The Federal Government has made provision in the 2021 budget to pay for the vaccination of around 103 million Nigerians or 50 percent of the population against Covid-19.
Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation Ben Akabueze made this disclosure in Abuja on Tuesday during the budget 2021 budget breakdown.
According to Akabueze: “There is a global alliance to support economically weak nations with vaccines, our understanding of the current plan is that we will be getting vaccines donations to cover up to 20 percent of our population but then the global standards say that to achieve herd immunity you have to vaccine at least 70 percent of the population and so there is a 50 percent of the population that we may be required to pay for their own vaccination”.
Already, there is an “inter-ministerial committee looking at this matters and the assurance is that government will do whatever is needful to keep the citizens and economy safe even if it means coming back with a supplementary budget”.
The National Assembly reviewed the 2021 budget upward by N500 billion to accommodate the purchase and distribution of vaccines against coronavirus.

No fewer than 60 Lagos-Ibadan railway project workers have tested positive for Covid-19, Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has stated.
He told reporters that the development will affect the January 2021 completion date of the project.
According to him, it was important to reschedule the proposed January 2021 inauguration date even though no life has been lost.
“First let us admit that over 60 of our staff, not Ministry of Transportation staff, but the staff working on the rail project, have been infected by the virus.
“Luckily nobody has died and I pray nobody will die, but you see the kind of sacrifice everybody is making to get the rail to function.
“As far as we are concerned, we need to learn how to live with this infection and try as much as possible to keep ourselves protected,” he said.
Speaking on when the inauguration of the project would take place, Amaechi said that the inauguration will hold only when there is a reduction in new cases recorded in the country.
“We were to inaugurate the railway project in the first week of January but had to stop those doing minor completion work because of the rise in coronavirus transmission.
“The timeline for inauguration will depend on when the virus is being curbed,” he added.

Sarah recounted the scary experience on Instagram. She said she and her mother had flown to France to attend her brother's wedding ceremony. All through the flight her mother was a little ill. And 48hours after, she was hospitalised and went into coma.
Doctors told her family to say their last goodbyes.

The mediator of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for Mali, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, as the head of a high-level delegation, arrived in Bamako on Monday afternoon, official sources told PANA.
The two-day visit is a follow-up on the Conference of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on Mali held in the Nigerien capital, Niamey, months ago.
According to the programme of the visit, the delegation will hold talks with the Malian transitional authorities, as well as with politicians and civil society before meeting with the press.
Jonathan will meet with Malian Prime Minister Moctar Ouane.
The ECOWAS mission is also expected to deal with other thorny issues of the life of the nation with the transitional authorities, particularly the holding of the future general elections, institutional and constitutional reforms.

Twitter announced Monday it has suspended “more than 70,000 accounts” linked to the QAnon conspiracy theory following the attack on the US Capitol by a mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters.
The social network began its purge Friday, shortly after it had permanently suspended Trump’s account for language that could incite violence.
“Since Friday, more than 70,000 accounts have been suspended as a result of our efforts, with many instances of a single individual operating numerous accounts,” Twitter said in a blog post.
“These accounts were engaged in sharing harmful QAnon-associated content at scale and were primarily dedicated to the propagation of this conspiracy theory across the service.”

Most major social media platforms have taken unprecedented action since Trump’s supporters invaded the Capitol Wednesday to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s presidential win, shocking the US and tarnishing its international image.
Facebook and Twitter have both indefinitely suspended the accounts for Trump, who has refused to accept the result of the November 3 election and spread baseless theories that the vote was rigged.
Both platforms referred to the risk of future violence, particularly before Biden’s inauguration on January 20. Twitter said it also factored in that plans for more armed protests have been proliferating on and off the service, including a proposed second attack on the US Capitol and state capitol buildings on January 17.

Former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, is stranded in the United Arab Emirate (UAE), after he tested positive for Covid-19, Mr Kanu Agabi, SAN, told a Federal High Court in Abuja.
Agabi, a counsel to Adoke, told Justice Inyang Ekwo in the alleged money laundering trial filed against him and a businessman, Aliyu Abubakar, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Recall that Adoke was granted the permission to travel abroad for medical checkup on Dec. 11, 2020.
The judge, who ordered the release of the ex-AGF’s international passport to him, gave him the permission to travel between Dec. 15 and return on Jan. 10, 2021, a day before the scheduled resumption of trial.
However, at the resumed proceeding, Adoke was not in court.
Agabi told Justice Ekwo that his client tested positive to the virus at the point of his return to Nigeria, and was subsequently held back by the authorities.
The lawyer further told the court that Adoke later tested negative to the coronavirus after his treatment but was unable to get flight to the country as ordered by the court.
“My lord, let me apologise to you that the 1st defendant in this matter, Mohammed Bello Adoke, is not in court today due to circumstances beyond his control.
“I thank this court for granting him permission to travel abroad for medical examination.
“Before Adoke left this country, he tested negative. But unfortunately while in the UAE, he tested positive at his point of his return to Nigeria.
“However, he is now negative after the treatment, but he was unable to get a flight to the country. Happily, he will return tomorrow, January 12, 2021,” he added.
Agabi informed that an application dated Jan. 4 and filed same day, seeking for an extension of time to avail the 1st defendant of the opportunity to take care of himself had already been brought before the court.
He then prayed the court to extend the time within which Adoke would be allowed to appear in court for continuation of his trial.
The senior lawyer, however, assured that the former minister would make himself available for his trial in the next adjourned date.
The 2nd defendant (Aliyu Abubakar)’s counsel, E. C. Ikechi, who held brief for Akin Olujimi, SAN, did not oppose the application.
Also, the prosecution counsel, Bala Sanga, did not oppose the adjournment plea either.
Justice Ekwo adjourned the matter until March 1 to March 4 for continuation of trial, NAN reports.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control says the country is now reaching a critical level, adding that the hospital capacity will no longer be able to cope with more serious Covid-19 cases.
The Director-General of the NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, said this in a series of tweets while reacting to the spike in Covid-19 infections in the last one month.
Ihekweazu said this as the fear of Covid-19 spread at the National Identity Management Commission grew on Monday because Nigerians besieged the NIMC offices following the workers’ suspension of the strike they embarked upon on Thursday.
Recall that Nigerians have been trooping to the NIMC offices since December 14, 2020 when the Federal Government ordered telecommunications firms to disconnect telephone lines of subscribers who failed to link their NIN to their subscriber identification modules.
No fewer than 164 million Nigerians, whose telephone lines could be disconnected on the grounds of not having the NIN, have been thronging NIMC offices, disregarding Covid-19 protocols such as wearing of face masks and social distancing.
The Lagos State Government has raised the alarm over increasing rate at which civil servants test positive for COVID-19.
Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, in a statement said the government was concerned at the increasing rate of COVID-19 positivity among civil servants.
The memo addressed to all Accounting Officers, said they should come up with duty rosters to stem the outbreak of COVID-19 in their respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs.
He said the roster should be prepared with an officer having to report for duty at most twice a month.
The memo reads: “I wish to note with deep concern the spate at which Officers are testing positive to COVID 19 and hereby enjoins all Accounting Officers to come up with Duty Rosters to stem the outbreak in your respective MDAs.
“The roster should be prepared with an Officer having to report for duty at most (one week) twice a month.
“Please note that this directive is without prejudice to existing directives and only reinforces same which are in effect and compliance abysmal. Be Responsible. Be Responsive. Be Safe.”

Dr Khalid Ndaman, the Director of Veterinary in the Kwara Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was, on Monday, found dead in his office in Ilorin.
Meanwhile, there were controversies on the circumstances surrounding the death of the director.
A source said that Ndaman was found dead by some members of staff, another source said that he slumped after reporting to duty on Monday morning and died.
His family members, whom sources said lived close to the ministry, was immediately called to the incident.
A staff member, who preferred anonymity, described the deceased as the most generous director in the ministry.
“He is from Tsaragi in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara and the corpse has been taken there for burial. The ministry had wanted to take the corpse to the hospital for autopsy, but some family members said it was not necessary since he just slumped and died,” the staff member said.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Police Command in Kwara, SP Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the report.
