UK may 'never' fully return to normal after Covid pandemic, top virologist warns

The UK may never get fully back to how it was before the pandemic with masks worn for years, a top virologist has warned.

While fears over mutant strains of Covid-19 could see Brits locked out of concert stadiums, sporting events and nightclubs with social distancing a key concern until into 2022.

Dr Phillip Gould of Coventry University says scientists' "biggest worry" is that new mutations in the coronavirus could threaten to move the UK's vaccine programme back.

The more transmissible variant discovered in Kent has spread across the population and has "out-competed the previous version, slowly taking over", said the expert, who is Coventry University’s Associate Head of School for Health and Life Sciences.

It and the South African strain have raised fears among scientists that Covid-19 mutations could prove resistant to currently-approved vaccines.

Dr Gould sounded a note of optimism, as "amazing" new technology developed by scientists allows them to "adapt the vaccine, like we do every year with the flu vaccine".

But while the UK is “lucky” to have vaccinated so many people at this point, and “well ahead of the game with vaccinations”, those hoping for a return to full normality anytime soon may be disappointed, the doctor warns.

And we may never go back to exactly how life was before the pandemic, with certain precautions becoming the norm forever - and social distancing until late this year, or even further.

“I think social distancing will remain for a long time,” says Dr Gould. “Our way of life will change long-term.

“Wearing a face mask in shops and on buses will remain for a long time, even after places and businesses have opened up.

“The economy can get going in summer - but it won’t look like a normal summer.

“We need long-term immunity and vaccination.”

The wearing of masks and the fastidious washing of hands has already become a way of life in the UK, Dr Gould suggests, as it is in, for example, East Asian countries who experienced previous pandemics.

“People’s perceptions have changed dramatically,” he says. “People go ‘where are my keys, where is my phone, and where is my mask’.”

And while there is hope of some reprieve for bored Brits in the form of a summer holiday, it is unlikely that social events will be back with a bang anytime soon.

The virologist does not see Britain’s bustling nightlife scene returning to the way it was this year.

And there is little chance big sporting events will be able to enjoy big crowds for many months.

“Not piling into places will remain the same for this year, definitely, long term,” he added.

“We will have changed our culture dramatically, like not going to work if you’re feeling a bit ill - something many of us used to do.

“Are high risk places like nightclubs going to insist you have a test or vaccine before you go in?

“Will we ever get the big football crowds back again? Long-term it’s possible."

Dr Gould cited last year's Cheltenham Festival - which has been blamed for a spike in cases in Gloucestershire after attracting 250,000 people between March 10 and 13 - and the Champions League match between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid - which went ahead on March 22 with thousands of away fans allowed in despite the Spanish capital emerging as a Covid epicentre - as "big peaks" in transmission.

“We will be vaccinated, tests will be available, but I can’t see it until we are really confident that the vaccine programme is rolled-out - and that won't be until the end of the year," he added.

Dr Gould also suggested that rapid lateral flow tests, which use a mouth and/or nose swab, and can take about 15 minutes to give a result, will become very common before big events.

“We need to make sure the herd immunity is up, from the vaccination programme,” he adds.

Dr Gould, whose research interests is based around the molecular characterisation of respiratory viruses, is optimistic that new vaccines can be made "quickly".

Hisbah allegedly arrest police officer for buying beer in Kano

The Kano State Islamic Police Corps, Hisbah and Kano State Road Traffic Authority (KAROTA) have arrested an inspector of the Nigerian Police Force for purchasing beer.

A source told SaharaReporters that the police officer, popularly known as OC Gulder, is a Christian who manages the police mess at Panshekara, Mopol 52 in the Sharada area of the state.

According to the source, OC Gulder usually goes to Sabon Gari town to buy beer and other things to sell at the police mess he manages.

He said the KAROTA had trailed the officer to the town and arrested him after which they handed him over to Hisbah for allegedly supplying 1,000 cartons of beer to a beer dealer in the state.

The source said, "He was not there to supply beer; he only comes to town to buy and resell. He is a Christian, he has the liberty to buy and drink beer. I suspect other officers in the station hate him because he manages police mess at Mopol 52 in Sharada area of Kano state.

"He's an inspector for that matter. We call him OC Gulder. Last Saturday, he came into town again. We have a state police called KAROTA, under Gwangwashu, there's another one called Hisbah, also under the state but the Nigeria Police Force is superior to them. This officer was coming with a police vehicle and KAROTA stopped him, he did not stop because he is an officer.

"Then they followed him and accused him of using a police vehicle to supply beer, he told them he was a police officer. These KAROTA officers arrested the police officer and took him to one police station along Sabon Gari. They came with 4 hilux buses, armed. Then they went to report to Hisbah that the officer was bringing beer to Kano, that they were stopping him and he didn't stop.

"They said he wanted to spoil their religion. Hisbah then gave the order, and packed over 1,000 cartons of beer bottles from one Obinna's shop in Sabon Gari. They did this to implicate the police officer. They said it was the police officer that brought beer for the young man but he told them he had only come to purchase beer. But it was already late, it was around 1am.

"Now, Obinna said when the officer called him, he told the officer he had closed but the officer said because of his police work, he would be on duty and that time was the only time he had to go to Obinna's shop to make his purchase. Obinna is from Enugu State.

"The police officer is still locked up in their cell."

''HALLELUYAH!!!

THE GIRL IS 57 TODAY.

Only God Can Give a Man a Good Wife.

If I have not Found Jesus Christ, I would have missed YOU!.

Because WHEN I knew I had a Call of God on My Life, I knew I would never succeed in Life unless I got it Right in the Place of Marriage.

I knew I could Marry just any Sister and just have some Children, but not the Ordained Sister from Heaven who would give me the Children She Could sit down to train.

I knew I did my part in training our children, but the greater duties was taken by GLORIA.

She was never tired of sitting them down to teach them the Word of God.

She was never tired of giving them Cautions.

She was never tired of even controlling how they eat and what they eat.

GLORIA IS AN IDEAL WIFE.

If I had not accepted Jesus Christ, I would have missed HER.

Because I would never have heard the Voice that spoke to me that morning to leave where I was and travel to where I met her for the first time.

I thank God oooooo!

I thank God that all the Sisters I approached previously turned down my Proposals.

God bless them all for turning down my Proposals.

I was Blind.

I did not see that NONE of them was the Ordained One.

I did not know.

But Jesus Christ made them all to turn down my Proposals.

Until I Proposed to the Only Sister Who did not turn me back, but prayed over my Proposals and replied me after One Month.

Ah! She never saw any inadequacies in me but VISIONS and CALLING and MINISTRY.

No job, but ministry.

No house but Only One Room that contained all my belongings: standing hanger, cupboard, bookshelf, cooking pots and a standing Fan that had no leg and a small black and white Television.

She saw into the future!

She saw Greatness and Relevance in the future.

She Married me at 24!

TODAY, SHE IS 57 and still growing Stronger in Him!

Still Looking Radiant and Beautiful!

On Behalf of Dammy and Ella, Joshua and Tolu, Dara and Lawrence and our Grand Child, Gloria Zion, we all Say:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY,

MUMMY GLORIA!

Eating less meat can help reduce risk of pandemic — UN

Eating less meat can help reduce the risk of a pandemic, in addition to saving the environment, the UN Environment Programme said on Wednesday.

The programme said this while announcing a new Chatham House report. “At a time when so much of the world continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s never been more obvious that the well-being of people and animals, wild and farmed, are intertwined,” said Philip Lymbery, of Compassion in World Farming, which also backed the think tank. If ecosystems continue to be destroyed, the population’s food supply will be at risk, they warned.

A move towards more plant-based foods are necessary to ensure biodiversity loss will not accelerate, they add.

In addition, more land needs to be protected, and agriculture needs to become more environmentally friendly, they said.

Natural ecosystems have been increasingly converted into arable land and pasture in recent decades, leading to the loss of animal habitats.

“The intensive farming of billions of animals globally seriously damages the environment, causing loss of biodiversity and producing massive greenhouse gas emissions that accelerate global warming,” said famed primatologist Jane Goodall in the UNEP statement.
