Bandits kill lawmaker’s uncle, abduct newly wedded couple, 13 others in Katsina

Bandits on Monday killed a lawmaker’s uncle, abducted a newly wedded couple as well as 13 others in Safana local government area of Katsina State.

It was gathered that the incident took place at Rumka village when the bandits stormed the village and killed Sama’ila Supa, an uncle of a lawmaker representing Safana in the State House of Assembly.

Narrating how his uncle was killed, the lawmaker, Abduljalal Haruna, disclosed that his uncle, Mr Supa, was killed by the gunmen when he refused to be kidnapped.

“One of them just pulled the trigger and hit him. He fell down and died on the spot,” he declared.

Haruna also said that last night at Babban Duhu Community, the bandits abducted 13 people but seven of the abductees later escaped and returned home.

Also, it was gathered that a newly wedded couple were abducted on Monday, just a week after their wedding ceremony.

The groom and his bride were identified as Sama’ila Abdullahi and Zainab Isma’il respectively.

Haruna said many others were shot and they are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

“All these are happening despite the presence of security personnel in the area where my uncle was killed.

“The distance between where the security personnel are staying is about five kilometres to where the gunmen operated.”

When contacted, the police spokesperson for Katsina State police command, SP Gambo Isah, said the police, as well as security personnel, were doing their best to secure the communities from these criminals.

He appealed to residents to always cooperate with the police in order to identify informants, as well as suspicious characters in their communities.

WhatsApp to stop working on millions of phones from January

A new WhatsApp update will prevent the popular messaging app from working on millions of phones from 1 January 2021.

Older Android and iPhone devices will no longer support the latest version of the app, forcing owners to either update their mobile operating system or buy a new smartphone.

Any iPhone not running iOS 9 or newer, or any phone not running at least Android 4.0.3 – also known as Ice Cream Sandwich – will no longer be able to open or operate the Facebook-owned app.

This means all iPhone models up to the iPhone 4 will be unable to support WhatsApp, as these phones are not capable of updating to iOS 9.

The iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S were all released before iOS 9, however owners can still update to the operating system if they are yet to do so.

Android phones that will lose WhatsApp support include the Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Desire and LG Optimus Black.

Phone owners can see what software their device is using by checking the settings section. For iPhone users, this can be found under Settings > General >  Software update.

Most of the 2 billion WhatsApp users around the world will not be hit by the change, though the small fraction that are will likely comprise several million people worldwide.

Phones set to lose WhatsApp support on 1 January 2021:

    Apple iPhone 1-4

    Samsung Galaxy S2

    HTC Desire

    LG Optimus Black

    Motorola Droid Razr

    Any Android released before 2010

Phones that will need to update to at least iOS 9 or Android OS 4.0.3:

    Apple iPhone 4S

    iPhone 5

    iPhone 5S

    iPhone 6

    iPhone 6S

    Samsung Galaxy S3 and newer

    Samsung Galaxy Note

    HTC Sensation

    HTC Thunderbolt

    LG Lucid

    Motorola Droid 4

    Sony Xperia Pro and newer

The messaging giant will also be updating its Terms of Service next year, forcing users to agree to new privacy rules in order to keep using the app.

Ghanaian bouncers forced out Burna Boy after brawl with Davido –Eyewitness

An eyewitness of a fight between Nigerian music superstars, Davido and Burna Boy, at a Ghanaian club on Monday, has said bouncers at the club ejected Burna Boy who stormed the club with six hefty men.

Yesterday, the news went round that there was a fight between Nigerian superstars, Davido and Burna Boy at a club, Twist Club and Lounge, in Ghana. In several videos that have since gone viral, Wizkid was also seen at the club drinking from a bottle seemingly unbothered by the rancour.

In an exclusive interview with The Punch, Steven Mingle, who is responsible for posting most of the videos about the brawl, said he was at Twist Club and Lounge, the venue where the fight occurred.

Mingle had posted clips of the fight on his Instagram handle, Ghhyper1.

He explained, “Davido was having fun with his guys; I was also there beside him taking some shots. The place got choked, so, I had to excuse myself and stayed by the door to get some fresh air.

“When I was standing by the door, I saw Burna Boy and at least six guys following him. One is a popular guy who spends in the club and the others are the muscular guys.

“When Burna Boy entered, he did not come to chill there because he just came to attack Davido. He just went straight to Davido.

“The club’s bouncers had approached them to ask where they were going but when he showed his face as Burna Boy, they allowed him.

“Davido spotted him and his look showed that he was wondering why he (Burna Boy) was coming to his table but he stood his ground. Just like boxing face-off, the next thing blows started flying; the girls and people inside Twist Lounge had to run; I also ran.”

The eyewitness further claimed that the security officers of the club immediately asked Burna Boy to leave the premises.

“The Twist bouncers forced Burna Boy and his guys out of the premises. Even when they were going, Burna Boy hit the club gate. Davido had to wait for about one hour thirty minutes before he moved out because of security reasons.”

Mingle further told The Punch that he has been with Davido and his crew since they landed in Ghana on Sunday to celebrate the song Davido and ace Ghanaian artiste, Stonebwoy, recorded together ― Activate.

When The Punch reached out to Burna Boy’s Public Relations team, it simply said, “Unfortunately we have not gotten any information yet because we are in Lagos and they are in Ghana. We have not spoken to anybody, so, we cannot really give any information on what transpired.”

Teacher, 26, charged with r*pe 'for having s.e.x with a 16-year-old male student

A special-education teacher from Oklahoma has been charged with second-degree rape for allegedly having s.e.x with a 16-year-old student and sending him a n^de selfie.

Andee Lantz, 26, appeared in Caddo County court last Wednesday to answer to the criminal charge against her.

Lantz had been employed as a teacher at Carnegie High School, before resigning in mid-November amid allegations of s.e.xual misconduct.

According to court documents cited by News9, the case began unfolding on November 16, when Carnegie Schools Superintendent Eric Smith contacted the local police, saying that Lantz was involved in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student at the local high school.

Smith said the allegations against Lantz came to light after the student began circulating a n^de photo of the teacher around school.

When questioned about the image, both the boy and Lantz initially 'denied any knowledge of the photo,' but the teacher later allegedly admitted to engaging in an inappropriate relationship with the teen.

'She said on one occasion she was riding around with [the student] and he leaned in [and] kissed her and that "it went from there,"' according to the documents.

Lantz’s first encounter with the teen allegedly took place after a homecoming game.

The 26-year-old special-education teacher also admitted to having s.e.x two or three times with the minor, according to the court papers.

At least one of the trysts was said to have taken place at Lantz's home in Carnegie.

The superintendent noted that the student was not in any of Lantz’s classes.

'It makes me sick to my stomach,' said local parent Susan Clark.

The age of consent in Oklahoma is 16, but that does not apply to relations between a teacher and a student.

US police officer fired after killing unarmed Black man

A white police officer who shot dead a Black man in Columbus, Ohio, last week was fired on Monday, city officials said.

The death of Andre Maurice Hill triggered outrage in a country that has been racked by protests against police brutality and systemic racism since the spring.

The 47-year-old African-American was in the garage of a house when he was shot several times by a police officer who had been called to the scene for a minor incident.

The officer, Adam Coy, was initially suspended after the shooting.

“The evidence provided solid rationale for termination,” said Columbus police chief Thomas Quinlan. “Mr Coy will now have to answer to the state investigators for the death of Andre Hill.”

Hill, who was not armed at the time of the shooting, was the second African-American killed by police in less than three weeks in Columbus.

“Andre Hill’s death is another tragic example of the tendency of police to view Black people as criminal or dangerous, and it points to the need for comprehensive, national police reform,” said Ben Crump, a lawyer who has represented the families of several of the victims of police killings, including that of George Floyd, whose death in May triggered the biggest wave of racial protests in decades.

2m youths ‘jobless’ as govt suspends SIM card registration

About 2 million Nigerian youths have been rendered jobless by the recent suspension of sale, registration and activation of SIM cards by the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, it was learnt yesterday.

Arewa Telecom Operators Agents and SIMCard Dealers Association (ATOASDA) stated this while addressing reporters in Kaduna.

The telecom dealers, who claimed that they were aware of the Federal Government’s intention to address security challenges through linkage of National Identity Number (NIN) with mobile numbers and suspension of new SIM cards registration, expressed worry that rendering 2 million youths jobless might worsen the security challenges.

ATOASDA President Hassan Yakubu explained that as a registered association under the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) members of the agents supported Federal Government’s measures to protect the lives and property of the citizenry.

The union leader urged the government to consider that the causes of insecurity across the country have been linked to youth unemployment.

He said the income of the telecoms business partners, workers and the agents, majority of whom are within 20 to 40 years in the value chain, is determined by the number of activations/SIM registration carried out within the month.

Yakubu said: “The suspension of SIM card registration may trigger a worse form of insecurity, especially in the zones most affected by the insecurity. In fact, the growth in the Telecom sector is determined by the very sub-sector that was suspended and the much celebrated 17 per cent contribution by Telecom sector to the gross domestic product (GDP) was as a result of the activities of the sub-sector under suspension.

“We, therefore, wish to advise that the Federal Government can still achieve the desired result as well as avoid creating more problems in an attempt to solve a problem if the suspension is revised immediately to avoid the danger the suspension may expose the youths to.

“We suggest that all existing SIM Cards must be paired with the NIN numbers within a stipulated time, while an average of three months should be allowed for smooth and effective pairing.

“We also suggest that the SIM Cards sale, registration and activation should be allowed to continue, while an average of 10 new NIN machines be deployed in every local government in the 774 local governments of the federation for a better reach.

“That no new SIM Card should be allowed to be synchronised without the support of NIN number and ID card until the SIM Card and NIN number pairing is concluded,” he said.

Covid-19 second wave: FG, National Assembly consider UK, US flights’ ban next week

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Smart Adeyemi, on Monday said the National Assembly and the Ministry of Aviation were considering banning flights from the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries with high rates of COVID-19.

Adeyemi, who stated this in an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja, said a  decision on the issue would be announced next week.

The Federal Government’s plan may not be unconnected with pressures on it to stop further spread of coronavirus by banning flights from nations with high rates of the virus.

Recall that the President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Prof Innocent Ujah, had in an interview with The PUNCH on Sunday,  said travellers from the UK and the US were worsening COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.

The NMA president stated, “Government knows that they (travellers from the UK and the US) are the ones responsible for increase in cases and the results have shown that and government knows what they should do.”

Although the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 had on Thursday imposed fresh requirements on passengers from the UK and South Africa, flights from the two countries were not banned.

The PTF only opened registers for travellers from the two countries because of deadlier strains of coronavirus discovered there.

It, however,  said there were no new strains of the virus in Nigeria. But there are  fears that travellers who obtained fake COVID-19 results could have brought the new virus  into the country.

According to worldometers.info, as of 6:55pm on Monday, the US had recorded 19,589,952 COVID-19 cases with 341,332 deaths.

The UK had 2,329,730 COVID-19 cases with 71,109 deaths. Sweden had 396,048 cases with 8,279 recorded.

As of Sunday, Nigeria had recorded 84,414 cases of the virus with 1,254 deaths. But deaths from the virus have increased sharply since the second wave started  last month.

South Africa goes back to lockdown, alcohol banned as Covid-19 surges

South Africa will go into lockdown level 3 with immediate effect, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Monday.

He said this would be done to curb the further spread of the coronavirus that is wreaking havoc in the country.

Under adjusted lockdown level 3, all indoor and outdoor gatherings will be immediately prohibited.

Only funerals will be allowed, but they can only be attended by not more than 50 people.

Curfew will be extended from 9pm to 6am, while all beaches will be closed effective from Tuesday.

Ramaphosa said, in an emotional speech in which he implored people to change their behaviour, that excessive alcohol consumption was putting pressure on the health care system due to stabbings, gunshot wounds and accidents.

Trauma units are filling up while the lives of health care workers are being endangered.

“The sale of alcohol will not be permitted. The prohibition on consuming alcohol in public spaces remains. Distribution and transportation will be prohibited,” Ramaphosa said.

He also said, “now it is compulsory for every person to wear a mask in a public place and that anyone not wearing a mask will be committing an offence and could be convicted. On conviction, you will be liable to a fine or imprisonment.

Mob sets 2 ablaze in Ibadan over alleged robbery

A mob on Monday set two persons ablaze over alleged robbery at Molete and Oke-Ado areas of Ibadan.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, SP Olugbenga Fadeyi, confirmed the incident in a statement in Ibadan.

Fadeyi said that the incident occurred in the morning.

He added that one other person was rescued by an Amotekun team and handed over to the police.

He said that an investigation into the matter had begun to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the action.

The police’s spokesman warned the state residents against jungle justice.

“Jungle justice is condemned in strong terms. It has become re-occurring in the state.

“If allowed to continue, it will degenerate into what all and sundry will not be able to curb, and many innocent lives will be terminated unjustly,” Fadeyi said.

The spokesman said that the state police command would not condone taking laws into one’s hands.

Russian dancer gunned down by hooded assassin after ‘row with wife of politician lover’

Russian dancer was shot dead on a Moscow street after having an affair with a man reported to be a politician.

Natalia Pronina, 30, was hunted down by a masked assassin who fired a pistol from close range.

The talented dancer was murdered as she returned home from a choreography session and the attacker reportedly released a stun grenade to distract attention from the shooting.

Police sources believe the shooter may have been a contract killer paid to take her out.

Cops are investigating a theory that she had been in a long term but secret relationship with a wealthy man - believed to be an MP - who trained in martial arts, reports Moskovsky Komsomolets.

They had been dating until this summer but when the MP's wife learned about the affair she allegedly faced threats from the woman, the paper said.

Her boyfriend Alexander Kravchenko, 33, has denied any link to the murder and said he was in Yalta in the Crimea, where he works, at the time.

He claimed she had a stalker and separately that she had a £6,000 debt that she needed to repay.

It was also reported that the assassin, dressed in a hoodie and wearing a mask and glasses, had used a non-lethal self-defence gun redesigned for shooting with real bullets.

Friends have suggested she was killed on the orders of someone whose advances she had rejected.

A friend named Valeria told Komsomolskaya Pravda: “Only one of her admirers could be behind this because of jealousy.”

A former dancing colleague Anzhelika appeared to back the theory a spurned admirer could have been behind the killing.

“Natasha not only danced beautifully, she is a real beauty,” she said.

“Men always clung to her and it is possible that one of the rejected fans could have killed her.

But she added: “She did not have a serious relationship. She was not the type who dreams of a white dress and a bunch of kids.

“Her work was her life. She earned well, she could afford a lot.”

2023: Despite Yahaya Bello distancing himself, his Deputy says he will emerge Nigeria's President

Edward Onoja, the Deputy Governor of Kogi State, says God will help his boss, Governor Yahaya Bello, to become Nigeria’s president in 202, despite the Governor saying his only ambition for now is to serve the people of Kogi during his second term.

The Deputy Governor recalled that Bello emerged the governor of Kogi State in 2015 through the help of God and that the same God will give him the Presidency.

Bello did not contest in the main Kogi governorship election held in November 2015.

But he emerged governor after he was chosen as replacement for Abubakar Audu, the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC in the election who died just as the result of the poll which he won was being declared.

Edward said the emergence of Bello as Governor in 2015 and his reelection is 2019 were all the designs of God Almighty;

“God does not consult anyone before he does whatever he wants, and humans have no right to question God’.

“I am a nobody before God to be able to determine who becomes Governor and who doesn’t, I can’t even give myself power, and let alone giving same to anyone.

“But if God sends you a message, and you refuse to deliver because you are scared of what people would say, you will end up in the belly of the fish like the biblical Jonah.

“I only delivered the message sent through me because I fear God and not man. It was God who made Yahaya Bello the Governor of Kogi State, and it is the same God that will make him president of Nigeria according to His will. So don’t hate me, it is not about Edward Onoja,” he added.

He therefore urged political office seekers to thread softly, noting that God will not consult with any man to determine who will become the next president of Nigeria.

Notorious bandit, Nasiru Kachalla, others killed in Kaduna

A notorious banditry and kidnap kingpin, terrorising Kaduna-Abuja highway and other parts of Kaduna State, Nasiru Kachalla has been confirmed killed.

Kachalla was killed alongside other bandits during a clash between his gang and a rival group of bandits at the weekend.

Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan who confirmed the development in a statement on Monday said, Kachalla masterminded the Kidnap of four seminarians and killing of one of them in January this year.

According to Aruwan, “Security agencies have confirmed to the Kaduna State Government the killing of a notorious bandit, Nasiru Kachalla.

“Kachalla, who has been on the run for masterminding several criminal acts, including kidnappings, killings, cattle rustling and banditry, was killed in a clash between his gang and a rival group of bandits.

“Human intelligence networks confirmed that criminals from the rival sides were also killed, including some of Kachalla’s lieutenants.

“The clash occurred in a forest around the boundaries of Kajuru-Chikun local government areas of Kaduna Central Senatorial District. A dispute over a large herd of rustled cattle is said to have triggered the fatal confrontation.

“Kachalla and his gang were involved in several crimes, including kidnappings, killings and banditry on the Kaduna-Abuja road and also in the Chikun/Kajuru general areas.

“He was the mastermind of the 9th January 2020 kidnapping of seminarians of Good Shepherd Major Seminary, Kaduna, and the 24th January 2020 kidnapping of Mrs. Bola Ataga and her two children.

“The criminals later killed one of the seminarians, Michael Nnadi and Mrs. Ataga before releasing her children.

“Kachalla’s criminal gang was also responsible for the kidnap of six students and two teachers of Engravers College, in Kakau village of Chikun local government on 3rd October 2019.

“While Kachalla was being pursued, security agents arrested three members of his gang, Tukur Usman, Shehu Bello and Mustapha Mohammed in April 2020 as you can see in the attached picture.

“Kachalla’s image is also attached, clad in a jacket and a winter cap.

“In another development, troops repelled an attempted attack by armed bandits along the Galadimawa-Zaria road in Giwa local government area.

“The bandits blocked the road for some minutes, shooting sporadically at motorists plying the route.

“A combined team of the 4 Battalion and Field Engineers Regiment of the Nigerian army mobilized to the location. The road was cleared and normalcy was restored, with no kidnapping or harm to motorists.

“Troops and police are currently dominating the area with patrols.

“Furthermore, the government was informed of an incident in a forest located in the Western part of Chikun local government, where armed bandits opened fire on some hunters.

“Security agencies are carrying out investigations to ascertain the exact location as well as fatalities if any. Citizens will be briefed on the operational feedback as it emerges.

“In the meantime, Governor Nasir El-Rufai has appealed to Tsohon Gaya, Sabon Gaya and other communities with members missing in the hunting expedition to remain calm,” he said.

Ronaldo insists he won't force his son to follow him into football

Cristiano Ronaldo won't pressure his son to become a footballer - even if the Juventus star does get irritated when he drinks coke and eats crisps.

Cristiano Junior, 10, plays in the Juventus academy but his famous father insists he doesn't necessarily have to follow in his footsteps.

The Juventus and Portugal star, 35, was speaking after being named the Player of the Century at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai on Sunday night.

'We'll see if my son will become a great footballer,' he said.

'Sometimes he drinks coke and eats crisps and it irritates me, he knows that.

'Sometimes I tell my son to take a dip in cold water to recover after a run on the treadmill and he says: 'Dad, it's so cold there'. That's fine, he is only 10 years old.

'I always tell him that it takes work and dedication to have success. I won't pressure him to become a footballer but I would like it.

'The most important thing is to become the best in his field, whether it is football or medicine.'
