Monarch accuses Lagos police of torturing son to death

The traditional ruler of Abule-Okuta, Bariga, Lagos State, Wasiu Jinadu, has accused policemen attached to the Bariga Police Division of allegedly torturing his son, Taiwo, to death.

Punch Metro gathered that Taiwo was arrested on Christmas Day after a local footballer, identified only as Toyin, reported to the police that the victim punched him during a misunderstanding.

Jinadu told Punch correspondent that the police, after torturing his son, rushed him to the Somolu General Hospital, where he died.

He said, “On Friday, December 25, 2020, my son and his friends were celebrating Christmas on Alubarika Street in Bariga when one Toyin, who had a misunderstanding with him a week before Christmas, reported to the police that Taiwo punched him in the mouth.

“My son had left his friends to purchase some clothes and was returning when policemen, in an attempt to arrest him, used their vehicle to crush the motorcycle conveying him back to Alubarika Street. Taiwo and the motorcyclist fell inside drainage and the police took him into custody.

“When I was informed by Taiwo’s friends, I was assured that the situation was under control. But surprisingly, Toyin came to my palace around 5am the following day and met Taiwo’s younger brother, Gbolahan.

“He told Gbolahan that the police said Taiwo was sick and that they took him to the Somolu General Hospital for treatment. Gbolahan and Toyin went to the hospital and when they got there, they saw a foamy substance coming out of Taiwo’s mouth.”

While lamenting the impact of the victim’s injuries during the alleged torture, Jinadu said Toyin and his family members fled from the community when the news of his son’s death became public knowledge.

He said, “According to the nurse on duty, the police dropped Taiwo in the hospital and claimed that he fell inside a gutter while drunk. Since Saturday, December 26, 2020, my son was placed on oxygen till he died.

“The police tortured him. The injuries he sustained were severe. At a point, we wanted to do a head test, which cost about N750,000, but while he was still struggling to live in the hospital, we took him to LUTH and LASUTH, where he was rejected due to lack of bed space.

“My son died around 3am on Wednesday after all efforts to revive him proved abortive. His corpse has been deposited in the LASUTH mortuary.”

The victim’s mother, Modinat, said he had a swollen head and bruises at his back.

“I blame Toyin for involving the police; if the police were not involved, my son would still be alive,” she added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the police arrested the deceased.

“But while being conveyed to the station in a police vehicle, he jumped out of the moving vehicle and was rearrested. When they got to the station, they took his statement and in the process, it was discovered that he had taken a lot of drugs and was intoxicated. He even vomited at the counter. So, he was taken to a hospital for treatment and was placed on admission.

“The allegation that he was tortured by the police is not true. He sustained the bruises when he fell from the moving vehicle and he acted that way because he was under the influence of drugs and was not thinking rationally.

“Inasmuch as we feel bad that we lost him, we believe he didn’t commit a capital offence that warranted his death. It was quite unfortunate that we lost him and we sympathise with the family.”

There has been no increase in electricity tariff – Keyamo

Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo on Tuesday denounced purported hike in electricity tariff by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.

Keyamo, who appeared on Channels TV Politics Today, said he is the chairman of the sub-committee consisting of the Federal Government side and Labour side that had been mandated to go round the country to interact and consult with stakeholders and the discos to find an acceptable and cost-reflective tariff that should be paid by Nigerians.

He said the sub-committee was still in the process of carrying out its assignment and had not finished it, saying that there has been no increase in tariff.

According to him what was agreed on was was to freeze certain bands, as there is band A, B, C, D and so on, saying that in the interim, what was done was to adjust certain bands and to ensure that certain persons who were supposed to be on some bands were not wrongly put on some other bands.

He explained that what had just been done was adjustment of certain bands but that there had not been any increase in tariffs.

Keyamo said when he heard it, he immediately called for a meeting on this issue and that what NERC had released did not reflect what was agreed upon at the level of the committee.

He said he was not consulted and that members of the committee also said they were not consulted.

The minister stated that the committee was trying to fix a meeting for Thursday to find out exactly what happened and take it from there.

He assured Nigerians that the committee would soon come out with a statement before Nigerians to show the true position of things.

Paternity scandal: FCMB’s MD goes on leave as investigation begins

Mr Adam Nuru, Managing Director, First City Monument Bank has proceeded on leave as the bank begins investigation into his alleged adultery saga.

Adam Nuru, reportedly fathered the two children of a married woman, working with him at FCMB.

The woman, Moyo Thomas, nee Ojo, confessed her extra-marital affairs to her husband Tunde Thomas, after she escaped to the U.S, where she is now seeking asylum.

The shattered husband, who all along believed that the two kids of the marriage belonged to him, died of depression and heart attack on 16 December, some days before introducing another woman to his family.

A group that has sprung up, Justice for Tunde Thomas, is spearheading the campaign to get Nuru dismissed.

It has also given FCMB two weeks to sack Nuru, on ethical grounds, for being mired in marriage and paternity scandals.

However, FCMB, in a statement on Tuesday said the bank was aware of several stories circulating across several media platforms about Nuru; a former employee, Mrs Moyo Thomas, and her deceased husband, Mr Tunde Thomas.

The statement said while this is a personal matter, the tragedy of the death of Mr Tunde Thomas and the allegations of unethical conduct required the bank’s board to conduct a review of what transpired, any violations of its code of ethics and the adequacy of this code of ethics.

“This is already under way. During the period of the review, the managing director has volunteered to proceed on leave. This will guarantee the sanctity of the review process,” the statement said.

The bank enjoined all its stakeholders to bear with it as it conduct this review and to please respect the various families involved.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West marriage 'effectively over' after his latest decision

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are seemingly accepting that their marriage is 'effectively over' as they have 'no plans' to start living together any time soon.

The 40-year-old Keeping Up With The Kardashians star has continued to live in Los Angeles with their four children while rapper Kanye, 43, stays at his ranch in Wyoming.

The couple have been living "separate lives" for some months now, after Kanye went on a Twitter rant about Kim and her mother, Kris Jenner, in the build up to the US presidential elections.

Since then, Kim and Kanye have had limited time together, despite sharing a 'show of strength' on Instagram with them posing together at the ranch.

That was nearly three months ago and they have barely been together since then and Kanye isn't planning to leave the midwest for LA anytime soon.

A source has told Hollywood Life: “Kanye is taking time and space to work on himself and is spending a lot of his time in Wyoming.

“It sounds like he has no plans to return to LA anytime soon, at least not full-time, but Kim is okay with that.

"He has an amazing support system around him which does help put Kim at ease.”

Kanye is reportedly at his "happiest" when living in Wyoming, with a source saying: "[He’s] in a better place when he’s there and Kim needs to be in LA and wants the kids with her.

"She does her best to keep their lives normal. They communicate daily and he’s in touch often on FaceTime and also the phone with the kids.

"Right now, Kanye is focusing on Kanye while Kim holds down everything in LA and keeps the kids’ lives normal."

The update come less than a month after it was reported that they were "struggling" to keep their marriage together.

S.e.x party: Kaduna Government gives another reason why building was demolished

The Kaduna State government has explained the reason for the demolition of Asher Kings and Queens Restaurant – the building said to be the venue of an aborted s.e.x party in the state.

It revealed that apart from violating Covid-19 protocols, the building located in Sabon Tasha area of Chikun Local Government had no valid title or development permit.

The Director-General of the Kaduna State Urban Development and Planning Authority (KASUPDA), Ismail Umar-Dikko, made the explanation on Tuesday at a press conference in the state.

He stated that the decision to demolish the property on December 31, 2020, was in line with the laws and regulations of the state on any property that was in violation of its provisions.

Umar-Dikko added that the illegal status of the building became a very separate matter from the trigger event, the third-party elements who had planned and advertised an unlawful gathering purportedly at the restaurant.

He stated that by virtue of various land administration and development control initiatives conceived and implemented in the last five years, there was no excuse for anyone in Kaduna State to remain without a valid title to their property and permits for any development thereon.

The KASUPDA boss insisted that those who have chosen to remain in violation and have shunned opportunities to regularise their status cannot argue from sentiment when enforcement actions were taken.

But the owner of the demolished building, Mrs Aisha Yakubu, had denied plans to hold a s.e.x party at the restaurant and threatened to seek legal action over the action of the government.

IPMAN shuts down filling stations in Ibadan following drastic murder of Subawah Petroleum owner

Following the killing of a member of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Mrs. Sherifat Adisa, the association on Tuesday morning shut down all filling stations in Ibarapa region of Oyo State.

Mrs Adisa, who was the Chief Executive Officer of Subawah Petroleum, was killed in Ibarapa by unknown gunmen on Saturday.

The Ibadan depot of the association has also threatened to shut down all filling stations in the state if the government fails to provide security.

The chairman, Ibadan Depot, Alhaji Bukola Mutiu, in a statement issued in Ibarapa, said the closure of all filling stations in Ibarapa was a warning to the Oyo State government to urgently arrest the growing trend of killing and kidnapping of petroleum dealers in the state.

Describing the killing of Mrs Serifat Adisa as one too many, IPMAN warned that except the trend was curbed, all filling stations in the state would be shut down.

Mutiu said: “Killing and kidnapping have become so rampant as a series of cases have been coming up recently.

"On Saturday, one of us, Alhaja Sherifat Adisa, who was the owner of Subawah Petroleum, was kidnapped around 7:30 pm at her office and two people were killed in her station. Her corpse was found around 11:00 pm, close to her station.

“However, the IPMAN has decided to close down all petrol stations in Ibarapa till something is done by the government to protect them and if something is not done, the shutdown of all petrol stations will be extended to Oyo State as a whole.”

Don’t joke with Covid-19, MFM's Olukoya urges Nigerians

General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) Dr. Daniel Olukoya has urged Nigerians to take Covid-19 seriously and obey safety protocols stipulated by government.

The pastor spoke after inaugurating remodeled foyer of the university’s Senate Building yesterday sponsored by him.

Olukoya said many Nigerians still did not believe that the virus was real.  But as a microbiologist, he was sure it existed and should not be joked with.

He advised the government to mount an awareness campaign to persuade Nigerians that the virus is real.

“The first thing is to convince the populace that it is real because some people don’t believe it exists. But I am a man of God and I have prayed for so many people with the same infirmity and I know that it exists.  So, we should not joke with it.  People should obey all the rules.  And most importantly, we should pray that this pandemic will go away,” he said.
