EU call for probe into Uganda election violence as Bobi Wine remains under house arrest

The European Union has joined a growing number of international voices calling for a probe into Ugandan election abuses and violence that left more than 40 people dead in the lead up to the polls.

Opposition candidates were harassed by security forces, the media was suppressed by the government, and observers' offices were raided, said the EU Council of Ministers in a statement on Wednesday.

It called on all parties to refrain from violence and for "election challenges and complaints to be addressed in an independent and transparent manner."

Uganda's longtime leader President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner for a record sixth term, amid an internet blackout and allegations of abuse.

Wine -- a singer-turned-politician, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi -- has been under house arrest after the military surrounded his home on Friday. He maintains the election was rigged.

"I thank all friends in Uganda and abroad who continue to stand with us until we put an end to this indignity," he said in a tweet on Thursday.

The 18-month old niece of Wine's wife, Barbara Itungo Kyagulanyi, is in the residence and her father has been denied access because nobody is allowed to leave or come into the compound, Wine said on Twitter.

Human rights groups spoke out against Wine's detention and the political climate in the country as President Museveni embarked on an election victory tour of the country Thursday.

"It is neither a crime to stand for president nor to want to challenge the election results in court," said the regional director of the human rights NGO, Deprose Muchena, in a statement.

"This continued confinement is politically motivated and a blatant violation of their human rights. It must be lifted immediately and without any conditions."

In the weeks leading up to the election, there were several incidences of violence and human rights violations said Human Rights Watch.

"The abuses included killings by security forces, arrests and beatings of opposition supporters and journalists, disruption of opposition rallies, and a shutdown of the internet," said the international human rights NGO in a statement.

Gigi Hadid finally reveals baby daughter's cute name

Gigi Hadid has finally revealed her daughter's name, four months after she welcomed her in September.

The 25-year-old supermodel, who shares her baby with Zayn Malik, had kept the name private until now, but a change in bio details on Instagram confirms her daughter's name is Khai.

It is a name that has some authority as well - according to name origin websites, Khai means "the chosen one" and "royalty or nobility" and comes from Egyptian descent.

Gigi has celebrated the arrival of her first child with former One Direction star Zayn, but she has not yet shown the baby's face in her numerous appearances on Gigi's Instagram page.

The naming clue came when Gigi updated her Instagram bio to read "khai's mom," apparently letting her more than 62 million followers know her daughter's name.

It came after the model had celebrated four months since her daughter's arrival, posting a black-and-white picture showing her kissing the baby's cheek.

"My girl, 4 months & The best kid", Gigi wrote alongside the snap, adding an angel emoji.

Stony-faced Melania Trump shuns photographers after landing in Florida with Donald

A stony-faced Melania Trump shunned waiting photographers as she touched down in Florida, despite undergoing an outfit change mid-flight.

Footage of the former First Lady turning her nose up at snappers at Palm Beach Airport, while leaving husband Donald in her wake, has gone viral.

The former model, 50, sent tongues wagging after appearing from Air Force One in a colourful £3,700 Gucci dress, having entered the presidential aircraft in a more sombre black outfit.

However, while Melania's former US leader husband posed for photos, she strode on leaving social media commenters declaring she appears to "give no f***s" anymore as she begins life outside the White House.

The Trumps had left the US capital early on Wednesday morning before landing hours later to stay at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, their official home state.

Clips show Donald Trump smiling and waving to waiting photographers, but Melania only spares a frowning glance and fails to stop and pose.

"She has NO f***s anymore! She is DONE with him! Contract is over!" one person wrote on Twitter.

"Nothing says I'm done more than a muumuu," added another.

"She so freaking DONE with this nonsense," said a third.

Sale of govt assets will benefit Nigerians - Finance Minister

The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, on Friday, said the Federal Government’s planned sale of public assets will benefit Nigerians and help to boost the economy.

In an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Mrs Ahmed, who is also the Minister of Budget and National Planning, said some government assets are currently moribund and provide little or no value to Nigerians in their current state.

“There are some government assets that are dead that can be sold to the private sector to be reactivated and put to use for the benefit of Nigerians,” the Minister said.

“So we are looking at different – and I am a member of the National Council on Privatisation – we are looking at different categories of government assets that government has not been able to manage, that are lying down and in some cases even completely rundown, to cede them off to the private sector.

On January 12, Mrs Ahmed had revealed the government’s plan to sell public assets to partly finance the N13.58 trillion 2021 budget.

On Friday, Ms Ahmed stressed that the “intention is not just funding the budget, it is to reactivate these assets and hand it over and have them bring contributions to the growth in the economy.”

She added that the Bureau of Public Enterprises will begin to coordinate with other arms of government on the asset sales in the first quarter of the year.

Gabrielle Union reveals husband Dwyane Wade is not a fan of her racy onscreen s.e.x scenes

Gabrielle Union has revealed that her husband Dwyane Wade is not a fan of her onscreen s.e.x scenes – and often asks for a warning before watching her on TV.

The 48-year-old actress has had a number of raunchy moments in her TV show L.A.'s Finest and she admitted basketball ace Dwyane, 39, doesn't enjoy watching them, but sometimes he sees them without warning because she 'forgets' what she filmed.

Speaking on the Renaissance Man podcast, she said: 'He’ll ask before each episode: "Are you naked in this one?" Sometimes I forget, because we shot this stuff a year ago. And we’ll sit there with the whole family, popcorn, and he’s like …'

Gabrielle – who has daughter Kaavia, two, with her spouse and is stepmother to his children Zaire, 18, Zaya, 13, and Xavier, seven – admitted she also has to think about their offspring when it comes to stripping onscreen.

She said: 'The older boys were like, "I am getting murdered at school," like with the sex scenes and all that.'

However, she insisted she'll continue to expose her skin for as long as she's comfortable, adding: 'Everyone will just adjust.'

But the Bad Boys actress had her own moment of jealousy when her husband had a cameo in What To Expect When You're Expecting, which saw him ballroom dancing.

She said: 'I was like, "What is this, pasodoble?"... I know I couldn’t do it. God bless, he is better than me.'

Nigeria police did very well in 2019/2020 - IGP Adamu

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu says the Nigeria Police did very well in 2019/2020.

His statement is coming despite many security challenges besetting the country.

According to the IGP, when his administration came in, there were many issues related to banditry and kidnappings, especially along the Abuja-Kaduna road, a challenge which he claims his men have quashed.

“Apart from the insurgency that is being successfully dealt with in the northeast, there were issues in the northcentral in terms of farmers-herders conflicts and even kidnappings.

“We restrategized, created an operation, Puff Adder. We retrained our Special Forces, we identified police officers that have been in the theatre of operations in the northeast before they went and came back.

“We retrained them and sent them to the field. So we were able to succeed in bringing down to a very low level of kidnapping and banditry,” the police boss stated.

Speaking on Amotekun and other security outfits, the Police Chief said the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria indicates that there should be only one Police Force.

He said, “any other organisation or any other arrangements that deal with prevention of crimes, passing information, creating of intelligence is just supporting the activities of the Nigeria Police”.

IGP Adamu was of the opinion that every other security outfit set up to work with the police, should not bear arms as to avoid indiscriminate killings.
