People asked to quarantine after ice cream tests positive for COVID-19 in China

Traces of COVID-19 have been detected in ice cream samples in China with health authorities currently tracing those at risk of infection.

According to a report from local Chinese media, three samples of the locally produced ice cream were found to be contaminated with the virus in the Tianjin municipality in northeast China.

About 4,836 boxes of the ice cream, produced by the Tianjin Daqiaodao Food Company, were said to have been contaminated, of which 2,089 have now been sealed in storage.

However, 935 out of the 2,747 boxes of the ice cream that entered the market were said to be in Tianjin with only 65 sold so far.

Early epidemiological investigations showed that the company used raw materials including milk powder imported from New Zealand and whey powder from Ukraine in producing the batch of ice cream.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Stephen Griffin, a virologist based at the University of Leeds, doused the fears generated by the development, describing it as “a one-off.”

“It’s likely this has come from a person, and without knowing the details, I think this is probably a one-off,” he said.

“Of course, any level of contamination is not acceptable and always a cause for concern, but the chances are that this is the result of an issue with the production plant and potentially down to hygiene at the factory.”

The virologist also explained that the temperature of where the ice cream was stored and its fat content enabled the virus to survive on the tested samples.

“We probably don’t need to panic that every bit of ice cream is suddenly going to be contaminated with coronavirus,” he added.

The development has prompted authorities to place the company’s 1,662 employees under quarantine while they were also subjected to acidic testing as directed by the Tianjin center for disease control.

Tailors sewing fake Amotekun uniforms arrested in Oyo

Some unauthorised tailors said to have been sewing fake uniforms of the Oyo State Security Network Agency otherwise called Amotekun to unscrupulous elements in the state have been arrested.

Making this disclosure on ‘RESH 105.9 FM Political Circuit’ on Saturday was the Chairman of the Amotekun Corps, Gen. Kunle Togun (retd.).

The Amotekun chief said the unscrupulous elements were arrested not far to the radio station at Challenge, Ibadan.

According to him, the suspects were investigated and handed over to the police at Yemetu Police Station.

Togun said, “We heard that these people were sewing and selling the fake Amotekun uniform to some people particularly at Lagelu area of Ibadan. We are presently in the area to uncover the truth.

“Our fear is that if the uniforms get to the wrong hands and they use them to commit crimes, people will believe it is the handiwork of real Amotekun personnel

Tooun, who recalled how he fired an erring Amotekun officer who killed 21-year-old Tosin Thomas in the Mokola area in the state to set a good example, said, “We are really afraid of this development because bad news spread quickly than good news.”

I didn't perform any sacrifice to become king – Goriola Hassan

Actor and filmmaker, Goriola Hassan, was recently installed as the King of Uba land, Imobi Kingdom, Ogun State.

He tells Tofarati Ige about his plans for the kingdom. Excerpt below...

How does it feel being a king?

I have always lived like a king. When one is born into a royal family, one would be taught, right from the onset, on how to live and behave like royalty. One would be advised to stay away from trouble, and to shun alcohol and smoking. One would also be told not to mingle with bad friends.

Those things have been part of me since I was a kid. I have been taught how to behave properly. Right from birth, one’s future would be checked out in a traditional way, so they can know the kind of person one would turn out to be. Because of that, I was not really surprised when ifa (oracle) picked me to become the king.

As a king, would you still be able to act and produce movies?

No, I would not be able to do that. However, I have about nine unreleased movies and I plan to put them out as time goes on.

When some people become kings, they distance themselves from old friends and colleagues. Do you see that happening to you?

I don’t believe in that. I cannot distance myself from childhood friends simply because I am now a king. I still talk to all my friends. However, there are some things I might not be able to do anymore.

What are some of the things you would no longer be able to do as a king?

A lot of people don’t really know me. I have never been an outgoing person that keeps a lot of friends and attends parties. Many people have a different impression of me, perhaps because of the way I dress.  However, there are some clothes I would no longer be able to wear because of my status as a traditional ruler.

It is believed that one would have to spend a lot of money to become a king in Nigeria. Was that your experience?

I did not spend money. My parents, maternal and paternal, were royalty. It was actually after I came back from the United States of America that the people came to me and asked me to become king. I did not have to spend money. Rather, it is the town that is spending money.

Some people also shy away from becoming kings because they feel it involves a lot of fetish practices. Did you have to do that?

There is nothing like making sacrifices if one wants to become a king. Certain rituals would just be performed and I believe that is normal. Nobody is killed to perform such rituals. In Yorubaland, we have culture and tradition, and those are the things we adhere to in the kingship process. We didn’t have to hurt anybody in any way, so I don’t see anything wrong in keeping one’s culture and tradition.

You have tattoos on your body. Didn’t the kingmakers frown at that?

(Laughs). Tattoos have been around for a very long time. Our mothers often had tattoos (lali) on their bodies. They just were not called tattoos at that time. Some people drew lizards, gourds and other items on their bodies. It was done for fashion then, just like it is now. There is nothing new under the sun. Many of the things that are done now were in existence in the days of our forefathers.

Kings usually have many queens. Do you intend to marry more wives?

(Laughs). I don’t like plenty women. I am okay with just one woman in my life. I cannot love two people at the same time. I don’t share my love, so it would be quite difficult for me to have two wives.

Kamala Harris finally receives congratulatory call from Trump’s presidency

Mike Pence, the Vice President of the United States of America has finally called the Vice President-elect Kamala Harris offering assistance.

This development marks the first contact at that level between the Donald Trump administration and the incoming administration.

The Vice President has increasingly taken on the public roles involved in government transition.

Trump, who had in the heat of the crisis pledged to work toward a smooth transfer of power, has yet to contact President-elect Joe Biden or even acknowledged that Biden won the election.

Pence, on the other hand, was at the Capitol for Biden’s certification by the Congress last week when Trump supporters stormed the venue in an attempt to stop the process.

The Vice President’s call to Harris was the latest step by the vice president to uphold some of the political norms that this outgoing administration has destroyed.

“He called to congratulate and offer assistance,” Reuter quoted a source familiar with the situation.

Harris, along with Biden, will be inaugurated on Jan. 20. And while Pence will be at the swearing-in, Trump will not.

Nigerians don’t pray for soldiers, they only wail - Adesina

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has said Nigerians who fail to commit the security situation of the country into the hands of God could be guilty of indirectly prolonging the war against insurgency.

Adesina disclosed this in an article on Thursday titled, ‘The Decent for the Indecent, the Just for the Unjust’.

The presidential spokesman said rather than understand the fact that only God can give victory, some Nigerians had become wailers.

He said, “But victory is from God alone. That is what we must realise as Nigerians. Do we ever pray for our troops in the frontlines? Do we remember those youths, our pride, and strength, faced by death daily, as we sleep in the comfort of our homes, ensconced in the tender bosom of our wives.

“As we pray; God give me money. Give me a car. Give me a promotion. Kill my enemies. Do it now. Do we ever remember our soldiers? Ere you left your room this morning, did you think to pray…did you pray for our soldiers? Victory comes from God alone. If you don’t pray, you may be guilty of prolonging the war in North-East, North-West, North-Central, and all over Nigeria.

“Yes, victory is from God alone. But do some people know? Does it ever enter into their consciousness? They only wail: ‘this insurgency war has lasted too long. The banditry has demystified our military. They are cowards. The top guns don’t even want the battle to end.

“They are making money in billions.’ Okay. Making money in billions and wasting our soldiers, our youths, our future and hope, in their hundreds and thousands because of blood money. That is all some people see; permanent cynics and sceptics, who know nothing of altruism, and whose God is their belly. They think only of pecuniary gain, nothing else.”

No man gave me money to buy my car – Actress Peju Johnson

When it was reported that budding actress, Peju Johnson, had bought a Toyota Venza car, some found it incredulous because she had not been in the movie industry for that long.

However, in an interview with Saturday Beats, the role interpreter stated that aside from acting, she was involved in other businesses and was not concerned about whatever opinions were expressed about the source of the car.

She said, “I bought the car with my hard-earned money. I actually paid for it in early 2020 but because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it could not be shipped to Nigeria until recently.

“People are entitled to their opinions. They are free to say whatever they like. I have found that people who don’t even know one are the ones that usually have the most to say about one. I am used to it and I don’t consider it to be a big deal anymore.

“Many actresses do more than acting. Many of them are influencers on social media and they have other businesses. Whenever they are contracted to represent any brand, they are well paid for it. I am an influencer and I also have other businesses. I sell female items. I don’t know much about male actors but I don’t think many of them do ‘influencer jobs’. I have read many comments on this issue online but I really don’t know why that is so. I only gave my perspective.”

Johnson also noted that she had heard that many actresses joined the industry just to have fame and meet wealthy men in society. She said, “I have heard a lot of that. We (actresses) joined the industry for different reasons. It is true that many ladies join the industry for the reason you stated. As for me, I have passion for acting and that is why I’m in the industry.”

The actress also admitted that some top personalities often got her number and called her for relationships. She said, “I get lots of them. It got to a point that I issued a stern warning to the people close to me about it. I told them not to give anybody my number without my permission”

On whether her light skin had been an advantage to her career, the busty actress said, “I am not sure it has. There are many actresses who are not fair-skinned, yet are doing very well in their careers. There are men who prefer dark-skinned women. I am naturally light complexioned; I did not alter my skin for the sake of any man.”

Asked what her favourite part of her body was, Johnson said, “I love all parts of my body but if I have to choose, I would say my face.”

The actress, who stated that she would be starting work on her first movie production this year in February, also noted that she would love to see a change in the way up-and-coming actors are treated in the industry. She said, “I would like to see a change in the way up-and-coming actors are treated. Many times, they are not paid, and I don’t think that is good enough.”

Policeman beat me up, seized my phone after I asked to sit beside him in a bus —Deacon

59-year-old man, Komolafe David, has alleged that a policeman brutally assaulted him and seized his phone after he asked to sit beside the officer in a bus.

David, who identified himself as a Deacon of The Apostolic Church of Nigeria, narrated his ordeal before the Lagos State Judicial Panel set up to probe police brutality and other related matters, on Friday.

He said, “The last three days in the year 2010, my church, The Apostolic Church of Nigeria, organised a three-day early morning prayer. I already attended the first day, and the 30th was the second day. I was coming to attend the prayer meeting. I joined a coaster bus at Mile 2. Upon entry, the bus was full; the only available space was where this policeman was sitting, and I politely asked him to move.

“I was surprised at the sudden rude and violent response from him. Politely, the second time, I told him the seat was large enough to take the two of us, but he responded violently. The driver decided to stop due to the commotion, while the passengers in the bus tried to stop him and rescue me. This, however, only led to him dragging me down forcibly and he started using his purple belt on me. He equally threatened other passengers that he was going to deal with them, that he had his colleagues at Mile 2.

“He also seized my Nokia C1 phone with MTN line, and was regretting he was not carrying his gun. He said he would have shot me to kill me. He dehumanised me. I realised I could no longer go to the church. I wanted justice for the wrong done to me. I also wanted to get back my seized phone.

“In order to get justice, I realised I needed to get his name and force number for identification, but it was still very dark. For this reason, I followed him and he only continued to beat me up with a long iron rod he picked up from an artisan’s shop around Mosalasi bus-stop, causing serious injury to my arm. I told him to allow us go to a nearby police station to settle the matter and he agreed to this.”

David added that the officer tried to escape by boarding a bus but he followed him, despite death threats issued by the policeman.

When asked by Anthony Eze, his counsel, what he did to seek justice, David said he memorised the name on the officer’s uniform which bore ‘Ededi’ with force number ‘443803’, and he reported at some stations in Lagos, including the state headquarters.

“I finally laid my complaint on the 10th of January, 2011, at the Lagos State Command, and the commissioner assigned the investigation to one Sergeant Bello. Sergeant Bello demanded N30,000 but I could not afford it,” he said.

“Sincerely I’m still coping with emotional trauma. I lost my tooth, I lost one of my ears. The lady I wanted to marry saw me as a mad man the day the incident happened, and she could not marry me again. I want justice against Ededi. I want adequate compensation.”

The case was adjourned till February 3, 2021 to allow an Assistant Commissioner of Police appear before the panel.

A single mother, Imole Sesan, has allegedly set a family of seven on fire in the Idimu area of Lagos State.

The crime was reportedly committed on January 5 while the suspect was arrested on January 8.

It was also learnt that Sesan had promised to punish Joseph.

Why I want people to take Covid-19 more seriously –Actress Zainab Balogun

To say that fans of actress, Zainab Balogun, were shocked when she took to her social media page to disclose that she tested positive for COVID-19 towards the end of 2020, would be an understatement.

The ‘Royal Hibiscus’ told Saturday Beats that she was shocked as well. She said, “I was extremely shocked when I got the results. I was convinced that I didn’t have COVID-19 but decided to take the test in solidarity with a friend who was not feeling well. I assumed the symptoms I had, such as a cough, were related to my seasonal asthma and allergies. The coronavirus was the last thing I thought I had.”

Sharing her isolation experience, ‘The Wedding Party’ actress noted that she spent Christmas and New Year away from her family. “After testing positive for the virus two days before Christmas, I immediately isolated myself from my family.

Thankfully, they all tested negative. It was really a lonely experience without normal interactions. I spent Christmas and New Year away from my family, and that was very hard,” she said.

Balogun also stated that she wanted people to take the virus more seriously, and that was why she shared her experience on social media. She added, “I am familiar with the nonchalant attitude that many people still have about the virus. There are too many talks of it not being real. I want to lend my voice to clarify some of those rumours and encourage people to take the pandemic seriously. I know of at least 15 people who died from COVID-19, and that changes my perspective greatly.

“Unfortunately, people often fail to believe until it hits close to home. COVID-19 is not fake. The number of people dying is not fake. The numbers in the morgue don’t lie. The virus has no preference for rich or poor. It is neither malaria nor a simple cough/cold. We have a responsibility to ourselves and families to be safe and take things seriously. We should not wait for it to get close to home.”

A middle-aged man, Chinasa Ukenna, has demanded for the sum of N30 million as compensation for the death of his elder brother, Cosmos, allegedly in the custody of disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad in Rivers.

He made the demand while testifying at the Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry sitting in Port Harcourt yesterday.

Ukenna said: “On November 10, 2016, I was in Lagos when my younger brother called me that my elder brother was arrested by the Policemen from Okporo Police Station. My younger brother went to bail him so that he can go to the hospital for treatment but they denied him bail.

Trump reportedly ‘refuses to pay lawyer’s fees’ after failed bid to overturn Biden’s victory

US President Donald Trump has reportedly refused to pay the legal fees of Rudy Giuliani, his personal lawyer.

Guiliani was a key figure in Trump’s bid to overturn the election victory of President-elect Joe Biden through the courts.

The lawyer instituted a number of cases across the US but lost them.

According to the Washington Post, Giuliani charged the president $20,000 a day.

But the relationship between Trump and the lawyer started waning after the failed bid to overturn Biden’s victory in the November poll.

“Trump has instructed aides not to pay Giuliani’s legal fees, two officials said, and has demanded that he personally approve any reimbursements for the expenses Giuliani incurred while traveling on the president’s behalf to challenge election results in key states,” the report read.

“They said Trump has privately expressed concern with some of Giuliani’s moves and did not appreciate a demand from Giuliani for $20,000 a day in fees for his work attempting to overturn the election.”

The US president is also said to be frustrated and feeling abandoned in his last days in office, according to some of his aides.

Some members of his staff have quit their jobs in response to Trump’s refusal to concede the election, as well as the recent impeachment of the president by the US house of representatives.

Trump is also reportedly annoyed that members of his inner circle have failed to defend him after he was impeached the second time.

The US president was impeached on Wednesday by members of the house of reps for over his alleged role in the Capitol Hill invasion.

The Capitol building — housing the US lawmakers — was invaded by protesters, shortly after Trump addressed his supporters and asked them to march to the house.

Five people were killed in the incident while many sustained injuries.
