside of me when I saw the crowd that had come to watch him. Up till now, anytime people see me, the same love they have for Orlando is the same they do show to me. Some even go to the extent of giving me money.

Since the demise of Orlando, do his lovers still extend the same gesture to you?

Since the death of Orlando, some of his friends are still taking care of me, particularly, his friend, ‘Die-the-Matter’ ( a former NURTW Chairman in Ondo State, Chief Obayoriade Oladutele), who has never left me for once. He does everything for me. He has never let me lack anything. Even my contribution in the church, ‘Die-the-Matter’ has always been paying it. Also, his friend Apata, the monarch of Ipe-Akoko, has always been doing the same thing. He brings me food and money every time, as well as ‘Ade-the-Tailor’ in Akure, a friend of Orlando.

At over 100 years, you’re still healthy and walking unaided. What is the secret behind this?

It’s God’s grace which I cannot even explain myself. I do everything by myself. I don’t have any ailment associated with old age. I don’t take drugs or herbs. I don’t have any terminal disease. I believe it is God’s grace.

What do you pray to God to grant you?

What I am asking from God is to grant me a peaceful death. I shouldn’t be sick before I die; when it is time, I just want to go inside my room, sleep and go. I wish to die in my sleep. I don’t want to give my children any trouble when the time comes.

The former model, 35, and husband John Legend, 41, revealed in an emotional statement in October that the pair had lost their baby son Jack.

Chrissy admitted that although she and John won't welcome anymore kids, their two bundles of joy are the perfect life companions the pair need.

"I love being pregnant, so so much, and I’m sad I never will be again. But I am lucky to have two amazing little ones who are transforming into big little people more and more every single day. Anyhoo. Love u guys. Xx."

Buhari sacrificing Nigerians for northern interest – Kukah

Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Rev. Matthew Kukah, says the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has sacrificed the dreams of Nigerians on the altar of nepotism by allegedly pursuing Northern hegemony.

The bishop also said Nigeria appeared to be heading for darkness under Buhari’s regime, noting that the government must explain the mystery behind the endless bloodletting in the country occasioned by insecurity.

He described Nigeria as a rudderless country where the citizens travelled in a boat devoid of captain or crew and without any maps and destination in sight.

Kukah said these on Friday in his Christmas message titled, ‘A Nation in Search of Vindication.’

The bishop said, “This government owes the nation an explanation as to where it is headed as we seem to journey into darkness. The spilling of blood must be related to a more sinister plot that is beyond our comprehension. Are we going to remain hogtied by these evil men or are they gradually becoming part of a larger plot to seal the fate of our country?

“President Buhari deliberately sacrificed the dreams of those who voted for him for what seemed like a programme to stratify and institutionalise northern hegemony by reducing others in public life to second-class status. He has pursued this self-defeating and alienating policy at the expense of greater national cohesion.

“Every honest Nigerian knows that there is no way any non-northern Muslim President could have done a fraction of what President Buhari has done by his nepotism and got away with it. There would have been a military coup a long time ago or we would have been at war. The President may have concluded that Christians will do nothing and will live with these actions.”

Kukah maintained that Buhari’s alleged nepotism and commitment to reinforcing the foundations of northern hegemony had dire implications as prominent northerners with a conscience had raised the red flag, pointing out the consequences of his nepotism on national cohesion and trust.

He said against the backdrop of Nigeria’s endless woes, the country had become a nation embroiled in desolation with the prospects of a failed state staring the citizens in the face.

He, however, urged Nigerians not to give up despite the pain, sorrow and uncertainty in the land, enjoining them to pray to God to save the nation.

He added, “Yes, our dreams have been aborted. Yes, our commonwealth has been stolen. Yes, our cancer of corruption has metastasised. Yes, we have been guilty of patricide, fratricide and attempted even suicide. Yes, we are hungry, angry, thirsty and starving.

“Yet, we stand firmly with the unshaken belief that no matter the temptations, the world has known worst times. These may be the worst of times, but for men and women of faith, they could be the best of times. We must stand firm and resolute because, our redeemer liveth (Job 19:25).”

Ed Sheeran raking in millions despite 'retirement' from music

Ed Sheehan is believed to be richer than Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and The Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards after making over £70 million in the last year.

While fans of the 29-year-old were distraught last year to learn Ed was ‘going into early retirement’, it seems the singer was laughing all the way to the bank.

The star is said to have made £70 million thanks to his 2017-2019 Divide Tour as well as earnings from his music – including his collaborative album, No.6 Collaborations Project featuring fellow musicians including Eminem, 50 Cent and Justin Bieber.

Profits were so lucrative, it is reported that Ed made £200,000 per day thanks to fans stumping up cash to see him live and to buy his music.

The Sun claims to have seen documents filed at Companies House revealing Ed made his millions through his touring company and his recording company.

The paper states he banked £48.1 million through his recording company and over £37 million through his Nathan Cable Touring company.

They write: “The figures follow the record-breaking Divide tour, which finished in Ed’s hometown of Ipswich in August 2019.

“That became the highest-grossing music tour ever, grossing £607million over 255 shows.

“Europe generated £58.9million, with £11.4million from Asia and £125,624 from North America.

“His Ed Sheeran Ltd firm, which gets money from the writing, recording and production of his music, made a £29million profit on turnover of £48.1million.”

It is believed his wealth will overtake the reported £260 million that Ringo Starr owns and the £270 million fortune of Keith Richards.

I arrived late for first meeting with Femi Otedola as daughter’s boyfriend — Mr Eazi

Popular Nigerian singer, Mr Eazi, has revealed that he was late to his first meeting with Femi Otedola where he was to introduce himself as his daughter’s boyfriend.

This was made known in a podcast released on Christmas day by the lovers who have been dating for four years.

According to Mr Eazi, Femi Otedola had to comment about his lateness.

He said, “One thing that I can definitely remember was that my hair was pink or purple, and to be honest, at the time, I only had tracksuits and we were going somewhere. So, I remember I got pants and a shirt, and I had these Gucci shoes. I probably never wore them again after that day.

“For me, I actually thought it was a big deal meeting him because it was the first time and we were having dinner at a nice place. That is one of the few times where I have respected dress codes to go to a restaurant. I just wanted it to be smooth and cool. I think I was there a little bit late and your dad mentioned it.”

Speaking about that day, Temi noted that she had to keep her father calm and kept telling him that Mr Eazi was stuck in traffic somewhere close.

“I had to tell my dad that you were around the corner and there was traffic. I was stalling and wondering why you were late. For me, that was a big night.”

In the podcast, Temi noted that her sister, DJ Cuppy, told her that if her relationship does not work with Mr Eazi, she would continue to maintain a working relationship with the singer.
