My mum is older than my dad but didn't want us to know — Iyabo Ojo reveals

Actress, Iyabo Ojo, has revealed that her late mother was older than her father but often claimed to be younger so that people would not know.

Ojo, who is called ‘Nigeria’s Tik Tok queen’ by some of her fans made this known in the recent edition of her vlog, Bare it all with IY.

She said, “My dad’s name was Festus Adekunle Ogunro and he died about 19 years ago. My mum recently passed on at the age of 69. Do you know that my mum lied to me about her age? She actually cut two years off her age because she was older than my dad and she didn’t want us to know. She is gone and I miss her so much.”

Taking her fans down memory lane, the award-winning movie star recounted how she had to continue her education after she got married.

“In 1999, I met my husband and I got pregnant. We got married and I had my son. In 2000, I decided to go back to school and I registered for a part-time course at the Lagos State Polytechnic, Isolo, Lagos (Surulere campus).I was going to school, in addition to being married and doing business. I had to leave acting for a while because I had a baby and had to go back to school. In between that, I got pregnant again and had my beautiful daughter, Priscilla.”

NDLEA raids Edo forest, seizes N1.4bn worth of cannabis

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Edo State have seized cannabis valued at N1.4bn in Ukpuje Forest, in the Owan West Local Government Area of the State

Seven suspects were also arrested in connection with cannabis weighing 233,778 kilograms reportedly found in four warehouses.

While 2,249kg dried weeds were seized, cannabis weighing 231,529kg was destroyed on the farm.

A statement on Saturday by the state Commander of the agency, Buba Wakawa, noted that the seizure was the largest single concentration of cannabis discovered by the command.

Wakawa ascribed the success of the operation to the enabling environment created by the new Chief Executive of the Agency, Brigadier General Buba Marwa.

He said, “We took delivery of two new Hilux operational vehicles presented to the command last week. This is the first assignment of the vehicles and it turned out to be the best for the command. We are grateful to the chairman, and this is a clear warning that there is no room for drug barons in the state.

“The warehouses are located in the heart of the forest, yet we were able to uncover them based on intelligence gathering. The cannabis warehouses were located at Ukpuje Forest.

“The community is notorious for cannabis cultivation and trafficking as well as attacks on law enforcement officers, but stood still as a combined team of NDLEA and combatant military personnel overran the drug trafficking syndicates due to our superior fire power.”

Marwa identified the suspects as chairman of vigilantes in Ukpuje, Emmanuel Oki, 62; one Chief Odi Sabato, 42; Bright Edegbe, 53; Gowon Ehimigbai, 53; Enodi Ode, 37; Ayo Oni, 30; and Akhime Benjamin, 43..

He added, “The operation lasted from Thursday night through Friday night February 5, 2021. The suspects will be investigated and charged.”

Tiger captured alive after Indonesia zoo escape

An escaped tiger that killed a keeper at a zoo on Borneo island has been captured alive after a day on the loose, police said.

The white Bengal tiger was found wandering in a jungle surrounding Sinka Zoo in the town of Singkawang, West Kalimantan on Saturday, following its escape through a hole.

Another tiger that broke free was shot dead earlier.

“We found and captured the second tiger by sedating it with a tranquillizer,” local police chief Prasetiyo Adhi Wibowo told journalists late Saturday.

The pair of 18-month-old female Bengal tigers — previously thought to be Sumatran — escaped from the zoo after days of torrential rain created a hole near their enclosure.

A 47-year-old male zookeeper and several animals were found dead near the tiger cage.

The escape triggered a frantic search involving police, military and conservation officials, while locals were told to stay at home and avoid tourist attractions near the zoo while authorities hunted the animals.

An orange-coloured Bengal tiger was shot dead after a failed attempt to neutralise it with a tranquillizer gun.

Conservationists said they were forced to shoot the endangered animal after it was no longer responding to its keeper and showed aggressive behaviour towards humans.

Indonesia’s zoos do not have a good reputation, and some have been reported for animal cruelty.

30-year old woman, her two daughters shot dead by ex-boyfriend

A St. Louis woman and her two daughters were fatally shot by her ex-boyfriend, who fled on a Greyhound bus and was captured 100 miles away, police said.

Ronald Marr, 34, was arrested in Effingham, Illinois, hours after the early Thursday triple slaying of the 30-year-old woman and her 7- and 1-year-old daughters in St. Louis, police said.

Cops responded to the woman’s St. Louis home and found all three dead from gunshot wounds. Police Chief John Hayden told reporters investigators found a “very gruesome scene” inside.

“There’s a lot of disturbing evidence  inside,” Hayden said. “It’s traumatizing to the officers that went in.”

The victims have not been identified by police, but relatives told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Marr was the former boyfriend of 30-year-old Kanisha Hemphill, who died in the attack. The woman’s daughters, 7-year-old Journee, and 1-year-old Ja’Kari, were also killed, relatives told the newspaper.

Court records cited by the outlet show that police said a witness heard the gunfire and spotted Marr running away. The witness later picked Hemphill’s ex out of a photo lineup, police said.

Marr allegedly tossed his cellphone following the triple slaying and bought another before getting onto a Greyhound bus and fleeing, police said.

A motive for the slayings was not yet provided by investigators.

Hemphill’s brother, Jermaine Walker, said his sister and Marr had ongoing domestic issues.

“I didn’t really care for him,” Walker told the Post-Dispatch. “They had a few instances and I always told my sister, leave the guy alone. But she ended up having a baby by him.”

Other relatives are in shock following the killings, Walker said.

“The death penalty would be too easy for him,” he continued. “He should have ate a bullet right after that.”

I never hid my pregnancy from prying eyes - Actress Etinosa

Controversial actress, Etinosa Idemudia who welcomed a baby girl with her husband in December 2020 has expressed her joy as a first-time mum. In an encounter with Inside Nollywood, the Edo State-born declared that indeed, motherhood is a great feeling.

“It is the highest sense of responsibility and selflessness having to put someone else first before yourself. I am still learning and discovering lessons as a new mum. At the hospital when the matron put my baby in my arms, I was thrilled! In fact, that was the happiest moment of my life. It was better than how I felt on my wedding day,” she gushed.

On why she hid her pregnancy from prying public eyes she says: “I did not hide my pregnancy. I was working till I was seven months pregnant.

I even hosted an awards show with my baby bump in full glare. It wasn’t my fault that nobody noticed. Besides, my family and friends were aware. It is my private life and I don’t need to announce it to fans. I don’t owe them such news.”

The Washerman actress, who’s fans have accused her of deliberately concealing her husband’s face with a smiley when she posted their baby’s naming ceremony photos online gives reasons for her actions: ‘’Nigerians jump into conclusions too fast and you all are so easy to sensationalize, to incite. Funny, at the end of the day, it was my event and my page I shared those photos. I will put emoji on any face I desire. In any case, I am the only one in my family who signed up for public life so, I keep the rest of my family private,” she concluded.

Social media dangerous to mental health – Susan Peters

There is no gainsaying the fact that social media now plays a big role in how people communicate and do certain things. Some people also believe that the number of followers a person has is a yardstick to measure the person’s popularity.

But, actress, Susan Peters, disagrees.

In an interview with Punch, she said, “I don’t think social media followership should be a yardstick for determining a popular person.

Many celebrities were already popular before Instagram came into existence. In some instances, there are people with so many followers but very few likes. Our profession is about make-believe. Not everyone lives the kind of lifestyle they portray on social media.

But then, we are in the social media era where people believe they need to post things online to amass a large followership.

“Social media is already dangerous to our mental health. Celebrities only post the good stuff about themselves. My advice to people is for them not to follow all they see on Instagram.

Celebrities can be positive influencers and fans can choose someone who does good deeds, to motivate and inspire them. Anyone can be a role model. Whether the person is big or small, it does not matter, as long as one impacts lives positively.”

Employee killed as 2 tigers escape from Indonesian zoo

Two tigers escaped from a zoo in Indonesia’s West Kalimantan province, with one of the animals killing an employee who tried to stop them, according to local media reports on Saturday.

The white tigers ran away from Zinka Zoo in Singkawang district on Friday after a rain-triggered landslide and subsequent flooding damaged their enclosure, according to zoo official Elka Surya.

“The landslide created a big hole in the tigers’ enclosure, allowing them to escape,’’ Elka said, according to the state Antara news agency.

An employee tried to stop the tigers but was attacked and killed, Elka said.

One of the tigers was shot and killed on Saturday morning, CNN Indonesia reported.

A team is searching for the other one, it added.

“We used a tranquillizer but it didn’t work. We shot it because we feared it was running to residential areas,’’ local conservation chief Sadtata Noor Adirahmanta told the broadcaster.

Herdsmen/farmer crisis: Soldiers storm Ogun villages again!

For the second time, soldiers from 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, Ogun State, have visited some villages in Yewa North Local Government Area, Ogun State, where they had earlier brutalised residents at the instance of some herdsmen.

In a report exclusively published by The Nation penultimate Saturday, the soldiers had reportedly escorted some herdsmen to some of the villages on December 19, 2020 and flogged many of the residents for refusing to allow the herdsmen to graze their cattle on their farmlands.

About 29 villages in the area had been attacked in recent times by terror herdsmen who were said to have camped at Eggua, a neighbouring town, from where they led their cattle to destroy farmlands within the Ketu-Yewa communities, which share borders with the Republic of Benin.

The affected villages include Ateru, Moro, Ologun, Agbon, Igbota, Ogunba-Aiyetoro, Oke-Odo, Ibore, Gbokoto, Iselu, Ijale, Ohunbe, Igbeme, Ijoun, Owode-Ketu, Igan-Alade, Lashilo, Oja Odan, Moro, Ologun, Iyana Meta, Igbooro, Egbeda and Kuse.

The story has not been refuted by the Nigerian Army or the federal authorities many days after it was published.

Worried by the development, some traditional rulers in the area had written a petition against the soldiers, the state government, and the police in the state.

In a bid to silence the victims of the brutality, about six soldiers led by one Captain John Onyebuchi, visited some of the villages in the Yewa North Local Government Area of the state again at about 2 pm on Friday, January 29, 2021.

At Ubeku, in the presence of the Baale (village head) Chief Olaleye Adigun, a youth leader Peter Koposhu and other villagers, the soldiers asked one of their victims, Seye Mulero to recant his statement published in the petition and reported by The Nation. According to a four-minute audio recording of the event that transpired during the visit and obtained by our correspondent, Captain Onyebuchi revealed that the Army headquarters was worried by the petition it received and news report over the allegation that men of 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta escorted herdsmen to the affected communities where they brutalised some villagers for refusing herdsmen to graze their cattle on their farmlands.

In the said audio recording, Onyebuchi was heard frantically asking Mulero to make a video recording of the retraction to save the Army from embarrassment. The victim, however, refused to retract his statement, insisting that he was flogged and badly wounded.

Disturbed by Mulero’s stance, Onyebuchi said: “The story says ‘Soldiers escort herdsmen to Ogun villages… At that point, the soldiers seized him and beat him mercilessly…’

“See, this is a big allegation and we will not take it for granted.

“The (Nigeria) Army got in touch with Alamala (35 Artillery Brigade), which in turn sent me here. I have to write a report on the investigation because I must report back to the person who sent me here.

“…I want you (youth leader) to video him (Seye) because your name is what we have in the petition. Your name is what we have, so you (youth leader) will record him now, he will call his name and say that nobody touched him.”

Onyebuchi then asked that Mulero be filmed while refuting the story that he was beaten by soldiers who escorted herders to the village.

“He will call his name as you are recording him and say that all these are false. Nobody touched him and whatever he said, nobody forced him to say; he said it out of his freewill in the presence of the Baale and the youth leader and, of course, members of the community.

“Are you getting me? Go ahead…if that is done, I think I am okay with it.”

The soldier however warned that the failure of the victim to make the retraction might force the Army to return to arrest him as well as shun any distress call from the community.

He said: “Let me tell you what this thing means. There’s a need to clear this air. If you don’t clear it, next time when they call, the Army will not respond because you people have alleged and penned the name of the Army in a bad light (sic) and the Army will not respond when there is an emergency in this place.

“If they don’t respond, you can’t blame them. So, the need to clear this is very important. If I were you, I would come out clear because your name is everywhere in the petition they wrote; that you were beaten mercilessly, and look at you here.

“Say it that whoever is doing it is doing it on his own; that you didn’t send anybody.

“If you like, pretend to feign lack of understanding by saying ‘mi o gbo, mio gbo (I don’t understand)’, that is your problem… If tomorrow they come here and pick you up that you were using the name of the Army anyhow, you will go in for it. So, the earlier you clear the air, the better for you.”

Mulero, however, refused to be intimidated, saying: “…I was flogged. You can see the wounds on my back and I am still feeling pains. The soldiers beat me up, kicked me, and dealt blows on me. Even parts of my body swelled up.”

Mulero’s younger brother, Gabriel, who was also flogged by the soldiers, said the second coming of the soldiers had heightened fears among the villagers.

He said: “The soldiers wore red berets, which suggested that they were military police. They left around 4 pm. They met with the Baale, the youth leader Peter Koposhu and other villagers.

“They came in a military van and left disappointed after my brother refused to do what they wanted of him.”
