Return home, Northern Elders tell herdsmen in the South

Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has urged herdsmen to return to the northern region if their security could not be guaranteed in their host communities in the southern part of the country.

NEF also told northern Governors to commence preparation to receive the Fulani communities being ejected from southern states.

NEF Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, in a statement, said the relocation advice became necessary following alleged attack on herders, families and communities in some states of the south.

The forum warned the nation would be treading dangerous grounds if it continued to tolerate demonisation of entire groups over particular types of crimes.

The elders called on President Muhammadu Buhari and Governors to “protect law-abiding members of Fulani communities from killers and criminals who apparently believe that Fulani has no rights in Nigeria.”

The statement reads in part: “NEF is deeply worried by reports of ejections, under threats and attacks, of Fulani herders, families and communities in some states of the south.

“The forum has been receiving these reports since the night of Sunday, January 31, and has taken the responsible step by drawing the attention of authorities to the dangers, which these attacks represent for all Nigerians.

“We have also advised law-abiding Fulani communities to seek protection where it is available, and have appealed to other Fulani to resist the temptation to take the law into their own hands.

“It is necessary to warn people who threaten law-abiding Fulani communities in all parts of Nigeria, but particularly in some parts of the South, to desist.

“Majority of Fulani are law-abiding and have rights to live lawfully wherever they can find means of subsistence.

“The Fulani will not be ejected from any Nigerian community only on the basis of being Fulani or herding cattle within the limits of laws and regulations.

“States that seek to limit criminal activities are perfectly entitled to do so, but they must follow due process, and avoid exposing innocent citizens to danger at all cost.

“The forum demands that the Nigeria Police must live up to its constitutional responsibility to detect crimes and arrest and prosecute criminals, whoever they are.”

The elders appealed to Nigerians to exercise restraint and not play into the hands of people who desire to achieve dubious political goals by pitting citizens against each other.

32 mourners die in accident on their way to bury corpse

Thirty-two people died and five were injured on Tuesday when a truck carrying mourners and a coffin collided with a car and three other vehicles in Uganda, the Ugandan Red Cross said.

“The road is small, it’s under construction and it was dark,” said Nakasiita.

Shortly afterwards, two trucks coming from Kasese ploughed into the crash site and a third coming in the opposite direction, from Bundibugyo, also struck the vehicles and overturned.

“So it made up five cars all involved at the same scene,” said Nakasiita.

Red Cross staff and volunteers worked with Ugandan soldiers to transport the dead and evacuated the five survivors.

Video: Edo women protest against Fulani heardsmen

Several women on Wednesday blocked major roads in Uromi, headquarters of Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State to protest the activities of criminal herdsmen which they said have brought hardship to their communities.

The women accused the herdsmen of armed robbery, r3ping, and destruction of farmlands, among other crimes.

The women took their protest to the Palace of the Onojie, Anselm Edenojie, and the Divisional Police headquarters in Uromi, and demanded the immediate removal of herdsmen from their lands.

One of the protesting women however said they were not able to see the monarch and the divisional police officer to present their complaint.

The women, who came from the main Uromi town and neighbouring villages, assembled in the city centre where they set up a bonfire.

They later divided themselves into smaller groups and blocked major roads in the town, chanting solidarity songs.

Another protester, Angela Esangbedo, said they could no longer access their farmlands for fear of being r3ped.

Herdsmen: Ogun PDP blasts Ogun Government, says your disclaimer on Igboho shameless

The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lambasted the Ogun State government for saying it did not invite Sunday Adeyemo to help solve its security challenges.

Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, on Monday, stormed Igua, Yewa North Local area of Ogun State to chase away herdsmen, days after he visited Igangan in Oyo State to sack Fulani herdsmen, whom he accused of killings, kidnapping among others.

It was reported that houses belonging to Fulani herdsmen and a cow market were set ablaze in Igua during his visit.

But, the Ogun State Government, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Waheed Odusile, said it did not seek the assistance of Sunday Igboho in Ogun.

Reacting, the PDP said, “the shameless disclaimer on the intervention of Chief Sunday Adeyemo is clear evidence that all is not well with the government.

“It is a manifestation of the fact that the government is not only confused by its manifest failures in core areas of governance, it shows that the government is obviously bereft of problem-solving ideas and initiatives.”

In a statement signed by the State Chairman, Sikirulahi Ogundele, the PDP recalled that “the ruling APC government in Ogun State has earlier made a public statement through one Remi Hazzan on purported invitation to the popular Pan Yoruba activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, on the growing advocacy for self-help in the face of deteriorating issues of security across the South West zone and Ogun State in particular.”

The party said it was, however, not too surprised to see the same government, in what it called its “unending penchant for confusion and ‘trial and error’, issuing a disclaimer to what its official had earlier confirmed”; saying it “wonders when the ruling government would desist from blowing cold and hot at the same time.”

The statement reads in part:

“For us as a pro-people party, the government’s disclaimer seems to be an attempt to pull wool to cover the eyes of Ogun people from the facts. The denial is a blatant attempt to massage the ego of the General Muhamadu Buhari-led federal government.

“In the last few days, we heard the news of how Fulani herdsmen were allegedly led by a team of fully armed military personnel into a sleepy rural community around Ijoun, Yewa North axis of Ogun state. The reports of harassment, beating, and molestation of locals and some community leaders who tried to prevent the trespass by the herdsmen was conveniently waved off by the ruling government.

“On this, the ruling APC government maintains silence all in a desperate attempt to satisfy the whims and caprices of the Federal Government, which has successfully turned itself into the official mouthpiece of criminal elements amongst the herdsmen.

However, as a political party with good conscience, we shall continue to follow, educate and mobilise members of the public on all insecurity challenges going on in Ogun State and in Nigeria with rapt alertness and will issue full condemnation to the killings of innocent citizens and residents by foreign or local Fulani or any criminal group in the state.

“Without any delay, we make bold to, therefore, call on the ruling government to go an extra mile and be bold enough to engage all stakeholders in the State and South West, particularly anyone or group who volunteers to assist the state in stemming the current trend of insecurity.”

2 FBI agents killed, others injured while serving warrant in Florida [Video]

Two FBI agents were killed on Tuesday morning and three others were wounded while trying to serve a search warrant at a home in Sunrise, Fla., in a child p.o.r.n.o.g.r.a.p.h.y case, the FBI confirmed to Fox News. The suspect is also dead.

The incident unfolded around 6 a.m. in the vicinity of 10100 Reflections Boulevard, Sunrise, Florida. Two of the wounded agents were transported to the hospital and are in stable condition, the FBI said. The names of the deceased will not be released at this time, they added.

The Sunrise Police Department said that residents in neighborhoods along Nob Hill Road, between NW 44th Street and West Oakland Park Boulevard. were asked to remain in their homes, and were unable to leave their communities due to the traffic shutdown on Nob Hill Road.

Shortly before 10 a.m., the department sent out an alert to all residents that there was "no danger to the public," but that there would still be "a large police presence in the area through the day."

Multiple law enforcement agencies descended on the scene where the suspect was reportedly barricaded in their home. Officers from the Sunrise Police Department, Miramar SWAT team, Davies Police Department, and Fort Lauderdale Police Department were all on site.

A spokesperson for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department told Fox News they were sending a "small SWAT contingency" to assist with the ongoing situation.

The shooting incident is under investigation by the FBI’s Inspection Division, which is part of the department's policy.

"The review process is thorough and objective and is conducted as expeditiously as possible under the circumstances," an FBI spokesperson told Fox News in a statement.

Hoodlums burn police station, kill Inspector, loot armoury in Abia

The Abia Police Command says it is hunting for hoodlums who attacked a police station in Umuoba community in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of the state and killed a police inspector.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna confirmed in a statement on Tuesday in Aba that the hoodlums came on Monday at about 3 a.m.

Ogbonna said that the hoodlums who attacked the police station also burnt the station and its operational vehicles.

“In the course of that attack, one inspector lost his life, another policewoman was seriously injured.

“The hoodlums then broke into the armoury of the police at the station and stole some arms, including the gun of the inspector who was killed.

“They also burnt down the station and the vehicles parked in the premises, including one of our serviceable patrol vans.

“The body of the inspector has been taken to the mortuary while the policewoman is being treated,” he said.

Ogbonna said the police in Abia had begun investigations to unravel the cause of the attack.

He urged the residents to be watchful and be on the lookout in their communities for intruders and unknown faces.

He also called on hoteliers to volunteer credible information on certain visitors who would want to leave the hotels at midnight to commit crimes.

The police promised to protect the details of anybody who volunteered information that could lead to the arrest of the hoodlums.

Protest in Ogun as Customs shoot suspected smuggler dead

Smugglers in Ogun stormed the road leading to the governor’s office in Abeokuta on Tuesday to protest the killing of one of their members by operatives of the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS.

The customs were said to have shot and killed a suspected smuggler and injured three others at Orile-Imo.

The protesters said they could no longer bear the hardship and injustice meted out to their members by the Nigerian customs and called on the government to intervene.

One of the smugglers who spoke with newsmen on condition of anonymity, said on several occasions when their rice or car goods arrived Ita-Osun Kobape area of Ogun state, they would always put calls across to customs that their goods had arrived and that they normally collect N5000 on every good most, especially cars.

“Every time goods arrive Ita-Osun we put a call to them and they will come to collect money from us. We used to do this so that they will not disturb us and they will still go behind us by calling their colleagues from Ikeja-Lagos to accost us.

“After collecting money from us they will call their colleagues from Ikeja to come and accost us again. Sometimes they seize goods worth of N5 million from us depending on how many cars we are able to acquire per day. Every time they collect N5000 from us per car, if we are able to acquire 100 cars from our base at Ita-Osun , they collect N500,000,” he said.

“Today, we were done with our business at our base at Ita-Osun and we were on our way when they suddenly attacked us at Orile-Imo area of Sagamu, Ogun State where one of us Lekan was shot in the chest and stomach and three sustained injuries,” he lamented.

The protesters called on the state governor, Dapo Abiodun to come to their aide as customs officers continued to kill them after collecting huge sums of money from them.

“We are here to appeal to the government to come to our aide, we don’t go to Cotonou to buy our cars and rice, we buy them here in Ogun and they cannot continue to kill us. This is what we know how to do, we can’t steal or do money ritual.

“We settle them every time we buy goods so that they won’t disturb us or us business.” he cried out.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG) ,Mr Tokunbo Talabi, appealed to the protesters and assured them of appropriate actions, as the welfare of the citizens is paramount to the government.

Dubai shuts all bars and clubs over Covid spike after Brit influencers who flocked there mocked travel ban

Dubai shuts all bars and clubs over Covid spike after Brit influencers who flocked there mocked travel ban

Dubai is closing all its bars and pubs in February following a Covid spike after British influencers mocked a travel ban.

It follows an increase in Covid cases across the UAE, which has attracted social media stars fleeing lockdown UK.

Last week, the UAE was added to a 'red list' of countries where travel to the UK is banned.

This means all direct flights from the UAE to Britain have been suspended in a bid to stop the new South African variant of Covid-19.

People who choose to fly home from Dubai using indirect flights will be forced to self-isolate at home for 10 days or stay in Government arranged hotel quarantine.

A spokesman for the Dubai Media Office blamed "a marked increase in the number of violations of precautionary measures" for the shutdown of its bars and clubs.

It also blames a spike in Covid cases after New Year's Eve.

The spokesman said: "The measures seek to further enhance efforts to combat Covid-19, and protect the health and safety of all citizens, residents and visitors."

However, restaurants in Dubai will remain open and influencers will still be allowed to lounge by the pool.

Last week British influencers in Dubai taunted the travel ban that means they can no longer fly home saying: "Oh what a shame."
