10-year-old chokes to death during TikTok Challenge

A 10-year-old girl, Antonella Sicomero, has accidentally choked herself to death in Italy.

According to reports in Italy, the incident happened while she was taking part in a terrifying TikTok challenge.

The Sun UK reports that Antonella was found lifeless on the bathroom floor by her four-year-old sister in Palermo, Sicily.

She told her family she was going for a shower – but investigators are said to believe she was really filming herself for the online craze.

Antonella’s heartbroken dad Angelo said another of Antonella’s sisters told him she had been taking part in a TikTok challenge, La Repubblica reports.

He told the paper: “Antonella was playing the game of asphyxiation.

“My daughter, little Antonella, who dies because of an extreme game on TikTok, how can I accept it?”

Police in Sicily have seized Antonella’s phone and are investigating possible links to social media sites, according to reports.

Like the dangerous Blue Whale challenge, the craze Antonella is feared to have joined is a sick game that has been popular on TikTok over the past year.

Experts have warned of the risks associated with these challenges, including fainting, seizures, brain damage, and even death.

Public prosecutors in Palermo have opened two investigations for “instigation to suicide”.

Antonella’s mobile has been seized by investigators, who are looking into if she was broadcasting live, if she had been invited to play the game by someone else or if she was making the film for a friend.

Prosecutors also want to verify if she was copying videos of other TikTok users taking part in the challenge.

ANSA media agency report she arrived at the hospital in cardiac arrest yesterday.

Doctors fought to save her life but she was later declared brain dead and in an irreversible coma.

Her organs were donated to save three other children before her life support was switched off.

Dad Angelo said: “In this way, Antonella will save many children.”

TikTok said they would be fully cooperating with authorities.

A spokesman said: “Our deepest sympathies are with the girl’s family and friends.

“We do not allow content that encourages, promotes, or glorifies dangerous behaviour that might lead to injury, and our teams work diligently to identify and remove content that violates our policies.

“While we have not currently found evidence of content on our platform that might have encouraged such an incident off-platform, we will continue to monitor closely as part of our continuous commitment to keep our community safe.

“We will also assist the relevant authorities with their investigation as appropriate.”

Trump breaks silence as impeachment trial delayed

Former U.S. President President Donald Trump has spoken 48 hours after he left office, hinting that he’ll be back on the political scene soon.

In a brief interview with the conservative Washington Examiner, Trump said ” ‘We’ll do something, but not just yet’.

It was his first public comment since President Joe Biden was sworn in on Wednesday.

Blocked by Twitter and Facebook, Trump has been limited in speaking his mind, without inhibitions.

And he spoke as U.S. Senate Majority leader, Chuck Schumer announced that Trump’s second impeachment trial will be delayed till 8 February.

This will allow other urgent businesses, such as cabinet nominations, Biden’s Economic Rescue Plan to be dealt with.

The alteration in the impeachment calendar does not however stop Speaker Nancy Pelosi, from submitting the impeachment article as scheduled on Monday.

Trump meanwhile is lying low as he starts his new life as a Florida resident and golf club regular at his Mar a Lago in West Palm Beach.

I can cope with a cheating man — Actress Queeneth Agbor

Actress, Queeneth Agbor, says she can cope with a cheating partner but not a stingy one.

The Microbiology graduate of the University of Calabar told Saturday Beats, “I can cope with a cheating man, provided he ‘cheats responsibly’. He could cheat then make it up to me by spoiling me.

A man who cheats would eventually get tired of doing that, the same way King Solomon in the Bible got tired. History never fails to repeat itself. He would definitely get tired and change but a stingy man would remain like that for life. Stinginess is not permitted around me.”

Speaking on some of the habits she would love to drop in 2021, Agbor said she would quit making decisions in the heat of the moment.

“One habit I would love to drop in 2021 is making decisions in the heat of the moment. I would definitely put a stop to that and invest a lot of care into making decisions.”

Dangote maintains 1st position in Africa billionaires’ list

Aliko Dangote of Nigeria has maintained his position as Africa’s richest person for 10 consecutive years, according to the 2021 Forbes’ Africa Billionaires List released on Friday.

Also, the Chairman of telecommunications giant Globacom Mike Adenuga has been placed fifth position, while Abdulsamad Rabiu of BUA Group ranked sixth richest person in Africa.

Nigeria had three persons on the list while South Africa and Egypt each had five billionaires, followed by Morocco with two.

Forbes stated that the continent’s 18 billionaires were worth an average $4.1bn, 12 per cent more than a year ago, driven in part by Nigeria’s surging stock market.

“For the tenth year in a row, Aliko Dangote of Nigeria is the continent’s richest person, worth $12.1bn, up by $2bn from last year’s list, thanks to a roughly 30 per cent rise in the share price of Dangote Cement, by far his most valuable asset,” Forbes stated in its report.

The list named the second richest person in Africa as Nassef Sawiris of Egypt, whose largest asset was a nearly six per cent stake in sportswear maker Adidas.

At number three was Nicky Oppenheimer of South Africa, who inherited a stake in diamond firm DeBeers and ran the company until 2012, when he sold his family’s 40 per cent stake in DeBeers to mining giant AngloAmerican for $5.1bn.

It said the biggest gainer this year was Rabiu.

“Remarkably, shares of his BUA Cement Plc, which listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange in January 2020, have doubled in value in the past year,” the report stated.

That pushed Rabiu’s fortune up by an extraordinary 77 per cent, to $5.5bn, adding that Rabiu and his son together own about 97 per cent of the company, giving the company a tiny public float.

It stated Nigerian Stock Exchange required that either 20 per cent or more of a company’s shares should be floated to the public, or that the floated shares were worth at least N20bn, about $50m, describing it as a paltry sum, to be sure.

“A spokesman for the Nigerian Stock Exchange told Forbes that BUA Cement meets the second requirement,” the report stated.

It added that while some got richer by the billions, two from the 2020 list of Africa’s richest dropped below the $1bn mark.

In fact, the only two women billionaires from Africa had both fallen off the list.

Forbes calculated that the fortune of Folorunsho Alakija of Nigeria, who owns an oil exploration company, dropped below $1bn due to lower oil prices.

It said Isabel dos Santos, who since 2013 had been the richest woman in Africa, was knocked from her perch by a series of court decisions freezing her assets in both Angola and Portugal.

Altogether they were worth $73.8bn, slightly more than the $73.4bn aggregate worth of the 20 billionaires on last year’s list of Africa’s richest people.

Conor McGregor set to fight again after third retirement

UFC champion, Conor McGregor is set to return to the Octagon after a third retirement to fight Dustin Poirier.

The fight which is to hold on Sunday in Abu Dhabi Fight Island is a rematch from 2014 where McGregor took less than two minutes to knock out the American.

Having spent over a year away from the UFC since his last fight, McGregor called his time a “wild ride.”

“It’s been some ride — I’ve got it done and I’m up here,” McGregor said during his pre-fight press conference.

“Mad as a brush. I’ve been through it all. It’s been a wild ride for me. It’s not been easy at times. What a life and I tell you, I wouldn’t want it to be any other way. I’m very excited to be back here. I’m very excited to have fans in here. I feel invigorated. I’m going to paint a beautiful picture inside this Octagon on Saturday night and I’m very excited to do so.

However, Poirier said he learned a lot from that defeat and six years later, he’s a very different fighter.

“I’m more prepared now on the mental side,” Poirier said. “Before, when I was younger, I didn’t put a whole lot into the mental side of fighting. I listened to critics. I listened to the opinions of people. I listened to Conor.

“I got frustrated and caught up in all the war of words leading up to the fight. And he’s one of the best at that, getting under your skin, making you upset. Now, that’s just noise to me.”

Man arrested for killing his girlfriend and their 9-month old daughter in South Africa

Police made a breakthrough in the murders of a 20-year-old mother and nine-month-old infant at a lodge in Limpopo , South Africa when a suspect was arrested in Gauteng on Thursday.

The decomposing bodies of Chantelle Ash and her daughter Tasneem were discovered  by a receptionist at the lodge situated on the R518, near Masodi village.

They had been strangled with their hands tied from the back.

“It is alleged that on January 12  at about 7pm, a man and woman with their nine-month-old baby were dropped at the gate of the lodge. Apparently they rented a room for overnight accommodation without providing their personal information and promised the receptionist they would check out the next day.

“Two days later, the receptionist went to check on them and made the gruesome discovery. The male who came to the lodge with the mother and child was not present,” said police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

The police were immediately notified and activated a 72-hour plan which included Crime Intelligence, a tracking team, detectives and other supporting units. A massive manhunt was then launched.

On Thursday evening the partner of the deceased woman, a 29-year-old man, was arrested in Brixton, Johannesburg.

Ngoepe said the motive behind the murders was unclear but the police could not rule out the possibility of domestic violence.

Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Nneke Ledwaba welcomed the arrest. He said the swift action should send a clear message to those involved in heinous crimes, especially against women and children, that they will be brought to book.

The suspect was expected to appear in the Mokerong magistrate’s court on Friday.

Police investigations are ongoing.

20-year-old man arrested and imprisoned for leaking 's.e.x tape' of President Buhari's appointee, Chief Willie Amadi

An Imo State Magistrate Court, sitting at Umundugba, Isu local government area of the state, has convicted a 20-year-old school leaver, Peter Nwoke, for being the mastermind of a simulated group s.e.x video that recently went viral, allegedly involving the state’s Public Complaints Commissioner, Chief Willie Amadi.

Giving a graphic account of what happened to the Magistrate, His Worship, C. P. Nnoromele, in suit number MCI/2C/2021, the Prosecutor, Mr Okereke Chikodi, said that soon after getting a formal complaint from Chief Willie Amadi, the Commissioner of Police set up a crack team of detectives to go after the people behind the alleged crime.

According to the Prosecutor, after a painstaking investigation by the detectives, Peter Nwoke was arrested and he freely made a confessional statement to the police.

Mr Nwoke was, according to the charge sheet, accused of “defamation of character, an offence punishable under Section 373 of Criminal Code, Cap C38 Laws of the Federation 2004, as applicable in Imo State”.

When the matter was called up in court Tuesday, January 19, 2021, and the charge read out to the accused person, he pleaded guilty to the charge

The accused, in his confessional statement at the police station, which he equally repeated in court, recalled how he picked a mobile phone at Owerri and left for his place in Isu local government area of the state.

Nwoke also recalled that a day after picking the phone and powered it, he got a call from a man who introduced himself as Barr. Willie Amadi, saying that he was the owner of the phone he was holding.

His words: “I asked him to come to Umuogbor Isuobishi, Isunjaba in Isu LGA to collect the phone and he came, collected and gave me N40,000. “Before then, I had transferred some information from his phone to mine, which included pictures he took in a swimming pool.

“When he left, greed and the devil came into me. I thought I should make more money from him. Seeing his car and realizing that he is a big man, I decided to superimpose one of his pictures on a sex background to force him to negotiate a settlement with me.

“When I called him severally, and he did not pick my calls, I became angry and decided to send the pictures out through the internet. “Three days after, I was at a joint with some people, when the police arrested me.

I confessed to the act at the police station because I did not know that what I did will bring such a big problem to me. “I begged him to forgive me and promised not to do such a thing again.” The Magistrate, after listening with rapt attention, to the prosecution and the plea of guilt by the accused person, found him guilty of defamation under Section 373 of Criminal Code, Cap C38 Laws of the Federation 2004 as applicable in Imo state.

The accused was therefore convicted and sentenced to one-year imprisonment, which the presiding Magistrate said, “would to serve as a deterrent to other young people, who may be threading on such dastardly path”.

All efforts made by Vanguard to get the views of Chief Amadi, on the outcome of the police investigation and prosecution of the suspected mastermind of the viral sex video, proved abortive, as he neither picked nor returned the calls put across to him before press time.

Kaduna government sacks 65 ‘illegally recruited teachers’

The Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) on Friday confirmed the sack of 65 primary school teachers, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

They were allegedly recruited illegally in Sanga Local Government Area of the state.

SUBEB’s Auditor, Tandat Katuma, who served as the secretary of the investigation committee, confirmed the development to NAN in Kaduna.

The council’s chairman, Charles Danladi, had on Wednesday announced the sack of the teachers to journalists in Gwantu, the council headquarters.

Mr Danladi alleged that the anomaly was detected through the over-bloated wage bill of the teachers, which kept increasing every month without new employment.

To this effect, an alarm was raised.

He said Mr Danladi raised the alarm during the state’s Joint Account Committee Meeting, being chaired by the deputy governor and that SUBEB was asked to investigate the allegation.

“After our investigation, we confirmed that 65 teachers were illegally recruited in the area.

“Their appointments have been terminated.

EU call for probe into Uganda election violence as Bobi Wine remains under house arrest

The European Union has joined a growing number of international voices calling for a probe into Ugandan election abuses and violence that left more than 40 people dead in the lead up to the polls.

Opposition candidates were harassed by security forces, the media was suppressed by the government, and observers' offices were raided, said the EU Council of Ministers in a statement on Wednesday.

It called on all parties to refrain from violence and for "election challenges and complaints to be addressed in an independent and transparent manner."

Uganda's longtime leader President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner for a record sixth term, amid an internet blackout and allegations of abuse.

Wine -- a singer-turned-politician, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi -- has been under house arrest after the military surrounded his home on Friday. He maintains the election was rigged.

"I thank all friends in Uganda and abroad who continue to stand with us until we put an end to this indignity," he said in a tweet on Thursday.

The 18-month old niece of Wine's wife, Barbara Itungo Kyagulanyi, is in the residence and her father has been denied access because nobody is allowed to leave or come into the compound, Wine said on Twitter.

Human rights groups spoke out against Wine's detention and the political climate in the country as President Museveni embarked on an election victory tour of the country Thursday.

"It is neither a crime to stand for president nor to want to challenge the election results in court," said the regional director of the human rights NGO, Deprose Muchena, in a statement.

"This continued confinement is politically motivated and a blatant violation of their human rights. It must be lifted immediately and without any conditions."

In the weeks leading up to the election, there were several incidences of violence and human rights violations said Human Rights Watch.

"The abuses included killings by security forces, arrests and beatings of opposition supporters and journalists, disruption of opposition rallies, and a shutdown of the internet," said the international human rights NGO in a statement.
