Bullets sent in mail to Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou

Top Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou has been sent bullets in the mail while under house arrest in Vancouver, according to court testimony.

It was one of several alleged death threats revealed on Wednesday by the company providing her security.

Ms Meng was detained in 2018 on charges relating to allegedly misleading HSBC about Huawei's dealings in Iran.

Her case has created a rift between China and Canada, with Beijing repeatedly calling for her release.

The chief financial officer of Huawei was arrested at Vancouver International Airport on a warrant from the US, where she is facing charges of bank fraud and potentially causing HSBC to break US sanctions.

Days after she was released on bail, she was placed under house arrest in Vancouver. She has been fighting against her extradition to the US, which wants her to stand trial.

The threats were revealed at the British Columbia Supreme Court by Doug Maynard, chief operating officer of security firm Lions Gate Risk Management.

He said Ms Meng received "five or six" threatening letters at her residence in June and July 2020 and that the letters were "easily identifiable by markings on the outside". He added that "sometimes there were bullets inside the envelopes".

The role of the Vancouver police and any investigations is unclear.

Ms Meng has been in court pushing for conditions of her bail to be loosened, including dropping the daytime security detail that constantly follows her.

She is permitted to leave home between 6am and 11pm and pays for a round-the-clock security detail. She also wears a GPS tracking anklet as stipulated by her bail conditions.

Trump ban is 'right' but 'dangerous' - Twitter boss speaks again on President's ban

Twitter boss Jack Dorsey has said banning US President Donald Trump was the right thing to do.

However, he expressed sadness at what he described as the "extraordinary and untenable circumstances" surrounding Mr Trump's permanent suspension.

He also said the ban was in part a failure of Twitter's, which hadn't done enough to foster "healthy conversation" across its platforms.

Twitter has been praised and criticised for freezing Mr Trump's account.

German leader Angela Merkel and Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador - neither an ally of the outgoing US president - spoke out against the tech titan's move.

In a long Twitter thread, Twitter's chief said he did not celebrate or feel pride in the ban - which came after the Capitol riot last week.

He reiterated that removing the president from Twitter was made after "a clear warning" to Mr Trump.

"We made a decision with the best information we had based on threats to physical safety both on and off Twitter," Mr Dorsey said.

He also accepted that the move would have consequences for an open and free internet.

"Having to take these actions fragment the public conversation. They divide us….And sets a precedent I feel is dangerous."

He also addressed criticism that just a handful of tech bosses can make decisions on who does and doesn't have a voice on the internet - and on accusations of censorship.

"A company making a business decision to moderate itself is different from a government removing access, yet can feel much the same," said Mr Dorsey.

The decision to remove users, posts and tweets has been criticised by some for violating First Amendment - free speech - rights.

However Big Tech generally argues that as they are private companies, and not state actors, the law does not apply when they moderate their platforms.

Snapchat joins the trend, bans Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump has been permanently banned from Snapchat, according to a statement by the platform.

"Last week we announced an indefinite suspension of President Trump's Snapchat (SNAP) account, and have been assessing what long term action is in the best interest of our Snapchat community," a Snapchat spokesperson said. "In the interest of public safety, and based on his attempts to spread misinformation, hate speech, and incite violence, which are clear violations of our guidelines, we have made the decision to permanently terminate his account."

Social media platforms have been scrambling to eliminate or limit the reach of inflammatory content and accounts in the wake of the US Capitol riots and ahead of next week's inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, with a special focus on what to do about accounts linked to the President.

Last week, Facebook said it would ban Trump's account from posting for at least the remainder of his term in office and perhaps "indefinitely." Twitter, Trump's preferred online megaphone, initially locked his account for inciting what became a violent insurrection at the US Capitol. He would tweet twice more before Twitter determined it had finally had enough and permanently suspended his account.

YouTube said Tuesday that it is suspending Trump's channel for at least one week, and potentially longer, after his channel earned a strike under the platform's policies.

Nancy Pelosi wears the same black dress she donned for Trump's first impeachment to his second hearing

For the House of Representatives' vote on impeachment, Nancy Pelosi pulled an old favorite out of her closet: the exact same dress she wore for President Trump's first impeachment vote in 2019.

The 80-year-old Speaker of the House was photographed on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday wearing a knee-length black sheath dress with three-quarter sleeves and a mandarin college, which she paired with a gold beaded necklace and a floral mask.

The dress and necklace were both immediately familiar to Americans who had closely watched Trump's impeachment proceedings in December 2019, as Pelosi had dressed nearly identically for the historical occasion.

Twitter users were quick to notice that she wore a somber black dress for the occasion.

'I KNOW this shouldn’t be the focus but Nancy Pelosi in the same dress for both impeachments is the exact kind of trolling our grandmothers taught us and the exact kind of business I am here for,' wrote one.

'It’s her funeral dress,' said another.

But other soon pointed out that she was re-wearing the dress she wore on December 18, 2019 for the first impeachment.

One said: '@SpeakerPelosi wearing her #GoodLuck Dress!

'How embarrassing @SpeakerPelosi didn't have time to get a second impeachment dress,' joked another.

Another called the look 'iconic,' while one more tweeted: 'Pelosi said new impeachment trial same dress!! That’s her little black impeachment dress.'

'You know your presidency is in trouble when the Speaker has an "impeachment outfit" just for the occasion,' said another.

One pointed out that her outfit 'has been worn at half of all impeachments in US history.'

Pelosi even accessorized the same on both occasions, topping the dress' black collar with a gold necklace with colorful beads.

The only difference appears to be that she swapped the Mace of the United States House of Representatives pin — created by jewelry designer Ann Hand, for $125 — with a floral face mask this time around.

Donald Trump impeached for ‘inciting’ US Capitol riot

The US House of Representatives has impeached President Donald Trump for “incitement of insurrection” after a mob of his supporters stormed the United States Capitol last week, marking the first time in US history that a president has been impeached twice.

The House resolution, which passed by a vote of 232-197 on Wednesday afternoon, states that Trump’s actions and remarks ahead of the storming of the Capitol building in Washington, DC incited the rioters.

“We know that the president of the United States incited this insurrection, this armed rebellion against our common country,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during a debate before the vote.

“He must go. He is a clear and present danger to the nation that we all love,” she said.

Ten Republicans joined 222 Democrats in voting to impeach Trump, making the vote a bipartisan rebuke of the president’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The riot at the Capitol on January 6 left five people dead and sent shockwaves across the US and the world, spurring Democratic Party legislators to launch an impeachment push against Trump in his final days in the White House.

The Capitol was stormed after Trump delivered an inflammatory speech to a crowd of his supporters that had gathered to protest Congress’ certification of US President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory.

Apologise now or quietly leave Sokoto — Muslim group warns Bishop Mathew Kukah

A Muslim group based in Sokoto, Muslim Solidarity Forum, has called on the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Mathew Kukah to tender an unreserved apology to the entire Muslim Ummah over his recent “malicious comments” against Islam or quietly and quickly leave the state.

Addressing newsmen on Tuesday, the acting chairman of the Forum, Professor Isa Muhammad Maishanu stated that Kukah’s statements were capable of breaking the age-long peaceful coexistence among the religious faithful in the country.

Professor Isa Muhammad said, “Our intention at Muslim Solidarity Forum is not to hold brief for the President, as he has those who are paid to do that; rather our concern is the image and reputation of Muslims, which Mr Kukah finds pleasure in attacking without an iota of caution, and by referring to him [the president] as a Muslim, that automatically brings all Muslims into the issue.

Daily Trust had reported that Professor Isa Muhammad Maishanu believed Kukah’s statement was seriously provocative.

“His reference to a people who possess ‘a pool of violence to draw from’ no doubt is a reference to those he has always characterized with violence – the Muslims. This is a serious provocation.”

Isa Muhammad Maishanu maintained. “He even has the guts to say the killings we are witnessing in Nigeria are part of a grand religious design! Religious? Who are the victims of the killings?

“What religion do they profess? Is it not a fact that over 90 per cent of those being killed are Muslims?

“Who is behind the so-called design?” he asked.

“These callous statements are unbecoming of someone who parades himself as secretary to the National Peace Committee and a member of Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC).

“As such, we call on Kukah to immediately stop his malicious vituperations against Islam and Muslims and tender unreserved apology to the Muslim Ummah or else quickly and quietly leave the seat of the Caliphate, as he is trying to break the age-long peaceful coexistence between the predominantly Muslim population and their Christian guests.”

The forum added that “The sensible and objective world knows the truth!

“We wonder how Kukah, who lives peacefully and comfortably in the heart of the Sokoto Caliphate, can make such a callous and senseless statement.” Isa Muhammad Maishanu stated.

Bishop Kukah had since denied calling for a coup.

After tragic massacre of farmers, Borno LG recruits 200 volunteers to tackle bandits

Jere Local Government Area of Borno State is recruiting no fewer than 200 youth volunteers to augment the state Civilian Joint Taskforce and the Nigerian security forces’ effort at ending insurgency in the state and the North-East sub-region.

The new Chairman of the council, Umar Gujja, said the volunteers would be deployed to farmlands to provide security to the farming populace of the mostly agrarian community.

Gujja, who disclosed these while reacting to the massacre of farmers in Zabarmari last year, said, “That tragic incident remains the darkest moment for us as a local government.

“That such a large number of our people are slain like rams on their farmlands is a testimony to the security challenge confronting us as a people and as leaders.

“It is therefore the responsibility of us, the elected leaders, to proffer solutions to this security challenge. That is why we are recruiting able bodied youths as volunteers to first of all secure our immediate communities and our farms since we are purely an agrarian local government.”

He said the volunteers would be trained and provided with local arms to help in their operations and added that they would work under the strict supervision of the Nigerian military.

Covid-19: FCT demolishes wrestling arenas, arrests 25

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has pulled down five local wrestling and drama theatres popularly called ‘Gidan Drama’ and ‘Gidan Dembe.’

The demolition exercise which took place at Dakibiyu, Gwarimpa 1 and Sector Centre districts was carried out by the FCT Ministerial Enforcement Taskforce.

It also arraigned 25 persons including motorists and commuters for violating the health protocols.

Speaking after the demolition, the Head, Media, Public Enlightenment and Advocacy of the Taskforce, Ikharo Attah said the removal of the structures became inevitable following the failure of the operators to stop their activities at the arenas.

He added, “Thousands of persons gather at these local entertainment centres to watch artistes and wrestlers perform. In one of the centres, we observed during surveillance that thousands gather to watch nude dancers. Facemasks, physical distancing and sanitizing of the hands do not exist here at all.”

He, however, appealed to Kannywood actors and actresses who sometimes make appearances at the centres to desist from coming there.

On the arrest of violators, Attah said, “Most of the commercial drivers arrested carried too many passengers and overloaded their vehicles in contravention of the Covid-19 Transportation Guidelines and Protocols”.

He disclosed that one of the drivers who identified himself as Garba was sentenced to one-week imprisonment for assaulting a policeman attached to the taskforce and ramming his car into a police van while trying to evade arrest.

Oh No! Youtube suspends Trump channel

Google-owned YouTube on Tuesday temporarily suspended President Donald Trump’s channel and removed a video for violating its policy against inciting violence, joining other social media platforms in banning his accounts after last week’s Capitol riot.

Trump’s access to the social media platforms he has used as a megaphone during his presidency has been largely cut off since a violent mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington DC last week.

Operators say the embittered leader could use his accounts to foment more unrest in the run-up to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.

“In light of concerns about the ongoing potential for violence, we removed new content uploaded to Donald J. Trump’s channel for violating our policies,” YouTube said in a statement.

The channel is now “temporarily prevented from uploading new content for a ‘minimum’ of 7 days,” the statement read.

The video-sharing platform also said it will be “indefinitely disabling comments” on Trump’s channel because of safety concerns.

Developed countries can learn how politics is played from APC - Yahaya Bello

Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, said developed countries can learn how politics is played from Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) after it concluded its membership registration and revalidation.

The Kogi governor made this claim at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja when he was inaugurated as Chairman of Women and Youth Sensitization and Mobilization Committee of the APC.

He said; “We have accepted this responsibility. It is a sacrifice, it is out of patriotism, it is a national assignment. We are going to deliver resoundingly. The APC will continue to win every election in this country.

“By the time we are done and all the registration of new members and revalidation of existing members are done in the country, “APC will not just be the largest in Africa but we are going to call on even the developed nations to come and learn from APC in Nigeria.

“We shall even teach some of our brothers who have just concluded elections that were rancorous. I will not mention names (referring to the United States of America) but we are going to be an institution of politics in Nigeria.

According to the Yobe State governor and Chairman of the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee CECPC, Mai Mala Buni, he said the party is undergoing strategic measures to reposition itself.
