How I disarmed, caught my abductors, NNPC staff recounts

A staff of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Barrister Tamuno Igbikiberebima, has narrated how he dispossessed two criminals who attempted to kidnap him and handed them over to the police.

Igbikiberebima, who spoke in Port Harcourt, after the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Joseph Mukan, paraded the two suspects and four suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, as part of the Command’s achievement within April and December, noted that the two suspects had attempted to kidnap him.

Igbikiberebima narrated that the two criminals accosted him, and aimed their gun to pick him to an unknown destination, adding that he took control of the situation.

He said: “On 17th December, I was in front of my gate at Rumuigbo, making a phone call when all of a sudden, I saw a black Camry car with two occupants.

“One was driving and the other one came down, opened the back door of the car for me to enter. I asked him who he was and why he wanted me to enter the vehicle.

“He said he does not want to waste me that I should just cooperate and enter the vehicle. I monitored him closely, as soon as he dropped the gun, I stepped aside, held the gun and we started struggling.

“I did not know that it was only one ammunition that was inside the gun. Why we were struggling, the gun was triggered and that attracted attention of my neighbours.

“When people came out they (criminals) jumped into their vehicle and ran away. I ran into my compound, brought out my hilux and gave them a chase to where we caught them.”

However, the criminals, Godspower Saturday and David Simon, said their intention for the attack was not to kidnap their victim, but to dispossess him of some cash he had on him.

Speaking, Saturday said: “We attempted to rob the man of his money, the man rushed us and collected the gun from us. He now returned and handed us over to the police.

“I committed the crime. It is David my friend that informed me that the man has money that we should go and take the money from him.

“This is the second time I am involving in this kind of act. We did not go to kidnap the man, we only wanted to rob him. He told me that the man has money and he does not know here he want to take it to that we should go and collect the money from him.

“We didn’t go to kidnap him. The gun we used for the operations, David said, was one of his friends that gave him the gun. We did not use it to kill.”

China set to overtake US and become world's biggest economy in just eight years

China is due to overtake the US as the world's biggest economy five years earlier than planned – despite the coronavirus pandemic starting there, experts revealed today.

The Centre for Economics and Business Research said Beijing was on track to race past America in 2028 as its growth rate outstrips rival nations.

Publishing the World Economic League Table in its annual Boxing Day update, the think tank said: “The pandemic has not affected all economies equally.

“China, in particular, seems to have weathered the storm better than the western economies and as a result, we now see the Chinese economy overtaking the US in dollar terms in 2028, five years earlier than we had expected a year ago.

“We also see China achieving its objective of becoming an upper-income economy during the new five-year plan period, possibly as early as 2023.”

The London-based CEBR said global gross domestic product plunged by 4.4% this year.

But it believed Covid-19 inoculations would boost the economic recovery.

“In dollar terms, we see world GDP $6trillion lower than we had predicted a year ago,” it said.

“With the vaccines now coming on stream, we expect a strong recovery with 5.3% real growth in 2021.

“In the longer term, we expect world GDP to be $1trillion less in 2034 than we previously forecast, so most of the hit from Covid should be recovered.”

The think tank urged western nations to learn from the resilience of Far East countries showed during the crisis.

“The success of Asian economies in managing the consequences of the pandemic suggest that western economies should become less insular and should pay much more attention to what is going on in the East,” it warned.

“Typically, we compare ourselves with other western economies and miss out on what often is best practice, especially in the rapidly growing economies in Asia.”

CEBR deputy chairman Douglas McWilliams said: “The big news in this forecast is the speed of growth of the Chinese economy.

“We expect it to become an upper-income economy during the current five-year plan period – and we expect it to overtake the US a full five years earlier than we did a year ago.

“Other Asian economies are also shooting up the league table.

“One lesson for western policymakers, who have performed relatively badly during the pandemic, is that they need to pay much more attention to what is happening in Asia rather than simply looking at each other.”

Pasuma reveals why he supported daughter to join US Navy

Popular fuji singer, Wasiu Alabi, aka Pasuma, held the attention of many during the week when he took to Instagram to post a picture of his daughter wearing military fatigues.

He added the caption, “Congratulations to me. My girl, Opeyemi, is now a Navy (personnel) in the United States of America. Congrats my dearest daughter. You always make me and your mum proud. May God guide you in your chosen career.’’

When Sunday Scoop reached out to the beloved singer, he maintained that he was very proud of his daughter achievement. He said, “I am proud of her. Any parent would be proud to know that their child has a mindset of service.

“I supported her decision from the beginning. She had been talking about joining the US Navy for some years, so I was not surprised when she eventually enlisted.”

The singer also stated that even if his daughter indicated interest in joining the Nigerian Army, he would not have discouraged her.

He added, “As a Nigerian, I have the utmost respect for the men and women of the Nigerian military for the selfless work they do. The level of insecurity in the country may initially make any parent feel unsure about their child joining the military.

However, there is the risk of danger in almost everything we do in life. Pilots take risks; driving a car or crossing a road also has risks. Being in the military in America too involves risks, so I would not have discouraged her.”

Speaking on the influence that the late fuji musician, Barrister (whose 10th death anniversary was recently celebrated), had on his career, Pasuma said, “Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister influenced and has continued to influence many fuji musicians, including me. He consolidated the sounds and melodies of ‘were’ music into what we now know as ‘fuji’. The type of influence Barrister had on me and my music was similar to that of a father and son. He will forever be remembered as one of the artistic legends of Africa.”

The self-acclaimed ‘Oganla’ also noted that during festive seasons, which were his busiest periods, he always prioritised his family and would go home to spend time with them after his performances. He also urged his fans new projects from his Pasuma Wonder Organisation and Wasbar Records.

Don’t be depressed by what you see on social media -Bimbo Akintola

Actress, Bimbo Akintola, has advised people not to be depressed because of what they see on social media. According to her, most of the things on social media are fake.

She told Sunday Scoop, “I think that people need to work more on themselves. If you judge your life based on what is happening on social media, there is a huge problem.

It is called social media for a reason. 90 per cent of the things seen on social media are not real. We all have different paths to follow in life.

One should learn to judge oneself by one’s standards and not by other people’s standards. Many people need to sit down and rethink their lives because if social media is your criteria for success, then there is a huge problem.”

Speaking on some of the changes she would like to see in the movie industry, come 2021, Akintola said, “I would like us to have better structures and government participation at all levels. Once there is a structure, everything that is bad can be rectified.”

Reacting to people who had the perception that Nollywood movies were subpar, the actress insisted that the industry had improved. She said, “I cannot make comments on people’s personal opinions.

If anybody feels Nollywood movies don’t have substance, that is their opinion. Somebody else could watch the same movie and say it was suspenseful. However, if you are talking about the technical quality of our works, I believe we have improved.

We are light years ahead of where we were about 20 years ago. If anybody thinks our stories are not good, I would have them know that worldwide, there aren’t that great stories. I think Nigeria is doing well when it comes to the quality of our stories. We have many stories that we have not even started talking about. Once a structure is in place, I believe the sky would be the stepping stone to other creative things.”

Asked to share some of her past Christmas experiences, Akintola said, “My family is close knit and we (my sisters, mum, dad and grandchildren) always spend Christmas together. All my Christmases have being fantastic because I was always with my family members. Since I was a child till now, all my Christmas experiences have been great.

“However, this year has been a dark one because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the killing of innocent protesters. So, for me, Christmas was like a little light at the end of the tunnel, even though there is now a second wave of the pandemic.”

The actress also added that she was looking forward to a 2021 with no coronavirus. “I would be excited if there is no coronavirus in 2021. That is the only thing I can think of. I am so worried about the fact that there is a second wave of the pandemic out there now. Nigerians have just been very lucky because people are not staying safe. Many lives could have been lost but God has been great. However, we also have to play our part by adhering to the safety guidelines laid out by the authorities.”

How Law helped me become better artiste –Falz

Popular rapper, Folari Falana, aka Falz has said that some of the skills he learnt as a lawyer are now helping in his music career.

The graduate of the University of Reading, England, stated this during an Instagram Live session with his fans. He said, “(On the skills helping me as an artiste), I would say analytical mindset because as a lawyer one has to critically analyse things. My lyrics usually have a lot of depth. I do not just make music, I make sure it has a lot of meaning.”

On why he decided to take active part in the #EndSARS protests, Falz said, “It was something that had to be done. I felt that we were left with no choice.

The #EndSARS hashtag is not new. It had been online for years and every time we complained about those things, nothing was done. So, I thought it was time to take to the streets. I had seen a tweet by Runtown saying he was going out (to protest), so I called him and told him I was interested. I put out a tweet saying that we would march on a specific date for a certain cause. We were actually expecting 50 or 100.

We got out there and started marching, and by the time we got to the end of the road, thousands of people had joined. It was unbelievable. I had never seen anything like that. It really gladdens my heart how everyone came out.”

I’ve not given up on love, actress Mercy Aigbe reveals

Actress and movie producer, Mercy Aigbe, says she has not given up on love.

Speaking in an interactive session with her fans on Instagram Live, the Kini Igbeyawo’ producer said, “I have not given up on love and I would never do that. A lot of people ask, ‘Mercy, are you going back to your husband, or remarrying’? The truth is that I don’t even know.

I am more focussed on my businesses, raising my children and acting career. Whatever will come after in terms of marriage and relationship, when I get to that bridge, I would cross it. As a filmmaker, I see myself as a sort of preacher because I believe movies are meant to be entertaining and educative.”

Aigbe also stated that marriage is a partnership between two people who are ready to compromise. She said,“Nowadays, marriages are breaking up everywhere and I don’t know why. I only know why I got separated from my husband.

However, I would not encourage anyone to stay in an abusive marriage. If a spouse has anger issues, such person should seek help. There is nothing impossible. It is just very disheartening that marriages are breaking.

“These are two people from different homes and backgrounds coming together to live under the same roof as one. Even parents and children have issues. A mother and child relationship is usually considered the closest, yet they still have issues. How much more two people with different belief systems. There is bound to be conflict once in a while; it is how the conflict is managed that matters.”

The actress, however, maintained that any form of violence should not be condoned in marriage. She added, “If violence is involved, I say no, run for your life. Don’t stay there. We fail to understand that some forms of verbal abuse even kill faster than violence. A lot of people are depressed. I am tired of marriages breaking up.  Marriage is all about sacrifices. And, sacrifices are not meant to be pleasant, so both parties should be ready to let go, compromise and reach a common ground. They (couple) should not be proud; neither should the man always boast that he is the head. We all know that men are the head but it is also important to note that women are the ‘neck’. As a virtuous woman, it is only the neck that can balance the head. If the head is slanted, it would not stand. Anywhere the neck wants to go is the same direction the head would go. Women are the neck that supports the head, so there should be mutual understanding.”

Covid-19: Couples must obtain clearance to hold weddings - Lagos Government

The Lagos State Government has made it mandatory for prospective couples to obtain clearance from the state government to hold weddings with 300 people in attendance.

This was contained in a notice by the state government on Friday, titled, ‘Stay At Home’.

“Weddings and social gatherings must not exceed 300 people with prior clearance from the Lagos State Safety Commission,” the notice partly read.

The Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, confirmed the development in an interview with The Punch on Saturday morning.

He said the state government is concerned about large gatherings and big weddings as the state experiences a spike in the number of Covid-19 cases.

Mojola told Punch correspondent that the clearance is free and prospective couples will have to go on the Commission’s website to input the details of their weddings, adding that safety marshals will be deployed to such events to enforce all Covid protocols to prevent any possible spread of the virus.

The director-general said, “If it is not a big wedding, maybe 50 people, 100 people, we are not really concerned. But if it is a large gathering with 300 people and above, it is mandatory that you get a clearance. It is a free clearance; no payment whatsoever.

“The process is not difficult, you go online and input the details of the wedding. There might be a requirement to have safety marshals on ground, depending on the size of the wedding.

“The move is to put in place some control measures to prevent super-spreader weddings and hold people accountable. It also helps us in planning. For instance, if we are envisaging 500 guests at a wedding, there will be more attention on them. We will do our regular patrols and visit such places to ensure that they comply with safety protocols.”

“We will also forward those locations to our brothers in LASTMA (Lagos State Traffic Management Authority) and LAMATA (Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority) to be on the lookout that there is a big wedding and many cars will be coming into a neighbourhood so as to aid efficient traffic management,” Mojola said.

Gunners end winless run in Premier League to save Arteta's job

A rejuvenated Arsenal recorded an important victory over Chelsea to end their seven-game run without a win in the Premier League and ease the pressure on boss Mikel Arteta.

Two first-half goals set the platform for the Gunners' first top-flight win since 1 November.

Alexandre Lacazette sent goalkeeper Edouard Mendy the wrong way from the penalty spot and Granit Xhaka curled in a superb free-kick 10 minutes later to put Arteta's side in control.

Bukayo Saka's cross then dropped into the top corner early in the second half to put the game beyond the visitors.

Tammy Abraham scored from close range to make it a nervy final five minutes for the hosts and Jorginho then saw his weak penalty saved by Bernd Leno.

But it was an otherwise lacklustre performance by Frank Lampard's side, who missed the chance to go second.

It was a well-deserved victory for Arsenal, who climb to 14th and will hope any talk of a relegation battle is now behind them.

Russian female politician beats 12-year-old son to death

A Russian politician has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for beating her 12-year-old son to death with a dumbbell during an argument, reports said Thursday.

Authorities said Galina Morozova, 56, bludgeoned her son, Alexander Parakhnyakov, in March because he had defied her and snuck out to go to a sleepover, according to The Sun.

She then reported the boy missing, playing the frantic mother in public pleas on social media and taking part in searches in the city of Astrakhan, the report said.

Her son’s body was found three months later, encased in concrete in the foundation of his older brother’s house, where police said Morozova buried him.

It was her older son, 36-year-old Denis Parakhnyakov, who reported her to the police in June, the report said.

During a police interview, Morozova was “calm and cold blooded” as she confessed to the murder, cops said, adding that she acted alone.

She allegedly told detectives that she’d been furious the boy had disobeyed her and unleashed the brutal attack.

“Morozova confessed to her hostile attitude towards her son,” said Yulia Svitina, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.

The boy “died on the spot,” according to the Russian Investigative Committee.

Morozova is a well-known local politician who tried unsuccessfully last year to become governor of her region.

Her son was remembered as a talented Taekwondo star and junior pianist.

Egypt hospital fire kills seven Covid-19 patients

A fire at a hospital north of Cairo on Saturday killed seven coronavirus patients, security and judicial sources said.

The blaze in the intensive care unit of the hospital in Obour district, on the outskirts of Cairo, also injured five other people, the sources said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, the sources said, adding prosecutors had launched an investigation into the incident.

Firefighters were dispatched to the facility and stopped the blaze from spreading, local media reported.

Egypt has so far registered 130,126 Covid-19 cases, including 7,309 fatalities.

Health facilities in the North African country, like elsewhere, have been strained by the mounting number of infections.

In June, a fire at a hospital in Egypt’s coastal city of Alexandria killed seven coronavirus patients and injured seven others.

Chairman of Netflix-affiliated Chinese gaming company, Lin Qi dies of poison

The chairman of a Netflix-affiliated Chinese gaming company who was poisoned this month has died and a co-worker remains the prime suspect in the shocking case, according to reports.

Yoozoo Group boss Lin Qi -- executive producer of the streaming giant’s adaptation of The Three-Body Problem series of Chinese sci-fi books -- was first hospitalized on December 16.

Chinese media outlets have identified a senior executive at Yoozoo, Xu Yao, as having targeted Lin after an internal dispute within the rising firm.

Now in custody, Xu headed the company’s film and television division and was chosen to oversee all projects related to The Three-Body Problem.

Yoozoo -- which owns the production rights to the books -- initially sought to produce film and gaming adaptations of the series but those projects flailed before the firm successfully partnered with Netflix.

Shanghai police began probing the case after hospital officials alerted them to Qi’s illness and suspected poisoning.

“Following the call, the police began an investigation. According to investigations on site and further interviews, the police found that a suspect surnamed Xu, who is a coworker of the victim Lin, was the most likely the perpetrator,” according to a social media post from the department. “The suspect Xu has been arrested and investigations continue.”

Lin, 39, was allegedly poisoned after drinking a compromised cup of tea, according to reports.

He was working with Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss in developing the highly anticipated project.

Written by acclaimed Chinese author Liu Cixin, The Three-Body series has emerged as a bestselling global phenomenon and won a slew of high profile awards.

Primarily a gaming developer, Yoozoo is also producing a video game based on Game of Thrones.

Shares of the company dropped by as much as 18 percent after Lin’s initial hospitalization.

Trump fumes as MAJOR magazines including VOGUE have continued to ignore First Lady Melania

First lady Melania Trump hasn’t been “in Vogue” or other fashion mags -- nearly enough, President Trump said this week.

Not a single major magazine has featured the former model on its cover during her husband’s presidency, prompting the Commander in Chief to vent on Christmas about the lack of attention.

He shared a tweet from Breitbart News on Christmas Day complaining how “the elitist snobs in the fashion press have kept the most elegant First Lady in American history off the covers of their magazines for 4 consecutive years.”

Melania Trump is “the greatest of all time,” Trump added.

A count by the Daily Mail found by contrast, Michelle Obama, graced at least 12 magazine covers during her time in office — including three for Vogue alone.

“First Lady Melania Trump departed the White House for Palm Beach, Florida on Wednesday in a sleek ensemble with knockout thigh-high leather boots,” gushed Breitbart’s in-house fashion guru John Binder, alongside images of the first couple departing the White House to spend Christmas at Mar-a-Lago.

The website additionally reported she was wearing an Azzedine Alaïa wool coat which retails for a cool $6,610.

Spain confirms first cases of UK Covid strain

Four cases of a coronavirus variant believed to be particularly infectious that recently emerged in Britain have been confirmed in Madrid, the regional government said Saturday, the first cases detected in Spain.

All four cases involved people who recently arrived from the UK, the Madrid regional government’s deputy health chief Antonio Zapatero told a news conference.

“The patients are not seriously ill, we know that this strain is more transmissible, but it does not cause more serious illness,” he said.

“There is no need for alarm,” Zapatero added.

There are another three suspected cases of the coronavirus variant but the results of tests will only be available on Tuesday or Wednesday, Zapatero said.

The new strain of the virus, which experts fear is more contagious, has prompted more than 50 countries including Spain to impose travel restrictions on the UK.

Madrid has since Tuesday banned all entries from the United Kingdom except for Spanish nationals and residents.

Sharing a before and after photo collage of a man who transformed into a woman, Bobrisky wrote, “If she didn’t die during her gender change, trust me I won’t die. God forbid if I did no problem, I’m happy I did what makes me happy. Period !!!!!.

“Have always loved to be a woman from child birth. Now that I have plenty money , let my wish come to pass. Colombia here I come. Doctor Philip is about to give some wet pu***y”
