Allegation against Amotekun under probe, Makinde says

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has said his administration is probing the alleged high-handedness of some members of the Western Nigeria Security Network codenamed Operation Amotekun.

In a statement issued on his official Twitter handle, Makinde promised to address the issue, adding that his administration will not sit back and watch security operatives harass members of the public.

The Governor assured the people of the state that their welfare and security remains a top priority to his administration.

He said, “Following the recent events in Tapa, Ibarapa North Local Government Area, it becomes imperative that I once again reassure the good people of Oyo State that our administration is doing everything in its power to address security issues in our state.

“One of the strategies we are using to check insecurity in the state is the recently introduced Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun). I am fully aware of the alleged high-handedness by some members of the corps. We are investigating these issues to address them promptly.

“The welfare and security of the good people of Oyo State remain our top priority. We will not sit back and watch any harassment or intimidation of members of the public or our security officers.

“Therefore, I urge the good people of Oyo State to please remain calm and allow members of the corps to perform their legally authorised duties for our people’s well-being. Let me assure you that if any corps members are abusing their office, they will be dealt with accordingly.”

Covid-19: Postpone NIN registration, Ali Baba urges FG

Comedian Ali Baba, on Friday, urged the Federal Government to postpone the National Identification Number registration exercise in order to curb the spread of coronavirus infection amid the second wave of the pandemic.

According to him, whatever purpose the government wants to achieve with the exercise could be achieved later after the pandemic had subsided.

Ali Baba spoke on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme.

The comedian, who said he recovered from COVID-19 recently, added that no government official paid him to share his Covid battle experience in a video posted on his verified Instagram page.

He stressed that Covid is real but many Nigerians do not believe in its existence in the country because of a trust deficit on the part of the government.

Ali Baba said, “Believability of information from the government is at the lowest ebb right now, especially with the cases of the palliatives that were hidden when people were hungry. Government has not really been in the good books of believability.

“Then to crown it all, in the face of this second wave, you tell people to do National Identification Number registration and people are packing themselves in places. The number of people that are going to catch Covid and become victims of Covid from going to register will be higher than people who go to the beach or people who throw parties.

“So, you can’t, on one hand, say, Covid is real, maintain social distancing and on the other hand, you say, people have to go and queue for the (NIN) registration.

“There are ways we can technologically deal with these things. Information technology has gotten to the point that we really do not need to go to a particular point to register.

“It is not now that there is a pandemic that you should insist on that kind of thing. Let the pandemic be over. Whatever it is can be done later. Whatever purpose you want to achieve can be achieved later.

“It is important that people are considered first. But when you say people should start registering for NIN, it means that you are endangering the people.”

“A lot of people failed me, pray for me”, Footballer John Ogu cries out for help

Nigerian international footballer, Ugochukwu John Ogu has appealed to Nigerians to say a prayer for him as he shared how he was betrayed by people he held close to his heart at the initial stages of his music career.

John Ogu took to his Twitter and disclosed that a lot of people broke his trust after failing him and narrating his ordeal in a series of tweet, he wrote;

I know a lot of people are like What’s up with JOHN OGU? Is he done playing? I know a lot of y’all are like chaii and I love that guy so much. Guy is so passionate for the Super Eagles and so on. Truth is a lot of people I trusted failed me in my career moving forward.

I remembered I trusted someone back here in Nigeria after I signed for Almeria in la liga then but because of their selfish interest for me to play in Belgium, deal crashed but we moved!!

Went to Portugal ,and then I was without a top club then ended up in Israel where I became KING with the help of my brother Tony Nwakaeme on the field where we won titles together.

I’m so proud to see him buzzing hard in Turkey and flourishing. Stayed out without a team for months before a friend helped me to get a deal in Saudi .

Moved there and started a new life then came CORONA!! Na wa but see I always believe this life,Na God get final say for this life . I’m grateful to God for all he has done for me”.

UK fraudster injects 92 year-old woman with fake Covid-19 vaccine

A fraudster claiming to work for the NHS injected a 92-year-old woman with a fake Covid-19 vaccine, City of London Police has said.

Detectives are hunting the man who charged the victim in Surbiton, south-west London, £160.

Police said it was "crucial" he was caught as soon as possible as he "may endanger people's lives".

Det Insp Kevin Ives described it as a "disgusting and totally unacceptable assault".

It comes after the NHS warned people that no-one should be turning up at doorsteps offering a vaccine for payment, following a spate of fake text messages.

Under the current coronavirus vaccine rollout plans, people will be invited to receive the vaccine by their GP or healthcare provider.

Police said the victim allowed the man into her home on the afternoon of 30 December after he said he was from the NHS and there to administer the Covid-19 vaccine.

She said she was jabbed in the arm with a "dart-like implement" before being charged £160, which the man said would be refunded by the NHS.

Police said it was not known what substance, if any, was administered, but the woman had been checked at her local hospital and showed no ill effects.

Det Insp Ives appealed for information to help identify the suspect.

He added: "It is crucial we catch him as soon as possible as not only is he defrauding individuals of money, he may endanger people's lives."

The man made a second visit to the woman's home on 4 January, when he asked for another £100, police said.

Officers released CCTV footage on Friday of a man dressed in a navy blue tracksuit with white stripes down the side, who they want to speak to in connection with the incident.

He is described as a white man in his early 30s, who is about 5ft 9ins (1.75m) tall, of medium build, with light brown hair that is combed back. He speaks with a London accent.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said: "NHS England will never ask for bank details, Pin numbers or passwords, when contacting you about a vaccination.

"Any communication which claims to be from the NHS but asks for payment, or bank details, is fraudulent and can be ignored. It can be reported to police via Action Fraud.

"You will never be charged for the vaccine."

'Broken' nurses forced to choose which Covid-19 patients to save in agonising footage

Disturbing footage shot inside one of the biggest hospitals in London shows the horrific toll on both patients and medical staff during this latest coronavirus spike.

Staff at the capital's University College Hospital say they are being forced to to make the heartbreaking choice of which patients to prioritise as they tackle a surge in young people left fighting for their life.

Patients are dying 'at dramatic speed' as medics in the intensive care unit are forced to choose those with the best chance of survival.

In the last fortnight the number of coronavirus patients being admitted to hospitals in London have doubled.

Dr Alice Carter has compared the current climate to an elastic band that is close to snapping.

"It gets to a point where you stretch so far it never returns back to its baseline," she said.

Coronavirus patients have shared their experience of being admitted to the ward with some saying there is awareness that a lack of ventilators mean people will died.

One patient Attila Karayel, 67, said: "It knocked me out. I didn't think I would make it.

"There is no oxygen around. It's very frightening."

Ashleigh Shillingford, deputy sister at University College Hospital, told the BBC: "We are so stretched we have to prioritise, and prioritising care is not the NHS I grew up in. We shouldn’t have to choose what patient gets what care first.

"People are asking for your help and you don’t know who to help first. The patients are losing their lives at a dramatic speed. We are not just getting older people. This is young people that we are getting, people my age."

The hospital has three times as many critically ill patient as normal.

The increase has forced University College Hospital to convert its operating theatre’s and children’s units into intensive care units to deal with the demand.

Nigerian parliament moves to legalise marijuana

Members of the Nigerian House of Representatives have proposed a bill for the legalisation and usage of non-toxicant cannabis plants for trading, medical and scientific research and cultivation to bolster the country’s non-oil revenues.

Miriam Onuoha, representing Okigwe North Federal Constituency, sponsored the Cannabis Control Bill 2020. The legislation, which has passed second reading, was titled: ‘A Bill for an Act to Regulate the Cultivation, Possession, Availability and Trade of Cannabis for Medical and Research Use and Related Purposes.’

Ms. Onuoha said the bill, amongst many other purposes, would provide regulation for the cultivation, possession, processing, availability and trade of cannabis for medicinal and researching purposes.

The bill also has provisions to punish abusers and violators.

“A person who grows, produces or sells cannabis not for medical purpose and does not present the particulars required for registration under section 12(1) of the proposed bill commits an offence and shall be liable upon conviction to imprisonment for two years or a fine not exceeding #1,000,000 or both,” Ms. Onuoha said.

Other aspects of the bill also said a licensed trader who exceeds limits of prescribed dose to a buyer would risk imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or a fine not less than N500,000 or both.

Debates to legalise marijuana due to its high consumption across Nigeria have flared for several years. In the run up to the 2019 elections, rights campaigner and online news publisher, Omoyele Sowore, suggested that legalising marijuana for local consumption and export could boost the country’s internally-generated revenues and also shore up foreign exchange transactions.

Buhari, Osinbajo, SGF to take Covid-19 vaccine live on television

The Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Faisal Shuaib, has said President Muhammadu Buhari; Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; and other prominent Nigerians will be among the first set to receive the Covid-19 vaccine on live television to help drive awareness.

He said at the weekly press briefing by the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 in Abuja on Thursday, “On Tuesday, I mentioned that we will like to see a situation where Mr President, the Vice President, the SGF, critical leaders come and take the vaccine in full glare of the public to demonstrate that this vaccine is safe.

“So, we have to make provisions for those. But even in developed countries, what we have seen is that apart from the prioritisation of health workers, you have to also identify critical leaders that you don’t want them to be wiped off by the virus.”

Shuaib said experience had shown that vaccines are always better than health immunity.

Paternity scandal: Campaigners for late Thomas close case

Friends of late Tunde Thomas, whose wife Moyo was allegedly impregnated twice by Adam Nuru, the suspended managing director of First City Monument Bank (FCMB) said they have closed the campaign, with objective achieved.

The friends, who came together as Justice for Tunde Thomas, mounted a campaign for signatures in a petition addressed to the Central Bank of Nigeria and FCMB board.

The campaign, which gained traction in the social media, attracted over 2,900 signatures.

On Thursday, the group said it is moving on, having achieved its objective, with FCMB board asking Adam Nuru to step aside as it probes the matter.

“The forced exit of Adam Nuru from FCMB bank and the immediate appointment of another MD is the least and we have achieved that”, said the group, whose arrow head is Akure lawyer, Bolanle Cole.

“What a way to end a career for Adam Nuru and this is just the beginning for him.

“The action by FCMB should bring closure to this case and it will always be a landmark reference”, a spokesman for the group wrote.

Here is the statement by the group:

On behalf of friends , associates , family etc of our beloved Late brother Tunde “Gentle “ Thomas, I wish to sincerely thank each and everyone of you.

With this little pressure supported by all you , we hope to put an end to even the tiniest of injustice and this outcome will surely serve as a deterrent to people in places of influence who think they can do whatever and get away with it.

The forced exit of Adam Nuru from FCMB bank and the immediate appointment of another MD is the least and we have achieved that. What a way to end a career for Adam Nuru and this is just the beginning for him. The action by FCMB should bring closure to this case and it will always be a landmark reference.

I am happy to have championed this with no ulterior motive whatsoever, the only reason I championed was to prove to a Nigerian in diaspora as he was of the opinion that nothing whatsoever will happen to Adam Nuru. In his words “ no be Nigeria , nothing go happen “.

At least, he knows Nigeria can work once we set our mind to it .

May the soul of our friend Tunde Thomas rest in perfect peace . Thank you all.”

EFCC warns Nigerians to desist from selling NIN

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned Nigerians to desist from inducement to sell National Identification Number (NIN) for a fee.

The Commission made this known through its official Twitter handle @officialEFCC on Thursday afternoon.

The Anti-graft agency explained that such action is not only illegal but also risk vicarious liability for any act of criminality linked to their NIN.

It further explained that they risk arrest and prosecution for any act of criminality linked to their NIN.

“As Nigerians struggle to acquire the National Identity Number, NIN, from offices of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, across the country it has come to the knowledge of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC that some unscrupulous persons are cashing in on the exercise to induce enrollees to sell their NIN for a fee.

“The buyers of the numbers are also trading with them to persons whose motives are anything but noble.

“The EFCC wishes to alert Nigerians that it is not only illegal to sell their NIN, they stand the risk of vicarious liability for any act of criminality linked to their NIN.

“In other words, they risk arrest and prosecution for any act of criminality linked to their NIN whether or not they are directly responsible for such crimes.

“The Commission warns members of the public against selling their NIN and to report anyone seeking to buy their NIN, to the nearest office of the EFCC or other law enforcement agencies,” It said.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West 'splashed out $1million each on Christmas presents despite looming divorce'

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West reportedly splashed out $1million (£744,000) each on Christmas presents for one another despite their looming divorce.

TMZ claim the couple went all out in their truly lavish style, with the rapper, 43, buying Kim, 40, five 2021 Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600s, ringing in at $200,000 (£147,000) each, while she bought him several James Turrell pieces.

It has been claimed by multiple sources that their divorce is 'imminent', following a rocky year which saw them pictured in tearful 'crisis talks' after the rapper's series of explosive Twitter posts in the grips of a bipolar episode.

Kanye and Kim, who wed in 2014 and share four children together, daughters North, seven, and Chicago, two, and sons Saint, five, and Psalm, 20 months, are known for their lavish ways, often spending extraordinary amounts of cash.

In a touching gesture, the KUWTK star opted to give her estranged husband some pieces by 77-year-old Turrell, who Kanye has previously lauded.

When the rapper visited Naoshima, the Tadao Ando-designed Japanese “art island”, which features three of Turrell's installations, in 2018, he stated that he wanted to live inside the light-and-space artist’s work.

In a later interview with GQ, Kanye revealed he had been gifted a house design by the artist: '“Turrell designed an entire home and gave it to me on my birthday. I said, ‘We need to live in a Turrell.’”

Kim meanwhile received an alleged five cars from Kanye, with the inexplicable volume of vehicles ringing up to the $1million mark.

At Christmas, Kim was pictured without her $1.3 million engagement ring, two weeks before reports surfaced that her marriage was over.

She was without the diamond as she documented her Christmas celebrations in a slew of Instagram snaps, amid reports she's hired high-profile lawyer Laura Wasser, 52, to begin settlement talks.

Blackout looms in 4 states as PHED workers threaten strike

Rivers and four other states under the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Plc may be plunged into darkness following an industrial dispute that greeted the alleged sacking of 60 workers of the electricity company.

This followed a resolution by the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies Union, which insisted that the retrenchment did not follow due process.

Punch correspondent reports that the other three states are Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

The Assistant General Secretary of the association, Innocent Douglas, while speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt on Thursday, said the sacking affected workers in the four states.

He said, “It is injurious to labour. We don’t accept what is happening. This is mass sacking; sacking of over 60 persons at a time. Mass sacking is against the labour movement.”

Douglas said the association had demanded that the company reverse its decision or face an industrial action.

‘It cost more to look rich than being rich’ – Jude Okoye

Jude Okoye has sent a word of advise to all those living fake life on social media.

According to him, its more expensive to live rich lives when you are not than to live rich lives when you are rich.

It makes life less expensive as you live within your means not an extravagant life which will end up break you down.

The rich men lives within their means and anyone that emulates them ends up been broke as they need to borrow more to maintain the standard.

'' The struggle wasn’t to look successful but to be successful. It cost more to look rich than being rich. Stop looking like it. BE IT','' he wrote
