How I contracted COVID-19 from my kids – Victoria Inyama

At a time when many thought that the coronavirus pandemic was coming to an end, there is now a second wave of the virus in Nigeria, which appears to be more virulent.

Many celebrities and notable personalities, who contracted the virus, have spoken about their ordeals, and a United Kingdom-based actress, Victoria Inyama, has lent her voice to the call for people to take the virus more seriously.

Sharing her experience with Sunday Scoop, Inyama said, “I have learnt how to appreciate every second because life is so fragile. My experience of COVID-19 was sleep paralysis— that feeling of being conscious but unable to move or even speak due to very painful breathing and tightening of the chest. That is the moment when most people (who have the virus) die. It is a bit like choking on one’s air supply.

“I was still positive as of the time l left the hospital last week. My doctor says l am now dealing with ‘Long COVID’, which is the term used to describe the effects of COVID-19 that continues for weeks or months.

" I wish people would be serious with their health. It is important to wear a mask, avoid gatherings, wash hands regularly, and avoid hugging or standing closer than two feet.”

The mental health advocate also revealed that all her children tested positive for the virus. She added, “One of my kids contracted it in school. And, while l was trying to care for each of them, l got it too. We all tested positive, so l guess they were mentally ready.

Our government made the mistake of reopening schools which made this wave of the virus spread so fast from the children to their parents. No amount of precautions could have helped parents like me.

I also feel the Nigerian government is not safeguarding the people. How on earth can a government that claims to be reasonable ‘force’ people to register their mobile phones? That is a process that involves people gathering in large numbers. Because of this, l don’t blame people who doubt the existence of the virus in Nigeria.”

Police arrest 3 members of Eiye cult group in Ogun

Three members of Eiye confraternity have been arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for threatening to kill one Teslim Lateef over his refusal to be initiated into the cult group.

The suspects: Olajide Shittu, 32 years, Emmanuel Fidelis, 29 years and Sunkanmi Ifelodun, 39 years were arrested on 28 January following a report lodged at Ajuwon police station by Lateef that the three suspects have been threatening to kill him for quite some time now over his refusal to be initiated into Eiye confraternity despite their persistent appeal to him.

He stated further that they vowed to eliminate him since he has known them to be members of the Eiye Confraternity so that he will not expose them.

On the strength of the report, the DPO Ajuwon division, SP Andrew Akinseye who has been monitoring the suspects, led his men to their hideout where the three suspects were apprehended.

They have all confessed to being members of Eiye cult group and that they were trying to recruit more members into their fold.

The state commissioner of police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun has ordered the transfer of the suspects to state criminal investigation and intelligence department for discreet investigation.

The CP also warned cultists in the state to make use of the opportunity given to them by the command to renounce their membership of those evil groups before the long arm of the law caught up with them.

How Obasanjo stopped Tinubu from becoming Buhari’s VP in 2015– Oyinlola

A former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has revealed how former President Olusegun Obasanjo truncated the ambition of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to become the running mate to Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), who was the APC presidential candidate in 2015.

Oyinlola explained that even though Obasanjo was the last person to throw his weight behind Buhari’s candidature, having opposed the re-election of the then President, Goodluck Jonathan, he was eventually prevailed upon to support the former military ruler.

In an interview with one of Punch correspondents, Oyinlola, who was once the military administrator of Lagos State, pointed out that there was already an agreement between Buhari and Tinubu before 2015 that they would be presidential and vice-presidential candidates respectively, a deal he said was initially hidden from most party members.

This development, according to him, led to some uneasiness in the party as they feared that a Muslim-Muslim ticket could cost the APC victory in the election, given the near-equal population of Christians and Muslims in the country and the sensitivity that surrounds religion issues in the country.

Prior to the 2015 elections, political parties always ensured their presidential candidates and their running mates emerged from the two dominant religions, with the only exception being the MKO Abiola/Babagana Kingibe candidacy on the platform of the Social Democratic Party in the June 12, 1993 election.

Even though Abiola and Kingibe, who were the presidential candidate and running mate respectively, eventually won the election, it is regarded as a one-off scenario. The election was later annulled by the regime of the then dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida.

Meanwhile, speaking further, Oyinlola explained that if not for Obasanjo’s intervention, the APC would likely have gone ahead with the Muslim-Muslim ticket and the party could have found it difficult to displace the government in power, especially when all reservations that surfaced over the proposed Muslim-Muslim ticket had been dismissed.

He added, “The agreement was concealed from a good number of the party leaders until it surfaced after Buhari had got the ticket. Then the rumour came out and some us felt danger was looming with the idea of Muslim-Muslim ticket. To further add to our fears, General Buhari on one occasion said there was nothing wrong in the Muslim-Muslim presidential arrangement, saying after all he governed with Tunde Idiagbon.

“That statement made us to know it (the Muslim-Muslim idea) was a fact. On two occasions, Bola (Tinubu) mentioned it in my presence that they agreed. If you recall one trending video back then, where it was said that Buhari had jettisoned what they agreed on, that is the room he was sleeping when Buhari was looking for the post.

“We then told Baba (Obasanjo). We told him that taking power from an incumbent government was a tough task and we must not give room for excuse and miss the target. We told him they (Buhari and Tinubu) were thinking of a Muslim-Muslim ticket. That was when Baba (Obasanjo) said people should not take the sensibilities of Nigerians for granted.”

He said after Obasanjo’s intervention succeeded in changing the decision, some people started spreading the news that Obasanjo frustrated the plan to make Tinubu the vice-presidential candidate.

He added, “After that (Obasanjo’s intervention), they started saying it in my presence that Obasanjo frustrated the plan to get Tinubu on the ticket for 2015 but I always acted as if I didn’t hear them. We then had a stakeholders meeting where the issue of the running mate was discussed again.”

In addition to Obasanjo’s input, Oyinlola said a former governor of Gombe State, Danjuma Goje, also cautioned against the Muslim-Muslim ticket, especially because the party needed all the votes it could get from different parts of the country.

He added, “At the meeting, ex-governor Goje, rose up and said in the northern part, there is negligible number of Christians. He said the APC would need every vote to upstage the incumbent, so nobody should toy with the idea of a Muslim-Muslim ticket and everybody concurred. I think it was even Bola (Tinubu) that suggested that the matter should be taken before some leaders to resolve. But we never saw anything like that again.”

Igangan people impose curfew on themselves over fear of reprisal attacks after eviction of Seriki Fulani

A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed on Igangan communities as part of efforts to curtail the likelihood of reprisal attacks over the eviction of herders penultimate Friday.

The decision was arrived at by residents and indigenes, including, the traditional ruler, community leaders and youth groups.

They also demanded an investigative committee to look into allegations of atrocities and crimes levelled against evicted Seriki Fulani of Oyo state, Abdulkadir Saliu.

Convener, Igangan Development Advocates, Oladokun Oladiran, told The Nation the curfew option was because of lack of faith in security measures by the government.

He said I have not seen the 200 Amotekun operatives reportedly deployed by Governor Seyi Makinde.

He urged the Governor to personally visit the affected communities to see things for himself, especially the havocs unleashed on residents by criminal herdsmen.

Family tackles police as woman is arrested for murder because a man accused of ''kidnapping'' her little cousins was nabbed and killed

The family of one Munirat Makanjuola, a resident of Mogaji Compound, Freeman Street, Lagos Island, has accused the police of unlawfully detaining the 25-year-old woman and charging her with murder and arson involving a man accused of kidnapping.

The man said to be a cop whose identity could not be ascertained was reportedly burnt to death by a mob in the area on December 12, 2020.

City Round learnt that Makanjuola was asleep with her cousins – Deborah, six and five-year-old Khadijat, when a man later identified simply as Aileru sneaked into their apartment and reportedly abducted the two girls.

As he was leaving, Aileru, who was said to be residing in the neighbourhood, reportedly hit his leg on an object which created a noise and awoke Makanjuola.

She reportedly raised the alarm which drew the attention of people partying on the street. They were said to have chased Aileru and caught him.

Aileru when beaten up and probed reportedly identified his alleged accomplice as the policeman, whose identity had yet to be ascertained.

It was gathered that the policeman, who was within the vicinity, was accosted that night by the angry youths and while he was being tortured, he tried to escape. A mob chased after him and tracked him down at Sura area where he was set ablaze.

Makanjuola’s stepbrother, Sulaimon Saheed, who spoke to City Round on behalf of the family, said she was invited three days after to the Adeniji Adele Police Station to write a statement but was eventually detained.

He said, “My sister lives with my mother at Mogaji Compound, Lagos Island. She was the one taking care of our cousins, Khadijat and Deborah, who also live with our mum. I was not living with them so I didn’t know about the incident until three days after.

“On the day the incident happened, a party was going on outside when the man (Aileru) sneaked into her room around 2am and abducted the two kids. As he was leaving, his leg hit something and my sister woke up. She shouted and he rushed to take cover in an abandoned building close by. He was caught that night and it turned out that he was a known face on Lagos Island. His name is Aileru.

“He mentioned one man as the person who sent him to abduct the children and that they had known each other for some time. The man was also within the vicinity and was picked up that night. While people were beating them, the man tried to escape. They trailed him to Sura and set him on fire. Aileru was eventually freed.

“The police claimed that the suspect was a policeman serving at the Adeniji Adele Police Station.”

Saheed explained on December 15, the police invited Makanjuola to the station to write her statement but on getting there, she was detained.

He said the family confronted the Divisional Police Officer, Adeniji Adele Police Station for detaining her and he told them to produce Aileru before she would be released.

At that time, Aileru’s family was said to have taken him out of Lagos as Makanjuola was consequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba.

Saheed said, “Aileru was later arrested but we learnt that he had been freed. We met some policemen – one Olusola, Ayo, a female, and their team leader, Musa. They told us it is a case of murder and arson and asked us to give them money so they could change the charge.

Saheed said to the family’s shock, Makanjuola was arraigned at Yaba Magistrates’ Court on December 30.

But the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, insisted that Makanjuola was culpable in the jungle justice.

He said, “Munirat was actually involved in the killing of the man. She has a case to answer and has been charged. She is in remand on the order of the court in our facility pending the outcome of her COVID-19 test. He will be moved to the correctional centre.  So, the police have not detained her unlawfully.”

Japanese woman hid her mother’s corpse in a freezer for 10 years to avoid paying rent

A Japanese woman who said she hid her mother’s corpse in a freezer in her apartment for a decade told police she feared eviction if the death was discovered, media reported Saturday.

Police told AFP that Yumi Yoshino, 48, was held “on suspicion of abandoning and hiding a female body” found Wednesday in a freezer in a Tokyo apartment.

Yoshino said after finding her mother dead 10 years ago, she hid the body because she “didn’t want to move out” of the home they shared, local media reported, citing unnamed police sources.

The mother, thought to have been aged around 60 at the time of her death, was named on the lease of the apartment in a municipal housing complex, Kyodo News said.

Yoshino had been forced to leave the apartment in mid-January after missing rent payments, according to the reports, and a cleaner then discovered the body in a freezer hidden in a closet.

An autopsy could not determine the time and cause of the woman’s death, while there were no visible wounds on the frozen body, the reports said.

The body had been bent to fit in the freezer, police told Jiji Press.

Yoshino was arrested in a hotel in the city of Chiba, near Tokyo, on Friday.

Rape in school bus! Face of driver who did the unthinkable

Men of Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 36-year-old school bus driver, Humble Michael, for having an unlawful carnal knowledge of a four-year-old pupil in the school bus.

The suspect was arrested on Saturday after the mother of the victim reported the matter at Ogijo Divisional headquarters.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

Oyeyemi said the mother of the victim told the police that “while her husband was bathing her daughter, he discovered that blood was gushing out of her private part, and when the girl was questioned, she disclosed to her parents that the driver of their school bus was the person who had sex with her on the 21st of January 2021 on their way coming from school.

“The victim stated further that after the driver had dropped all other school children at their various homes, she was the only person left in the bus, this gave the driver opportunity to park somewhere along the road and defiled the little innocent girl.”

The PPRO added that upon the report, the DPO Ogijo Division, CSP Muhammed Sulaiman Baba detailed his operatives to go after the suspect and got him arrested.

He said, “The victim was quickly taken to General hospital for treatment and the doctor’s report confirmed that she had been sexually abused.

“On interrogation, the suspect admitted that he actually committed the crime.”

Oyeyemi, however, said, the Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the anti-human trafficking and child labour unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.

He added that the CP also appealed to parents to always make the wellbeing of their children especially female ones a number one priority so as to keep them safe from those evil men lurking around everywhere.
