Notorious bandit, Nasiru Kachalla, others killed in Kaduna

A notorious banditry and kidnap kingpin, terrorising Kaduna-Abuja highway and other parts of Kaduna State, Nasiru Kachalla has been confirmed killed.

Kachalla was killed alongside other bandits during a clash between his gang and a rival group of bandits at the weekend.

Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan who confirmed the development in a statement on Monday said, Kachalla masterminded the Kidnap of four seminarians and killing of one of them in January this year.

According to Aruwan, “Security agencies have confirmed to the Kaduna State Government the killing of a notorious bandit, Nasiru Kachalla.

“Kachalla, who has been on the run for masterminding several criminal acts, including kidnappings, killings, cattle rustling and banditry, was killed in a clash between his gang and a rival group of bandits.

“Human intelligence networks confirmed that criminals from the rival sides were also killed, including some of Kachalla’s lieutenants.

“The clash occurred in a forest around the boundaries of Kajuru-Chikun local government areas of Kaduna Central Senatorial District. A dispute over a large herd of rustled cattle is said to have triggered the fatal confrontation.

“Kachalla and his gang were involved in several crimes, including kidnappings, killings and banditry on the Kaduna-Abuja road and also in the Chikun/Kajuru general areas.

“He was the mastermind of the 9th January 2020 kidnapping of seminarians of Good Shepherd Major Seminary, Kaduna, and the 24th January 2020 kidnapping of Mrs. Bola Ataga and her two children.

“The criminals later killed one of the seminarians, Michael Nnadi and Mrs. Ataga before releasing her children.

“Kachalla’s criminal gang was also responsible for the kidnap of six students and two teachers of Engravers College, in Kakau village of Chikun local government on 3rd October 2019.

“While Kachalla was being pursued, security agents arrested three members of his gang, Tukur Usman, Shehu Bello and Mustapha Mohammed in April 2020 as you can see in the attached picture.

“Kachalla’s image is also attached, clad in a jacket and a winter cap.

“In another development, troops repelled an attempted attack by armed bandits along the Galadimawa-Zaria road in Giwa local government area.

“The bandits blocked the road for some minutes, shooting sporadically at motorists plying the route.

“A combined team of the 4 Battalion and Field Engineers Regiment of the Nigerian army mobilized to the location. The road was cleared and normalcy was restored, with no kidnapping or harm to motorists.

“Troops and police are currently dominating the area with patrols.

“Furthermore, the government was informed of an incident in a forest located in the Western part of Chikun local government, where armed bandits opened fire on some hunters.

“Security agencies are carrying out investigations to ascertain the exact location as well as fatalities if any. Citizens will be briefed on the operational feedback as it emerges.

“In the meantime, Governor Nasir El-Rufai has appealed to Tsohon Gaya, Sabon Gaya and other communities with members missing in the hunting expedition to remain calm,” he said.

Ronaldo insists he won't force his son to follow him into football

Cristiano Ronaldo won't pressure his son to become a footballer - even if the Juventus star does get irritated when he drinks coke and eats crisps.

Cristiano Junior, 10, plays in the Juventus academy but his famous father insists he doesn't necessarily have to follow in his footsteps.

The Juventus and Portugal star, 35, was speaking after being named the Player of the Century at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai on Sunday night.

'We'll see if my son will become a great footballer,' he said.

'Sometimes he drinks coke and eats crisps and it irritates me, he knows that.

'Sometimes I tell my son to take a dip in cold water to recover after a run on the treadmill and he says: 'Dad, it's so cold there'. That's fine, he is only 10 years old.

'I always tell him that it takes work and dedication to have success. I won't pressure him to become a footballer but I would like it.

'The most important thing is to become the best in his field, whether it is football or medicine.'

Covid-19: Osun bans crossover night services

The Osun government on Sunday said there would be no countdown to New Year ceremonies and cross over nights under whatever guise by religious bodies and groups during the New Year eve.

A statement by Mr Wole Oyebamiji, the Secretary to State Government, in Osogbo, said government had directed the security operatives in the state to enforce the directives without exception.

Oyebamiji said that other directives aimed at curbing the spread of the Coronavirus were still in force.

The statement read: ”In addition, the ban on youth carnivals still subsists.

“Also, all social clubs, hotels, departmental stores, supermarkets, event centres and allied centres are to henceforth operate at half of their capacities and observe COVID-19 protocols.

“Wearing of face masks at public places is equally compulsory.

“We want to appeal to all residents and citizens to cut down on social gatherings, including weddings, naming ceremonies and funeral ceremonies so as to reduce the spate of exposure and contact with possible carriers visiting the state during the Yuletide.

“Also all towns and cities are to put on hold the annual days through physical attendance and change such to the virtual version.

“We assure all citizens and residents that Government is insisting on all these measures in their collective interest.

Bill Gates wonders why numbers of cases, deaths are not high in Africa

Bill Gates, a co-founder of Microsoft and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), has said he does not understand why coronavirus numbers have not been as high as predicted in Africa.

Recall that Gates and his wife, Melinda, had in more than one occasion, warned that there will be dead bodies all over the streets of Africa if the world does not act fast enough.

Melinda said her heart was in Africa, adding that she is worried that the continent might not be able to handle the devastating effect of the virus.

But in his end of the year note, Bill said he was happy his prediction about Africa has not happened, “One thing I’m happy to have been wrong about—at least, I hope I was wrong—is my fear that Covid-19 would run rampant in low-income countries. So far, this hasn’t been true,” he wrote.

In most of sub-Saharan Africa, for example, case rates and death rates remain much lower than in the U.S. or Europe and on par with New Zealand, which has received so much attention for its handling of the virus.

“The hardest-hit country on the continent is South Africa—but even there, the case rate is 40 percent lower than in the US, and the death rate is nearly 50 percent lower.

“We don’t have enough data yet to understand why the numbers aren’t as high as I worried they would get — but gave probable reasons Africa was not as affected as expected.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria is currently fighting the second wave of the coronavirus.

The Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 had last week announced a second wave of the dreaded virus.

The Federal Government on Tuesday directed civil servants from grade level 12 and below to stay at home.

They are to remain at home for five weeks following the second wave of the Covid-19 disease in Nigeria.

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, on Friday stated that Covid-19 related deaths now stand at 1,246.

Nigeria currently has a total of 82,747 confirmed cases in the country.

Third Mainland bridge to be opened midnight today

The Federal Controller of Works Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola, said the total shutdown of the Third Mainland Bridge would end at midnight today, 24 hours ahead of schedule.

Popoola told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos that the total shutdown had to be lifted because the contractors were able to fast-track the delicate task they needed to execute.

He said that the initially scheduled 72 hours timeframe was achieved within 48 hours, hence the reopening to traffic 24 hours ahead of schedule.

“We have completed the casting of the three number expansion joints on Third Mainland bridge.

“Therefore, the bridge shall be opened at 12:00 midnight Sunday 27th December. and no longer Monday 28th December.

“That is 48 hours and no more 72 hours,” Popoola said.

The controller had on Tuesday, Dec. 22 announced a 72-hour total shutdown of the bridge with effect from midnight on Saturday to midnight Tuesday.

The shutdown was to stop vibrations caused by movement of vehicles for contractors to cast concrete on additional three expansion joints in the ongoing rehabilitation of the bridge.

NAN reports that the Third Mainland Bridge which was going through series of repairs, had to be partially shut on July 24 for another round of rehabilitation.

The repair that was expected to last six months was extended by one month due to the recent #EndSARS protests in Lagos, thereby extending the completion date from January 2021 to February.

The construction was initially divided into two phases of three months on each carriageway, starting with the Oworonsoki bound carriageway whose completion dragged to four months.

Traffic was partially diverted on a stretch of 3.5km where construction is ongoing between Adeniji Adeniji Ramp and Ebute Meta, while different time belts were allotted for traffic diversions on the bridge.

The 11.8km bridge is the longest of the three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the Mainland.

The bridge starts from Oworonshoki, which is linked to the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and ends at the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island.

Constructed in 1990, the bridge was adjudged as the longest in Africa until 1996 when the Oct. 6 Bridge in Cairo, Egypt was completed.

UK Covid strain: FG moves to return defaulting passengers

In a bid to forestall the importation of the new strain of Covid-19 recorded in the United Kingdom and South Africa, the Federal Government has issued fresh protocol for airlines and passengers coming into Nigeria from the two countries.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority said non-Nigerian passengers who fail to comply with the new protocol would be returned to the UK and South Africa upon arrival in Nigeria.

This was contained in a circular issued on Saturday and signed by the NCAA Director-General, Capt Musa Nuhu.

Nuhu directed all indigenous and foreign airlines operating flights between Nigeria and the two countries to ensure all passengers comply with the fresh directive or face punitive measures.

The circular was titled, ‘Protocol For All Passengers Originating From United Kingdom And South Africa’.

It partly read, “Airlines shall be fined $3,500 (Three Thousand Five dollars) for each defaulting passenger.

“Airlines may be required to return non-Nigerian defaulting passengers to point of embarkation.

“Repeated non-compliance by any Airline will lead to the suspension of the Airline’s Approval/Permit to Fly into the country.”

No fewer than 40 countries including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Mauritius have suspended travel from Britain in a bid to contain a fast-spreading new strain of COVID-19.

Life dealt me a big blow at the peak of my career – Paul Play Dairo

Singer and songwriter, Paul ‘Play’ Dairo, speaks to Mobola Sadiq about how he has fared after his health challenge his new looks and other issues

Read excerpt from the interview below...

You were once one of the reigning stars in the country. What do you miss about those days?

I am not a singer who once reigned. I am still ruling in my genre. My songs are played every day on the radio.

A lot of people are curious to know what you are up to.

I am the Chairman of LYSI Regimen Limited, a mind health and wellness firm. I am also a director of LYSI Mission Foundation.  I was recently appointed as a director of entertainment for the Atiku Care Foundation. I am still very active on the entertainment scene. I also have Playground Entertainment, where we manage and develop artistes for record deals. We also produce content for television and radio.

You now wear dreadlocks. What inspired this new look?

I used to keep my hair in the past but because of my illness in 2009, I had to cut it off. I just wanted to look different.

What message do you want to pass across with your new look?

The message in my new looks is that one has total freedom over one’s life.

Would you say that life dealt you a great blow at the peak of your career?

Yes, I was missing in action for about seven years because of my health challenges but God knows what is best for me.

What were some of the lessons you learnt during your health crisis and afterwards?

One of the lessons is that nothing is promised and freely given. Trust is a hard road to travel. Do not expect love, support or care from anybody but hold on to God. I only got a call from three celebrities and only one (Azadus) came to visit me when I returned (from the hospital). (Meanwhile), I had loads of them (celebrities) as friends. If you listen to my song, Guidance, you would find that there is a lesson for every human being to learn from (it).

What is your advice to young artistes as regards saving for the rainy days?

Although I am not a financial expert, I would advise young artistes to get a financial manager and invest very wisely.

What were some of the mistakes you made in the past that you would want people to learn from?

One of the mistakes I made was trusting too much and being too selfless.

What do you miss most about Nigeria?

The truth is that there is nothing to miss (about Nigeria) apart from the love one gets from one’s fans and friends. This country is in need of a fix.
